Montacute offers great value for money accommodation just meters from Salamanca markets in Hobart. A great place to kick off or end your hiking adventure in Tasmania and the owner and his family are welcoming and very hospitable.

I stayed at Montacute in a 8 bed female dorm room for 2 nights in April 2020. I think it is honestly the best backpackers I have ever stayed at. Very cute and clean. Bed was comfortable with clean dooner cover, nice pillow, and a little privacy curtain. Friendly environment but not loud. Would definitely stay again.

An amazing joint. Feels like the majority of travellers had actually paused their adventures just to stay another night here. I know I did. Great setup, location and service. The hostel seems to attract a lot of like minded social travellers looking for more authentic experiences in Tasmania and not just a party destination. Thanks guys!

Hostel absolutely clean, all bathrooms and bedrooms are very clean and well maintained, perhaps the main reason is your Manager, very kind, polite and receptive, the impression that he is always 100% ready to serve everyone with extreme efficiency and kindness

I guess I had read the pre-Covid reviews and expected something exceptional for essentially backpacker accommodation. I paid $75 for a queen bed with shared facilities. I dont think there were many other guests and the owner indicated that he had had to stand staff down while numbers were low. On the plus side my bedroom was clean and the linen appeared fresh. However there was no public area such as a lounge area to relax in and the kitchen was grubby. The whole place reeked of cooked lamb. Most areas had painting equipment in corners...esp my bathroom. It was untidy and only just clean. If the owner had decided to renovate while numbers of guests were down he would have been better to close for a while or reduce the price. In the morning when checking out I was given a long lecture about the failings of the Morrison Government and the Family Court from the owner. All in all not a nice experience. I travel to Hobart frequently and the location is great for me but I wont stay there again.
