Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The hostel’s reception was very good and nice and gave lot of tips what to do in Hobart and how to get places. But it wasn’t clean hostel. There were spiders and others in the walls and ceiling. Also toilets were mess up. There wasn’t air condition so it was so hot there.

Response from Hobart Central YHA Team, Guest Services / Front Office at Yha Hobart Central
Responded 14 Sept 2023
Hi Annina, Thank you for reviewing your stay at Hobart Central YHA. We are glad that our knowledgeable reception team were able to recommend lots of things for you to do in Hobart. Our team work hard to maintain a high level of cleanliness in the property. Our shared rooms and facilities are cleaned daily, however we will investigate this, to ensure there are no spiderwebs in any high and hard to reach areas. Hobart has a very cool climate, so you are right, we do not have air conditioning. Of course in summer we can get some warmer days, and we do have pedestal fans available on request. Our reception team are happy to assist with any requests such as these, if they are made aware at the time. Thanks again for your review and we hope to see you again. Safe travels, Hobart Central YHA team

I would not recommend to stay at YHA Hobart Central. I have stayed with the YHA for the past 13 years and all around the world, and never have I been treated so attrociously! In December 2022 I booked a private room with an ensuite, to then stay in March 2023. I had confirmed my booking, paid my booking, and on departure from Melbourne to Hobart my plane was delayed. I rang the hostel to let them know I was still coming but there will be a delay in my flight. I was told no worries, you will receive a text message with your room number and pin number, in which I didn't receive. I rang back just before the plane took off, and the receptionist gave me the room number and pin number. On arrival to the property it was late, I headed up to my room, put the pin number in and entered the room. As I walked in I was greeted by a male and his partner! We were all in shock! I had been able to enter their room. I rang the after hours reception number in which I was greeted by a very rude receptionist, who continued to say that the hostel was fully booked for that night! I said to her, "well sorry you need to sort something out, I have booked and paid for this room back in December, I have just been able to walk into someone else's room with the number I was given and now you are telling me the hostel is fully booked!" She continued to smack both fist down on the bench, using profusive language and telling me to get out." I am still in disbelief I walked in to a room that was given to me as mine, but I was greeted with another couple in it already! I WOULD NEVER EVER RECOMMEND TO STAY IN THIS HOSTEL!!!

Hobart YHA We stayed in a family room. The room was basic and that was fine for a night when all the other accommodation was triple their cost. The room was basic but clean with its own bathroom and heater and TV. The front desk staff were really friendly, and the bag storage was really helpful as we had an early check in. The location is great only a short walk to the harbour and city centre.

I stayed here for one-night before transferring on to a tour, so can only really judge the ease of check-in and room comfort. As I arrived late and the reception was closed, I pre-confirmed a mechanism for checking-in. As it happened, without an Australian SIM card, I had to log on to the hostel’s WiFi and call the number left on the door. This wasn’t a simple solution. I arrived in town after a warm day and tried to sleep in a room without a fan or a/c. This was a challenge, whilst it was also on a creaky, metal bunk. It’s therefore my conclusion that there must be more comfortable local, budget accommodation options for using whilst in town.

Hi there - we are sorry you had issues checking in late and we'll review our procedures for this so it is super clear. Tasmania is blessed with a really mild climate and only has a handful of nights a year that are warm enough to need AC. In keeping with trying to run sustainably, we have therefore not installed it in this YHA as it is generally not needed. You were obviously here one of those exemptions so we're sorry we failed to meet your expectations.

It has been some time since I have been to a YHA. At first, I was a little surprised at how much it cost. But the quality of accommodation is well worth it. Our room was lovely and clean, with fridge and coffee facilities (never got this at a YHA before). Staff were friendly and helpful, and did their best to suggest places we might like. We were close to the water and food / coffee / museums were just steps from our doorway. Well located and relatively quite quiet (apart from a cruise ship sounding its horn late at night and church bells every hour - but what can you expect). This was a great place to stay.

We had a great night sleep here. Very suitable for couples in the private rooms. Very soundproof as well, and toilet/showers were great. You can be on your own or around other travellers as you wish. All good dining places are only a short walk so perfect location. Off road paid parking, plenty of spots.

Perfectly located, short walk to Woolworths and Asian eateries, this friendly hostel has compact ensuite rooms though there's no detachable shower head. Bring your own shower gel and shampoo as there's just soap. Heating is adequate, plenty of towels and little treats like free pancakes on Friday mornings is fun. Only gripe is there's no lift so you need to lug luggage up two flights of stairs which actually means four as you turn up another short flight to reach first floor. Not recommended for seniors. Other than that, everything is convenient, drop off keys when you leave in a box provided so no worries if you're leaving early. Friendly and chatty staff and guests.
