We'd been wanting to stay at the Islington Hotel for many years having lived nearby for some time. For the price, I was expecting a more luxe experience - even though the room was freshly furnished, some of the fittings were looking tired in the Garden suite. The heavy curtain which is needed to block light for sleeping was tattered and was very difficult to use - and in fact did not close off the entire space (I was pleased to hear it will be replaced shortly, but that didn't help us). There were minimal supplies in the room - no coffee options in room, no mini bar (even though the booking said there was a free mini bar), no moisturiser or bath salts etc - things which we have come to expect from a room in this price bracket. Whilst the bed was comfy, it was very squishy on the left side to get in/out and around and there was a constant fan noise from the ensuite which annoyingly couldn't be turned off and a large gap under the door where light, food smells and a breeze made entry. The breakfast was decent, but our requested late checkout was ruined by the gardener's enthusiastic activities only a few feet away from the room, so we had to abort the idea! I'm glad we got the chance to stay, but happy not to return.

Whilst the beautifully, thoughtfully appointed rooms of this historical home are of a quality that deservedly earn the luxury boutique hotel moniker, guests are additionally surrounded by immaculate gardens and a view to Mt Wellington that makes your soul smile. In a great location to explore Hobart and surrounds, with secure off-street parking, the Islington is blessed with a staff whose commitment to a welcoming, warm, personalised service is beyond parallel. Every request was catered for in a way that exceeded expectations. Next visit, I will be bringing the whole family and hopefully we can stay a little longer. The Islington deserves to be shared with the people you love.

Booked Islington Hotel through Luxury Escapes for 2 nights 🌙 Nov 29th till Dec 1st. Fabulous stay with exceptional service, commencing with email contact from Hotel a few days prior to our arrival date. Email was confirming our arrival date & 2 night stay, also asking for our approximate arrival time, which was about midday. Not excepting our room to be ready, we arrived to drop bags & check in, intending to go into Hobart till we could access our room. Met by the manager, Mark, check in completed room was ready & coffee made for us whilst we filled in arrival details & bags delivered to our room. Mark then gave us a tour of this magnificent property on an Acre, beautiful gardens & whilst the property is 176 years old, it has been refurbished magnificently. Some rooms left to reflect the original time of the building. The refurbished accommodation rooms & dining room were a delight. Our room had immediate access to the gardens with a view to Mt. Wellington, spectacular to wake to that view & just enjoy it when in the room. We even had a pademelon visit in the garden outside our room. Breakfast was delicious, and as we had an early tour departure for Bruny Island, they opened early to accommodate us, what wonderful service. An absolute bonus were the delicious treats in our room made by the chef on site, a great little treat with a coffee after a full day. Also a cheese platter was delivered to our room, absolute bonus. Bed was comfortable & with the beautiful bird songs coming from the garden it was a very relaxing stay. We would highly recommend Islington Hotel, with an excellent location, quiet with great service.

Wellington Suite We travel to Hobart once a year and have stayed in most of the luxury hotels over period of 20years or more. We have stayed at the Islington previously, though some time ago, and enjoyed it very much. First, the good things: Very comfortable beds and beautiful gardens. Unfortunately, the above did not outweigh the negatives. Although the manager Marc, whom we saw once and one other staff member (of the four staff we encountered) were friendly and approachable, the other two staff members were indifferent and unwelcoming. After a three nights stay, we were still waiting for the requested conditioner. For some reason the bathroom floor was not heated as expected. The afternoon offering of squashed cake and flowers under cling wrap was less than appealing. Guests expected to use their own accounts to login to Netflix Stan etc . Only free to air tv provided. Neither the phone nor iPad were charged. There are no staff after a certain hour and as the phone /ipad didn’t work, we would have been hard pressed to contact any. I had asked for lactose free milk - none provided in the room. There is no shaving /make-up mirror in the bathroom. Most concerning was the bathroom safety .Both the toilet and shower doors open into the shower recess /toilet causing a serious safety issue should the door become blocked on the inside. After a three night stay, we were not farewelled by any staff member, which by this time, was an unsurprising end to a very lacklustre stay. There are so many other places in Hobart where fine Tasmanian hospitality is provided.

My partner had arranged a birthday surprise for me with a stay at The Islington, a place I had eagerly anticipated due to its reputation for a relaxing environment and top-tier service. However, our initial encounter left much to be desired. When we buzzed the front gate intercom, we were met with an ungracious "who are you" from the speaker – not the warm welcome we expected. Inside, we were confronted by the same discourteous individual who promptly requested our license and credit card information. For an establishment boasting a 5-star status, this was far from our expectations, making us feel uneasy and questioning our choice. The situation continued to disappoint when the same staff member gave us a brief tour before directing us to our room. Upon entering, we found a cheese platter wrapped in cling wrap and laminated signage marred by unsightly marks. At this point, my partner's frustration had reached its peak. He had paid well over a thousand dollars for our stay, and he believed that any other hotel in Hobart would have provided superior service at a lower cost. In an attempt to address our grievances, my partner sought out the same staff member but found him absent. Resorting to a phone call, he expressed his disappointment, but instead of an apology, he received a response that left much to be desired – an offer to leave, with the stipulation of contacting Luxury Escapes for a potential refund. The entire experience left us disillusioned and questioning the 5-star rating. Three stars at best, especially given the quality of service provided. While the grounds were indeed pleasant, the interior furnishings clashed with the building's heritage, giving the impression of hurried assembly from an IKEA catalog. In summary, I would caution anyone considering a stay here to think twice before investing their money in an experience that falls far short of the advertised luxury and service quality.

Used the Discover Australia company based in W.A. I have been before independently but decided to let someone drive. The trip included airfares and transfers to and from hotels and airports. Just had to sit back and be driven everywhere. My friend and are in our 80’s and managed most of the walking. On one excursion we were only. 5 senior people and the tour guide adapted the walking area to our ability. We had a different driver/ tour guide on each trip and at the most 15 people - not always the same people.

We arrived for our 2 night stay, greeted warmly by Claire. She showed us the hotel facilities, including sumptuous rooms set aside for reading, relaxing and gazing at the eclectic art.
Our room overlooked the snow dusted Mt Wellington and the gardens of the hotel. The room was large, plenty of comfy seating and a huge, king sized bed. The bathroom was large with a delightful free standing bath, gorgeous rain shower and heated flooring. Quality linen and toiletries were available.
The complimentary tea and coffee, whenever we wanted it was really appreciated. Pastries and delicious treats were delivered to our room after venturing out for the day. Breakfast (included in the cost) was delicious, and eaten in the glass conservatory / dining room, next to the roaring open fire. We ate dinner only once in the hotel and it was absolutely faultless. My husband stated his lamb was the best he had ever eaten. My confit duck was perfect.
But the best thing about The Islington was the staff. We were so impressed with Claire, Gabby and Jacob who delighted us with their exceptional customer service. The hotel was quiet, the bed was so comfortable and the overall experience far exceeded my expectations.
We have vowed to return every year from now on. The best hotel experience for many years and worth every cent.

Disappointing at over $700 per night. This hotel has wonderful reviews and although the Manager and some staff were very welcoming there were a number of very disappointing aspects which would preclude my recommending a stay here. I booked through a third party but did also call the hotel before booking to check the room. Do not book room 1. They advised it was of a similar standard and size to all their top rooms and also came with a private courtyard. They didn't mention that this opened to the back door to the restaurant kitchen area whose door was also often left open. The windows also opened to this area with the walking path the other side so it really wasn't quiet or private to have them open. There was no other natural light or air in the room. We booked dinner on one night which was a mix up from start to finish. The meal I chose was not as described on the menu and it eventuated that the wrong menu had been printed and there hadn't been a discussion with the chef before presenting (I did question when it arrived and was advised it was correct). We sought to order a bottle of Tasmanian wine but the only one of our choice had already been opened (the waitress didn't know how long earlier) so we chose another wine which was on the menu by the glass and asked for a bottle but was told that wasn't possible. (We did then ordered it by the glass) I should add there was a reduction on our dinner bill in recognition of these issues. We were the only people having dinner there so service should have been better (and I would have expected the chef to come and speak to us personally about the menu mix-up). The main disappointment was the room and I felt it should have been explained that the room had no outlook at all and opened to the restaurant kitchen area where the door was open when that was in use (ie breakfast/mornings and early evenings). It's also quite a walk to the main city and docks area. We could have stayed a lot closer to the docks and had a view of the water at a more reasonable cost. On a positive note the hotel was happy for us to leave our bags on our last day and come back to use the sitting area before an evening flight.

On our travels we have stayed at properties claiming to be 'boutique hotels' but mostly they were far from the mark. For our trip to Hobart we booked a four night stay at the Islington Hotel and were not disappointed; the 'boutique hotel' label is defined by hotels like the Islington. On arrival we were greeted by Claire and provided a personalised check in experience, our garden suite looking out to Mt Wellington was a generously sized room, well suited for the duration of our stay. We must commend Claire, Gabriela and Maria on the warm, personal service we received, and being personally greeted each morning was truly appreciated. The hotel is a few minutes drive from the CBD but in the southern end of Davey Street which is much quieter, and traffic noise never intruded on our stay. Breakfast each morning came with our room, and the conservatory looks out onto Mt Wellington, a great view to start the day with exceptionally good breakfast fare. Highly recommended, we will most certainly return on our next trip to Hobart.

The good things about the Islington Hotel were the following:
The staff were very nice The building is very pretty and so is the dining room. The coffee is sensational and they are happy to make you a cup of coffee whenever you ask for one. Dinner was tasty and well presented.
What I was disappointed with was my garden view room. You can’t really leave the curtains open and gaze at the garden because the garden is not private. When we arrived there was a couple sitting at a table outside our room having a drink at a table. The net curtain was not big enough to adequately cover the window, so for privacy you had to close the other curtain as well. I love to leave my curtains open at night wherever I sleep so this was disappointing and you can’t leave a window open as there isn’t one.

Dear Karen Thank you for your review of Islington Hotel. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the staff and food and beverage at the hotel. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the Garden Suite. We are in the process of selecting new curtains to be installed in the Garden Suites as we recognise that they need improving. I can recommend our Wellington Suites which are upstairs if you are wanting to leave your curtains open at night as it has more privacy. Again, Thank you for your review.
