Detailed Reviews
Very handy location. We had some issues with late check in but had staff turn up on site and help us and arrange parking after hours. Room was very noisy with night crowds and early morning rubbish truck right outside the window but it was clean and spacious and was close by to things we needed for our stay.

Carlton Apartments on Lygon apartments are in a marvelous location, just off Lygon St, Melbourne's Little Italy, with lots of restaurants and coffee shops close by. It's close to the Victoria Markets and if you take the tram, you can be in the City in 10 minutes. The apartments are roomy and the beds are a good size. Apartment owners say dealing with the management can be inconvenient; the housekeeping can be a bit sloppy at times. However, Carlton Apartments on Lygon seem to keep most guests happy, most of the time.

The hotel put us close to the city but just off Lygon Street so more of a village atmosphere than intense CBD. We were close to transport, supermarket, restaurants and attractions. The bed was comfortable and the room quiet. The staff were friendly and helpful and the apartment was spacious and well equipped enough to meet our needs. Reasonable value for money. Housekeeping was a bit inconsistent during our stay but staff were very helpful if we asked for anything.

We had read some poor reviews of this place and so are happy to report that our accommodation greatly exceeded our expectations. We were greeted in a friendly and efficient manner and given keys (cards) to unit 201. We were pleased that everything worked well during our stay: the lift, everything in the kitchen and bathroom, the TV, lights, windows and doors, curtains and blinds. We didn't need the air conditioner, washer or dryer, but it was good that they were there. There was also a clothes stand, iron and ironing board. The beds were very comfortable and there was a selection of different pillows. We had an interesting outlook from every room and the small balcony, including old brick walls, city skyscrapers, the moon and stars, as well as some hot air balloons on 2 mornings. The apartment was not 5-star luxury and the carpet was worn and uneven in patches, but we lacked nothing and it suited us very well in both the unit itself and the location.

Great location is the best thing going for it - right in the foodie district and walking distance from the edge of the free tram zone. HOWEVER - very shabby decor, lift that feels as if it could trap you in it, duct tape over frayed carpet, second room so small you had to move the bed to open the door. Lumpy pillows. There were dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Checkout was an issue - we had asked for late checkout and the message didn't get through, wanted to charge us $AUS150 to store our bags for two hours, and only till 1pm as they close early on Sunday. So we had to drag our luggage all over Melbourne to which the receptionist's only answer was "everyone does that in Melbourne". Staff were pleasant, just not obliging on that issue.

Worst accommodation I’ve ever stayed in. Rooms were full of old, worn, tired furniture and the actual room was pitiful. Bathroom was tiny and the kitchenette smelt stale and mouldy. While they must have at least 30 rooms, they only had 5 car spots so you couldn’t park on the premises. They contacted us prior to arriving to find out our arrival eta and assured us they would be ready for us however when we arrived, we were advised that our room wouldn’t be ready for at least an hour … we were only staying there as we were attending a wedding just down the road so waiting an hour was unacceptable. Suffice is to say, we would never recommend this property to anyone.

These apartments let down their great location and structural potential by poor room design and maintenance. The “refurbishment” appears to have been an el cheapo job. We stayed in a two bedroom apartment that could not be used in that format as all doors had to be open to compensate for the total lack of room ventilation. The clothes dryer was unvented, forcing a choice between cleanliness and comfort. Both room windows had broken winding mechanisms, with one window having to be forcibly and permanently closed from the balcony to make the room secure (with obvious worsening of the inadequate ventilation). The air conditioner was ancient and very loud and struggled to cope with keeping the room under 30 degrees with only high 20s exterior temps. With all these problems, multiple sleepless nights ensued. The bathroom had had a cheap epoxy paint tile makeover which is now flaking and dirty looking. The fridge had not been defrosted in years, to the extent that the fridge light was encased in ice and blown. All requests for essential maintenance were noted for us daily, but not acted upon. Towels provided repeatedly didn’t match our room tenancy. Room staff seemed new and struggling with such basics. As others have noted the lift is regularly out of order (twice in our stay). The external garage security access was out of order our entire stay, which when combined with the emergency intercom not being connected to the out of hours number, turned a simple late night car entry into a quarter hour expedition (it’s a half block walk from garage to front door). Overall, we’d love to stay in this location again, after a full redesign and renovation to modern standards.

I have stayed in these apartments often since 2017, when it was a Quest Apartment. Due to Covid, I had not visited since early 2020.
Since my last visit, the management of the building has changed from Quest to Central Apartments and the level of service is much inferior to what I was used to receiving.
The door to my apartment was ajar when I arrived as it doesn't latch when closing. The cleaners left the door ajar, twice. I was concerned that the apartment would be open when I came back every evening. I asked for it to be fixed, a simple adjustment on the door closer, but it wasn't done during the two weeks I stayed.
I actually had to ask for the room to be serviced, as it was not cleaned for three days, despite advertising daily servicing. I had run out of tissues and toilet paper! Even then the room was not serviced to the level I would expect. The dishwasher powder was not replaced despite leaving the empty packet on the bench to remind the cleaner, nor the dish cloths, the garbage bin was not emptied one day and there was a wet towel left on the bathroom floor. (Not where I left is hanging to dry)
There are plenty of plates and cups, utensils etc for cooking in the room, but the ventilation is poor. With the noisy rangehood going at high speed and the balcony door open, you still get a lot of cooking smoke in the room. I am surprised that the smoke detector didn't go off!
The lift is very noisy and jerky. Sometimes it displayed "out of service" message when you press the floor button. I was never confident that it would work, though I did always get to my floor, without being trapped.
The bed was comfortable, the apartment is roomy, the wifi was OK and the location is hard to beat. Despite several restaurants closing, I guess due to lockdowns and COVID, Lygon Street still offers many choices.
However, I was disappointed that it isn't the place I was used to, so next time I'm in Melbourne, I think I'll stay elsewhere.

+1

From the minute of arrival the staff member was uninterested & rude, yelling at other guests. On arriving to the room the swipe access didn't work & the door couldn't be lock. On entering the room the smell was unbearable, a mixture of mold & rotting. The carpet was all torn & tattered. The bathroom had hair still on the shower wall & in the kitchen the dishwasher was full of mold. Beside the dishwasher on the floor was particles of food & what appeared to be mouse or rat droppings. A refund was refused, along with the $60 extra I had to pay for parking. Very disappointing all round.

The quest is a great location in easy walking distance to restaurants and hospital but our particular unit was extremely poorly maintained. Toilet roll holder was broken so roll was just left sitting on basin. Shower was broken but no plug was supplied to use the bath. Washing machine had been removed. Pillows were terrible. So old and thin it was hard to sleep even when they were doubled over. I wouldn’t stay again.

Hi Dani. I have a Pajero, and asked the same question. They said it would not fit in their car park bu they kindly found me a staff parking space - warning, this was still very tight and I had to back out of a tunnel onto a road after having other staff move their cars for me, but at least we could park overnight and it was a very secure spot! Hope that helps.
We prebooked a car park which is underneath and secure. That area is not so easy to find street parking.
I think you do pay I believe its the gym about ten minutes walk from the hotel. One point though if you like running there are great parks around the hotel
Dear Andrew,
Please accept my apologies for the delay in response, we have car parking onsite which is undercover and secure. This is available at an additional cost per night and must be reserved in advance.
We hope to welcome you to Quest Carlton on Finlay in the near future.
Kind Regards,
Quest Carlton on Finlay
