I stayed with a group so I did not have a choice of accommodation. I was surprised, however, at the large size of the facility. Unfortunately my room was like an old motel style, in a wing away from the main building. The room was very dated and basic, and most unfortunately retained the very unhygienic bed spread. The external veranda had not been swept in ages.
The group breakfast in the main restaurant was a basic buffet style, but our evening special dinner was good.
Given the remoteness of location I guess one should expect reduced standards, but a spruce up would be useful.

Being bored into rock the rooms are extremely quiet. Our room was a bit dated but clean enough. The wifi worked only in a straight line from the door and cut out once behind an internal wall where the bed was located.
We ate dinner in the on-site restaurant and while the steaks were very well cooked the service was average.

We booked an all package stay 6 months ago and the place was sold to a new owner about 3 months ago. The new owners have changed the hotel to accommodate bus tour groups only. We were not informed of this prior to our arrival and staff that checked us in were not fully aware of what was included in our package. We found out through many members of the local community. Unfortunately this is evident throughout the whole hotel. Kitchen staff and waiting staff were run off there feet and looked exhausted with not enough staff on for the number of patrons. Tables were not cleaned between patrons. Our room was not replenished or cleaned. There was trays of leftover food (not ours) left in the hall, down from our room for the whole three days we were there. We were given a limited menu - having to use the same menu the tour bus was given. They closed one of the restaurants and failed to inform us when we went to have dinner.

We booked this trip because we wanted to stay in an underground room. Given the local town has many other places with underground rooms I would suggest you try them first. Unfortunately I would not recommend a stay here.

The day trips were outsourced to another company which was originally run by the hotel - however, this was probably a good thing!

We loved our stay at the Desert Cave Hotel and would recommend checking it out.

This was the only indoor accomodation my partner and I stayed in on a recent two week camping road trip from Sydney to Uluru and back and we were keen to experience the novelty of the underground rooms.

Great location right in the centre of town, with only a short walk to IGA, BWS, servo, CP sign and restaurants. The bed was so comfy, linen fresh and clean and room free of dust and tidy. TV and fans were great, we made use of the bar fridge for our groceries and appreciated the complimentary coffee pods/coffee machine before checking out in the morning. There was also a kettle and WIFI which was great.

Bathroom was spacious, water pressure great and lovely hot water. Some complimentary soaps and lotions which was appreciated as we were travelling light on these.

The staff at reception upon checking in and out were lovely and so informative and helpful! Great service from a few different staff members and smily room service in the hallways. One gentleman was also able to assist us with making a dinner reservation at the hotel restaurant which we appreciated also.

The pizza restaurant opposite was super tasty and we enjoyed a BBQ chicken and their signature Coat of Arms pizza with some beers.

Would recommend.

Booked a room in this hotel for 4 nights, was travelling on a road trip with my husband. We weren't happy with the room we got for the money we paid. The room was more recently renovated by the looks of it and it was large. I didn't want an underground room but felt like we were in a dungeon. Entry was through a corridor and we felt stifled and the only window which opened was a panel below the larger windows and there was no air. We asked to be moved if possible and we were told we couldn't. The receptionist went to some effort (appeared to) and then couldn't find us another room. The next day we saw a different receptionist and asked if there was any availability and she looked and she found a room of lesser value. I wasn't phased about the outdated walls etc and bathroom and no discount was provided and that's okay because we asked to be moved. However, there were dead bugs on our window sill. There was also splashing of something on the tiles above the bathroom sink. The receptionist did make an effort. The cafe was okay but everyone working there appeared flustered. We ate breakfast twice there and it was reasonable. It was open from 7 to 2 and then reopens at 5. The 5 stars Umberto? I don't know who Umberto was or is, I'd take my name off that restaurant! Don't eat there. It wasn't pleasant. I had the braised pork ribs and my husband had soup. It took forever to come out and my husband's side of vegies, which he thought would be refreshing was just drowned in butter. I wish I'd stayed with my first choice of hotels. It was convenient for everything. Many of the staff were very nice to speak with.

Family road trip..
While visiting Coober Pedy the must do thing is stay in and underground dugout… we booked hoping for a great experience.
Being the most expensive place in the town we had high expectations..

Firstly booked a family room.. got given a standard room…
When we went to reception the solution was to send over a fold out bed.
Fold out bed was from the 1950s .. springs were buggered and the mattress sagged all over the place.

Secondly the shower..
The water service for a family room… actually dangerous…
Went from freezing cold to boiling hot without notice…

The facilities…
Well nothing..
the rooms are very very outdated.. clock radio still has IPhone 3 connection..
So guessing nothings been updated in 15 years.

Swimming pool part of the reason we booked the venue…
6 degrees.. so couldnt be used..

Wifi… none unless you want to stand in the car park..

Linen .. suspect to say the least… unsure who it’s cleaned didn’t appear to be international hotel standard.

In room tea coffee coffee powder was hard n horrible.. like it had been wet and dried.

Bathroom was very old and dated and DIRTY….

Even the car park was a shambles… park where and how ever you feel..

Will not return.

Strongly urge others to consider staying here.

After some research there seems to be a lot of other.. better looking probably more respectable places to stay in Coober pedy..

Not to mention the pricing…. $$$

Shame as the town and surrounds and the Breakaways are outstanding..

I was excited to stay here as a break from camping, but for the price we payed very disappointed with the stay.
Outdated, grubby and not well cleaned. Our room had not been vacuumed (or if it had incredibly poorly), the bathroom bin not changed and the bedding needs refreshing it is old and stained, definitely not good enough in Covid times!!!
For $480 for two nights, I feel the price was steep for the lack of quality.
I understand it’s the Outback but it looks like scheduled maintenance and cleaning is a low priority! Watching clean linen pulled out of the back of a filthy van tray is pretty disgraceful.

We were booked in at Desert Cave Hotel for one night in April while we were travelling in the area. We got flooded in at Mt Dare, with all roads in the area officially closed. We contacted Desert Cave to cancel our booking and we’re told that there would be no refund, despite the circumstances, because of their cancellation policy. We had no choice but to cancel the booking. Not only did they not offer a refund due to an act of God but our room was resold within minutes of the cancellation. We did get to Coober Pedy, behind schedule, but we stayed somewhere else.

Arrived to be greeted by a friendly, professional, obliging lady. Went to our room and were mind blown by them. We stayed in the tunnels. Extremely private and comfortable. We dined at Umbertos restaurant and were again wowed with the service, food and choices on the menu. Wonderful experience, a must for everyone’s bucket list!

Stayed for 3 nights, the carpet was dirty and unvaccumed. I went to make a coffee on the first night to find an open half used milk and only a couple of sachets of sugar.
In the 3 nights we stayed our room was never made up and condiments not replenished.
Our shower took approx 5 min for any hot water to come through and the pressure so low you had to spend twice as long as normal to wash yourself.
The toilet stunk and was very dated in general.

I am towing a trailer, is there secure parking?
Answer from aussietraveller59

I can't say I saw any trailers in the car park but I'm assuming you can park in there. I'd give them a ring to check. But I thought it was fairly secure but not locked or closed at night. Its better parking there than on a street anyway, there's really no where else to park because motel is in Main Street. You drive off the main road to the reception block then into the carpark and the buildings are at the end of that. We stayed a couple of nights and never had any trouble.
