Detailed Reviews
Our host welcomed us on arrival and took us through the check in process, including Covid requirements, very quickly and efficiently. Our room was incredibly comfortable and the triple glazing on the windows stopped any noise from penetrating. With the full kitchen in the room you could easily make this a base if you were visiting Melbourne. It's in a good position and public transport is easily accessible. The bedroom was up a small flight of stairs and the bed was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom included the usual toiletries and included a bath with shower over the top.

Reception area is basic and reception staff polite. To then be directed by staff to a Goods Lift via a narrow maintenance passageway for your room level access set the scene for the stay experience, the non advertised building renovation was not appreciated.
Mould level in bathroom would suggest minimum cleaning undertaken.
The railyard view from room was unedifying. The site location and street dwellers observed while walking had me firmly gripping my wallet while walking around the area. A 3rd world vibe was my take away from the stay experience.
Minimum parking arrangements suggest travellers on foot preferred as guests.
Horse drawn vehicles of a bygone era arriving with passengers in the small courtyard entry are imaginable, not modern motorised vehicles, nah! Very basic parking arrangements.

We arrived late night on Jan 21st and were given a very small room on the 6th floor that didn't match our expectations at all.
The next morning we went and saw the people on reception and they were extremely helpful and understanding and set about finding us another room.
They told us that they would have another room available that afternoon for the rest of our stay which was more spacious and had a downstairs lounge with and upstairs bedroom and bathroom.
When we returned the room was ready and as we arrived our bags were being delivered to our room.
It was a lovely room, spacious and very comfortable.
We had another three couples joining us who were all booked at the same hotel and they assured us that they would also get good rooms such as the one we were in.
That is how it turned out and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The location is ideal for access to trams and trains and everything is within a 10 minute walk.
Would recommend the hotel and we will all be staying there again next year for the Australian Open.
Just make sure of your room type when booking

We experienced outstanding service, presentation, location and assistance when we stayed to attend a family wedding in Melbourne. Unable to fault any of the help we received while staying with you. Taxis were booked willingly, parking was facilitated easily. Location right by the railway line was not a problem as the passing traffic was not noticed in the room.

My wife and I stayed for 4 nights during the Australian Open. The location is excellent, the room size generous and the cost reasonable. We needed to shift from the first room because of poor maintenance and cleaning. The man-hole cover was hanging down, there was mould on the grouting in the shower, grouting was missing, the range hood wouldn't close, a wardrobe handle was missing and a number of surfaces were dirty, reflecting poor cleaning. We were offered another room that was marginally better. During this process the manager was courteous and obliging. During the stay the bed wasn't made on some occasions and appropriate toiletries not replaced. We are experienced travellers, having spent 70 nights away from home in the last 12 months, both internationally and in Aust. and based on our experience, this property is 3 star rather than the 4.5 star advertised. While we always stay in 4 or 4.5 star properties we haven't experienced such a poor standard of maintenance and cleanliness for quite some time.

We knew something was amiss when we pulled up to the hotel which was right next to the train station - something not even mentioned on their website. After check in, we found a room that was in such disrepair that the walls had holes in them and the fixtures were coming out of them. To our relief, the very stuffy and hot room on our arrival did finally cool off with decent A/C, and the bed was comfortable. We believe the room was clean but still kept our luggage off the floor. The front desk staff was attentive to our questions, but didn't really have any good options at the time. The breakfast was good.
I simply have a problem paying over $300 per night for a room with holes in the wall and fixtures falling off. Way overpriced for what we got at this hotel. Spend this amount of money elsewhere.

I am sorry that you did not have the "Grand" experience and that the room allocated was not out on maintenance. I also apologise for my team member who did not offer you a room move. Price: - If your stay was during a special event period, the prices would have been dearer, due to the demand for accommodation. When in Melbourne again, please feel free to contact me directly, as I would really like you to experience what the Grand is all about. Thanks for staying.

I am a happy repeat guest of the Grand Hotel, an amazing location accessible by train and close to many city attractions. It’s an impressive achievement to create a sense of warm and genuinely friendly welcome in a city hotel. Every member of staff I have encountered is friendly, obliging and professional. Thanks to Denis for the welcome card with an Oscar Wilde quote no less! As usual our room was spacious and comfortable with very good amenities. Denis personally invited our visiting grandchildren to use the hotel pool and thoughtful cleaning staff offered us additional towels. Denis is a charming host and The Grand Hotel experience reflects this warmth and charm.

We have stayed here before when it was another chain. The rooms are comfortable and very clean, there is a feeling of spaciousness in the corridors, meaning you could safely pass other people. The front service staff were friendly and helpful (unlike the last time we stayed here) It seems like there are improvements happening, main lifts were being refurbished, so has to use the service lift, but that was fine! I would happily stay here again. Close to southern Cross Station and you can get anywhere in the city by walking or jumping on a tram.

+1
This was my first stay at the Grand Hotel.
The location is excellent, very easy to navigate to, once leaving the freeway.
Parking is also convenient, and the cost for parking is appropriate.
The staff ate lovely. Very kind and helpful. I appreciate the attention to detail given to guests. The card and chocolates bestowed upon us, when we first checked into our room, was charming.
Fortuitous circumstance meant we were upgraded to room 540, which is spacious, has several large windows and a lovely, street view. The street noise is minimal, presumably because the room has double-glazed windows.
My partner and I utilised the pool, spa and sauna facilities. The facilities are quiet, clean and comfortable.
We felt very welcome whilst staying at Grand Hotel and I will definitely consider staying here for any future Melbourne trips.

The location was why we chose this hotel, but the service is why we will go back. Denis (the manager I think) was a fantastic host. Requests were met speedily and he genuinely seemed to care about our stay and whether things were up to standard.
We travelled as a couple with a toddler, and other than the fact that we had to be careful with the stairs, the room was perfect for a family.
We used the pool every day - I would recommend bringing goggles if you plan to swim underwater as it’s quite chlorinated, but our toddler LOVED the wading pool. The sauna was great too.
We will come back next time we are in Melbourne.

Yes you can do laps in the pool. There is also a spa pool and a sauna
The WiFi is $10 per 24 hours - now offering unlimited data.
WiFi is complimentary in the lobby, library & RAB Restaurant.
Some packages also include FREE WiFi.
The Grand Hotel Melbourne's indoor heated pool is open until 10.00pm. Opens from 6.00am.
Whichever you ask for I suggest you ask for a room that faces Spencer St and not the railway so that it will be quieter
Dear bearw0,
Both room types do have balconies, however these are limited. Should you choose to book this particular room type you would need to make a request for a balcony. Please note that whilst we will try and cater to your request it is not guaranteed.
