The Alabama is a small art-filled hotel offering boutique budget rooms in the heart of Hobart. Please note that all rooms have shared bathrooms, there are no rooms with a private or en suite bathroom. If this is not your style, we understand, but please be aware of this before staying and / or reviewing. Each room has a small fridge, a heater, hanging space for your clothes and a fan for warmer weather. Hobart is rarely hot, air-conditioning is not needed here. Even on that rare hot day, the city cools down at night and the windows open to let in a breeze. It is perfectly safe to have a window open at night while you sleep. Tea and coffee is available to purchase from reception, which is open from 8am - 9pm daily. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms. Our inner city location means we do not have off street parking. Unless you're planning a longer trip through Tasmania we wouldn't recommend hiring a car for your stay at the Alabama as inner city parking costs do add up.

The Alabama is a cracking little place to stay in the heart of Hobart. It's quirkily decorated and staffed by quirky individuals and it is very comfortable. We spent four nights here, really appreciating the location (it's a short walk to pretty much anything.. though it's Hobart, just about anywhere is a short walk from anything....) and facilities. The lounge is a particularly comfortable place to spend a few hours recharging and relaxing. Two small criticisms: the lounge closes quite early (8pm) and because it's located within the window view of several rooms access to the laundry is strictly restricted to 10am-6pm, which can be less than convenient. But overall, we picked a winner.

Hey legends, thanks for the corker review. Your criticisms are noted! It's all about guest satisfaction for us—you're bang on regarding the restricted laundry hours (so our adjoining guest rooms aren't disturbed during early mornings or evenings), and our guest lounge closes up at 9pm each night so everyone can get a good night's sleep (also that's when we knock off and we've gotta lock up the booze and the cash). We're glad you can appreciate that and still love us, because we love you right back.

Don't be put off by the stairwell which looks a bit gloomy at the bottom but leads up to this smart little budget hotel upstairs. I shared a twin room with a travelling companion: great beds, room quiet, warm and comfy, great decor, service friendly. The shared bathroom was very clean, we enjoyed the hand-made soaps. There's a small but interesting range of beverages plus coffee available on site, bar snacks but no meals (you can bring your take-aways into the lounge to enjoy with one of their beverages).

A friend and I stayed here back in February for a 2 night stop over in Hobart. A real hidden gem. Staff friendly, price very friendly! and although the bathrooms are shared, they are very clean. The place was fully booked when we stayed in a twin room but we didn't hear a thing. There is a little balcony at the front overlooking Liverpool street for smokers and a end of the day drink. They have a coffee machine and offer a small selection of local beers, wine & snac.ks. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is there is no close all night car parking but as we didn't have a car that was fine. Easy walk down to mona ferry and constitution dock and the Salamanca markets and lots of cafes and restaurants within walking distance to choose from. A very good budget choice. Don't

Hey there, thanks for your lovely review! We're glad you had such a ripper stay here at the Alabama. Just a heads up, there is actually a close all night car park just 50m from us—Vodafone Central is 24/7 and its lower ground level has a little walkway right through onto Liverpool Street. (There's also Argyle St Carpark but it locks up overnight.) Rates are also really decent at both, and if you're visiting from a capital city you'll likely think they're a bargain. Easy as! We hope to see you again one day, and thanks again.

AMAZING - Stay here! The staff are amazing, so welcoming and the place is a home away from home. Its in the middle of everything you need and Ill be booking this place as soon as I have a return trip to Hobart. I travelled alone, am mid- late 20s, and felt so comfortable throughout my stay. Stay here. Do it.

Good location, close to Salamanca and the gardens. Cool decor in the hallways and good little bar/cafe. The staff are very friendly. Slight issue with the wifi. You have a data allowance per device which I think would be ok if you're only staying for a day but any longer and it runs out, blocking your device. Perhaps a daily allowance or the option the unblock for longer stays would be appropriate. You do get quiet alot of street noise in the early hours (garbage trucks mainly) but thats to be expected when staying on a main street in the middle of the city.

Hi Dan, it was a pleasure hosting you recently. Thanks for taking the time out to review the Alabama. You stayed in one of our Deluxe rooms which are larger and street facing. We have recently installed soundproofing on the windows on those rooms but I agree, in the middle of the city, it’s probably going to be possible to hear trucks going past. In regards to the wifi the current per-device limit is 4GB. To give a vague idea; this amount is enough to view roughly 4 full-length films and is the amount that most Australian phone companies give you for an entire month. Most of our guests do not even use a quarter of this amount. Out of interest, I just ran the numbers and the average total per-device use for a 4-night stay (the same length as yours) is 540mb. We do not charge for our wifi and our plan is not unlimited, therefore we have to ration it out between all guests. You hit over 4GB on a couple of devices, effectively using more than 16x more data than a typical guest. I’m sorry if you felt this was unjust enough to leave a negative review, but for any other potential guests reading, this high usage does not at all reflect usual customer needs.

I loved the place as soon as I walked in, but when I saw the David Bowie cushion on the bed, that was it. Everything we needed including a very hip lounge to hang out in. Great music, decor and a good beer, cider and wine list. Shame the reception lounge closes at 9pm. If you want to feel at home, avoid drunken twenty somethings and stuffy rich oldies, this is for you.

Love the Alabama hotel, wish there were more like it in other cities. This was my 3rd visit, first for my partner and enjoyed just as much as before. Friendly staff who make good recommendations for food, sites, love the bar, the beers, the soap and most of all the comfy bed. So comfy, I always sleep like a log here. Keep up the great work, see you again soon

Stayed in December and found the staff very friendly. love the deco, very retro, someone has a good eye for op shopping and picking up some groovy pieces from another era. The rooms are basic, comfortable bed, bedside table, bar fridge and wardrobe. Some quirky cushions and pictures on the wall. Window was difficult to open and only opened a little onto a lane way. The weather was hot and the room heated up. A ceiling fan would be good, however they had just purchased some desk fans, but there was nowhere to put it to get any real relief. The communal bathroom on the second floor had a toilet and two showers, one was very cramped and used less so remained cleaner and dryer. I can understand why the other one was so wet when people hop out to get toiletries they forgot and drip

It was my partner and I's first trip to Hobart and stayed here on recommendation from some friends of ours and it didn't disappoint! Its smack bang in the middle of Hobart perfect for exploring. The lounge, cafe/bar and balcony area is like something out of a american 70s show sitcom. really enjoyed sitting around sampling the great range of beers and spirits they had on offer. The wifi is super quick too :). We stayed in a double room which was big enough for us and had a little fridge and some hanging space as well. the bathrooms were well equipped and clean. overall this hotel-hostel hybrid is definitely recommended and cant wait to come back!
