Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is celebrated for its elegant ambiance and luxurious amenities, despite the absence of a pool or spa. The prime location is a hit for its accessibility to attractions and stunning views, although a handful of guests find it slightly off the beaten path. While the rooms offer comfort and are generally well-maintained, a few travelers have mentioned noise and wear. The hotel's cleanliness receives commendations, but not without a few mentions of inconsistency. Service is often described as professional and attentive, yet some guests have experienced lapses. Despite its upscale offerings, there are mixed feelings on value for money.

Once again, Sofitel Melbourne is ranked ‘Top Shelf’ for a reason.
Upon checking in on level 35, and welcomed back as a Diamond member, we were presented a swift check in.

Our suite was ready an hour prior to the check in time. At this hotel that would not be bothersome as you could relax looking at the views from the large panoramic windows on level 35.

The rooms here are gracious. Large, comfortable and full of flair. Our suite was situated on level 50, looking over Parliament and St Patrick’s cathedral.

Sofitel Melbourne on Collins is a stand out performer. We have stayed at six Sofitel properties in the last 6 months and always look forward to our return to this one particular property.

The bed- offers the real Sofitel experience. Unlike some other properties that may have a harder style pillow positioned on the bed, the pillows here are luxe with a pillow menu positioned by the bed offering a range of pillows and aromatic products too.
The bathroom - marble tiles floor to ceiling plus a seperate vanity away from the wet area.

The living area - chic, contemporary and very comfortable for catching up with a few friends or catching up with business (like we did on this trip)

The food- modern French cuisine including a French inspired breakfast menu and a juicy and mouthwatering dinner menu at No 35.

The hotel includes a well equipped gym, conference facilities and valet parking.

The staff- Derik remembered us from a stay in 2023 while Laura who welcomed us upon check-in, plus all the others friendly lounge staff are attentive and welcoming.
(Speaking of the lounge, what I appreciate here is the finer detail and thought that goes into the hors d'oeuvres menu. A selection of antipasto, cheese and crackers plus three small finger sized hot canapés. This lounge is a true representation of what a lounge should offer during cocktail hour which is designed as hors d'oeuvres unlike some properties serving up roast meats and vegetables where guests fill up plates and treat a lounge visit as their dinner, not leaving anything for guests arriving later)

My list can go on regarding this property; showcasing the fabulously styled rooms and common areas, not to mention being situated in Melbourne’s French quarter and only a short walk to the glam of Bourke St Mall or Southbank.

My recommendation is for anyone visiting Melbourne ensures Sofitel is included in your itinerary.

I am ready to write this long review with a full and happy heart! As a regular Melbourne ‘staycationer’ at other 5-star hotels, I finally decided to use my Accor membership benefits as a Christmas treat for myself, rather than allow them to lapse over the year. I was nervous about choosing a new and unknown hotel but decided to go with Sofitel, for its location on Collins St. I booked a luxury corner room for 2 nights and checked out on 31/12/24.
From the moment I entered the lobby, I knew I had chosen well—the ambience was elegant and peaceful. I was greeted by Tien, who went out of her way to look after me for the remainder of my stay. To my surprise, I was immediately upgraded to a junior suite as part of my membership status (who knew!) and was totally blown away by everything about this suite! Just WOW!
The list of pros is extensive: it was so quiet in the room, with 8 pairs of magnificent window shutters, unbelievable views, and the most breathtaking sunsets. The cloud-like bed, the pillows, the room temperature (with the option to easily adjust), and the lighting control at your bedside were all fantastic. There were beautiful and comfortable chairs and a lounge, enough seating for at least 8 people, including dining chairs, a Nespresso coffee machine, divine bath products, and king-size bath sheets.
The pièce de résistance was definitely the ‘bathologist’ program! I regret not reading the sign on my first night, as I missed the opportunity to have 2 baths instead of 1! Basically, you choose from an aromatherapy menu, and the hotel runs a bath for you, complete with rose petals and candlelight.
I honestly could not get enough of this hotel! Two nights was not enough to explore and try everything on offer. I spent many hours staring out those amazing windows, reading and lounging, ordering room service, and taking care of my body and soul. It was a truly beautiful experience which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Is there anything I can think of that could be improved? The toothpaste is packaged in small plastic-coated packets that are very hard to open. Additionally, the hotel doesn't seem to provide complimentary water after the first night, which I found unusual, and there is no sugar available for tea or coffee. I’m sure a quick phone call to housekeeping could have resolved these issues, but personally, I wasn't too fussed.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.
I especially look forward to seeing the winter skies from the suite in the future. That viewpoint, when it rains, and even thunderstorms, would be amazing!
My sincerest gratitude to Tien for providing such a personal experience that will no doubt continue in the future, to Ryan at No 35 for his warmth and service at dinner and to Alice at breakfast for her exceptional manner and smile.
Merci et à bientôt, Sofitel!

Melbourne is home to some of the worlds coolest little Hotels.

They have rooftop swimming pools that cantilever off the edge of the budling so you can swim and watch people below.

They have staff with more tattoos than a bikie gang leader and they call you “mate” or by your first name (or usually nothing at all)

The check in desk doubles a bar where later you can be served beer from breweries with names you’ve never heard of.

The lobby has the latest techno funk music blaring at levels to make your ears bleed and it’s so dark that you need a torch to find your way to the elevator that talks to you.

And then there’s Sofitel Melbourne on Collins.

The staff wear uniforms and waiters have bow ties. You are greeted with “Bonjour” and you room service meal is delivered on a silver tray with silver flatware.

The menu is ideal. Not too many choices but high quality (very French!)

The buffet breakfast is on the 35th floor and your table is at a window.

Because Sofitel is French there is Nutella as well as Vegemite to smear all over your Croissant.

The staff are unfailingly polite. Nothing is a problem.

Maybe it’s because I’m older now. I’ve been there, done that and life has become full circle but to me this Hotel is just about perfect.

It has substance and charm. Its professional but not cold. Its fully embraces what it is and makes it an asset.

Maybe I could take a lesson from that.

My wife and I spent two nights at the hotel to celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. The staff everywhere throughout the hotel were just lovely. At all times they were courteous, friendly and professional. Nothing was ever too much trouble which made us feel very relaxed and welcomed. So many of the staff come from such diverse age and cultural backgrounds giving rise to wonderful conversations. The room was well appointed and very clean, however, I really struggle with uncomfortable armchairs. The beautiful looking blue velour wingback armchair looked stunning but was too hard to sit on for any length of time. Hard, uncomfortable furniture in hotel rooms are common to so many hotels these days, sadly. The breakfast offering was a pretty standard offering that you might expect at most major hotel chains. I always think that with a little effort this could be a significant attraction and point of difference. The staff were wonderful once more though how they endure the piped piano accordion music every morning is quite beyond me! The ‘Club Sofitel’ was well appointed and the staff were, yet again, delightful. My wife and I had a lovely time and would certainly return in the future.

Stayed here in June 2023 for my wife's birthday. We used our Accor Plus 'free' night to secure the booking and added a little extra in cash to upgrade to a suite. The room offered panoramic views of Melbourne - a real sight to see and great way to spend absorbing the landscape at night or day. The bed was really comfortable, bathroom was also well appointed. As Accor members we had some welcome food items and a bottle of sparkling awaiting us on arrival.

The next morning, the buffet breakfast was good quality and had plenty of options to choose from. We chose to valet park the car and this was a smooth process. All in all, a great location in a nice part of Melbourne if you're taking in a show at nearby theatres or heading to somewhere like Rod Laver (not too far to walk).

This stay was probably the most pleasant one we have had across my many years of being an Accor member and staying in a wide range of Accor properties world-wide. We are measuring this against Accor properties such as the Fairmont in Banff, Lake Lousie, Quebec and Sofitels in Singapore and Macau.

It started with our check-in which went flawlessly. Matt Andraws, Hotel Manager, came out from his office and introduced himself, gave us chocolates and took us up to our room. We were delighted to find that we had been upgraded to a corner suite, consisting of a large bedroom, as well as another large containing a dining table seating 6, full size couch etc on the 47th floor with fabulous view. As we were unpacking, the door bell rang and a bottle of champagne on ice was delivered to us.

Matt was visible throughout the hotel and it was obvious from our observations and conversations with staff that he placed great value on talking with guests and ensuring their stays were enjoyable. On our check out Matt came and said goodbye and escorted me down to street level where my partner was waiting with our luggage.

At breakfast one morning, we were chatting to him about how delicious the omelette was and how we could never get them to taste like that. Unbeknown to us, he organised with the chef who made our omelette, a cooking lesson on how to make the best omelette. The tips the chef gave us have definitely improved ours.

The staff in the Sofitel Club Lounge were pleasant and attentive. We would like to mention Derek, Mia and Kelly. Derek remembered my name, room number and food allergies after one visit to the Lounge. Mia always called us by name and was always anticipating guests needs.

Downstairs at street level, Lachlan carried out his duties with a smile and with care for the guests. He helped us with our luggage to the tram and checked we knew where to get off the tram to catch the airport bus. He offered to stay and put our luggage onto the tram. The previous day, my partner was waiting for me to come down and Lachlan checked whether he needed anything including cold water.
The staff demonstrated their understanding of the correlation between the guest experience, repeat custom and loyalty to the Accor brand.

The hotel is located in a nice part of town with great views and courteous staff, however, I checked out early because:

1. As soon as I entered my room, I noticed a slightly sour musty smell which I later discovered was coming from the pillows, like they needed to be washed badly or thrown out. I asked for them to be changed, which they did, but by then I’d become skeptical about the overall cleanliness of the room.

2. I read that they refurbished the rooms in 2022–where? Couldn’t tell, especially the bathroom which was in poor shape. See photos.

3. Robes have seen better days. Same can be said for towels. No extra blanket in the room.

4. Rooms are not well soundproofed. Even though I was on L45, I could still hear the hum of traffic noise, voices from next room, and entertainment from downstairs.

5. The furnishings in the lobby and public lounge look tired.

Also note that there is no pool, sauna or spa here (in case you’re looking for that information), although you can request an in-room massage.

I left early mainly because I couldn’t trust the bedding, and the noise infiltrating the room.

Overall, Sofitel in Melbourne seems to be well below the standard of the Sydney, Darling Harbour one which I stayed at last year and enjoyed. I thought that the standards would at least match since it’s the same group.

Do not recommend.

Our stay at the Sofitel was great. The location of the hotel was perfect for exploring Melbourne and the views from the rooms were breathtaking. We were very happy with the rooms: the beds were extremely comfortable and we were spoiled with little touches.

The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. The bar in the hotel was also a highlight. We enjoyed relaxing there and enjoying some delicious drinks. We were so happy with our first stay that we even returned to the hotel twice and will definitely come back.

My daughter being a platinum member of Accor purchased us a gift voucher for Saturday high tea. The price was &196- for 2 persons but she paid $177- given a 10% discount for being a platinum member. We were give a table with no view except looking at a high rise building. Please don't be fooled with bay views as the are only 2 tables we saw facing the bay. I must state the the service was great and the high tea excellent. Beautiful decor in the building but the views are not all that great.
When we finished a staff member asked us for the voucher and stated that we had to pay an additional $19- as the cost was $196. I explained to the Manager on duty that my daughter purchased the voucher for $177-. When I made the booking I was not told that I would have to pay the difference. The Manager on duty did not want to hear what we had to say about the discount. I am also a member of Accor and the website clearly states 10% discount for members for Saturday high tea. He insisted that I pay the difference which i did. Its not the money but the principal of it and the attitude of the manager on duty today 08/03/25.
For an excellent high tea experience I encourage you try Bradley Damon on South gate promanade in the city along the yarra river. Only $69- for 2 persons which you will thoroughly enjoy.
