The Alabama is a small art-filled hotel offering boutique budget rooms in the heart of Hobart. Please note that all rooms have shared bathrooms, there are no rooms with a private or en suite bathroom. If this is not your style, we understand, but please be aware of this before staying and / or reviewing. Each room has a small fridge, a heater, hanging space for your clothes and a fan for warmer weather. Hobart is rarely hot, air-conditioning is not needed here. Even on that rare hot day, the city cools down at night and the windows open to let in a breeze. It is perfectly safe to have a window open at night while you sleep. Tea and coffee is available to purchase from reception, which is open from 8am - 9pm daily. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms. Our inner city location means we do not have off street parking. Unless you're planning a longer trip through Tasmania we wouldn't recommend hiring a car for your stay at the Alabama as inner city parking costs do add up.

conference time again ! personally I wasn't looking forward to it. I arrived at the Alabama and I knew all would be fine , because I had chosen not to stay at the sterile conference venue , but a warm welcoming environment where I was number one , not one amongst many . Listening to lectures , networking at meal breaks leaves you" brainnumb" , the last thing you want after a long day is to go upstairs to a predictable room - they remind me of supermarkets -you know exactly which aisle to walk down and what shelf to find the goods you wish to buy as they all use the same planagrams. Hell no , I enjoy being spoilt ! I even like to be considered to be an individual . I enjoy sleeping on a mattress that is thick and luxurious , and then in the morning having a freshly made cuppacino 5 steps from my room. No TV - who cares ! With free wireless internet it isn't needed. The bathroom , may be shared , but as no guest whilst I stayed over 4 days needed to use the facilities at the same time as me , the item could be seen as an advantage - that being , it was larger and cleaner than the average hotel bathroom and no bathroom smells can resonate into your bedroom where you wish to relax.
Handmade soap, every room decorated differently but invitingly, warm smiles at reception - and certainly not forgetting great coffee made my experience here fantastic and leaving the other conference delegates envious that they too had not booked the wonderful experience that I had .

The Alabama is a welcome relief for anyone trying to avoid the generic hotel experience. It's really well thought out, cozy, and with beds to die for. All rooms share common male/female bathrooms which generally isn't a problem - a couple of times I walked into the bathroom and it looked like a storm had hit it only to find it spotlessly clean a little while later. A credit to the Alabama staff, less so those guests who like to think they are ducks.

If you're a light sleeper, the front rooms are not for you - unless Tasmania's love affair with the car abates and Liverpool Street ceases to become a major arterial road. Until then, ask for a room at the back and/or bring earplugs.

Lovely staff, comfy lounge.

I hugely enjoyed my stay at the Alabama Hotel and can't recommend it highly enough. At first I was 'wait shared bathrooms really?' but a look over Hobart hotels shows that most hotels here have shared bathrooms at this price point and the general loveliness of the Alabama is much greater than other hotels of this price (and even many more expensive ones!) I truly found the shared bathrooms not to be an issue which was great. As a lone female traveller I was very wary but it didn't bother me at all when I got there. Just like being in a nice gym, they had male and female bathrooms, the one I used was right across the corridor from my room which was easy and it had two showers and a toilet, I never saw anyone else there.

The Alabama Hotel and its hosts are just so lovely and helpful. The hotel itself is really pretty and quirky, with a great common area that you actually want to be in. The rooms are smaller due to the lack of ensuite but perfectly acceptable with good space for clothes etc and hangers yay! It's such a great central location as well.

The hosts could not be more helpful to me for all my many, many questions and gave me tonnes of advice, local knowledge and good chat. Also the wifi is free and the password was handed over the minute I arrived, without me even having to ask. Storing my luggage was no problem at all, even though I arrived very early and left on my last day very late. Late night access is easy with a passcode so it's safe, secure and easy to get in late at night.

Others reviews who say it feels like being at home are absolutely right, it was such a great experience for me, so much nicer than inhuman hotel chains. I slept really well and really enjoyed my stay. And it's really nicely decorated!

Don't let the shared bathrooms put you off! It's more than worth the money and I've recommended it to everyone I know as well.

Even though I could have stayed with friends on a recent trip to Hobart, I wanted to spoil myself and opted for a hotel instead. Staying at the Alabama, it felt like I got the best of both worlds. Not only did I have a beautiful spacious room to myself, the management treated me like an old friend. Kelly was a human Google of information about what there is to do and see around town, and Aeden took every opportunity to engage in animated banter about some of the better beer and drinking places around town. (He moonlights as a whiskey distiller so he knows his liquor) The location is perfect, a thirty second stroll to the Elizabeth Street Mall and less than five minutes to Salamanca. The rooms were funky with crazy, and crazy good, artworks adorning the walls. The big beds were uber comfy and more than warm enough to fight off the Hobart chill. The highlight would be the common area though. Retro couches are spread around the indoors section, an abundance of herbs and succulents surround a beautiful outdoor area that overlooks Liverpool Street. The price is spot on for someone who wants something more than a backpackers without paying for things like melted chocolates on the pillow or disposable shower caps. I extended my stay by another night just so I could stay longer at this home away from home. See you again soon Aeden and Kelly.

Very happy with our stay at the Alabama Hotel. Our room was clean, smelled lovely, although in mid-winter it was a bit cold. The bed was super comfortable, and the room equipped with all the basics (storage, a little desk and chair, a mirror, plus a fridge).
The staff were fantastic and super helpful.

Our room (#4) was quiet, and the only noise we heard was a very talkative malamute having a chat with guests one morning. Naturally we raced out and down to the communal area to give pats to the friendly and giant dogs.

The bathrooms were clean and positioned close to the rooms. As other reviews have stated, if you want to wash your hair and you're over 175cm tall, it's a little uncomfortable under the shower heads. Otherwise the showers had good pressure and were toasty warm.

Will definitely stay again.

Rooms look little like the picture. Shared showers and toilets. No parking except at night. Not very nice or efficient reception staff. Great location, clean sheets. We were glad to leave and will not return

Absolutely loved staying here and will definitely be back. I was travelling on my own and found the central location perfect - within a short walk of everything! The staff here are its best resource - so friendly I felt like I was coming home every evening, and nothing was any trouble. Loved starting the day with an early morning coffee, or coming in at the end of the day for a quiet drink, enjoying the very welcoming and funky decor, and chatting about anything and everything. I don't usually go for a shared bathroom but it really was no problem here and everything was spotlessly clean and fresh.

Just to mention I have never written a review on a hotel in my entire life. But for this hotel is honestly felt like I had to write down somewhere how amazing it was. I’ve been in many hotels and hostels, and most of them have a cold atmosphere, or are a bit dirty. Even the more expensive ones. With this hotel I had such a special feeling, like it felt really really good. Clean, kind, and eye for detail. A lovely lobby, super cozy!! Or how we would say in Holland: super gezellig! To whoever who is not shire wether to choose this hotel: do it. You’ll love it.

Regards Rozanne

I chose Alabama Hotel for my last accommodation in Tasmania. It's a quirky hotel with some vintage decoration. Alabama Hotel is located so close to Woolworths, where I bought my snack supplies from.

I parked my car at the 24 hr parking place which was about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. As I walked up the stairs at the hotel, I could see some hanging flamingos and a cafe. The reception desk was located inside the cafe area. Alamaba Hotel also has a balcony with some tables and chairs to hang out at.

I was given a handmade soap and a towel, enough amenities for my two days stay. They also prepare free water at the corridor that I could bring to my room. The room was really cozy with a heater, fan, and a working desk.

One of the most important things for me is the number of power points that a hotel room has. I comfortably charged my power bank, camera and phone at the same time! I was incredibly grateful for electricity and free Wi-Fi that they provided.

The shared bathroom was spotless and most of the time I didn't have to share it with other people. Mind you, it was an off peak season when I was there.

Alabama Hotel is an excellent place for staycation around Hobart area and provided a comfortable stay for a budget hotel. It's one of people's favorite places to stay when there's music or food festival in Tasmania. Just make sure to book in advance to secure your spot.

We’re repeat visitors from Melbourne and just love so many of the Alabama’s features. Location is a joy - so close to Criterion Street ( for brekkie) and an easy stroll to the waterfront. Beds are so comfy and shared bathrooms not a problem. And...because it’s so affordable we spend our savings on great places to eat! (Looking at you, Agrarian Eatery!!)
We’ll be back for sure!

Hi CTRocks! Sorry for the delayed response (we're not on TripAdvisor on the reg!) but it looks like past guests have all hit the nail on the head. Our bedrooms are all private but none have ensuites—we have two bathrooms on each of our two floors. Booking directly through our website is best! You're always welcome to email us with any queries, too. See you in March?
