Detailed Reviews
I have visited this pub everytime I've visited Tasmania. The bar staff are friendly and happy to answer any questions about their great range of beers. If your lucky enough to be there when the the group of locals pump out some Irish music then your in for a treat. I haven't eaten here but the food always looks good and substantial. Always good to have a beer in a pub with some character. Great place for a beer if your visiting Hobart for sure.

What a fabulous bar. I walked in and thought oh no this isn’t for me. But I sat at the bar chatted with the lovely bar staff and didn’t look back. A shoe shine guy came in the bar. The bar got busy and the atmosphere took off. Loved every minute of it. Best of all were their own espresso Martinis, yummy. Best I’ve ever tasted.

We came across this hotel by accident and had the best time in years. As soon as we entered the pub we encountered a large group of Irish musicians with various instruments. The music was fantastic and only got better as the afternoon wore on !!
We ended up staying for dinner and the food was superb.
The pub decor is certainly older style .... but if you are lucky enough to encounter these musicians during one of their sessions then you will have struck the jackpot !

An old style pub. Quaint with no TVs or pokies. There's a reasonable sized outdoor seating area, with covered smoking area and uncovered courtyard.
A bit concerning on cleanliness, given the large number of small flies around the bar area.
They had a reasonably good whisky selection, but unfortunately no menu (electronic or otherwise) and the staff member wasn't very knowledgeable to assist in selecting. At $12.50 for a pint of a pretty standard pale ale it’s on the pricier end.

We add New Sydney Hotel to our agenda every time we visit Hobart. Each time we have a wonderful Saturday afternoon by the fire listening to the Irish music session. And the food and Guinness is superb!

Small, quirky, open fire, great staff, good range of gin. What else do you need.
Special call out to the South African bar person - so personable and genuine. Excellent service.
Think would get very packed very quickly - but that would be part of the experience.

The best little pub as it's the only place still open. Would highly recommend. Music atmosphere and good beers.. shame there is no late night food available. Come and have a good night..Hobart is dead except for the New Sydney Hotel. Besit little pub in town

A warm voice answered the phone when I rang a week in advance to book my room at the new sydney. No credit card details or contact number needed, I was pleasantly suprised but also a bit anxious. We arrived late on the evening of check in and were greeted by a very friendly young man and given our room keys immediately and charged 40dollars for the room. To be honest I was expecting a bit of a flea pit for this price as in comparison all the other hostels and b&b's were $60 plus. To my joy we had a small double room with a soft and clean bed, clean sheets, clean floor, clean sink, a telly and wait for it.... soft fluffly towels. Communal showers as standard, but they were immaculately clean and well kept (and had hot water)
After staying in many hostels before finding our flat on arrival to Sydney there is no comparison to the quality and value of the new sydney. By the way the food is huge, fresh and very tasty and the live music made it very hard for us to leave.

Real open fire. A pub with personality. Great selection of beers. A big band of men and women play Irish folk music on the weekends, giving you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, especially if you are of Irish heritage. They do take up a considerable amount of space, though. Not only is the pub great but the quality of the food is tops also. They actually know what wagyu marble scoring is and it is the real deal deal. So whoever is the cook there, they know what they are doing. I would suggest they halve the thickness and just sear it. The wagyu also comes with a big slab of sizzling hot rock salt, the perfect condiment. No sauce is required with this deliciously rich meat. If I lived in Hobart, I could see myself having an account here.

Called in for dinner and the food was great. Good hearty pub meals with a twist. Try the wallaby dippers and thinly sliced wagyu also had the Tasmanian Octopus and Crispy lamb shoulder just yum!
Good selection of beers on tap and on a cold Hobart night the open fire place is the winner.
