Detailed Reviews
We had a 3 day stay recently at the Grand Chancellor during the Australian Open so rooms were at a premium price for a king room, more than double the normal room rate. The Hotel is well situated close to Chinatown, City shops and many terrific bars and restaurants. Accommodation provided a comfortable king size bed and reasonable pillows (no spares in the wardrobe), the bathroom was very compact but clean and recently renovated and there was a plentiful supply of good quality toiletries. Staff were always courteous and friendly so much so that the charming barman kept the bar open one evening for us and our guests to enjoy a nightcap before heading to our rooms. The room decor is extremely tired with unattractive dark old fashioned furnishings and drapes, and carpet that has seen better days. The new bathroom has an odd step up shower which is quite dangerous to negotiate for older guests. My husband is still recovering from a broken shoulder and found it very difficult to step down out of the shower without assistance. There was no handrail provided and the shower leaks significantly over the tile bathroom floor making the shower exit all the more hazardous. On arrival there is no porterage available nor a ramp into the Hotel so guests have to haul bags up the steps themselves to arrive at reception for check in. Again not so great if you have any physical limitations. Unfortunately there had been a dust storm in Melbourne a few days prior to our stay and the pool was still closed for cleaning for the most part of our time there so we didn’t get a chance to use it. The Grand Chancellor has a 4 star rating which is questionable. It does have a pleasant reception area, restaurant and bar however lifts are tiny and old and the hotel decor and room depressing. I heard refurbishment plans are in the pipeline, it’s such a great location its a shame not to have an equally great hotel on offer.

This review must be read in line with the the fact that this is an incredibly reasonably priced hotel for the centre of Melbourne, especially one with a pool. However it is still a 4 star hotel.
When we arrived the outside facade was slightly off-putting. The reception area was fine and the reception staff were really good.
Our room was fine, although the balcony was really grim and there was a massive gap under the door. The bed was comfy though and the bathroom was decently appointed.
Another point to note was the house keeping staff were atrocious. Did not clean the room properly ie they did not hoover nor replace the toilet roll, could not fold a towel to save their lives and plonked things down in a haphazard fashion.
The pool area was nice. However there are a total of 7 sun beds for 17 floors of rooms. Ridiculous!
Another really irritating feature was that one of the lifts was out of order so we spent ages over the 3 days waiting for a lift to arrive!
But as I say it is very good value for money.

Dear RebeccaLuce Thank you for taking the time to provide your review. We are pleased that you found our hotel to be well priced and well located here in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. It's great to hear that you took advantage of our fantastic roof top pool during your stay and we appreciate your feedback about the sun lounges. We do aim to provide the most comfort for our valued guests and though we would be unable to supply lounges for our entire busy hotel in that one area, we will certainly look into your suggestion of acquiring more beds. We apologise for the inconvenience of one of our lifts being out of service during your stay - rest assured, our team worked tirelessly to have things up and running as soon as possible and we greatly appreciate your patience. We will certainly be following up your feedback regarding housekeeping services, this is very disappointing to learn and not at all representative of our standards here. We're happy that you had a good night's sleep in our comfy beds and we hope to be able to welcome you back in the future to the Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne. Kindest regards, Tara Strickland, Hotel Operations Manager

Upon first impression the hotel looked good, but upon closer inspection it was quite tired. Our room was a little on the dark side as our window overlooked a side street, and the bathroom in particular needed a fresh coat of paint and some modernising.
That being said we did have a nice stay. Our only annoyance was that there was only 1 lift in service during our stay which had to serve 17 floors, meaning you had to wait as it zipped up and down past your floor only to be full when it did eventually arrive.
The hotel was in a good location in the heart of the CBD and there were many, many restaurants and cafes in the immediate vicinity.
We had a nice stay but I probably would not return to this hotel.

We always stay at this hotel when visiting Melbourne.
Rooms are clean, modern and spacious.
The location of the hotel is great and we were able to find a parking spot on the street outside the hotel.
We really enjoyed the buffet breakfast - lots of variety and the staff were really attentive.
This is a great hotel and highly recommended.

Stayed here for 2 nights.
We were apparently upgraded but our room was small with a limited view on one of the lower floors.
Im pretty easy on hotels as Im a believer that you just need a comfortable bed and a nice shower. Views and vast amounts of room arent a priority as you should be out exploring not sitting around in your room all day.
The bed was quite comfortable but the shower was awful taking between 2 to 5 minutes to reach a temperature that was acceptable. In the interim copious amounts of water ran down the drain. I assume that the HWS was on the roof and it took an age for the hot water to get from there to me on level 3.
Staff were quite pleasant and we have nothing but praise for them and the position was very good with easy access to transport and restaurants, pubs etc.
Ive stayed in better places in Melbourne though.

Bad thing first... the bathroom! It’s small, poorly planned and well worn. The toilet is too close to the wall and the roll holder impracticable. The water pressure on the sink is no more than pouring a glass of water. The shower is terrible. I’m 185cm and my head hit the roof. Couldn’t stand under the shower head. Water pressure was very low, it was near impossible to select a suitable temperature. Shower is over bath which is shallow and too small to sit in.
Now, the good stuff... it’s cheap, just $126 per night! Great location near the Mall, shops and lots of restaurants and supermarkets. Had $30 in and out VIP parking next door. The room is spacious with arm chairs and sitting desk. Larger then usual bar fridge. Modern and clean, albeit well worn. The bed was a very comfortable king size, we had a good night sleep. Had a small balcony and two light filled windows. Pool on roof looked great, but was too cold to swim when we came.
Unfortunately, we wouldn’t stay here again based on the bathroom. It’s impractical and hard to use!

Dear benny_s_1992, thank you for taking the time to provide your review. We are so pleased that you found our hotel to be conveniently located, right in the heart of the Melbourne CBD, and our rooms spacious and comfortable! We are very sorry to hear your feedback on the bathroom. We are currently in the process of refurbishing all our guests rooms - many of which have been completed since your visit. We can most confidently suggest a stay in one of our Premier King rooms which offer large, walk in, rain showers and plenty of space- for all heights. We truly do hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back to experience this in the future. AND our roof top swimming pool which is well worth it, even in winter (rest assured, it is heated) at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne! Kindest regards, Tara Strickland, Hotel Operations Manager

+1
For my second stay recently, I was upgraded to a renovated room. It was really lovely, great renovated bathroom, nice tiles, very clean. Towels are large and fluffy, good quality. The bed linen was high quality. The room was very clean. No dust anywhere in fact. The TV was good, WIFI even better. No view to speak of from my room but I wasn't concerned. The room had a functional desk to work at. There was a full length mirror and a wardrobe with a fluffy robe, and room to hang a few clothes. Room service was very prompt and all employees I engaged with were friendly and polite. Being a local, I know most Melbourne hotels and I rate the GC very highly. It is in central CBD and a quick walk to everywhere. I will return.

This was my third stay at GC in a few years. I live in Melb but occasionally have need to stay in the CBD. I booked one night this week and was placed in a room on Lonsdale Street. It can be noisy, but hey, you are in a city. It didn't disrupt my stay at all. I had a king size bed which was nice and comfy with a renovated bathroom, walk in shower which was excellent (great water pressure) with choice of rain or hand held. Toiletries were good quality and thankfully included a toothbrush as I had forgotten mine. Towels very nice. TV was good. Everything was very clean. Room service was by QR code and the restaurant is closed due to COVID. Meals can be ordered from the bar to your room. Breakfast eggs were good, but would be improved with bread that is not from a loaf. Small thing. Overall I really rate the GC, and when I have to stay in the city, I look here first. It is a quick walk to everything, including the shops. WIFI was brilliant. Reception friendly and professional as always.

I stayed for one night in a classic Queen room for $115 including breakfast.
I wonder if I had been upgraded because my room actually had a king bed and seemed to be recently refurbished.
Pros
Position - fantastic spot right in the middle of China Town and all its restaurants.
Close to Parliament station and trams too.
Lovely clean room with a comfy bed.
Delicious, generous breakfast brought to my room
Super friendly staff
An absolute bargain tariff
Cons
Noisy, noisy, noisy.
I had stayed here before in a room right on the street so had asked for one further to the back of the building but it was still very noisy. I took my earplugs but there was still a lot of traffic noise and a very ugly fight in the laneway at 7.30 am (not the hotel's fault)
As many others have mentioned the shower water pressure is a bit erratic but no big deal.
A great hotel but bring your ear plugs !

I found the staff to be friendly and helpful at this hotel. It has restaurant, room service and bar facilities. The rooms are reasonably comfortable; however, they are getting a bit tired and the hot water took a lot of time to heat up. The room key was unreliable and I had to get it replaced a number of times. I also found the street noise from Lonsdale Street loud at times.

Hello Nicstoc
We recommend taking the Sky Bus from Melbourne Airport. You will not need to pre-book, simply look for the Sky Bus ticket office once you have stepped out of the hotel. The bus will drop you at Southern Cross Train Station - from there, it is about a 30 minute walk or you can simply catch a taxi from the station to our hotel. We look forward to seeing you soon. Kindest regards, Tara Strickland
