Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We stayed two nights as part of a family group, taking a suite and a double room.

It was close to the main area, so convenient and easy to find with plenty of onsite parking. The family unit was spacious, included a living room, a good sized kitchen including an oven, and three bedrooms. It easily accommodated four adults and two children. The double room was also spacious, with a small kitchenette, a sofa and a large double bed plus a spa bath. All the accommodation was exceptionally clean and well maintained, and the front desk staff were friendly and helpful. I would happily stay again, and would recommend to families.

This is the most fantastically friendly and comfortable accommodation we have experienced in a long time.
The room was spotless and very comfortable, and the breakfast of eggs and toast was both appropriately priced and delivered on time, I couldn't ask better than that.
The site is located very near all the major routes in and out and many of the best attractions.
Alan and Shirley, our Hosts are wonderfully friendly and proactive, nothing was a problem to them.
We had a wonderful stay, and we HIGHLY recommend this facility.

I had the most enjoyable massage. Would definitely recommend and next time go for the mud wrap. The spa room was spotless and the masseuse very experienced. The background music was easy to relax to and the facilities are great to shower after a mud wrap. Would highly recommend.

TL;DR, incredible place to stay. Clean modern rooms, great pillows, Sky TV, and a massive assortment of DVD’s in the lobby. The host (I forget her name sorry) is amazing, super kind and accomodating.

We stayed here for a week, and were incredibly comfortable the entire time, it’s a 3 minuet drive from the city center, they have a spa and massage Business on site aswel as massive spa baths in the rooms.
They have a fully stocked kitchenette with a jug, toaster and a Nespresso coffee machine with free coffee pods aswell as a microwave.
You get a carton of milk instead of those lame 5ml containers.
A bonus was the guest laundry room where you only have to pay a few bucks to use the dryer, the washing machine was free.

If we’re ever in Rotorua again we will legitimately not look anywhere else. Silver Fern has us locked in as guests if we’re ever in the area!
Thanks for the hospitality!

The location is good. Rooms looks good from a distance. Look closer... Bathrooms are a 2-3 out of 5. Carpet is dark but was dirty when I got in here. When I put my feet on the bed there's stuff that stuck to my feet so I will not go barefoot in here. There was a dark hair on top of the bed. There's no safe in the rooms. They brag about the
'private pool' in the rooms but it's just an older Jacuzzi bathtub. Looking at the yellowed jets, there's no way I would go in it. The welcome gift when we came was an 8 ounce carton of milk and two individual packages of cookies.

Look at the photos. The light has bugs in it and is burned out. Look at the two towels/clothes racks. Yuck! The Jacuzzi faucet? No!

The walls are really paper thin! I could hear conversations. I needed to rest and there were kids jumping on the beds/ laughing loudly after 10. All afternoon & on both sides of me there were a number of younger adults outside and inside drinking beer and quite loud. When I got back at 9 o'clock, The office was closed and dark and nobody that I could contact about the noise. I was not happy.

Very noisy in the bathroom. There's a buzzing and humming noise that goes on and off every couple minutes. Most of the equipment noises are coming through the bathroom window from different machines on the back of the buildings.

l also wasn't told this room was on a second story. had to walk upstairs with a bad leg and naturally no other rooms were available on the first floor.

There is no solid "door" to the room. The outside wall is glass windows and a glass sliding door that you get a key to. The sheers are as thin as a pair of nylons. You can see right through them. There's almost no way you can completely close the curtains over the door when you leave, without them being open a little where people can look in.

This is certainly not what I would expect from a hotel room when I'm paying this
High a price!

Room Tip: This whole area smells strongly of sulfur from the geysers

Dear Nancy B, Thank you for your review. Please accept our apologies for not meeting meeting your expectations on this occasion. We are investigating the unusual noises and other issues you have highlighted but these appear to be somewhat an isolated case. We pride ourselves on extremely high levels of cleanliness. Please understand that while being located in a geothermal wonderland is special and wonderful - the famous geysers spilling Sulphur into the atmosphere causes a uniquely corrosive environment for metals. We do change all things metal and electronic basically every two years but it is normal in Rotorua for some metals may appear slightly corrosive at times. We nevertheless take your feedback in the constructive sprit intended and will redouble our efforts to ensure the expectations of our guests are met. Thank you for choosing Silver Fern Rotorua during your recent visit to Rotorua. Best best regards Silver Fern Rotorua

My partner surprised me to a one night stay here. We parked up with free parking and were warmly greeted at the reception, she gave us a map of everything we should do in Rotorua which was super informative. We got taken to our room and there behold was balloons from the ceiling, flowers, a small gift and a cheese platter for my birthday that they organised with my partner. We got offered a bottle of red wine to accompany the platter. I was absolutely blown away and to top it off we had a spa tub in the room to relax in! Absolutely loved this place and I wish we had longer than 1 night! Thanks so much and we will be back!

We stayed here for 2 nights. Check in/out was super easy and everyone was really friendly!! We had a massage as well which was incredible (really recommend this to add to your holiday!).

The only reason I’m giving it a 4 and not a 5 is because the room was SUPER hot. It was hotter in our room than outside (and outside was about 28 degrees Celsius). There is only a small fan to use which barely made a difference. Unfortunately this also meant we couldn’t take advantage of the beautiful spa bath because it was just too hot everywhere. We had the door and windows open most of the time as well, which unfortunately meant we also got bitten quite a bit by some mosquitos.

Based on other reviews, it seems that some rooms may have aircon so when you book, make sure you check!!

I would stay again if I had a room with aircon, or if it wasn’t the peak of summer. Everything else was really lovely! We just didn’t feel we were able to get our moneys worth because of the heat inside the room.

The last 2 nights of our week long trip were spent in rotorua ao we decided to spend a bit more and get a nice room - the honeymoon suite at Silver Fern, and we couldn't have been happier. The room and bathroom were luxurious with an amazing bed and a spa pool right next to the bed with a good view of the tv. The owners were very friendly and helpful with our plans while we were in Rotorua and there was even a day spa on site that we took advantage of and really enjoyed. My partner is already demanding we return soon....

Was able to pre-book by phone (and only 1 hour beforehand). Bit pricey ($95/ 60 mins) & only have capacity for 2 at a time: pro of quiet/ private massages, con of multiple trips for groups. Well worth the price if affordable: thoroughly enjoyed by all 4 people in my group! The 2 ladies were very friendly and checked comfort and pressure during the massage.

Answer from ticklesss
Auckland, New Zealand31 contributions6 helpful votes
We have stayed here twice and the first time it was September so still very cold and the fumes were strong. 2nd time we stayed was an October and no smells at all. I think it depends on the wind direction to be honest. Also the rooms close up very well so no air gets in.
