The Alabama is a small art-filled hotel offering boutique budget rooms in the heart of Hobart. Please note that all rooms have shared bathrooms, there are no rooms with a private or en suite bathroom. If this is not your style, we understand, but please be aware of this before staying and / or reviewing. Each room has a small fridge, a heater, hanging space for your clothes and a fan for warmer weather. Hobart is rarely hot, air-conditioning is not needed here. Even on that rare hot day, the city cools down at night and the windows open to let in a breeze. It is perfectly safe to have a window open at night while you sleep. Tea and coffee is available to purchase from reception, which is open from 8am - 9pm daily. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms. Our inner city location means we do not have off street parking. Unless you're planning a longer trip through Tasmania we wouldn't recommend hiring a car for your stay at the Alabama as inner city parking costs do add up.

This hotel is one of my fave that I have ever stayed in. Situated in Hobart’s CBD it is an easy walk or bus to any of the major shopping centers. The Uber drivers could also pick us up easy when needed.
The hotel is truely retro and a happy mix between back packers and pub style hotel.
The bathroom and shower is shared both very clean and great shower head.
The rooms are clean and tidy with a heater if needed. Fridge and closet. Funky pillows and prints.
There is no TV perfect to disconnect
WiFi, a retro bar and record player and great coffee. You must have a cocktail on the balcony and watch the city go by.
We met 2 house doggos that had popped in and all the staff were wonderful. They gave us some great local tips for the day.
It’s the perfect start or base or end to your Tasmanian Adventure.
You will definitely see us back.

My partner and I had the absolute pleasure of staying at the Alabama Hotel over the long weekend. Our room was exactly as described online, perfect for couples. It was clean, comfortable and had a lovely window above the bed that offered the perfect afternoon breeze.
The guest lounge area was dreamy. It was welcoming, warm, and offered wonderful sunlight and soft music.
The staff at the hotel were wonderful, friendly and always up for a chat. To top it off I got to try one of the staff's homemade honey with my chai (best ever) & got visited by two lovely fluffy dogs.
We will absolutely be returning, already planning a trip back at the hotel in June.
10/10 - Thanks so much Alabama Hotel.

There is so much to recommend this place. It has a doggy on most Wednesdays! The bar has a quality selection of wine and beers, including an amazing selection of gluten free beers that were a revelation to me and a well appointed lounge and balcony to enjoy them in. It has a doggy! It is really conveniently located in Central Hobart so plenty of options to dine out and a taxi rank and supermarket a very short walk away. It has a doggy! The staff were lovely from checking in to check out. It has a doggy! The malamute in question was a very good girl. She was friendly and the banter was incredible. It is LGBTQ friendly.

The decor, the facilities and the staff were all so much fun. We only had one night, but the interactions with staff and other guests was what made it so special. Glad we got to meet Nala and Pula?? the malamutes. Such a comfortable place to be while travelling.

I have stayed in lots of budget hotels/hostels over the years and when planning a trip to Hobart, looked into the YHA and the Alabama. I chose the Alabama primarily because of the reviews, the photos and the funky vibe. The location was excellent, however I was pretty disappointed upon arrival! The staff were not friendly, the room was smelly and didn’t feel clean. I dropped my phone behind the bed, which was right by the window and the amount of dust behind it was gross! It was clear that it had never been cleaned before. The bed was very easy to move so no excuse. I asked the staff at reception to get this cleaned up, which they did. Cleaners need to really up their game. The bathroom ran out of tissues/paper towels Saturday evening. Having read the other reviews I really don’t know why my experience was so different - I don’t have hugely high standards, but I expect a room to be clean and staff to be friendly as a minimum! I wouldn’t stay here again and I wouldn’t recommend it to others.

Super clean and large rooms. Shared bathroom is also very clean. Complimentary soap that was Devine and free water.
The lady that was at the front desk was super friendly and very helpful.

PROS: Comfy bed. Cute decor with lots of character. Great location.
CONS: an unfriendly and ready to do the bare minimum staff member who was too busy chatting to their mates to be present when providing service. They were distracted and clearly just wanted to get back to their chat with friends at the reception bar. You felt as if you were disrupting them. Gave contradictory information.

We couldn't recommend Alabama Hotel enough. Great atmosphere, super friendly hosts, stylish retro decor, super clean and FUN! Stay, enjoy and make sure you have a pre-drink in the bar or on the terrace. Alabama is located right in the city so close to a host of wonderful cafes and restaurants.

I stayed in this hotel for three nights. The room was simple, but clean and even had a fridge to keep your own drinks cold. One minor disadvantage was the fact, that there were shared bathrooms only, but I knew this in advance. There was also a laundry, which you could use for a few dollars. The hotel is centrally located next to Elisabeth Mall. Staff was easygoing and polite. I would return.

Amazing little place … room was clean and well presented and spacious. Bathrooms also nice and clean and light and bright. The service was exceptional; Molly and Em were both super friendly, honest, enthusiastic, helpful. The bar/living room area and balcony were homely and chilled and fun. Would definitely stay again.

Hi CTRocks! Sorry for the delayed response (we're not on TripAdvisor on the reg!) but it looks like past guests have all hit the nail on the head. Our bedrooms are all private but none have ensuites—we have two bathrooms on each of our two floors. Booking directly through our website is best! You're always welcome to email us with any queries, too. See you in March?
Hi Monica,
I'm probably a bit late to answer this question for you, but for anyone else wondering about hairdryers - yes we have them! Just ask at reception.
Happy travels!
Kelly
