The Alabama is a small art-filled hotel offering boutique budget rooms in the heart of Hobart. Please note that all rooms have shared bathrooms, there are no rooms with a private or en suite bathroom. If this is not your style, we understand, but please be aware of this before staying and / or reviewing. Each room has a small fridge, a heater, hanging space for your clothes and a fan for warmer weather. Hobart is rarely hot, air-conditioning is not needed here. Even on that rare hot day, the city cools down at night and the windows open to let in a breeze. It is perfectly safe to have a window open at night while you sleep. Tea and coffee is available to purchase from reception, which is open from 8am - 9pm daily. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms. Our inner city location means we do not have off street parking. Unless you're planning a longer trip through Tasmania we wouldn't recommend hiring a car for your stay at the Alabama as inner city parking costs do add up.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

For me, what makes a stay truly exceptional is the quality of hospitality extended - and you will not find more genuine and caring hosts than at the Alabama. They are passionate about their business, their guests and Tasmania. Nothing is too much trouble and feedback is genuinely welcomed as they strive to continually tweak and improve their boutique business.
OK, the rooms are not en suite and you may be nervous at the thought of sneaking down a corridor in your PJ's .....but seriously consider if for you, this factor is a deal breaker, because you could miss out on 1st class Tasmanian hospitality in a great location if you decide not to risk it.
My advice? Pack your dressing gown and go for it!
ps Forgot to mention that the beds are also snuggly & comfy and for light sleepers, ear plugs are provided - just in case city noises disturb your slumbers.

We've traveled all the world but consistently come back to The 'Bama, not just because it's down the road from our house but also because it's the best place to kick back with a gin and watch the locals pass by from a safe distance.

Our favourite days always feature an afternoon on the balcony with Kelly, Aiden, Ash + co taking care of all our hedonistic needs.

If you're a Hobart local looking for a chilled out spot to relax, hold business meetings with pet food representatives or spy on people coming in and out of Gould's this is your jam.

I stayed 3 nights at the Alabama in the dead of winter and loved every minute of it.

I stayed in a standard queen with shared bathroom. All facilities were clean and well managed. They don't do housekeeping to your room everyday, but maybe that's different in the more deluxe rooms. This is boutique on a budget after all!

The water was nice and hot in the showers and the heater in the room kept you toasty through those cold Hobart nights. The front desk staff is awesome and will direct you wherever you need to go. The location is right in the middle of town so you can walk everywhere!

Great wifi and lounge area as well! Free water for guests is also a nice touch. Overall, fantastic place to stay...I could have stayed forever!

You need to know right away, while I like the more unusual places to stay I also like to be comfortable. This hotel fits the bill. It is right in the middle of downtown Hobart, has a very "local" feel to the entrance because it's a small doorway and then you go upstairs to reception. The beds are awesome! Crisp, clean linens, fluffy towels, and your own beautiful handmade soap bar. The bathrooms are shared and clean, I almost always had one to myself, so it wasn't like there was a lot of traffic in them.

In the afternoon/evening you can sit out on their deck or inside and have a glass of wine or drink of just about any kind. They have snacks - I got their spiced roasted nuts which were perfect. Wifi worked well so I could do a bit of communicating.

And then there's the staff. I don't know how they do it, but each and every one of them was unfailingly pleasant and helpful. Didn't matter what the request, their response was "Oh yes" with a smile, or giving it extra thought to find what I needed.

This is really a great little gem of Hobart's.

It was listed as budget accommodation, but this little gem is far from cheap in what it has to offer.
Kelly& Aiden put the welcome mat out providing more of a guest house ambience in inner Hobart
The only thing cheap is the price
I'm hesitant to post this as it may mean that more may
discover it & make it unavailable

The Alabama is an interesting hostel-hotel hybrid. You understand almost immediately why people like the place: the vibe, the friendly staff, the lounge, the art, the simplicity, and the location is excellent.

The beds and bedding are really comfy (as long as you like firm mattresses), and most rooms are generously sized. The owners could easily have squeezed a pile of bunkbeds into some of them, but to their credit they went for a hotel concept instead. I really really missed having at least a basin in the room. I appreciated the fridge.

The whole place smells mildly of the handmade soaps they provide for guests (and sell at reception). Fresh water is provided in glass bottles on both floors for you to take into your room. Wi-fi is generally good (a bit patchy occasionally) and with a generous per-device data allowance.

The shared bathrooms are the sticking point for me. I'll say straight up that I dislike shared facilities, but I'm trying to be balanced in my review. The bathrooms took me back in a flash to youth-hostel days as a teenager. They're simple, a little worn (but clean), cold and echoey. Even with the hotel full, it was rare to cross paths with anyone, so that was a bonus. The showerheads are a bit low for anyone over 175cm tall, and the warm water pressure is average at best, especially if both showers in that bathroom are in use.

Being an old hotel-pub, the rooms are the old accommodation, with fantastic solid brick walls, so noise doesn't travel much through them. Alas, the doors and windows are pretty thin, and as most doors have two locks/latches, there is a very frequent slamming of doors (surely the owners could just put in some better locks... and get rid of the risk of people locking themselves out of their rooms, given the frequent trips to the showers/toilets!). If you want a quiet room I think you need to be far down the hallways.

The lounge and balcony are great spaces, but it is a pity that the average music level was fairly high every afternoon/evening I was there. I'm sure you can ask them to turn it down, but first impressions count, and the basic feeling for me was that it was an unwelcoming space if you wanted to read or sit daydreaming over a beer. A pity. Also a pity that the one coffee I ordered was poor, but I don't know if that's typical.

The price:quality relationship is good for Hobart, and many people would enjoy staying there.

You can't do much better than this in the centre of town as long as you don't mind shared facilities - which were beautifully clean and not a problem at all.
Fantastically helpful staff who were always on hand to give advice and serve drinks in the really excellent , slightly eccentric bar. Great balcony outside the bar.

Would recommend this highly - if you're looking for a ultra clean, nice, friendly budget hotel

If you are looking for a unique, fun and affordable stay - this place is perfect. Reviewers are not exaggerating - one of the coolest places I've stayed at!

Perfect location. Walking distance to Salamanca market, farmer's market, ferry to Mona, cafes/restaurants/bars and any other great things you'll be doing in Hobart.

This is a b&b with shared bathrooms - but spotless, bathrooms are not crowded and you'll have eveything you need (towel, soap, hair dryer - just ask).

Top customer service. Wayne at the reception made our trip so much better by giving us tips on what to do, including local events that you won't find on trip advisor :). Thank you for making our trip memorable!

Hi CTRocks! Sorry for the delayed response (we're not on TripAdvisor on the reg!) but it looks like past guests have all hit the nail on the head. Our bedrooms are all private but none have ensuites—we have two bathrooms on each of our two floors. Booking directly through our website is best! You're always welcome to email us with any queries, too. See you in March?
