We went to Melbourne for the 2006 Australian Open (tennis) and spent an excellent 5 days at The Hatton. The room we had was clean and well-lit. It had a large bathroom and also a private patio where we took our breakfast on some mornings. The location could not have been better for the Aussie Open, close enough to Melbourne Park that you could walk there in 20 minutes through the Botanical Garden nearby. If you want to play tennis on your trip, Fawkner Park Tennis Center is right around the corner. There is also a tram stop in front of the hotel to take you to other parts of the city. Staff was friendly and very helpful. We got a great rate on our room and with the free breakfast each morning (an excellent continental breakfast with made-to-order lattes and cappucinos!), this hotel is an excellent value for your money. If you like small boutique hotels, I highly recommend this one when visiting Melbourne.

The Hatton has a great location just outside the city center, in front of a tram stop, around 10 minutes to the busy city center. It’s near a good fruit shop, wine shop, a famous restaurant, Cabash, and several cafes. Not far from Toorak Rd. with many more options for dining.

Rooms are comfortable except for the very deep and elevated tubs that would need caution for elderly or people with knee or leg problems, as they are a bit hard to get out of. Room ammenities include bathrobes, kitchenette facilities with a microwave, the gorgeous bathroom and lovely lighting.

Not a chain. It's more of a posh B&B with a very homey atmosphere.

The rooftop balcony is outstanding with gorgeous city views. Recommend sitting on top to watch the sunset and enjoy wine or one of the hotel's reasonably priced cheese and fruit plates or dips. This was an absolutely liberating and relaxing experience up on the roof that I will not soon forget.

The only negatives were the fact that not all rooms are created equal. The room in the photos I have taken was fine, but I saw one upstairs with a king bed that was breath taking. Also, didn’t like the TV preset volume as it was very low and the fact you do hear people stomping around at times, but not that often.

The Hatton is hands-down the best hotel I have stayed in Melbourne, and I would say it would be in my top-ten favourite hotels in the world! I have stayed there 4 or 5 times and each time I was blown away by the reasonable rates, comfy rooms (minimalist chic), super-friendly staff and very relaxed atmosphere. I wish there was a Hatton in every city in the world! A downside for some maybe that the Hatton does not have a kitchen as such, so you have to make your own arrangements for lunch and dinner. But with so many fantastic eateries on your doorstep, this is hardly a hardship. Breakfast is provided, and very satisfactory it is. The coffee still lingers in my memory as outstanding. Do yourself a favour, check it out.

We chose the Hatton for our visit to the Commonwealth Games as a result of the excellent reviews on these pages. We were not disappointed. We stayed there on two separate occasions and the 'superior doubles' we had were extremely comfortable and quiet. The staff were very friendly and very efficient. The No 8 tram stops outside the hotel and this is the perfect way to get to the centre of the city. In addition there are at least two excellent restaurants within walking distance - 'France Soir' and the'Botanical'.

Definitely one of the best discoveries in Melbourne. Residing in an old building, the hotel has been renovated into a chic modern establishment. Walking along the corridor and you will see display of antique pieces and tasteful artwork illuminated by subtle spotlights. The standard room was of reasonable size and had a kitchenette. Importantly the room was clean and had most things you need for a 4-star hotel. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast at the front room (which is also the reception) is a must in the morning. Enjoy toast, fruits, coffee and newspaper while the gentle morning sun shines through the windows... The hotel is located in South Yarra. There is a tram stop right outside the hotel and a tram ride to the city will take 15 mins or to the shopping mecca of Chapel St, 10 minutes. Decent restaurants nearby too! The experience is one to remember for a long time.

We've recently returned from Melbourne and stayed at The Hatton for 8 days. The first 2 nights we had a superior room, which was lovely with a private courtyard. The next 6 nights we were in the suite, which had beautiful Chinese furnishings. The staff made the switch over a breeze and did the move for us. The suite has a lovely bathroom, separate shower and a deep bath to soak away a tired muscles after a days sightseeing. The beds were extremely comfortable. Both rooms had a kitchenette which only got used for making a pre-breakfast coffee.

Breakfasts in the front lounge were a treat. A nice range of cereals, breads, fresh fruits and pastries. Of course being able to have special coffee and not just a filtered one was a great start to the day. Complimentary use of internet in the lounge was appreciated. We were able to keep in contact with our Veterinary practice in NZ who were looking after one of our sick cats.

Situated in the suburb of South Yarra proved to be quiet and restful area. We had lovely walks, looking at all the victorian houses and parks for an evening stroll. The tram stop right at the front door was convenient and we were able to buy daily passes at the front desk. There were several restaurants within walking distance - 5 minutes max. Our favourite was Botanical. The food and service were top notch.

There was a small shopping area beside these restaurants which had drycleaning service, pharmacy, fruit & vegetable shop. A short walk or tram ride out of town takes you to another shopping area on Toorak Road with more restaurants and convenience stores plus a Laundrette which we used a few times.

I wouldn't recommend the hotel to people who have difficulty climbing stairs as the hotel has 3 levels and no elevators.

All in all our stay at The Hatton was marvelous and we'll be back.

The Hatton Hotel is located in the suburbs therefore you are away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Not to say that The Hatton is isolated and out of the way. The tram literally stops at the doorstep of the hotel and if you choose to ride a cab, you can be in the city in less than 10 mins. The hotel lacks certain amenities available in most 5 star hotels such as 24 hour room service and housekeeping. There are also no elevators. But whatever this charming hotel lacks, the superb service makes up for. When we stayed at The Hatton, there were 3 staff taking turns at the reception. There were all friendly and warm and more than willing to go the extra mile. They were knowledgable and helpful, always at the ready for tips on where to go, dine and shop. The hotel's lounge is a wonderful place to relax, have a snack, chat with the staff and surf the internet. In The Hatton, you felt like a welcome guest in a warm home than an anonymous stranger in a business hotel.

Wanted to let the TA community know that unfortunately this hotel is closing as of tomorrow - if you visit their site, hatton.com.au, you'll be directed to a hotel nearby. I feel very very sad as the Hatton was our home away from home in Melbourne and we loved everything about it. We'll miss the wonderful breakfasts on the balcony, evening drinks on the roof, and the spare elegance of the polished boards and simple old furniture. This place really worked, and I'm very sorry to see it go. Vale Hatton.

"a curate's egg" as they say...good in parts.

The Hatton is not a boutique hotel. OK, so let's get that straight. It is a gorgeous property in the best part of Melbourne with a lovely homey feel and ambience. BUT, boutique it is not. If you think of the Ypma 'Hip' Hotel series...the Hatton would not make it in any edition. BUDGET 'HIP' maybe, but that depends on your foreign currency and exchange rate to the Aussie dollar.

The Hatton is charming; and the service is limited. There is no 'front desk' per se...it is the bar/breakfast area for the hotel which closes at 11pm at night and when the person 'on duty' is away the door is locked. There is wireless internet; and a table with magazines but no area to just lounge.

The rooms are varied...nice wooden floors (if you stay below one be prepared for the noise effect); they have fireplaces (that don't work) and sash windows that rattle when the wind is full force. The bathrooms are very clean and simple (with L'Occitane amenities and fluffy white towels). The two rooms I stayed in were similar but slightly spartan and had an air of a 'converted' old apartment about them. The kitchen-ettes are 'motel' like and not geared up for anything more than tea/coffee and toast/cereal. Which, brings me to the breakfast. Great coffee, cereal and toast. But that is it. There is no hot food or snack option to speak of, and it is more like a wine bar at night.

All in all, a great little place with 'euro-charm' in South Yarra...if you want a B&B like feel for a weekend escape, or are staying in town on business and DON'T want a face-less 'corporate' experience - then consider the Hatton. I will return, but if you need service or amenities...stay at The Westin. If you want 'boutique'...stat at the the Prince of Wales in St. Kilda.

I stayed at the Hatton, South Yarra, with my husband and we were very impressed. It is only a little out of the city and we quickly realised the city centre was not the place to be in Melbourne anyway - the coolest places all seemed to be in the various neighbourhoods around the city. It is a lovely building with style inside and out. We had one of the cheapest rooms - forget exactly how much but somewhere in the £75 region and it didn't really impress but was nonetheless stylish and airey - wood and white with splashes of fab colours. The breakfast was tasty and the staff really friendly and full of tips on where to go for a drink or food.
