Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The hostel was clean and nice with friendly staff. They showed everything when I arrives there. The dorm were nice and check in was very easy. Also, there was very nice little back yard. Bed was comfy and curtains on the bed gave some privates. Absolutely lovely hostel.

BEWARE ESPECIALLY SOLO WOMEN!!! Anthony was rude, obnoxious & scary towards me & other fellow travellers. He stood over me, intimidated me, loudly slammed furniture in the kitchen whilst people were having breakfast. This place is not a safe or friendly place to stay as the owner has rapid mood swings & takes them out inappropriately on women.

I had a queen bed room to myself two nights, lovely old world very clean, enjoyed it immensely I was able to come and go quite easily only a few minutes walk to Salamanca and the harbour, highly recommend preachers the little pub just 100 m away and the retro cafe by Salamanca for the coffee best latte !

I stayed here one night as I had heard about Montacute and so wanted to check it out. It’s a beautiful building in a quiet location. It’s a backpackers for an older set of customer, or for people willing to pay a little extra than a YHA. A hostel environment with shared kitchen and bathrooms. I paid for a twin for myself - $110 for the night. My younger self would’ve loved it without question, but my older self was a bit tired from my day and so the loud chatter in the corridors late into the evening was a bit tedious. Earplugs helped and anyway after 12am things settled and I could sleep soundly in my comfy bed. Very close to nice coffee shops snd Salamanca.

The location of this hostel was good. But it’s massively overpriced. The worst thing about it is the owner Anthony. He’s rude and pretentious, looking for any opportunity to talk about himself while making everybody else feel uncomfortable. We were glad to be leaving here - never again.

You can’t get a better location as a tourist in Hobart than in Battery Point. Easy walking distance to Salamanca and the wharves. The price point for Montacute is very appealing but after 8 years it is looking and feeling very tired. In particular the furniture in the communal areas and the bathrooms. However, ignoring the mould on the bathroom ceilings, it is kept clean and the bedding and towels are of good quality. The balcony upstairs on a sunny day is divine!

WARNING! We had a terrible experience at this hostel. When I first arrived at reception (with my 2 children) I was charged for a private room as I had expected. It soon became apparent we were in mixed gender share room, with 3 men. When I questioned Antony he became verbally aggressive and said he had a no refund policy & we could leave if we weren't happy. I was staying with my 2 children and it was late in the evening so we stayed. It was super uncomfortable and almost felt unsafe. I have since attempted to follow up with Antony to at least request a refund of the difference between the private room and the share room. His response "take it further if you want but I don't do refunds'. I would strongly recommend against staying at this place.

Serious safety incident
I felt very uncomfortable being approached inappropriately. He touched my waist and said he thought my outfit was “cute” and commented on the way I looked multiple times. Also he tugged on a little girl's PJ shorts while she was alone and also calling them “cute”. Anthony also had a hot temper. I heard him yelling very loudly and publicly to someone over the phone, using vulgar and obnoxious language. I was humiliated and publicly dismissed from the property for swapping from the top bunk to the bottom bunk of the 4 bed dormitory (which, at the time, was only occupied by one other guest). Antony confronted and berated me in the kitchen, in front of the other guests, accusing me of being “entitled”. This was at 8 pm at night, and I was traveling alone. I was so intimidated & confused. He continued to make me feel as unwelcome as possible; sarcastically telling a new guest that if she ever wanted anything all she had to do was ask because asking “will get you far”, knowing I was in ear shot. I tried to get a refund through Agoda as I only stayed 2 of the 7 nights of my stay but he refused under the grounds of his “cancelation policy”. They called him to mediate the situation and he once again refused to give a refund. When pressed for the reason why, he said “I don’t know” and hung up. Now that’s what I call entitled. There are other 1 star reviews that attest to his hostile and erratic behaviour. I would NEVER recommend to stay in Montacute Bunkhouse to ANYBODY.

I cannot speak highly enough about this accommodation. Everything you could possibly need or desire is there. The host is a delight and could not be more helpful. Free parking and you can walk to the harbour/city centre easily. The bedding/towels/property is spotlessly clean and well maintained. - Thank you

Excellent hostel, very clean, central location, fantastic amenities and friendly host. I only stayed here one night yet would happily stay again next time I’m in Hobart. Rooms are decent size, plenty of bathrooms available and kitchen facilities are wonderful. Lovely balcony out back for afternoons plus generous backyard to sit or stretch. Highly recommended.
