Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Friendly, helpful staff and a comfortable queen studio room with excellent amenities in a very convenient location. The all day availability of complimentary coffee, tea, apples and sweets is a lovely bonus, as is the mid week "happy hour". This small hotel manages to create

Great place to stay for so many reasons - close to southern cross station, trams just outside, quiet, comfortable and great staff. Added bonus of coffee and tea in the reception cafe. Some might not like the lack of view from the window.

I just checked with their reception desk to make sure my memory was correct. Some of (not all) the larger apartments have their own washing machine and tumble dryer, plus there is a communal coin operated laundry within the hotel. Since reception is open 24/7 they will always give you some change for the machines. If you have booked a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment send them a note and ask to be allocated one of the rooms with a washing machine. I find them very cooperative and helpful if they know of your need. Regards John

Hello Cynthia There are quite a few good tours we suggest the following day tour companies. GoWest. Autopia or Melbournes Best Tours. If you search for them online you will get more details about the tours they offer for the Great Ocean Road. Regards, Gary

Dear Nicole, sorry for the late reply. We did have a smoking room many years ago on the ground floor however due to new local regulations we have had to re-purpose the space. Alto hotel is fully non smoking and smoking is not allowed on balconies. Smokers are welcome to use the adjacent laneway, an ashtray has been placed for their convenience.
