Detailed Reviews
Caught up with family and friends so there was 10 of us for drinks and then dinner on a Thursday night - we had booked as it can get very busy later in the week and on weekends.
Everyone was really happy with their meals - tasty , tender and good size serves.
The hotel itself is spacious and has been well restored and is handy to Glenferrie Road , trams and the train station.

The atmosphere is spacious with a traditional pub decor. The meals are of a decent size and well presented. We decided to share all three main courses which were delicious. We ordered a wonderful Penne Ragu which had lots of meat. The risotto was very well cooked and the chicken Caesar salad was excellent although I would’ve loved the chicken to be in smaller slices and a bit more anchovy in the mix. I can never get enough lettuce. The service is great, we really enjoyed the atmosphere and there was plenty of wines on the wine list. It was a Friday night and we had no problems getting a park outside.

Good family room with 2 good sized beds. Large bathroom. Kept clean but benefited from a daily airing. Quiet enough, only annoying noise was the family with small jumping children at midnight on our last night - the bar did not disrupt sleep. Convenient for cafes, bakers, food outlets and Coles supermarket. Close to trams and train so easy to travel into centre. Friendly and helpful staff. We ate once in the bar - good pub food.

It is 3 star hotel (as classified on booking.com) but it charges 4 star prices.
The official hotel website advertises "no prepayment needed" as does booking.com and the fine print says if there is no credit card provided a $250 deposit is required. Which is fine.
However, when you arrive at the hotel you are advised you have to pay for your hotel room in full upfront. And the rate is often $226 a night (it can go down to $188, which is still overpriced for what you get) which means that for a four night stay you have to pay almost $1,000 upfront. We were advised they charged the full amount on arrival as reception is open irregular hours so it is more convenient for the hotel to do it this way. Also, it means you cannot change hotels if you are unhappy. My payday was the night before I left so my spending money for the trip was spent on my hotel room.
We chose this because we were at a conference at Swinburne Institute of Technology and it was walking distance. But we quickly found out that no-one else we knew from the conference was staying there, citing that it was too expensive. And it was a long way from the city if you want to do any sightseeing.
It is a very basic and very clean hotel room in a pub. I liked the room but it was very plain and had not been done up, though the carpet was fairly new. The free Wifi kept on dipping in and out so I used my own portable WIFI. No gym, no breakfast provided, no microwave. Just a jug and toaster. No mini bar, nice teas and instant coffee. Just small cups, no bowls, (so can't have breakfast cereal), and no tea towel so you can easily re-use cups.
If it was $130 a night, I'd be very happy. It is worth that, maximum $140. There were much better places around that were much cheaper. Others in our party airbnb'd as it was much cheaper.
On the bright side, the staff were very good and pleasant, sheets were crisp.

Luncheon with friends was absolutely delicious today and service exemplary. We have booked accommodation overnight in King Spa room and impressed with its neatness, cleanliness & size of room. And the bed is so comfortable. We are eating dinner here instead of going out because the hotel is fabulous, food great and delightful charming ambience!!! Perfect all round Trish.

Good location and free parking with generous sized room. It was clean but not meticulous. Felt like nobody had stayed in the room for a while. There was dust all over the bed head and the side table phone. The room was very dated and in need of a facelift. The bathroom curtain had holes in it and one side of the mattress had a dip in it. The hair dryers off switch didn’t work. There is no elevator so going up and down the staircase with luggage is difficult.

The rooms are reasonable. The real issue is over the period of two different stays. On each occasion noise, from music playing was so loud I couldn't get any rest. Yes the music continued in each case until after midnight. Then plenty of loud banging into the morning.

Went for lunch today, 5th April 2014 very disappointed, staff were good but the food was second rate. Had Veal schnitzel tasted like leather no bigger than the palm of my hand with burnt crust, poorly presented, the other 3 meals were all bad, NEED A NEW COOK or maybe a Chef. Want be going back and will not recommend.

I travel a lot for work and get sick of the big slick hotels, so thought I'd give the Glenferrie a try (i normally stay 4 - 4.5 star). If you are after immaculate, sterile hotel rooms this won't be for you, but if you enjoy some character, read on. This is an old Hotel that has been restored. No lifts so if you get a 2nd floor room you will need to lug your luggage up the stairs. But rooms are very big, clean and functional. Parking is easy and provides quick access to rooms. Staff are very friendly and food is fabulous. I had dinner and breakfast and was impressed both times; definitely eat here. Locations provides quick access to Esatern suburbs without city traffic hassles. I'll stay again.

I would not stay at hotels that allow pets with other guests. unless it was a service dog I would most definately complain
