The Hotel Windsor is Australia’s most loved and recognised grand hotel. Built in 1883 during the Victorian era and pre-dating other notable hotels such as The Savoy, Waldorf Astoria, Ritz Paris and The Plaza Hotel, it set a benchmark for style, elegance, sophistication and charm which remains ever present today. The hotel is located in Melbourne’s most central and fashionable district. Its location is in close proximity to the corporate, financial and designer heart of Melbourne. Many of the city’s best theatres, landmark attractions and sporting venues are within a comfortable walking distance. The hotel is located 20km from Melbourne’s Domestic and International Airport, with a traveling time of between 20-45 minutes. Parliament train station and tram stops including the City Circle route are located at the hotel’s doorstep.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The staff were amazing, I don't think I've ever stayed in a hotel where I've felt so comfortable and taken care of. Nothing was to much trouble for them and I was even able to have an early check in. The building is magnificent and full of history absolutely charming. The location is really good. The room wasn't overly large but it was comfortable and very clean. It had everything you needed. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel, and I'm sure I'll be back.

We hadn't preloaded visa cards, so check in was awkward when asked to settle bill in advance and pay incidental charge in advance. Given no option to pay there and then and didn't feel trusted. Air conditioning units outside were quite loud during night Everything else was great

Response from Hotel Windsor, General Manager at The Hotel Windsor
Responded yesterday
Dear Mark, Thanks for the feedback and delighted that you enjoyed your stay. We shall check on the noise of your air conditioning unit. Understand the 'trust' issue. A $50 per night pre authorisation which means we ask your bank to hold those funds temporarily until departure is common practice with hotels globally but that doesn't mean it is right. The intent is to prevent the occasional guest with thoughts of charging meals etc to their room and then departing with no intention to pay. We never actually take any money. We simply ask the guest's bank to hold so we hope that this can be seen as fair and reasonable. We hear you. With thanks and very best wishes, David David G A Perry General Manager

Our sixth stay at our favourite hotel in Melbourne. We love the old world charm and elegance of the Windsor. Efficient and friendly staff who go out their way to ensure an enjoyable stay. Great location only a short walk or quick tram ride to eateries, pubs and theatres.

The experience was “ok”. However I confess I expected more. The Windsor Hotel is somewhat iconic to those of us born in Melbourne and I think you are trading on that perception. I looked at others in the city on line beforehand and found that TWH was quite cheap by comparison which was a factor in our choice. I guessed that was because you have no pool or gym as many others do. I am not sure what you charged us for breakfast on our first morning but we had one at least equal or better down the road the next day for less than half the price. I had the fear about everything that you were going to sting me exorbitantly for any little thing. The prices in the mini bar were breathtaking. Our room was designated “superior” but in fact I think that it is the lowest grading that you have. Is that deceptive marketing? As I said, I would rank our experience as “OK”.

Dear Philip, Sincere apologies for the disappointment caused. We have eight room and suite types of which three are rooms as opposed to suites. The smallest are our Traditional Rooms with Superior the next level up. Okay is clearly not good enough. I would request you look at our website and review our a la carte breakfast pricing. Our research shows it is similar to Melbourne's best cafes. If we have made an error and overcharged you please contact me directly. With very best wishes to you both, David David G A Perry General Manager

The Windsor is a grand old hotel and we wanted a stay to indulge ourselves. We found the staff service to be exceptional, but the building needs some work to bring it back to its forma status. Carpets in the Cricketers Bar were filthy and threadbare in some places, and the walls of the hotel on the fourth floor had severe scratches and knocks. Our King room while being very small was neat and tidy, but the pillows were hard and lumpy, and the bath needed some maintenance.

The hotel windsor was so unprofessional and dismissive on a booking issue. I had upgraded my room and ordered a cheese platter for me and my wife's anniversary. Not only did they not try to accommodate us, but they tried to upcharge for another room and serve us the old cheese platter from the previous day. The staff was very cold and uncaring that we had traveled to enjoy the hotel windsor for our anniversary. The hotel smelled of cigarette smoke and the lobby was old and dated but that was a high point compared to their terrible customer service.

Perfect location and a real historic gem in a modern city. Beds and pillows were very comfortable and the room very spacious. There was quite a of lot of noise (footsteps) from the people above that would have been a bit problematic if they had not settled at a reasonable hour- probably to be expected from an old building. Would stay again.

Large elegant hotel, large room, with two chairs, very wide bed and plenty of storage area. Check in was easy, 150AUD deposit on room, given back when checking out. Bathroom more than adequate, shower easy to use. Room 408 is on fourth floor, facing on to main road, so the is traffic noise. The corridors are elegant and adorned with paintings of which I would happily hang in my living room. We eat in the Cricketers Bar, food was good, with daily deals of 25AUD for a meal and glass of wine or half pint of beer, I would choose the wine. The hotel is ideally situated to walk in to the shopping area of Swanson , Elizabeth , Flinders and China town. This is our only trip to Australia, the Hotel Windsor made it a great start.

Such a treat to stay again at Hotel Windsor. The decor is beautiful and the hotel services excellent. My favourite place to stay in Melbourne. It is so convenient to the 96 tram which takes you to the central shopping district and to the Crown entertianment complex.

What an experience we had staying in this perfectly preserved heritage protected grand hotel. We stayed in one of the Victoria Suites ( 3 bedrooms and a large ensuite bathroom) for a girls weekend. We were a party of three but the suite had enough beds for five - King, single and twin beds. Staff are amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. We dined in their restaurant One Eleven for dinner and breakfast. I have Coeliac Disease and am always cautious when dining out and usually only order a salad to be safe. I didn't need to worry. All the staff there understood the cross contamination issues. A very special mention to our waitress Kiki. She was so lovely and very professional. The food was incredible too. We will certainly stay there again.
