Reviews summary

Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is often commended for its prime location, offering easy access to nearby attractions and dining, which many travelers appreciate. While guests frequently laud the service for being friendly and professional, some feel that the overall value doesn't align with the high costs and expect more luxurious amenities. The rooms boast impressive city vistas and comfort, but noise and dated features have been points of contention.
The atmosphere is described as a mix of luxury, with festive live music, but also has areas seeming in need of rejuvenation. The hotel's cleanliness receives mixed reviews, and although the amenities are generally celebrated, the lack of certain facilities like a pool has been noted.

Detailed Reviews
Summary of review - Service was great, generosity is evident, room is clean and comfortable.
My husband and I stayed at Sofitel on Collins from 1 Jan to 3 Jan 2020 with our son to celebrate his first birthday. We are very grateful and pleased with their generosity and impeccable service.
Full review - The staff knew the occasion we were celebrating, and sent us an Ethan teddy bear (exclusive to Sofitel on Collins) and a bottle of wine after checking in.
Valet parking is $55 per day.
When we got to our room, the cot wasn't set up yet, but we went out for a walk and the cot was set up by the time we returned. They left another bear in the cot for our little one! They also gave him a colouring pack.
There is a tram just outside the hotel which is convenient for exploring the city.
Service was impeccable and thoughtful. Room service offered to turn down our bed in the evening, and gave us a little spray bottle of lavender to help us relax for sleep.
Overall, the room was very comfortable. It was very clean, and the bed was very comfortable. They have a pillow menu to choose from which was a nice touch. The walls are a bit thin; both nights, we had neighboring rooms playing music very loudly late at night to early morning - our son stirred a few times from the noise. We didn't make a complaint because we didn't want to risk waking our son further. However, we mentioned it to front desk at check out, and they apologised, noting that they will place us further from populated areas the next time we visit.
I was very disappointed that the desserts on their restaurant menu wasn't available for room service, but was able to get a reservation their restaurant No 35 through American Express Concierge. We tried to get a reservation on site, but was told that they were fully booked. When we got to the restaurant, another couple walked in and the restaurant was able to offer them a table while letting them know that they need the table back by a certain time. We felt rather disappointed about this contradiction, but didn't dwell on it because the food there was excellent. The wait staff were very helpful (albeit sometimes not as attentive probably because it was a busy time). The highlight though, was when the brought out a little birthday dessert surprise for our son! He loved it, and we were again impressed by their generosity.
Overall, it was a wonderful stay and we left on a high. We will definitely be back.

+1
Where to start! This hotel was amazingly positioned at the end of the free tram zone, with the stop being right outside the hotel and some lovely high end shops within a short walking distance. The hotel has valet parking, which is a bonus and unloading the luggage and sorting out the parking was effortless. We had booked early check in and late check out, so we arrived at around 9am and checked out just before 5pm the following day. The hotel reception is on the first floor, which is accessed via an escalator. Check in was quick and easy and both the reception and valet staff were very friendly. After check in, we took the lift up to the 48th floor. The view down over the atrium is absolutely amazing!
Our room had beautiful views over the east side of Melbourne (including the MCG) the room was spacious with everything we needed. The club Sofitel lounge (35th floor) had wonderful views over the city, with lovely staff and a great selection of food and drinks available. When we visited again (early evening) the lady even remembered our names!
You really need to check out the view from the toilets near the bar on floor 35!
It’s on our list to stay here again on our next trip to Melbourne

My wife and I stayed here for one night redeeming our free night as advantage plus members. As usual we upgraded to Club level and found it was well worth it. The staff in the club lounge are very well trained but there was a small problem during breakfast as it appeared that our al la carte order was forgotten. This was later acknowledged by Yasmin and we appreciated her apology on behalf of the wait staff. Following our request for a room with separate shower , we were given a room on Level 50 stocked with Hermes toiletries - very nice! The room itself was fine and the bed was very comfortable.
The club room provides complimentary lunch, afternoon tea, 2 hours of canapes and beverages as well a breakfast. There has been a change to happy hour since we were last there. There is now a bar person looking after mixed drinks and there is less buffet food, with hot food snacks provided via table service. I think this is an improvement, but we miss the sushi - please bring this back!
We had a great workout in the morning thanks to the very well equipped fitness centre, followed by a great breakfast (including a la carte selection) aside from the small inconvenience mentioned earlier. The breakfast could include some salad or vegetable options and I was disappointed that there were no doughnuts available - perhaps I could have asked that some be brought across from the main breakfast buffet.
Thank you to management for the gift to celebrate my wife's birthday!
Overall a great stay and I expect we will be back again next year.

Room upgrade was most welcome and the attention to detail on all the little add ons during our stay are always appreciated. From the check in to check out everything runs seamlessly. Eating options at the hotel are quite reasonable and it is always interesting to see what artwork is on display and what theatre shows the Sofitel is supporting.

My family stayed at the Sofitel Melbourne for one night during July 2019 and it was a great stay.
We redeemed our free night under Accor Plus and stayed in the Club Room (2nd highest floor) which had wonderful views of the Melbourne Skyline.
Dinner at No.35 was wonderful, fine dining at a fantastic price under Accor Plus. Then the drink vouchers allowed me to enjoy a couple of drinks in the bar that was surrounded by stunning architectural brilliance.
The Sofitel is located at the eastern side of the CBD, within walking distance to pretty much anywhere and right on the popular Collins St.
Special mention to Ben (reception supervisor) for helping us checking in and out of the hotel so efficiently.
It was an excellent short stay for the family and I hope to visit the hotel again soon when the COVID-19 situation improves in VIC, for business or a holiday break.

We would highly recommend the Sofitel for an enjoyable stay.
Due to an unforeseen change in location, we found ourselves staying on the 48th floor of a well maintained hotel, with stunning views across Melbourne, a spotless and spacious room, a very comfortable king size bed, ample wardrobe space, and lovely supplied toiletries.
All of the staff we dealt with were polite, friendly and very efficient. We were even pleasantly surprised to find a chilled bottle of bubbly and a hand written card in our room on our first evening, wishing me a very Happy Birthday.
The only drawbacks were a room phone that didn't connect (reported on the second day, but not attended to) a toilet that at times needed an extra flush or two, and poor lighting in the bathroom, a common problem in many accommodation places.
We will definitely be staying at the Sofitel again.

We have been coming here for years and for good reason. It's close to top end shops, theatres, lovely parks and gardens and public transport. Parliament underground station is just around the corner and the free tram stop is right out the front of the hotel.
Check in at the front desk was very friendly and efficient. We arrived early, happy to leave our luggage and go for a walk, but as our room was ready, the lovely receptionist gave us early check in.
As a regular guest and ALL gold member (gold member tee hee!) I received a late check out, welcome drink vouchers, a great room upgrade and generous welcome gift. We also had complimentary champagne cocktails (yes champagne, not sparkling!) in the Atrium bar, as I was celebrating my birthday.
Our junior suite was well proportioned and comfortably furnished. The views of the Yarra and bay through the full length windows were stunning! We were there on a particularly hot day. The air conditioning was excellent and the wooden shutters did a fantastic job of cutting down on the heat through the windows. The bathroom had a separate tub and shower, with excellent water pressure (unusual in some Australian hotels due to water restrictions). WiFi was easy to access and quite fast.
Pre-stay emails were answered promptly and all requests granted.
We're back again this weekend (this time in a Sofitel club room) and are looking forward greatly to our return.

My wife and I spent three nights here for an anniversary long weekend, and it was worth every cent. We got the junior suite in a corner, and the views were SPECTACULAR. I think it's easily one of the best, if not the best in Melbourne. Photos are exactly as you see on the website; we got the suite on a much cheaper price than usual, but it's something I'd happily pay more next time.
Service was great all around from the front desk to the concierge to room service and housekeeping. I've been to more expensive hotels that were nowhere near as good.
Location is super central as well; we're actually local to Melbourne but decided to leave our car at home and it was very easy getting around with plenty of shops nearby.
Buffet breakfast (with a view!) was fantastic, and oh we ran into Serena Williams too.
Just a couple of VERY minor things - the TV was HD (not even full HD), and placed in a weird location. Well there really wasn't anywhere else they could put it... and it's not like we were there to watch TV anyway. If that's your thing, then the suite isn't for you.
The room does feel oh-so-slightly dated, but definitely not old or crummy in anyway. It is an older building, and I think they've done incredibly well in upkeep considering the age.

Stayed here last month for just one night. Check in was fast, and I was recognised as an Accor Plus Silver.
Rooms felt a bit dated.
Aircon was not working, and only found out from another guest that one of the chillers (or something) required repair, and the hotel was aware (but didn't bother to inform guests checking in).
The "fountain" near the bar doesn't work, they have a speaker playing water noises, which is a bit low budget for a Sofitel property.
Staff were all polite, and the breakfast buffet was one of the better I've seen in many hotels.

Well located for walking to shops, theatres, Flinders St Station, the NGV and Federation Square. The service is polished and professional. A hitch that held up my check in was dealt with by directing me to the hotel bar with a ticket for two free drinks. A text message advised when check in had recommenced and I was upgraded to compensate for the inconvenience.
The corner room on the 47th floor was spacious and provided panoramic views across the city to the sea. Two funky swivel armchairs provide a comfortable place to enjoy the vista. Power points at waist height make plugging in chargers and laptops easy. There’s a USB slot on the bedside light switch panel, too.
A touchscreen panel next to the bed controls all the lights individually or together.
There are all the amenities you would expect from a hotel of this caliber: toothbrush and toothpaste as well as shampoo, soap etc; bathrobes and slippers and some yummy treats (chocolates and biscuit bars). The teas are Madam Flavour and there’s a Nespresso machine. Longlife full cream milk is provided too.
The fridge was stocked with beer and wine and there were in-room snacks for purchase, too.
The marble bathroom has a heated wall mirror and an illuminated magnifying mirror. Toiletries are Balmain brand.
The lifts can be slow. Hot drinks for the breakfast buffet are made to order and can be slow to arrive.
