The Great Southern Hotel is located in a central part of the Melbourne CBD - an easy walk from most landmarks and main streets. My room had all I required, nothing fancy, but nothing below average either. The only downside was my room had no natural lighting, and the hallway to the rooms resembled an old prison. However, the room...

The location of this Hotel is fantastic, close to everything. Unfortunately our room was very old and run down, the air conditioning didn't work properly and the shower pressure was terrible. We would stay here again but only if we got a more modern room.

This hotel suitable for a short stay, convenient located in CBD, short walk to Southern Cross Station. Rooms are adequate, clean enough although a bit more effort in that area would go a long way. Disappointed that they wanted to charge $2.00 to leave your luggage after check out - never encountered that before except at maybe a railway station?

After reading some of the reviews I was a bit worried but my experience staying at this hotel was great. I arrived at about 10:15 and asked the girl at the desk straight up if I could put my bag in their luggage room (as it states check in is at 2pm) but she checked me in straight away! My...

A very old hotel with old carpets, old furniture, small rooms, dirty windows and in desperate need of a paint throughout. Was shocked to find two windows either side of the front door allowing guests passing by to see you sleeping however I cannot fault the staff. They were incredibly helpful and couldn't do enough when trying to find me...

After seeing some reviews I was a bit apprehensive about our stay as we have your children. But it was fine, safe and got the job done. Its not the Hilton but its reasonable for the price. We never had any issues and I'm sure if we wanted more coffee/ milk etc they would be happy to help. A lot...

VERY basic: upon exiting the elevator for our 5th floor room, we still had 1/2 a flight of stairs to reach our room (carrying luggage), no window, the bed was so close to the desk that using the chair was next to impossible, shampoo and soap the only amenities, clock had pixels missing....therefore telling time was a quesstimate! Because I...

Nice quiet hotel, friendly people, located oppositie southern cross station, very noisy outside, but inside not a sound. You could make your own coffee or tea, a refrigerator in the room, nice and a safe. Very neat and modern, the bed was perfect.

This hotel is amazing value. The location is great if you arrive/ leave from Southern cross on the train or bus( from the airport). The hotel is in the free transport inner city area, making it easy to get anywhere in the inner city, and further afield. The rooms are clean and fully equipped with a fridge and tea/ coffee...

The hotel was great in regards to location and price. It's Location would be the best part of this hotel. We didn't experience much of the service, but then again me and my mates just stayed there to sleep. We stayed in a twin room with a 1xKing bed and 2xSingle bed. Super big room and has a lot of...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
