I was recently in Melbourne on a combined business/leisure trip. The location of this hotel is a standout - only a 5 minute walk to the office, 5 minute walk to Flinders Station, and among a plethora of shopping and dining options. Arriving late at night was a little disconcerting as the hotel is kind of hidden down a laneway, but my uber driver pointed me in the right direction and it was all fine. The room was quiet, comfortable and a decent size. There was a comfortable desk for working and I was able to use the wifi to join a video conference. I also enjoyed the soaking style bathtub, however for those with mobility issues it could be problematic as there was no separate shower. As a solo female traveller, I never felt unsafe. Would definitely stay here again as a mid-range option.

Out of the 4 hotels we stayed in Sydney, Hobart, Launceston and Melbourne this trip, Causeway 353 was the absolute best! For starters, the hotel is centrally located within the City Circle with easy and direct access to a plethora of F&B and shopping. Being in the city circle, you can also easily catch the free hop on/off City Circle Tram No. 35 from any of the tram stops near the hotel; the ride gives you a quick overview of the city circle, and helps you access places a little further out such as the Queen Victoria Market etc.

What differentiated Causeway 353 from the rest of the hotels we stayed at this trip were:
1) The reception is actually manned 24hrs! We realise this is not a given in Australia despite it being the core of hospitality so we really appreciated it as it provides a lot of reassurance to travellers in case of late arrival/check-in and any other assistance required.
2) The heating actually works, very essential during winter!
3) Bedroom slippers were provided! We've been missing this little creature comfort throughout the trip and really appreciated it as again we realise this isn't a given in Australia and the carpets in the other hotels we stayed at were a little gross.
4) Additional bonus: There was a microwave in the room! Really love this practical touch as we were able to heat up food take-outs.

The room was also large, comfortable and quiet. There was also an air purifier at the lift lobby of each level, a nice touch since we are still emerging from the pandemic. The only things we would change are a hand-held shower head vs a fixed one, plus a bidet, both of which again seemed rarities in Australia. Oh and also perhaps slightly more thorough housekeeping as some surfaces including the phone were dusty, and we found a used towel in a bedside table.

All in all, Causeway 353 really offered great value for money, 10 out of 10 we would stay here again if we return to Melbourne. Keep up the good work Causeway!

I stayed for one night at the Causeway in Dec 21. I was very impressed with this budget hotel. The hotel is located in a laneway, and is easiest reached by entering down the lane from tram stop 5 on Collins Street at 330 Collins Street. Reception were friendly and prompt. There was an air humidifier on my floor near the lifts along with a hand sanitiser station. Carpet looked new in hallway and room. Room was small but this was not an issue. TV was good, and the bed very comfortable. Excellent linen, I did not expect such a good standard. Towels were great. Toiletries too, slippers, two complimentary bottles of water, a microwave. Shower was excellent. Security is good with card needed for lift and to enter building in the evening. The only downside for me was the WIFI did not exist. It dropped out continually and in the end I gave up. I couldn't be bothered to complain as I was tired. The A/C also got stuck on a too high temp while I slept and I could not change it having woken up too hot. Again, too late in the night to raise it. Overall, I recommend this hotel to travellers on a budget. It appears to have been recently renovated. Very clean. A 10% discount is offered on meals at the cafes in the laneway. It is a 'happening' Melbourne kind of area with personality. Well done, Causeway 353.

We booked a 3 night getaway staying in a deluxe king room.

One week prior to our arrival the hotel took a one night accomodation pre authorisation on my card.

When phoning staff it was clear everything on their end was disorganised. Staff also proceed to cut me off mid conversation and talk over the top of me which I explained was rude.

Upon arrival the lady checking us in could barely speak jumbling her words and speaking too quickly. I had to ask her to repeat herself several times. I did not feel welcome after a delayed flight and traveling all day. This lady said they would release the one night accomodation hold on my card which would take up to 10 business days to reach my account. On top of this they took the fee for the accomodation and a $100 security bond. So at this point my accomodation that costs $440 has left me $700 out of pocket up front. Never ever have I stayed anywhere that wanted to take so many holds on my card. The hotel needs to address their systems and policies. I voiced this to staff who apologised but clearly couldn’t care less. I asked for all the receipts and that seemed like too much trouble for them and they were unable to provide a receipt or any documentation for the $100 hold on my card.

The room was an average size. This being a king sized room I am glad we didn’t book anything smaller as it would be too squishy for two people. The bathroom has no cupboards so I had to go searching for a hairdryer which was missing an attachment. The tissues and toilet paper and so thin you need lots for them to work efficiently. When you arrive to activate the power you need to insert your room key pass. This means every time you leave and come back the radio alarm clock resets the time and the microwave makes a huge beeping noise which is inconvenient for those who are sleeping. We were issued two passes however it was not practical to leave one behind operating the power as my partner and I had separate activities booked.

The hotel is close to all the services we needed and extra towels were issued promptly on request however the towels are thin and small instead of being large and fluffy.

No mini bar items are kept in the fridge or room. There is a QR code to scan and view the menu and price list however there is no price list attached so the cost of the items is unknown.

I would not recommend this hotel for many reasons and would not stay here again.

Dear Sarah, Thank you for reviewing your recent stay with us and for your feedback. It is disappointing that it appears we have not been able to reach your expectations on this occasion and that issues prevented you from enjoying your time with us. Please know it is standard industry practice for hotels to pre-authorise payment and hold a security bond, this is not a charge to your account. The pre-authorisation and deposit information was communicated to you via your booking channel and again on check in. Our apologies for any miscommunication and any impact to your stay. We are appreciative of your feedback and know that your comments have been noted and taken on board, as we constantly look to enhance every guest experience. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back again in the future. Kind regards, Andrew Watson, Hotel Operations Manager, Causeway 353 Hotel

This is an inner-city hotel, hidden up a small alleyway. That means that most rooms not only don't have a view, but they can also be quite dark, and it is impossible to tell whether or not the sun is shining!
The room was clean and comfortable, with a small fridge and also a small microwave oven. The bathroom was also clean but unusually, no extractor fan. The small plastic tubes of shower gel and bodywash plus the small cakes of hard soap, now seems wasteful and somewhat antiquated, compared to soap/bodywash/shampoo dispensers.

The bedroom lighting isn't the best, especially if wanting to read, as the light is to the side of the bed. The supplied clock has a USB charge slot and there are adequate power points. Reception staff were excellent and the hotel location really is convenient, being less than one minute from Elizabeth St and just a ten-minute walk to Flinders St Station. There are eateries in the same alleyway as the hotel.

As the hotel is 50m down an alleyway, taxis cannot drop off right at the door, so if carrying a lot of luggage, be aware. However, it also means that as there are tall buildings on either side, there is no external noise.

We'd happily stay again, even though there is no outdoor seating area and no in house restaurant, though there is a Thai street food establishment in the basement. The cafe almost across the alley (Blahnik) is good for breakfast and lunch.

First the staff really need to lift their game!
A huge lack of service and knowledge shown by Staff.
we had issue with check in, parking, room, all on the first day and it didn’t improve by day 3.

Staff showed no concern or knowledge of hotel services etc, but showed more a tone of it was all to hard. poor!

Checking in was a chore.

Parking is expensive, the parking is across the road is not part of hotel so if you park once a day $26 if you chose to use your car , leave then return it’s another $26. Make sure staff give you the correct parking ticket or you’ll pay even more each use, yep staff screwed up our ticket on check out.

hallways smelled damp, very strange smell.

Room #472

Room cleaning is by request only, but a least no charge for it, but you have to contact them to have your room cleaned.

Hot water is an issue in hotel as explained to us by maintenance.
as we could only have just lukewarm showers,
the hot water system does not supply the hotel in peak times enough hot water as explained by Staff, even a morning shower at 7:30am was lucky to be lukewarm??!!
Shower head is good and water pressure good but just no hot water .

Beds were good
Air con worked well.

As the hotel is in a lane way surrounded by talker buildings you cannot tell if sunny or not out side by looking out windows as it is always dark.
No natural light in room.

Location of hotel is very good but doesn’t make up for it with all the hotels short comings.

Would we stay here again - no
is there fair value in what we paid for - no

Friendly staff and clean rooms with great block out curtains although the room was small. Be careful when booking online as we had one child with us and clicked one child. When we arrived they took it as a one year old which they don't charge for but she is older and they charged us an extra $35 which was fair enough. Then they said you need to pay another $25 making it $60 extra which was more than half of what my wife and I were charged until I argued that point and then it was okay to just pay the $35.

We enjoyed our 4 night stay with Causeway 353. The location is excellent with plenty of eateries in the same lane way & in the nearby area. We had access to trams on 3 sides which made getting around easy, and the stops are in the free zone. If going outside the free zone you will need a Myki card. Staff weee pleasant & it was a lovely stay. Room was good though no view (next to another building). This hotel has laundry facilities (not enough hotels provide them), though we didn’t need to use them on this occasion. We always stay at the Causeway group of hotels when visiting Melbourne & highly recommended them.

This gorgeous little boutique hotel was so lovely!

The hotel entry is not on Little Collins Street, but a little laneway off it. This cute laneway has some great little eateries (some open for breakfast and some for dinner) and is easy walking distance to Elizabeth Street, Bourke Street, Collins Street and the heart of Melbourne city.

Stayed three nights for work and ta Jed on another for personal.

The view was of buildings on Little Collins Street, but it was still a great city view.

Lots of sunlight into the room from windows in two walls.

The room was surprisingly spacious with a king bed, bedsides, desk with TV and enough room to work on a laptop. Also included a single seat that was in a corner.

Wardrobe with mirror doors had some drawers and a safe. Shelving space also provided with microwave, kettle and a hidden bar fridge.

The good sized bathroom had a bathtub that was very generous and a shower (in the tub). Hairdryer was also supplied.

Room service was provided daily. Complimentary tea / coffee / sugar and milk portions.

What a very disappointing stay. I have stayed here several times over the years and usually did not have any problems or issues. Sadly the same cannot be said for this time. I am also really over Covid being used as an excuse for not delivering the very basic of services in a major hotel.

First issue, the TV did not work for for entire 6 day stay. I was not alone with this, majority of other guests also expereinced the same issue. The response from the staff; "We have called technical people", for 6 days!!! Suggest you engage professionals.

Second issue, housekeeping is only done on request. So if you for get to ask for it, it will not happen.

Third issue, they no longer offer Laundry / Dry-Cleaning Services. Excuse given, "have not since Covid". Oh come on! What has Covid got to do with Laundry services?? You should be out there supporting the local businesses who perform these services.

On the positive side. The staff are all very nice, the place is clean and the WiFi works very well and is free for up to 4 of your devices.

Overall, very disappointed.

There are machines on all floors that seem to be clearing the air, not sure of the exact nature of this cleaning but they ran 24/7. Air purification? The rooms themselves did not have opening windows, so fresh air from outside was not available, but the air conditioning system appeared to be very effective.

How close is the hotel to tram/train stops
Answer from Causeway-Melbourne

Hi Itsaleggthing, Thank you for your question. The Causeway 353 Hotel is located central to a variety of transport options including both tram and train stops. The nearest tram stop for north/south travel is located on Elizabeth Street, approximately 50m from our hotel, while east/west trams can be accessed from the Collins St stop located approximately 30m from our entrance. The best options for train travel are Flinders Street Station and Southern Cross Station with Flinders Street Station located approximately five minutes away on foot, while Southern Cross Station is closer to a ten minute walk depending on pace. Southern Cross Station can also easily be reached by tram from the aforementioned Collins St tram stop. If there is any other way we can assist please do not hesitate to post here on TripAdvisor or speak to any of our friendly staff who will be more than happy to help. I hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you soon. Kind regards, Sam Tobin Guest Services Causeway Hotels
