The Alabama is a small art-filled hotel offering boutique budget rooms in the heart of Hobart. Please note that all rooms have shared bathrooms, there are no rooms with a private or en suite bathroom. If this is not your style, we understand, but please be aware of this before staying and / or reviewing. Each room has a small fridge, a heater, hanging space for your clothes and a fan for warmer weather. Hobart is rarely hot, air-conditioning is not needed here. Even on that rare hot day, the city cools down at night and the windows open to let in a breeze. It is perfectly safe to have a window open at night while you sleep. Tea and coffee is available to purchase from reception, which is open from 8am - 9pm daily. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms. Our inner city location means we do not have off street parking. Unless you're planning a longer trip through Tasmania we wouldn't recommend hiring a car for your stay at the Alabama as inner city parking costs do add up.

Detailed Reviews
Ayden and Kelly were such awesome hosts, all the tips they gave us about Hobart and the surrounding area were incredible and they were so accommodating of our requests.
The room we had was cosy, the bathroom very clean, and the lounge area was so damn cool!
I definitely recommend staying here.

Loved everything about the Alabama Hotel. It has art, class, warmth, great customer service and character. Starting with excellent communication and travel advice, even before we arrived. The customer service is charming and super helpful. The reception/bar/lounge takes you back in time, with the impeccable decor and paintings. Love the Bill Murray cushions. The bar has an excellent selection of Tassie whiskies, wines, beers and gins. The rooms are comfortable and the shared bathrooms are clean. The location of the hotel is fantastic. It's in the heart of the city and close to everything - Salamanca market, Farm gate market etc.
Definitely returning to the Alabama on my next visit to Hobart.

I loved my stay at Alabama Hotel. The hotel is metres from the mall in the city centre and a short walk from my favourite pub The New Sydney Hotel. Kelly and Aedan have done a magnificent job of decorating the place and it felt like home away from home. Our 'standard queen' room was beautifully decorated and was cosy and comfortable on a cold Hobart wintery weekend. Drinks in the lounge bar are a must and I highly recommend the bloody mary! Take a seat with 'Bill Murray' or 'Bowie' (cushions), sit back, relax, and enjoy some records. This boutique hotel is well run, attracts a wonderful mix of guests, and is extremely well priced for the high standard of accommodation. The shared bathrooms are quite basic, and won't be for everyone, but we didn't have any issues with getting in there for a nice hot shower. I can't wait to stay there again and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates a quirky, unique, and inviting hotel.

This is the kind of place that I want to tell all my friends about.
The hotel is in a great location (walking distance to all of Hobart's good stuff), has comfortable rooms and shared areas that are oozing with personality and charm, and super friendly and welcoming staff.

Just back from another friendly and comfy stay at the Alabama.
Highly recommend again. Staff are lovely and very keen to make sure you enjoy your stay in Hobart. Twin room this time with just as snugly warm beds, great linen and towels and love the home made soap. Love the new bits of food available, the cheese platte is great as are the feta and spinach muffins. Great value for money
Also about Hobart. It's is a brilliant place with so much to do and every time I am over there is more opening and happening. Every service person we met was friendly and proud of what they were offering.. With good reason. And the best bit is the weather was better than the mainland!

Honestly, I just loved the place. Cheap, funky, budget accom. No pretenses, but wow, so cool and comfortable. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Hobart. My other half felt exactly the same way. Will be back!

I had the pleasure to stay 4 nights at this great, central hotel in Hobart. If you are looking for a place to stay that is not going to break the bank and is full of charm and character then this is the place for you. Firstly, it's in a great location, central to everything that Hobart has to offer - everything is in walking distance or a short cab ride. Secondly, if you're looking for character, it has it in bucketloads. The communal sitting room and bar area is fun and inviting, lit by candles and lamps at night and you can enjoy the great selection of music that is played on the record player - yes an actual record player!. The range of wine, whiskeys and craft beers is great and the Bloody Mary's are sensational. As far as cleanliness and comfort go this hotel also gets top marks. The beds are super comfy, the towels fluffy, the sheets starched to perfection and the locally made soaps a sweet touch. The lovely, helpful friendly staff provide the cherry on the top of this very pleasing accommodation cocktail!

The perfect place to stay for fuss-free travelers who are into experiencing the city outside of their hotel room walls. Alabama Hotel is 110% cool cool cool. Beautifully designed, kistch and fun. Rooms are clean and adequate for sleeping and resting after a long day exploring Hobart. I never had an issue getting a shower in the shared bathrooms, and everything was clean. Cafe/Bar area was great to kick back, relax have a drink and read, which you can aso do on the balcony. Situated smack bang in the middle of the Hobart City Centre you are a bit of a walk from the water, and parking is something you might need to consider if you have a car (which we did) but we found a solution in all-day parking a few blocks away (it was the weekend). Staff provided 10/10 service and made the time for lovely chats. We loved it here and will be back.

conference time again ! personally I wasn't looking forward to it. I arrived at the Alabama and I knew all would be fine , because I had chosen not to stay at the sterile conference venue , but a warm welcoming environment where I was number one , not one amongst many . Listening to lectures , networking at meal breaks leaves you" brainnumb" , the last thing you want after a long day is to go upstairs to a predictable room - they remind me of supermarkets -you know exactly which aisle to walk down and what shelf to find the goods you wish to buy as they all use the same planagrams. Hell no , I enjoy being spoilt ! I even like to be considered to be an individual . I enjoy sleeping on a mattress that is thick and luxurious , and then in the morning having a freshly made cuppacino 5 steps from my room. No TV - who cares ! With free wireless internet it isn't needed. The bathroom , may be shared , but as no guest whilst I stayed over 4 days needed to use the facilities at the same time as me , the item could be seen as an advantage - that being , it was larger and cleaner than the average hotel bathroom and no bathroom smells can resonate into your bedroom where you wish to relax.
Handmade soap, every room decorated differently but invitingly, warm smiles at reception - and certainly not forgetting great coffee made my experience here fantastic and leaving the other conference delegates envious that they too had not booked the wonderful experience that I had .

The Alabama is a welcome relief for anyone trying to avoid the generic hotel experience. It's really well thought out, cozy, and with beds to die for. All rooms share common male/female bathrooms which generally isn't a problem - a couple of times I walked into the bathroom and it looked like a storm had hit it only to find it spotlessly clean a little while later. A credit to the Alabama staff, less so those guests who like to think they are ducks.
If you're a light sleeper, the front rooms are not for you - unless Tasmania's love affair with the car abates and Liverpool Street ceases to become a major arterial road. Until then, ask for a room at the back and/or bring earplugs.
Lovely staff, comfy lounge.

Hi CTRocks! Sorry for the delayed response (we're not on TripAdvisor on the reg!) but it looks like past guests have all hit the nail on the head. Our bedrooms are all private but none have ensuites—we have two bathrooms on each of our two floors. Booking directly through our website is best! You're always welcome to email us with any queries, too. See you in March?
Hi Monica,
I'm probably a bit late to answer this question for you, but for anyone else wondering about hairdryers - yes we have them! Just ask at reception.
Happy travels!
Kelly
Hi You will need to contact the Alabama Hotel directly. Their details are available online. Cheers
