The Playford - MGallery by Sofitel stands out for its luxurious amenities, which include well-furnished rooms, a heated pool, and a state-of-the-art gym, according to guests. Its central location near cultural hotspots and transit options is highly valued.
While reviews of the hotel's value for money and room quality show some divergence, the cleanliness of the establishment and its elegant, art deco-inspired atmosphere garner consistent praise. Guests have also called out the high level of service, though it may waver during peak times.

We had a flying visit to Adelaide for my husband's 50th birthday and chose the Playford as a bit of a treat for ourselves. It really was a step up from our regular hotels, and felt very luxurious to us. The bathroom was elegant and well stocked with everything we needed, and the soaps supplied smelled and felt great. The decor of the room felt classy and well designed to mix modern and art deco styles. The bed was very comfortable. We visited the pool area and enjoyed the spa and sauna. And last but definitely not least, the staff were all excellent - friendly and helpful.
The location was also perfect for us to explore the cultural precinct and attend a show at the Festival Theatre.

As Accor members we received an invitation to stay at the Playford in a premium room at a special price of $300 which included $100 Dining credit at the Luma. We had not returned to the Playford since Covid and knew that it had undertaken a luxury renovation. We were there on a Friday night and had booked dinner at the Luma : I was ambivalent since our earlier experience was lackluster. See my review of the Luma, but what a lovely surprise : It was a 5 star experience at dinner and breakfast.
Check in was smooth. The room : New York Style Loft room on the 7th floor was AMAZING. I suspect we were upgraded to the best which was 705 : a North Terrace facing loft room. The furnishings, the space and the luxurious amenities were world class. The windows are " double glazed " to keep the street noise to a minimum. The Bed and linen, the Bathroom the Mini Bar inclusions were exceptional.
Would encourage any one looking for a City break or visiting from interstate to consider The Playford. I have stayed at the Sofitel Adelaide and if I were to return would choose the Playford.
The Service and friendliness of the staff at Reception, Bar and the Luma was reminiscent of what one often gets in Asia but is rarely seen in Australia.
This I believe is often a sign of excellent leadership from the GM and the management team. Thank you

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
As we’d enjoyed last years trip, we leapt on a Luxury escape package to return.
We booked a Junior Suite again- this time room 331.
The layout was quite different than our previous stay, and not a user friendly for us with the bathroom coming off of the bedroom and with a much smaller bedroom area.
There was a lot of ‘wasted space’ in this configuration, a long corridor that took up space, it had the kitchen area in it but that’s all, as a consequence, the lounge was also quite compact. It wasn’t as hospitable and the lounge was uncomfortable (to narrow, uncomfortable cushions and seat, not big enough for two people), and due to the lack of space, the only other sitting option was two individual chairs, which we would have had to move to face the tv. As such, we didn’t spend any time there, only in the bedroom where we could both sit comfortably and watch the TV as they have a good included movie package.
The pillow menu was the same so we indulged again – Daz got his Alpaca and Tess a Ardor Outlast (cool/hot) and the bed itself was comfy and we both slept well each night.
The shower was warm with good pressure, nice overhead rain with wide spray.
Our package included breakfast both days and we were thrilled that it was a lot better than our previous visit. The pastries were fresh and well stocked, the options were good. What we did notice was the Sunday breakfast was very busy, lots of people coming in. However, the Monday public holiday, was confusing as the restaurant, website and hotel staff all had different ideas about what time breakfast finished. This meant that some items were being packed away even though technically there was still over 30 minutes of service remaining. We did pass this on when we checked out so hopefully before the next long weekend, they have sorted it out.
We also got room service one night, a lovely crème brulee, some croquettes, bread and salad. All items from the Luma restaurant which were delivered very quickly and tasted amazing.
We love the Playford and even though this room wasn’t as comfy as last time (it’s an old building, you have to work with what you have) we’d come back quickly as we love it. Very happy that the buffet breakfast is improving as well.

We stayed here last night as we were going to The 10cc concert. Arrival was swift and easy and the room was already available. Our room was a junior suite facing North Terrace, it was clean and quiet. We enjoyed 2 complimentary drinks from the bar. They have refurbished the hotel but I think the bar looks a touch bland and not welcoming. I would have thought that there would have been sanitiser available on all levels by the lifts and in the room also. The shampoo, soap etc no longer comes as individual packs but huge bottles and being still in Covid times I thought this a bit off putting. Breakfast was ok nothing special and luckily we had ours included or it would have cost us $42.00 per person and it was not worth that much. The pre-made pancakes were freezing cold. There was a good range of cereals and the fruit plates were nice but had defrosted and tinned fruit also. I found all the supposedly hot foods not hot but cool venturing on cold and they need to do something about the baked beans as they were nasty. We had a slight hiccup on leaving as we were almost charged for two glasses of red wine which we quickly told the receptionist we never had. She amended that quickly so all good.

The Playford was a three-star hotel masquerading as a five-star hotel. Most rooms are cheap and unsanitary and face either a back alley or the parking lot next door. As soon as we walked into the room, it reeked of cigarette smoke and dust. The bed was even more uncomfortable, and both the sheets and couch in our room had stains and holes in them. The room service menu featured tea, chicken soup, and a cheese plate. For the price tag you are much better off slumming it a cheap hotel for a quarter of the price or upgrading the Sofitel down the street. Overall, would not recommend and would highly advise no one to stay here.

I stayed here for one night and had the most wonderful experience - though my expectations are already set quite high for my favourite Adelaide hotel. While the hotel is expensive when compared to other 5-star properties in the Adelaide market, it sure makes up for it in terms of staff professionalism and friendliness.
The hotel renovated extensively during COVID and the clean, new, and wonderfully appointed rooms left me wanting for nothing. The bar staff have a good memory (though when it is busy service can be a little slow), and although the breakfast offering is small it did not leave me feeling unsatisfied.
The location of the hotel opposite Adelaide Railway Station and tram stop meant that I could conveniently get to any meeting, meal, sporting event, or function.

This was my second time staying at the Playford. I had an excellent experience last time so was hoping for a repeat. Check in was friendly and smooth. Room was smaller than my previous room last year but adequate. Pool was great and was the highlight of my stay. Unfortunately, I had a terrible sleep the first night due to an irritable clicking noise from the ceiling above my bed. I suspected it was a loose light fitting that clicked every time the person in the room above moved or put eight near the area. Needless to say, i requested a room change. Thankfully, the second room was great and I had a good sleep. However, housekeeping did forget to put tea and coffee second room. As I had to leave early for a conference, this was not replaced before my departure. Nevertheless, the location of the Playford across from the convention centre was very convenient and I also enjoyed the serenity of the walk along the riverbank. Overall, it was a nice stay.

This is indeed an interesting offering. With choices galore in Adelaide we thought we try this facility for a 4-day break away rather than a run of the mill facility. Location is very central and we walked everywhere , however some of the locals can be very noisy during the night. We booked a NY apartment at level 7 (up and down) Nice apartment but the outlook was to say the least poor. We found the couple next door to be very vocal at all hours and contacted reception. Without questions, the front desk moved us to another room after we complained about the noise. We were moved to a Junior Suite facing the main road. Lovely room (at least it has a view) but problems with the noise level. Even though they put in extra sliding doors to dampen the noise, it is not a quiet space. As we were there during Easter, we also found that the menu was very limiting, requiring us to have steak more often than we would normally eat. I still gave this a four star as we liked the decor, staff and location!

The room was large and comfortable with lots of storage, lounging space and a kitchenette. We loved the textures and colours in the room (and the hotel generally) and it was a relaxing place to stay. The bathroom was huge and the spa bath great to use after a long day of touring.
We ate in the restaurant for breakfast each day and also dinner on some occasions. The meal at dinner was amazing so we returned for a second time. Lots of local ingredients and well thought out dishes. The Boston Bay mussels were a particular favourite. The breakfast buffet had a good spread with eggs to order also available.
The location was very convenient to our hire car pick up but also key sites within the city.
Checkin and checkout were seamless, the bill was correct and accor and Accor plus benefits were all provided.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

The Playford was my favourite hotel prior to Covid, we spent many nights there. I was very excited to return this month with my daughter for a girls night, my mum and Aunty also booked a room for the same night. Unfortunately I left feeling a bit disappointed and frankly a bit ripped off. I initially booked a loft suite at my daughters request for something a bit special, also booked for breakfast and total price $544 for one Friday night. I was happy to pay this as it was a Friday and it is the “Playford”. I had a call a few weeks before informing me that the loft suite was being renovated and we would be upgraded to a north terrace balcony suite, I was happy with this. There is no longer valet parking, although self parking was only $30 and very easy and close, so not really a problem. Check in was easy and although it didn’t have the same feel as the old Playford, staff were still friendly and helpful. The room was large but outdated. The carpet was stained, the furniture looked worn and shabby. The bed was as I remembered and very very comfy. The bathroom was nice and seemed updated. The room was clean and complementary drinks from the mini bar and free movies is a nice gesture. Breakfast was nice but seemed not to be the spread it used to be. The service was lovely but it felt very cramped and maybe the tables could be spread out a little more. I was happy to be able to start earning some Accor points again but I stayed at the Sofitel at the start of the year and for the same price there is no comparison in quality of the accommodation, the Sofitel being a clear standout. Even with the little bit of revamp at the Playford, I’m sad to say it felt old and tired and unless I get a bargain on the room I wouldn’t stay for that price again. It’s great that The Playford was able to stay open and provide work for people during covid but it does actually feel like the rooms have been lived in a little too much and need a full overhaul. The Pullman was also a favourite and in the Accor group, but after staying there a few months ago, it was the same feel and unfortunately I’m leaving these hotels feeling they are no longer worth the money. I’d be happy to pay 200-250 but that’s about it. If you are looking for luxury and happy to spend 500-600 a night, check out the Sofitel or EOS. That said, the staff are as always lovely and we were comfortable, breakfast was nice and the hotel is in the best spot, it just wasn’t worthy of the price tag anymore.

I have never found the staff at The Playford to be rude and unhelpful. They have always been helpful and friendly.
Maybe the bar staff are a bit off but never the hotel staff.
