We stayed here twice during our visit to Kangaroo Island. We picked the guest house because of its location being near enough to the ferry port in Penneshaw to get between the two easily when we arrived and left but more central then Penneshsw itself.

We were not disappointed. Bruno Suzi and the two dogs made us feel extremely welcome. We had a lovely chat to both of them and even bought a bottle of wine to share with them from their favourite vineyard.

We had an idea what we wanted to do on the island but had only booked one activity.

Suzi suggested a route around the island we could take based upon where we had booked to stay and the one activity we had booked. This turned out to be amazing with great food, wine and animal encounters. Something we will remember forever.

The kitchen is the best equipped we have ever seen. Bruno and Suzi love talking to their guests and have a wealth of knowledge about the island that any visitor should take advantage of. They bend over backwards to ensure their guests have a wonderful stay with them and on the island.

We would definitely stay with them again.

Stayed over the October long weekend in Rori's retreat. Hosts Susi & Bruno were great. Unit has everything one could need. Fully self contained with facilities to cook if you wish. Comfortable bed, hot shower and air-con to keep you cool or warm as need be. Recommend for singles or couples. Close to everything in Kingscote

We absolutely loved this place! We only stayed the one night while headed to the Kingscote show but would stay again for sure. Bruno and Susi were very friendly and Bruno and I had a great chat about current events on the island. Highly reccomend!

We stayed with Susi and Bruno for three nights whilst exploring KI staying in Rori’s Retreat which has its own kitchen and bathroom. Susi was great in helping us plan our trip pre-arrival with lots of insider tips and suggestions. Our accommodation was bright and clean with a super comfy bed and all we needed to cook a simple meal. Great restaurant suggestions locally and always friendly and cheerful. The herb garden provided extra flavour for a breakfast omelette and the communal outdoor covered lounge area was a super place to enjoy a glass of wine and a snack. Thoroughly recommended!! Thank you Susi and Bruno xx

Thank you so much for your lovely review! We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us, and were able to take advantage of the herb garden and other facilities here. While we still have a couple of projects to go to complete the renovations of this property, we are very happy with how it is shaping up! The outdoor area is definitely my favourite place to enjoy a glass of wine :)

Rather backdated review however I wanted to leave feedback on the guesthouse.

I visited in January and had a very pleasant stay here. The house was very clean, double bedroom was all made up for me upon my arrival. The house has recently undergone a major refurbishment which is now very modern.

The Guesthouse was quiet during my stay however Susi and Bruno were never far away for a chat. They helped me plan my ittenary for my stay in Kangaroo Island.

I was made very welcome here and would return in future.

This was the nicest and most welcoming hostel we’ve ever visited -- it felt like we were welcomed into the home of friends. We were greeted kindly by Susie, Bruno helped us change a tire without us even asking, and throughout our stay here it felt very much like a big family home. Everything was clean, very organized, and they were very kind in helping us plan our few days on Kangaroo Island – you can tell they enjoy what they do. We couldn’t have been happier with our stay and only wish we had stayed longer.

My daughter and I booked a private room (queen + single beds) for $60 per night plus $5 per night for unlimited wifi. It was just up the road (100m) from the Sealink shuttle stop (The Gallery) and Budget sent a minibus for us to pick up our car at the airport and then picked up the car from the Backpackers once we were done. The grocery store and cafes were within close walking distance as well as the pelican feeding at 5pm each night.

The owner (Bob) was incredibly friendly and personable and brought us freshly laid eggs from his chooks. He also allowed us to leave our suitcase in the laundry after we checked out at 10am in preparation for our shuttle pickup at 5.30pm.

The accommodation was clean and well appointed with all kitchen items supplied (even tea/coffee) and even on a busy Saturday night with lots of people cooking, it felt homey and happy. All linens were supplied as well as a towel each.

The warm fire was wonderful and our only concern was the smoke alarms being set off three times in the night due to some other guests opening the enclosed log fire too much!

Overall, we had a wonderful long winter weekend and would recommend to other families.

This is a very tired and dated place, reminded me of somebody's holiday home where they leave all their second-rate stuff - broken kettles, poor stove, bad couches, creaky beds, etc.

Small communal area with a small kitchen, tiny sink and four-burner electric hotplate with no labels. Walls are very thin so Room #1 hears a lot of the communal area noise, and Rooms further back hear the fans that go on in the bathroom when the lights are turned on.

It was quite hot while we were there, but there were no fans and little airflow through the rooms. I couldn't see a heater in the room either, which I would imagine one would need there in the winter. Our window didn't lock despite facing right onto the street.

We booked online and the price was $60USD, but despite the Australian Dollar being stronger, it was still demanded of us that we pay the difference to make up $60AUD when we arrived. The first notice was a bill pushed under our door, and when we ran into the manager shortly thereafter, he asked repeatedly when we would give him $17.

There is no reception, just pick up the phone and the manager will come and meet you.

I'm not sure how many other budget accommodation options there are in KI, which may account for the popularity of this place despite its tired attitude to management.

Pros:
Good water pressure in the showers
Good location - close to town and Kingscote is closer to more attractions than Penneshaw or American River
Didn't feel too crowded even though they were fully booked
Bed was comfortable
The place was clean

Thank you for your review. We are a small family run hostel, and we try our best to provide a warm and comfortable welcome to all of our guests. I would like to respond to some points you have made. As you stated we provide budget accommodation which is clean and comfortable and we are in a great location for the island. All of our facilities are in good working order, we have fans available on request for all rooms, and a wood fire which heats the whole building in the winter. As we are in Australia, our bookings are always in Australian dollars, and the price for the room that you booked was $AUD60. We are always happy to receive feedback from our guests and will take your constructive comments on board. Best regards Bob Blucher.

Susi and Bruno are lovely hosts, always ready for a chat and with lots of great tips on KI. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcome and offered us plenty of food and drinks during our stay. The room was cozy, spacious and fresh to sleep in. The shared bathrooms were always clean and I never had to wait even once to use the shower or the toilet. There is plenty of space in the fully equipped kitchen, with reserved personal space to store your own food and drinks. BBQ is available in the backyard with plenty of additional sitting space. The dogs are lovely and a pleasure to have around, and the interaction with other guests has been a great addition to our short 3 days stay. I will surely recommend this place to anyone visiting KI, it has been a real pleasure!

Before a recent ownership change, this was a backpackers hostel.Apart from a new kitchen, nothing has changed. Not being spoilt for choice this time of the year,we stayed in the bunk room the first night. We shared with three others who were funny and interesting. The place is run by a husband and wife who stay on the property in a small cabin in the back yard.He tried his best to be helpful but she was rude, abrupt and curt.We chose to barbeque in the rear yard but was very difficult with their two dogs being there. At one stage the woman put her dogs away in their dog box cabin, then after opening the door herself, accused us of letting the dogs back out.The second night we paid for a "queen " room and my worker was offered a mattress on the floor. The husband slept on the lounge in the television area disallowing us from sitting inside or watching television.I have stayed in this place in it's previous form, often with many of my workers, many times and been very happy.Just because you put the price up and change the name,it does not neccesarily improve the experience.I feel sorry for the husband,he tried but the wife should consider a career change as she is not suited to customer service. As my title states,if this were the only option available,I would choose to sleep in my car.The Brownlow caravan park,(only five minutes away),is very welcoming with private cabins. This is where I will be staying in future. It is also similarly priced with ample space and a lovely undercover barbeque area. That woukd be my recommendation.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. While it is disappointing when a guest does not enjoy their stay with us, we are also aware that our style of accommodation is not for everyone. I acknowledge the fact that the main issue regarding your stay was that I wasn’t as hospitable as I could have been, and for this I apologise. I also acknowledge that our accommodation differed from your previous experience when it was run as a Backpackers, but we have had many happy customers and positive reviews, including guests who stayed with us at the same time you were here. Regarding your complaints that you needed to change rooms, and that your mate had to sleep on a mattress on the floor on the second night, it was explained when you called that the only way we could accommodate you for the two nights, during the busiest period on KI, was to put you in different rooms on each night. You were also informed that we would need to place a mattress on the floor on the second night, as that bedroom only had a queen bed, and you insisted that you were not going to share that with your mate. You were happy with this arrangement, when we discussed it over the phone prior to your arrival. We have two dogs and we advise guests to let us know if they are a bother, so that we can tie them up if need be. You told us they were not bothering you when we offered this to you. If the situation changed, it would have been better to raise this issue at the time, as there is nothing we can do about it after the fact, and it obviously encroached on your enjoyment of our property. We pride ourselves on ensuring all of our guests have a fabulous stay. We are disappointed that this wasn't your experience and that we didn't meet your expectations, which were based on previous visits with prior owners, when the place was a hub of all-night partying. While we have hosted a number of social events over the 14 months we have been here, we are also extremely mindful that this is not what many of guests are looking for. They are mostly travellers who are in need of a comfortable bed to get a good night’s sleep, to have the energy to explore this large island; a good quality, hot shower; a clean & spacious area to prepare food; fast WIFI that is included in the cost of the room; laundry facilities, and somewhere to relax. We provide all of this, and more.
