Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great location is the best thing going for it - right in the foodie district and walking distance from the edge of the free tram zone. HOWEVER - very shabby decor, lift that feels as if it could trap you in it, duct tape over frayed carpet, second room so small you had to move the bed to open the door. Lumpy pillows. There were dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Checkout was an issue - we had asked for late checkout and the message didn't get through, wanted to charge us $AUS150 to store our bags for two hours, and only till 1pm as they close early on Sunday. So we had to drag our luggage all over Melbourne to which the receptionist's only answer was "everyone does that in Melbourne". Staff were pleasant, just not obliging on that issue.

We stayed in a very sound studio apartment. Couldn't fault it, for the price. As it was quite basic, I couldn't really give it more than three stars. But it was clean, tidy, and everything worked, including the Wifi. We arrived after hours and left before the office opened, so we didn't meet any staff, but the check-in code worked perfectly and we didn't need any help. The bed was fairly comfortable, and it was nice to have a small balcony. It's a good alternative to nearby hotels, especially since you can take in your own breakfast. Nice to have a (small) living area separate from the bedroom Good location.

Worst accommodation I’ve ever stayed in. Rooms were full of old, worn, tired furniture and the actual room was pitiful. Bathroom was tiny and the kitchenette smelt stale and mouldy. While they must have at least 30 rooms, they only had 5 car spots so you couldn’t park on the premises. They contacted us prior to arriving to find out our arrival eta and assured us they would be ready for us however when we arrived, we were advised that our room wouldn’t be ready for at least an hour … we were only staying there as we were attending a wedding just down the road so waiting an hour was unacceptable. Suffice is to say, we would never recommend this property to anyone.

Probably don’t stay here if you need an updated, effective, clean and well maintained place. It’s old. Dated. Tired. Broken too. Sweet staff and the bed at least comfortable. Also just off Lygon street so lots of places to eat very close. But staying here means coping with safes that don’t work (they all don’t work said the maintenance guy), intermittent Wi-Fi (yes it’s always a problem said a staff member), threadbare carpets, cobwebs and a room that is just quite ugly and basic. And pieces of rolled up paper keeping the ceiling trapdoor shut. See pics.

Skip this place. We arrived late and our key card didn't work, worse, someone was already in the apartment. We had to call the night manager at 9.30pm to come down and do something. They recoded our room keys and we finally got in at 10pm exhausted. The room was grotty and old. the bedroom doors don' t close as the beds are too big for the room. Can't even put a suitcase down on the floor. Beds are old and pillows lumpy and old. There was 2 inches of dust and grime behind the doors and around the floors. Not even enough room in the kitchen cupboards to put a a plate in properly, they were propped up sideways. Very noisy, and you can here everything from next door to someone talking down in next doors car park.

Myself and partner stayed here for 6 nights in June for a winter city holiday. The appartment was airy and spacious and very well situated by the Lygon Street restaurants and within walking distance to the CBD. It's always good to have a kitchenette in the appartment. The staff were friendly but I suspect it was shortstaffed like everywhere at the moment, as the reception desk was usually closed. We suspected Lygon St would be loud, but the window in the main living room did not shut, so we got more noise than we normally would have.

I have stayed all around the world in a variety of accommodation styles however, nothing is as filthy as these apartments. The floors were grotty, like a nightclub carpet. The bathroom I think has never been cleaned. There was hair everywhere, not to mention dust. The toilet had urine everywhere and the toilet bowl was cracked. The vanity had sticky stuff all around it too. The windows were grubby and the drapes in the bedroom were so crinkled they looked like they’d been rolled up in a ball. The bedside tables were covered in thick dust and the air conditioner would not cool the room down. I would not recommend these apartments to anyone.

From the minute of arrival the staff member was uninterested & rude, yelling at other guests. On arriving to the room the swipe access didn't work & the door couldn't be lock. On entering the room the smell was unbearable, a mixture of mold & rotting. The carpet was all torn & tattered. The bathroom had hair still on the shower wall & in the kitchen the dishwasher was full of mold. Beside the dishwasher on the floor was particles of food & what appeared to be mouse or rat droppings. A refund was refused, along with the $60 extra I had to pay for parking. Very disappointing all round.

Carlton Apartments on Lygon apartments are in a marvelous location, just off Lygon St, Melbourne's Little Italy, with lots of restaurants and coffee shops close by. It's close to the Victoria Markets and if you take the tram, you can be in the City in 10 minutes. The apartments are roomy and the beds are a good size. Apartment owners say dealing with the management can be inconvenient; the housekeeping can be a bit sloppy at times. However, Carlton Apartments on Lygon seem to keep most guests happy, most of the time.

I have stayed in these apartments often since 2017, when it was a Quest Apartment. Due to Covid, I had not visited since early 2020. Since my last visit, the management of the building has changed from Quest to Central Apartments and the level of service is much inferior to what I was used to receiving. The door to my apartment was ajar when I arrived as it doesn't latch when closing. The cleaners left the door ajar, twice. I was concerned that the apartment would be open when I came back every evening. I asked for it to be fixed, a simple adjustment on the door closer, but it wasn't done during the two weeks I stayed. I actually had to ask for the room to be serviced, as it was not cleaned for three days, despite advertising daily servicing. I had run out of tissues and toilet paper! Even then the room was not serviced to the level I would expect. The dishwasher powder was not replaced despite leaving the empty packet on the bench to remind the cleaner, nor the dish cloths, the garbage bin was not emptied one day and there was a wet towel left on the bathroom floor. (Not where I left is hanging to dry) There are plenty of plates and cups, utensils etc for cooking in the room, but the ventilation is poor. With the noisy rangehood going at high speed and the balcony door open, you still get a lot of cooking smoke in the room. I am surprised that the smoke detector didn't go off! The lift is very noisy and jerky. Sometimes it displayed "out of service" message when you press the floor button. I was never confident that it would work, though I did always get to my floor, without being trapped. The bed was comfortable, the apartment is roomy, the wifi was OK and the location is hard to beat. Despite several restaurants closing, I guess due to lockdowns and COVID, Lygon Street still offers many choices. However, I was disappointed that it isn't the place I was used to, so next time I'm in Melbourne, I think I'll stay elsewhere.
