Sunshine Coast, Australia

We're a late 50's Sunshine Coast QLD couple who decided to take a 6 day/5 night getaway trip to Hobart using a Luxury Escapes package.

The cost of our room was $99/night and represented terrific value. The package included a bottle of very decent wine, cheese platter and $10 per day (non-cumulative) discount on food.

The hotel was a little further out of town than we'd thought but if you wanted to walk into the Hobart CBD and Constitution Dock area it only took about 30 mins straight down Argyle Street. Regardless, it cost very little to get anywhere by taxi, was an easy walk to some good restaurants and bars along Elizabeth Street and close to where we collected our rental car (Warwick Street).

The main hotel building was grand with decent if somewhat austere bar and dining rooms. There were no issues at check in and the staff were friendly. The room was ready for us and near to room parking was plentiful. Our room was on the lower level which means we didn't have to drag heavy bags up stairs.

Our room (2 rooms actually) was very large with a separate lounge area and a very nicely refurbished bathroom (black and white theme). The bed was a king size and very comfortable. The only thing we'd say about the room was perhaps a couple more pieces of art over the bed to make it less stark. We had a view of the cricket field next door, looked down towards Hobart CBD and could look back up to Mount Wellington. When it got cooler we found the heating system very effective.

We had the continental breakfast offered by the hotel on our first morning and can recommend it highly. The gentleman serving breakfast was friendly and accommodating.

The bar staff in the evenings were also very good to us.

On leaving, the only issue of concern was another guest called whilst I was checking out; she was wanting to order breakfast. I'd rather she was advised she'd be called back shortly and I be attended to. The desk operator apologised and promptly finalised check out. This very minor inconvenience wasn't enough to upset the very enjoyable 5 days or so we spent there.

Now we know Hobart a little better, we'd certainly stay here again and can recommend the hotel to others. We've rated this hotel 4 stars when compared to 5 star CBD hotels but, from a value perspective on this occasion, we'd rate it better than 4 stars.

The building itself is great not just your bog standard hotel bulding. We stayed in an antique suite which was huge but would stay in a King Bed suite if stayed again. However, we were staying in peak week so when booked was not much left. It was the yacht race and new years week so it was not cheap either. We paid $1200 or there abouts for 4 nights. Ordinarily I am sure it would be a lot less but this time of year accommodation in demand fair enough other places were charging far more. The rate did also include a full breakfast everyday and that was ala carte to the table as well as a cold buffet. The breakfast was excellent though the coffee was a machine if you are a coffee snob. The restaurant was closed the time we were there but we had been made aware prior to arrival. The bar was open if you asked it was being run by reception staff but again time of year you would expect that they would operate on minimal staffing. The hotel is about 2kms into the main nightlife but there are restaurants, cinema etc 10mins walk in North Hobart. An uber was under 10 dollars too. The only thing is there was no aircon in the rooms which was fine for us but again may not suit all. Also our room was dark and the curtains hard to open but the decor did fit with the antique feel. The towel quality for the bathrooms were not great but adequate. If I had paid less money I would rate this hotel as good. That is not to say I would not stay again the staff were all fantastic and thats worth its weight in gold. Another time of year would be good value.

In many ways the Rydges North Hobart reminded us of an upmarket, boutique country hotel, complete with decorative high ceilings and creaky floorboards. The staff were friendly and helpful. The a la carte breakfast was reasonably priced and offered a good variety of choices. The manor suite was huge, offering a four poster double bed, antique furniture and large windows affording sweeping views of Hobart, the Derwent and surrounding district. The bathroom contained a free standing bath tub and separate shower.
As a black GHA Discovery member I was given a double room upgrade and welcome drink voucher. Unfortunately, there was no local experience or local amenity on offer. If you don't need to be in the centre of Hobart, this is a pretty good option.

I had second thoughts about staying at this hotel due to lower rating than expected rating for a well known hotel brand. However, my experience turned out to be beyond expectations, and this hotel came out tops! To start with, I got a room with no views whatsoever due to huge trees out the window blocking whatever Hobart had to offer. Next morning I requested for a room change and the receptionist Pema obliged and transferred to a different room that had a breathtaking view of the bay area overlooking Hobart Oval next door. To add to this, Princess cruise ship was docked in the bay. The stay was made all the more pleasant with the amazing breakfast service the hotel had to offer. The scrambled eggs is the best I have ever had in my life and Eggs Florentine became my new breakfast favorite. Stephen who attended to us during our breakfast service went out of the way to make it a good experience especially giving out chocolates to kids and taking time to explain each menu item. I have to add that Parking is free which is a big plus. This is a quiet nice place to stay if you are in Hobart, this hotel made all the difference to my stay and visit!

I haven't left a review for hotels in a while but felt compelled to leave one for Rydges Hobart. We booked on Luxury Escapes as we had a discount code and had been looking to visit Tasmania for a while. Our expectations were low due to the reviews but didn't mind as it was cheaper than anything else by miles.

Rydges exceeded our expectations and then some. Reception was efficient and friendly, and clearly explained the facilities and offers that came with our booking. The room was very nicely furnished and spectacularly large with a lounge area completely separate from the bedroom, which is unheard of for even a five star hotel unless you specifically book a suite. Service from reception to the rooms was quick.

We found the location adequate for our stay. Uber into town is about $10-$13, but there's a large popular eat street within a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Many restaurants also offered delivery when we couldn't be bothered heading out.

This hotel will definitely be our top pick should we visit Hobart again, but we're likely to bring a car with us next time due to how decentralised the sites around town can be. Good thing they offer free parking as well!

Stayed in the antique style bedroom. Room amentities were fine, plenty of dishes and cutlery. There was a kettle, toaster and dish washing liquid. But Hobart was extremely cold when I stayed for 3 nights mid June and the bedding was inappropriate with only a thin coverlet over a sheet. I had to ask for a blanket but a doona would have been preferred. The electric wall heater was extremely slow to heat up and insufficient. It took a good and full 2 whole days for the room to develop any warmth at all. My first night was actually quite miserable. Maybe if the staff had turned on the heater at morning room clean it may have been different but initially it was like walking into a fridge after check in at 6pm.
The ladies at the front desk were very lovely and accomodating.
My room was not cleaned or refreshed after the the second night, I think I had been forgotten about.
Check out at 11 was nice and relaxed.
Rydges is centrally located within Hobart and suited my business needs.

We found that the rooms in 59 became very hot although we kept the heaters at medium heat. We could not open the windows in the kitchen area nor the bathroom enough to let in a lot of fresh air. Please put more than one cake of soap in the bathroom when two people are staying in Room 59. I always have to ask at dinner where I can get some more soap. The girl serving us was very good and went off to get us extra soap.

Dear Brij035, Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback. I am really sorry that the heater in your room would not regulate the temperature. Maintenance has attended to this already and I apologie for the inconvenience caused. We hope to see you again soon and I have placed a note on your profile to add an additional soap for future stays.

Very friendly people running the show there, stayed in the heritage part of the place, just nice and clean with all the features of the good old time...appropriately renovated.
Services for rooms and pool area always in top of things, reception staff very helpful.
Only minus, in high season absolute overpriced as so many other services especially in Hobart, part of many tourist traps when traveling during public holidays.

Dear US2304, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. I was delighted to read your review and how our staff seemed to make a such a great impression. The prices are very dependent on the market just like airline flights. If there are events in Hobart and the hotels are getting full, the prices at all the major hotels will usually increase. This is also regulated by season so Hobart as a city does also have quiet periods however this does vary year to year depending on travelling demand and holiday changes. Rydges offers outstanding accommodation in our conveniently located Hobart hotel, just 2km from the Central Business District. Hobart is a city of fun, festivals and entertainment, from classical to contemporary, from pub bands to opera I look forward to welcoming you back to beautiful Hobart in the future. Had a 4 night Luxury Escapes package which included a bottle of wine and a cheese platter for an excellent price of $400. We received a very good greeting at reception from Eyes when checking in and then found our room (62) to be spacious, comfortable and very quiet. A very large bathroom with double sink, a great shower and very good towels and toiletries (which were replenished daily). The king bed was very comfortable and the room without using the provided heater was very warm. Other staff members , reception & cleaning were very friendly and did very good jobs. The hotel although out of the City and a car is really essential is easy to get to and has plenty of parking. We had a good view from our room overlooking Hobart and the North Hobart football oval. All in all the stay was very good.

Answer from Brett Taylor
Perth, Australia1 contribution
Hi JanisBrisbane. The hotel has a restaurant and bar onsite called 1898 Bar & Dining and there is also an wide range of restaurants close by in North Hobart which is a 5-10 minute walk. You can continue to walk into the CBD which is a further 10-15 minutes and you will be spoilt by choice along the way. Salamanca Place is also worth checking out. I hope that helps.

Answer from nicholas p

Hi most hotels will take a bond if you are paying cash! or a $1 amount held on your card so if any incidentals are made the hotel can charge using the $1 pre auth. If you had not paid your cards will be charged for the nights when you arrive and any other charges when you check out.

My room had a balcony but was quite close to next room's window so smoke would probably go in there. I wouldn't be happy with that.
