Whilst a lot of the reviews on here are quite 'strong', this certainly isn't a great hostel. The backpacker areas seem quite nice but we booked a double room and ended up in a very small room in corridor that stank of cigarettes and cooking smells. The residents around us were long term and families/migrants. All very friendly but it...

We stayed at the lodge for one night. We were travelling by camper van so used this to sleep in but we were welcome to use all the facilities. There was a really big living area and kitchen and there were lots of bathrooms and showers on each floor. I liked my stay at Rowena's lodge.

I have stayed 2 nights at Rowena's! I was shocked when I arrived. The whole place stinks. Most of the single rooms are occupied by longterm residents/worker. They keep there working boots in the hallway and they smell very bad. Other than that the smoke smell was disgusting. Reception could not find my reservation, I rather would have left straight...

Don´t go in this hostel! I wouldn´t recommand it at all! I was there over New year, just because every other hostel was booked out. The good things first about this hostel: quite cheap (15$ per night to sleep in a van or in a tent), free off-road-parking... Bad things: unfriendly staff, thieves at work (everywhere), There were two things...

First I was worried before our arrival as I read reviews after we booked ;) but I was positively surprised! Yes, it is an old house, basic, but clean! Murray greeted us friendly and was very helpful! It is a good kiwi style stay, close to the city. If you are European or used to higher standards and not used to...

We paid $109 for a shoebox which slept three of us - a double and a single bed. This was last minute accommodation as WOW was on in Wellington and everywhere else was booked. For what we paid we were expecting a nicer than average backpackers but what we got was disgusting! (If accomm was not booked out we could...

This place has some of the most fascinating people that I've ever met. I honestly loved staying here. The kitchen is communal, and the TV room is always full of fellow travelers. I climbed out of my window and sat on the fire escape to see one of the best views of Wellington I've ever seen. The view from the...

We stayed at Rowenas at the start of February, for the rugby 7s weekend. We stayed in a campervan in the carpark and had a cheap rate accordingly (prices were fair) Half the rooms seemed to be permanently occupied by really dodgy people. All toilets and showers are unisex and we had toiletries stolen from the shower rooms and laundry...

I stayed at this place in a tent outback, it was priced as expensive as nice holiday parks but was not. very value for money. The place was not cleaned once on our three hour stay, filthy mostly. The shower rooms and toilets appeared to be never cleaned, and not stocked with toilet paper or soap, Four pans for about...

By far the worst experience we have had in NZ! We booked in and spoke with the slightly arrogant manager who snatched the money from my hands... were suprised to pay good money for a "campsite" and find out it was in a dodgey carpark with no security. The lodge was full of drunk what appeared to be homeless people...
