Keep in mind Hobart is a very hilly city and there's lots of streets with very steep hills .... if you want to walk make sure your accommodation is on the flat ... the city has lots of restaurants near the city but Elizabeth Street has a great lots of restaurants in.a small area

This is the fellow who used to be at Salamanca. The souvlaki is soo good. The bread so soft, the meat is succulent and the sauces are so bitey. Yum yum yum. The best in Hobart. Corner of Bligh and Dampier streets Warrane. Worth crossing the bridge for yum yum yum.

Stayed at the Ibis styles hotel. It was our first visit to Hobart & we were really pleased with the location of the hotel. It was an easy walk to Salamanca markets & all the main Hobart attractions. Lovely staff & it was no problem to organise a late check out as we had an afternoon flight back to Sydney. We had breakfast twice in the dining room which was very enjoyable but unfortunately didn’t have dinner as we had made other plans. Lovely modern hotel our room had views to Mt Wellington. Will definitely return.

Tony and his wife, the owners, are wonderful people who are trying to make this hostel work. It's an old property, and no amount of patching and love can bring it up to modern standard. This is a low-budget place for low-budget travelers ... safe, clean, friendly, but not appealing or up-to-date. It is a 10-minute walk to downtown, 15 to the harbour. Fortunately, the nearest SkyBus stop is just a few of blocks away, well within reach while carrying your gear. The halls and common areas are covered in indoor-outdoor carpeting, the paint is peeling, the kitchen is small and dark. But the showers have plenty of hot water, the beds are clean, the linens fresh. Yes the towels are small, the bathrooms dark and poorly equipped, the staircase is steep and creaky, the common room table-tops are covered in plastic (like Saran-wrap, but industrial grade). But it is a friendly place. When we first arrived, we were dismayed at the decrepit building, and were convinced we'd made a mistake. But Tony and his wife went out of the way to make us feel at home -- so we feel conflicted -- it's hard to recommend this place, but at the same time, it provides safe and clean low-end accommodation, with lots of personal touches. So I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. We probably would not stay there again - but we also found it to be perfectly adequate as long as we kept our expectations in check. There was a school group on a holiday from Melbourne - and it was just right for those kids and their teachers and chaperones. And probably not bad for twenty-somethings looking for cheap lodging. Not so good for retirees traveling the world. And then there was a little issue with electrical - they had an electric heater plugged into a power strip -- something the Australian fire authorities were posting as a bad practice on posters in town. One other positive thing: right next door is an organic / cooperative grocery store with all kinds of high-quality food and some good produce. We particularly liked their granola and muesli.

I stayed here in September and found the staff to be very helpful, the location was 3 minute walk to the hire car and this awesome Vegan Pizza and Pasta place. Very clean and very affordable and a nice quiet location but close enough to the museums and shops to explore. Don't miss the Botanic Gardens either.

I stay at Hobart Hostel any time I'm in town and feel like I'm in the spare room at a relative's home; civilised, friendly & hospitable. All budgets & travel types are covered, from dorm rooms to private ensuite rooms. You can cook up a storm in the fully equipped stainless kitchen with organic groceries from right next door. Free tea & coffee. Big fridges for self catering. You're within a comfortable walk of all the big attractions; Salamanca (catch the cat to MONA), CBD, the North Hobart restaurant strip and even Cascade Brewery if you're thirsty! As with any hospitality venture, the people are what make the difference. Tony & his team are genuinely committed to making your stay in Hobart one to remember from good, honest local advice to arranging transport or tours. Clean. Friendly. Hospitable. Affordable. Five Stars from me, thanks Tony!

We had booked a private room in this hostel for a week during our stay in Hobart, however after one night could not stay any longer. This was because the room was so so cold, with one tiny heater which did basically nothing to service it. My partner has asthma, and last time we stayed in a cold room he had to go to the hospital. Other small things such as the shower of the room would flood the entire bathroom, rendering the bathroom completely unusable for a good 2 hours later, also made our stay unsavoury. Given my partner’s health, we went and spoke to the staff of the hostel, airing our concerns and were promised a refund for the rest of our stay. We left happy with the customer service. The next day when the hostel manager called us to organise the refund we were met with such an incredible hostility that I can only describe it as a complete negligence for the customer service model. I was yelled at on the phone, called a liar, and my experience in his room was rendered completely invalid and I was made to feel like utter trash by the manager. Following being abused on the phone for simply requesting the refund I was promised, he said that his staff never promised a refund and it couldn’t be organised. This was a blatant lie and I am appalled by the lack of accountability, responsibility and honesty that the proprietor of this establishment runs his business with. I would NEVER recommend anyone stay in this hotel and continue to fund such a horrible and dishonest business practice.

Stayed 5 nights in a queen room private with ensuite. It was on the first floor tony the owner was more than helpful in every way possible. Car was parked on street paid parking after 8am but if you pay attention to the signs you can score free parking. Room had queen bed tables big windows and great shower and toilet. Kitchen was always clean sofas and tables to watch tv or read a book. Coffee machine and free wifi. A short stroll to the shops and waterfront. Everything nice and clean extra towels were supplied upon asking, car parking was also worked out at no extra cost. Tony and all staff were lovely and helpful and everyone staying there was very friendly. Some rooms have shared amenities I have stayed in one of those rooms before and was very happy.
