Rooms are comfortable except for the very deep and elevated tubs that would need caution for elderly or people with knee or leg problems, as they are a bit hard to get out of. Room ammenities include bathrobes, kitchenette facilities with a microwave, the gorgeous bathroom and lovely lighting.
Not a chain. It's more of a posh B&B with a very homey atmosphere.
The rooftop balcony is outstanding with gorgeous city views. Recommend sitting on top to watch the sunset and enjoy wine or one of the hotel's reasonably priced cheese and fruit plates or dips. This was an absolutely liberating and relaxing experience up on the roof that I will not soon forget.
The only negatives were the fact that not all rooms are created equal. The room in the photos I have taken was fine, but I saw one upstairs with a king bed that was breath taking. Also, didn’t like the TV preset volume as it was very low and the fact you do hear people stomping around at times, but not that often.
Breakfasts in the front lounge were a treat. A nice range of cereals, breads, fresh fruits and pastries. Of course being able to have special coffee and not just a filtered one was a great start to the day. Complimentary use of internet in the lounge was appreciated. We were able to keep in contact with our Veterinary practice in NZ who were looking after one of our sick cats.
Situated in the suburb of South Yarra proved to be quiet and restful area. We had lovely walks, looking at all the victorian houses and parks for an evening stroll. The tram stop right at the front door was convenient and we were able to buy daily passes at the front desk. There were several restaurants within walking distance - 5 minutes max. Our favourite was Botanical. The food and service were top notch.
There was a small shopping area beside these restaurants which had drycleaning service, pharmacy, fruit & vegetable shop. A short walk or tram ride out of town takes you to another shopping area on Toorak Road with more restaurants and convenience stores plus a Laundrette which we used a few times.
I wouldn't recommend the hotel to people who have difficulty climbing stairs as the hotel has 3 levels and no elevators.
All in all our stay at The Hatton was marvelous and we'll be back.
The Hatton is not a boutique hotel. OK, so let's get that straight. It is a gorgeous property in the best part of Melbourne with a lovely homey feel and ambience. BUT, boutique it is not. If you think of the Ypma 'Hip' Hotel series...the Hatton would not make it in any edition. BUDGET 'HIP' maybe, but that depends on your foreign currency and exchange rate to the Aussie dollar.
The Hatton is charming; and the service is limited. There is no 'front desk' per se...it is the bar/breakfast area for the hotel which closes at 11pm at night and when the person 'on duty' is away the door is locked. There is wireless internet; and a table with magazines but no area to just lounge.
The rooms are varied...nice wooden floors (if you stay below one be prepared for the noise effect); they have fireplaces (that don't work) and sash windows that rattle when the wind is full force. The bathrooms are very clean and simple (with L'Occitane amenities and fluffy white towels). The two rooms I stayed in were similar but slightly spartan and had an air of a 'converted' old apartment about them. The kitchen-ettes are 'motel' like and not geared up for anything more than tea/coffee and toast/cereal. Which, brings me to the breakfast. Great coffee, cereal and toast. But that is it. There is no hot food or snack option to speak of, and it is more like a wine bar at night.
All in all, a great little place with 'euro-charm' in South Yarra...if you want a B&B like feel for a weekend escape, or are staying in town on business and DON'T want a face-less 'corporate' experience - then consider the Hatton. I will return, but if you need service or amenities...stay at The Westin. If you want 'boutique'...stat at the the Prince of Wales in St. Kilda.
