Montacute is an excellent Hostel. It is well located in Battery Point and it is very well run. Owner/Manager Antony has a wonderful relaxed approach to running the hostel and he has put in a huge effort to overcome the impact of the pandemic.
We were a party six on a hiking trip and the schedule changes made necessary by weather etc were all accommodated without any fuss. All that was needed was a bit of consideration on our part, and that was returned several-fold.
The bunk rooms are comfortable and the common areas are spacious, clean and well fitted out. The building itself is more like an old mansion than a hostel. It has great friendly hostel atmosphere.
Hostels may not be for everyone and some people it seems have high-end hotel expectations for the cost of breakfast at an inner-city hotel. If you’d prefer shared facilities in a hostel compared with a hotel at several times the price, Montacute is excellent value for money and it rates a definite five star.
Thanks Antony, we enjoyed our stay. It was our second visit and we will be back.

Had a restful stay at Montacute. Liked the flowers that greet you as you come and go, the two miniature bulldogs Lily and Taxi and the cosy corners around the mansion.

Would have been perfect if they didn’t charge A$1.50 for boiled water. But going without coffee or tea meant better sleep despite having a roommate who snored.

Absolutely lovely hostel where the host Anthony does an incredible job especially where other hostels fail. For example, the spacious kitchen is open 24/7 and is well stocked with pots, pans, knives and spices - everything you need to cook. Also, enormous fridges for your groceries that also contain bottled water and beer for purchase on an honor system, just leave the money in a cup on the table. Parking available in the back and amazing views of Mount Wellington from the deck in the back of the house. Great location, an easy ten minute walk from where the airport bus drops you off. So glad I ended up booking and staying at Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse. Highly recommend.

You can’t get a better location as a tourist in Hobart than in Battery Point. Easy walking distance to Salamanca and the wharves.

The price point for Montacute is very appealing but after 8 years it is looking and feeling very tired. In particular the furniture in the communal areas and the bathrooms.

However, ignoring the mould on the bathroom ceilings, it is kept clean and the bedding and towels are of good quality.

The balcony upstairs on a sunny day is divine!

I guess I had read the pre-Covid reviews and expected something exceptional for essentially backpacker accommodation. I paid $75 for a queen bed with shared facilities. I dont think there were many other guests and the owner indicated that he had had to stand staff down while numbers were low. On the plus side my bedroom was clean and the linen appeared fresh. However there was no public area such as a lounge area to relax in and the kitchen was grubby. The whole place reeked of cooked lamb. Most areas had painting equipment in corners...esp my bathroom. It was untidy and only just clean. If the owner had decided to renovate while numbers of guests were down he would have been better to close for a while or reduce the price. In the morning when checking out I was given a long lecture about the failings of the Morrison Government and the Family Court from the owner. All in all not a nice experience. I travel to Hobart frequently and the location is great for me but I wont stay there again.

Serious safety incident
I felt very uncomfortable being approached inappropriately. He touched my waist and said he thought my outfit was “cute” and commented on the way I looked multiple times. Also he tugged on a little girl's PJ shorts while she was alone and also calling them “cute”. Anthony also had a hot temper. I heard him yelling very loudly and publicly to someone over the phone, using vulgar and obnoxious language.

I was humiliated and publicly dismissed from the property for swapping from the top bunk to the bottom bunk of the 4 bed dormitory (which, at the time, was only occupied by one other guest).

Antony confronted and berated me in the kitchen, in front of the other guests, accusing me of being “entitled”. This was at 8 pm at night, and I was traveling alone. I was so intimidated & confused.

He continued to make me feel as unwelcome as possible; sarcastically telling a new guest that if she ever wanted anything all she had to do was ask because asking “will get you far”, knowing I was in ear shot.

I tried to get a refund through Agoda as I only stayed 2 of the 7 nights of my stay but he refused under the grounds of his “cancelation policy”. They called him to mediate the situation and he once again refused to give a refund. When pressed for the reason why, he said “I don’t know” and hung up. Now that’s what I call entitled.

There are other 1 star reviews that attest to his hostile and erratic behaviour. I would NEVER recommend to stay in Montacute Bunkhouse to ANYBODY.

I am the principal of a school in central Victoria. We have used Montacute for our annual Year 8 trip to Hobart for the past few years. Our staff have always reported that the accommodation itself was well-presented and fulfilled our needs; however, they also frequently reported that the hotel owner was difficult to deal with.

During our Year 8 trip to Hobart this week, there was a security breach involving two men, one a guest of the hotel and one other man who should not have been in there, entering the two dorm rooms of our 13-year-old female students in the middle of the night. The men shone their torches around and left when asked to. However, our staff were understandably concerned about the incident.

When our staff spoke with the owner, he was dismissive of their concerns, saying that the students must not have locked the doors properly. While he had asked the two men to leave the hotel, he was unapologetic to our teachers and blamed the young female students for this breach. The teacher rightly pointed out that it was difficult to believe that both doors to the girls' dorm rooms could have been unlocked.

When I spoke with the owner by phone about our concerns, he flew into a rage. During this conversation, I was sworn at at least four times, repeatedly called 'disgusting' for suggesting that there may have been a security breach with the men's key, yelled at, and hung up on. Mistakes do happen, but I have the ultimate duty of care for our students and couldn't leave them in an environment like this. We moved to the Travelodge, where the staff and facilities are more appropriate.

I have since read similar recent reviews about the Montacute owner's behaviour and seeming inability to control his anger when challenged. This appears to have been an experience for solo female travellers in particular. We will never stay at Montacute again, and I would encourage others to exercise caution.

I stayed here one night as I had heard about Montacute and so wanted to check it out. It’s a beautiful building in a quiet location. It’s a backpackers for an older set of customer, or for people willing to pay a little extra than a YHA. A hostel environment with shared kitchen and bathrooms. I paid for a twin for myself - $110 for the night.

My younger self would’ve loved it without question, but my older self was a bit tired from my day and so the loud chatter in the corridors late into the evening was a bit tedious. Earplugs helped and anyway after 12am things settled and I could sleep soundly in my comfy bed. Very close to nice coffee shops snd Salamanca.

WARNING! We had a terrible experience at this hostel. When I first arrived at reception (with my 2 children) I was charged for a private room as I had expected. It soon became apparent we were in mixed gender share room, with 3 men. When I questioned Antony he became verbally aggressive and said he had a no refund policy & we could leave if we weren't happy. I was staying with my 2 children and it was late in the evening so we stayed. It was super uncomfortable and almost felt unsafe. I have since attempted to follow up with Antony to at least request a refund of the difference between the private room and the share room. His response "take it further if you want but I don't do refunds'. I would strongly recommend against staying at this place.

I had a private double at Montacute. The rooms are spacious and gorgeous. Great beds, nice sheets, even a heater. The Battery Point neighborhood is delightful; off-street parking is a bonus, along with laundry. And pups in the yard. The kitchen is sunny and a fine gathering spot, as is the balcony on the second floor.

Bathrooms are shared, but there are lots of them, and they're well maintained. Fast wifi.

Two minor comments: My double had hooks but nowhere to store any clothes. A few shelves or a bookcase or drawers would be nice. Also I had a great view, but because of the shared balcony, had to keep shades drawn once I realized strangers could walk by. (Just something to be aware of.)
