Wairakei Resort Taupo offers a restful atmosphere that some guests appreciate, yet many find the resort's value questionable, citing high costs for rooms that often appear outdated and do not meet expectations. While the cleanliness of the hotel receives commendations, particularly for the comfy beds, reviewers suggest there's room for improvement.

Detailed Reviews
We booked two rooms between Christmas and New Year to enjoy 3-4 days with our parents.
Unfortunately, the amenities advertised such as the Tennis Court were in a bad state. The astroturf on both courts is ripped at the serving line and a major risk to all players. But the resort still provides racquets and balls, and a disclaimer notice on the fence you play at your own risk. These courts could easily be glued and repaired and should be closed until such time as they are in a fit state.
We also had a dreadful and expensive ‘brown bag breakfast’ that cost $56 for two people. With the restaurant unable to offer the usual breakfast buffet, guests need to order breakfast to be delivered. The bacon and egg muffin was cold, squashed and inedible with the runny yoke having dripped all through the fresh fruit salad. We didn’t bother for any further breakfasts and ate outside the resort.
While we appreciate that this resort is older and the grounds are beautifully maintained - the location and setting isn’t enough for $330 per night with tired decor, dangerous activities and poorly executed breakfast options.
This resort does need investment to bring it back to its former four star glory or reduce its prices and advertising ambition back to an average accommodation and conference centre so expectations are met.

Dear rachaelp9, Thank you very much or staying with us and taking the time to publish your honest feedback. We have tried several options to glue and fix the tennis courts, but unfortunately the ground below the turf makes this very difficult. The courts are implemented into the refurbishment plan. I'm very sorry that the breakfast was a disappointment. We are aware it cannot be compared with the buffet but given the fact that we are catering for over 400 guest in the morning for breakfast we have little options available. However, your feedback has been shared with the Hotel Manager. We are currently at different options to provide breakfasts under the red light. Your comments on the maintenance and need of refurbishment have of course been taken on board as well. The refurbishment has been pushed back under current circumstances but we are still planning to go ahead. Thanks again for your feedback, we do hope that we can welcome you back sometime in the future. Sincerely, Felix witte Front Office Manager

Our family with teenagers stayed as a pre-Christmas treat.
Pros: service was top notch. The male waiters in the Geyser bar were fabulous and we felt so relaxed. I would return again simply to enjoy the service and atmosphere that the Geyser bar service team create.
Cons: facilities are outdated and showing signs of neglect. Breakfast delivered was in a cardboard box with disposable utensils. While this breakfast alternative was advertised as being Covid related, it felt more like a cost saving measure eg less food and less service staff required.
All in all Wairakei resort is still clinging on to life and there is hope. It just needs care.
I so wish the Loh family from oriental holdings, who own this establishment, would invest money into maintaining it. A few decades ago I am sure this would have rivalled many resorts, but now it seems to be slowly bleeding out a painful yet avoidable resort death. The garden paths, restaurant, lap pool, buildings, furniture etc… are all in desperate need of refurbishment. Such a shame and I left feeling a bit sad to see such a historical piece of Taupō being neglected.
But I am hopeful it will get the millions of dollars invested into it that it needs to bring it back to life. Once that happens, we’ll be back.

Dear Knowles K, Thank you so much for your honest review. We are delighted to read about your service experience and will certainly share it with the team. I understand your comments on the breakfast and we are glad that I can advise that we are able to service the buffet again since this mroning. Of course we also acknowledge your feedback in regard to the need of a refurbsihment. Everything has been pushed back this year but we are still working on the plans for the Resort-wide refurbishment. Sincerely, Felix Witte Front Office Manager

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
The room was a bit tired,.. shabby carpets, but had a nice outlook to a balcony overlooking green surroundings .
The beds were comfortable and we slept well except for the bass guitar of the band playing at the function that night and the noisy guests returning to their rooms after midnight.
The following night a large convoy of bikers arrived. . They made a lot of noise with their bikes parked right below our first floor window . I think they should have been made to park their bikes in the car park where everyone else parked their cars.
My husband I got stuck in the tiny antiquated old lift for several minutes and it was terrifying.
There was a persistent stale offensive smell on our floor.. I thought it might have been a dead mouse or similar.
I had fish and chips in the dining room first night.. it was trevalley apparently, but there was hardly any fish and way too much batter. The coleslaw was very bland .. as was the Kumara soup.
We were disappointed to find the golf course closed . That had not been made apparent when I made the booking a few weeks earlier.
The staff were extremely friendly.

We are currently staying at the resort, when booking we were booking we had the choice of 2 rooms (same price) one with bigger beds and one that said it had a private balcony and looked put onto a beautiful garden. We chose the one with a private balcony. Unfortunately the room we got actually looks nothing like the photos on the website. And it definitely does not have a private balcony. I complained the first day and was told all rooms were like that "not private", the next morning we went for a walk around the ground and found the beautiful photos that were advertised as the huka twin with beautiful garden Outlook AND PRIVATE balcony. I went back to reception and was told the photos of the huka twin on the website were of the more expensive rooms! We are a young family that have been planning our weekend away for months and actually feel quite ripped off, false advertising on the rooms & also terrible customer service. Hotel is also very run down.
Pools were amazing, breakfast could have more options.

I’ll come straight to the point, this hotel should be closed down with immediate effect. Having enjoyed many times there between 2010 and 2020 we retuned for the first time in four years . The experience can only be described as horrendous. Having booked a special offer as a member we were horrified when we opened the door. My booking was for a room in a four star hotel not a inhabitel room that was old ,tired, falling to bits, stained old carpet, dirty walls etc etc etc. Having complained to the operations manager who didn’t see anything wrong with the room he offered to change the rooms for a fee to which I refused. Eventually they waved the charge and moved us to an upgraded room. If that’s an upgrade then don’t bother.
The entire place should be closed , with the intentions of spending millions to bring it back to what it once was.
Please people don’t book this place until it changes, the current owners managers are not bothered you would get better accommodation at a local hostel.

Our experience at the hotel this week was terrible 😣 The receptionist was not pleasant at all. She made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. We were put in a back block room no sun, no opening windows and no air conditioning. We asked if we could change rooms and were told it would cost us another $35!!!
Shower over a bath not the easiest when you are in your 70’s.
The fan in the bathroom was very noisy.
Only one chair to sit on in the room.
The meal in the restaurant was extremely expensive and very disappointing for what you got, the wine prices were excessive and the buffet breakfast was terrible, the food was all substandard, the bacon you could not even eat!! the scrambled eggs were pale and watery, the sausages were white like they had been microwaved.
Very disappointed and would not recommend to anyone!!!!!

Taupo Wairakei Resort
Stay 18-20/8/2023
Our room gave a very disappointing experience. Our linen had no extra winter blanked, just the summer linen. It’s not ok to service room after 3 days. No Aircon or Heat pump, only ordinary wall mounted electric heater, what we had to run day and night as the room was very cold and had no insulation. Building too old. A “Kitchen” facility was not existing. No sink, no stove, no spoon, no knife. Just no cutlery at all. Only a tea box and 4 glasses. To fill the Kettle, we had to use the Bathroom water tap, what was a problem as the Kettle hardly fit under the Bathroom tap. The tap was very dirty and full with color and scratch marks. Should be replaced. Shower and water mixer very antic. Living room: Wall paper around door and Window frames comes off. TV rack had some broken off edges. Changing room beside Fitness room not usable, as it had only open or broken off Locker doors. Desk person said: We don’t have any key. Ok, but why is it not already fixed or replaced? We forgot by accident a bathroom bag behind the Door. It took the Resort 2 Days to pic it up? Really? Looking other reviews shows that obviously none of the complained issues had been fixed? The Resort is NOT recommendable. Given 3 out of 10 points. Gunter 18-20/8/2023

If you have no place else available to stay in Taupo then still find somewhere else. I felt sorry for the receptionist on duty who must have despaired when I went to the front desk three times, but really? This accommodation is rated as a four star "resort", but sadly it is extremely overpriced for its lack of functioning commodities and its unkempt facilities. Tables were not clean on arrival, cigarette butts were just outside the patio door, locks to the patio were broken, light bulbs were missing, there was no bedside light for one person, there was mould in the bathroom and in one fridge - that took three requests to have it cleaned, the air conditioning was substandard, there was no linen service for one of our rooms for the four days we were there, and there was no linen to clean or dry any plates. There was no hot water on our last day, the tennis courts and golf course were unavailable, and the breakfast was one of the most ordinary one would find anywhere! Most of it was barely warm, the "gormet" spaghetti looked liked good old "Watties" tinned spaghetti and the crispy bacon was not! One of my party lost a nightshirt, which we believe was caught up in the sheets for cleaning, and sadly no apology was given, nor an offer to find it, and certainly no offer of recompense. Housekeeping staff were not always polite, and the fire alarm debacle at 3.00am one morning, was yet another sign of the dysfunction of the property. In these days disposable income is limited and when choices have to be carefully considered, this was certainly not value for money, thus I repeat - choose this only as a last resort!

Recently we had booked to stay at 'Wairakei Resort' for 3 nights with our 3 older children. Due to change in circumstances, our sitter had fallen through with our 8 month old twins which resorted in us having to bring them along. The resort was notified straight away (spoken with Joy) as we were happy to pay an extra fee if needed but we were told that was absolutely fine. We were travelling from out of town so arrived after check in time (3pm) and were greeted by Francis, whom was very accommodating.
From then on it went downhill....We arrived in our "Family Villa" Room 338 to be exact to find out we were staying in what felt like "Emergency Housing". The room itself was very neglected and run down. The room had a very bad odor lingering, the microwave had a strong curry odor in and was not clean inside at all, and the carpet not only had burn marks/large stains but also smooth edge around the perimeter exposing nails creating a health and safety concern.
We then made our way back to reception to express our concerns with whom I believe was the manager on at the time (Joy) who was the opposite of accommodating but was very dismissive and rude. We were told there was another family villa available but wouldn't be ready for 2 hours. (5.30pm) After inspection (Room 340), the room itself was very similar to room 338. From then we decided to look for other accommodation in Taupo due to feeling like we were no longer welcome after raising our concerns. Discussing this with Joy, she became very rude implying that 'she let our twins stay for free' and that there was nothing she could do.
With it being holidays we were very limited to what was available so had no choice but to pay exorbitant rates. Sadly we are just one of many whom have experienced this, (over a year later) there is yet to have any maintenance done. We will no longer be visiting nor recommending this 'Motel' to anyone.

This place is a run down disgrace.
There is mold in the bathroom and the fans are covered in dust. Carpet is also so worn down to the ground i think weeds might start growing.
The rooms are also not sound proof and we are able to hear complete conversations from the next room.
There is also no daily room service, evident they are cheaping out where they can.
If you are considering choosing this place for the facilities, think again.
There is a sauna which doesnt warm up in the stated time and the pools are run down.
Especially when it comes to the gym, you will hurt yourself. When i was on the equipment it broke, i was seriously close to landing my back on some other equipment. The clamps also used to hold weights on bars do not work. Seriously shut it down until its up to code or someone will get hurt bad. And how hard is it to fill the water tank in the gym.
