Celebrating my wife 50th birthday. We had an amazing time, relaxing pool side. All the staff were so kind and friendly with special mentions to Riti, Freda, Kesa, Atama and Merishka.
What a place. A must for your bucket list.

Obviously this is a beautiful hotel, the transfer was efficient and classy. Our lagoon room was very nice. We thought the pools, lagoon areas and the gardens were beautiful but it is always the details that are letting them down. For example the mattresses on the sun beds are very grubby

Service is in no way 5 star. The servicing of our room was very hit and miss. Sometimes items changed and nothing refilled while we were there. The young staff are hardworking and charming but so slow. Think this must be due to inefficient systems and no managers checking that all is working smoothly. For example getting tea or coffee at breakfast was hopeless. Ordering it when we arrived, we had almost finished our food before it came. Orders were confused and we were offered other peoples' drinks twice. A visit to the busy Amici restaurant was very disappointing. We waited 20 minutes for our order to be taken and a further hour before our main courses arrived. The Chianti wine was chilled. If I visit a local pub and someone gives me a cold red I'll just shrug my shoulders but not in a 5 star establishment. A pathetic excuse from a waiter that the sommelier likes it like that was not acceptable. Luckily the head waiter went to the trouble of sourcing a wine that had not been in the chiller. The food when it came was delicious but sadly our evening had been rather spoilt. Eventually a manager appeared and rather grudgingly offered us the meal for free which was kind but we would rather have had a better evening. Incidentally it would be interesting to. know where she had been while her staff were trying inexpertly to handle a full restaurant.

The next night the manager at the Pacific restaurant was totally visible, being very kind, helping her staff, taking orders etc. Complete contrast. We understand there ar staffing problems but we feel it is not appropriate to charge 5 star prices for 3 star service.

We just had a three night stay on Hayman after an expediated departure from Brisbane due to lock down. I am an ambassador member so got upgraded from a lagoon view to a king lagoon suite. The room was huge, spacious and had a wonderful balcony. The resort is beautiful and no expense has been spared. Due to covid our rooms could not be serviced and were oddly missing things like coffee cups and drinking glasses which we had to call for. Bottled water was delivered to the door. Breakfast was included and very nice but adherence to covid safety meant we could not help ourselves which was fine. Staff were friendly and service excellent particularly on the ride over where we were attended to by a former QF flight attendant whose customer service really shone through. A wonderful asset to the resort but I hope she finds herself back in the sky soon in a job she obviously adores and is brilliant at.

However I was surprised at the following which I felt dampened the experience which def does not come cheap.

1) the price of food is exorbitant- I could not eat much due to recent surgery so asked if the chef could make me a soup which she was kind enough to do. The pumpkin soup was indeed delicious but at $34 I was astounded at the price. Most mains are around the $40 mark. My daughter had a chicken dish in bam bams which was mediocre but I believe her pasta in Amici was delicious. Entrees were very limited so I just had some of hers as didn't want to get another $34 soup.

2) my $300 massage in the spa was excellent but I was very disappointed in the actual spa facilities compared to other resorts i have been to. Access to the steam room, sauna and plunge pool was included for me but my daughter was charged $25 for access to this very small area for 30 minutes. The plunge pool looked very tired and there was no spa pool anywhere in the resort which we were looking forward to as it was raining. Even the massage treatment room was very pokey.

3) the final thing that kind of annoyed me given that we all had to semi quarantine coming from Brisbane and had somewhat reduced service /facilities because of this, was the presence of a large group of staff in Amicis who were all crowded into the toilets on their night out and obviously a bit merry. I wouldn't have thought a resort of this calibre would encourage staff congregating in large groups especially considering the services were reduced due to covid. It was bizarre and in such a small resort it was very obvious. I felt like I was in a nightclub toilet with girls in very tiny dresses and tattoos and was very uncomfortable trying to wash my hands.

Despite all this the resort is pure luxury and it was a very relaxing holiday in these troubled times.

Dear scarlett67 Thank you for choosing Hayman Island Resort by Intercontinental and for taking the time to outline your valued feedback from your stay with us. Thank you for identifying the team member who made you feel so welcome during your arrival experience - I will pass this on to her personally and ensure that the General Manager is aware of this excellent feedback as well. I very much appreciate the feedback with respects to the dining and spa - comments such as these are critical as we continually strive towards exceeding all guests expectations during holidays with us - I have hence copied your comments and have forwarded them on to the relevant department heads, as well as the Resort Manager. I humbly apologise in regards to the encounter you had with staff members dining in the resort - please be rest assured that this is monitored very carefully by the Executive Office in conjunction with the Food & Beverage Manager, and is a somewhat "special occasion" treat on rare occasions. I am delighted that you found it to be pure luxury with us all at Hayman Island Resort, and so hope you elect to return again in the future. Kind Regards Gray Smith Executive Assistant to the General Manager

A dilapidated building externally, not attractive. Blistering paint, tatty awnings, cheap bunnings style pool furniture and the pool is plastic lined not tiled. We were in a pool access suite $1400 per night. It smelt of damp and drains. Housekeeping didn't service the room until 5pm after several phone calls to reception and housekeeping. The breakfast buffet was simply awful. The food is displayed in chafing dishes which is never a good idea. It was tepid not hot, there is no A la carte option. No fresh juice just concentrates, staff are inexperienced and untrained. I was expecting a world class resort experience. If you have stayed at a Four Seasons resort this place does not even come close! Imagine package holiday resort in Spains Costa Del Sol. To top is all off maintenance placed an ozone machine in our room to try to deal with the drain smell. They switched it on and left. We then read on the front of the machine in bold letter " Caution! Do not operate in occupied spaces" The gas it was omitting was dangerous. Astonishing incompetence. I have since learned that the owners of the property who also own Inter Con Sydney, do not want to spend any money on it and is the reason One & Only were kicked out. One & Only wanted the owners to spend money on upgrading the facilities as they are not 5 star resort standard. Rather than do that they got new management To anyone considering going here I would strongly advise not to bother. It's quite simply a dump. Beach activity staff were wonderful.

Dear Simon C Thank you for providing your comments from your recent stay with us at Hayman Island Resort by Intercontinental. It is disappointing to read that there were several elements of your stay which have clearly not met your expectations, and that you have therefore departed our island resort with a negative overall impression. I humbly apologise that this has occurred on behalf of the team here at Hayman. You have highlighted key issues which do require further investigation on the part of department heads and the Resort Manager, which I very much thank you for sharing. Only through critical feedback such as this can we identify service shortfalls and rectify accordingly, to ensure we uphold our promise of True Hospitality to all valued patrons of the resort. Extensive renovation works were arranged by the owners of the island throughout the resort after the devastation of Cyclone Debbie, in excess of $135 million across the island. This was to further enhance the room features and varying facilities on offer, and I therefore very much regret that you have not found these to your satisfaction. I wish to once again thank you for taking the time to provide your valued feedback. The service shortfalls you encountered have not fallen on deaf ears, and I am saddened that I am hence unable to change your mind as to the manner in which you will reflect on your time at Hayman. Kind Regards Gray Smith Executive Assistant to the General Manager

They should send some people to review those “stars” . New Year’s Eve diner was a joke , AUD 550 for a chicken satay (bad chicken satay) @bam bam . We arrived at 20:00 with 7 kids & 7 adults and the buffet was looking a war scene. Luckily the personnel was feeling so bad for us that the chef that we have seen for a few days felt guilty and tried to do something . People with any responsibility are hiding big time. If you want to know how you can spend your money and not getting anything back (besides nice infrastructure) come to this place .
Ooh by the way, it started to write a review because I ordered @ 18:22 a large coffee with hot milk and a peace of bread with butter and @ 19:42 after calling 2 times they figured out to find my room.
It is a shame that we have booked & off course prepaid this “five” star hotel till the 7 th of January. Two penthouse suites and a residence for 12 nights!!
I never thought I would live to leave earlier than planed a family Christmas holiday due to repeating disappointments .
If you a book a ibis hotel you don’t have the expectations you have when you book a new “five” star hotel where they have invested 130.000.000 of usd to redo the hotel.
I feel sorry for the staff because they do what they can . We take care of them, they have no guilt in this.
Maybe somebody opens his eyes from the decision makers and get something done , not for us , we are not planning to come back anytime soon but for future customers in order to keep the brand with better reviews then the ones I am writing. (I am not even talking about laundry & other malfunctioning departments in this good looking hotel .

Saying this I tried to be objective and the means are probably constructive.

Best of luck but you won’t get me twice

Philippe

I’m currently a guest for 4 nights. Normally I travel globally for in excess of half the year for work and pleasure, this year for obvious reasons I’m staying local.

Can’t fault a thing, from the welcome at HI airport, the one hour trip to Hayman on a perfectly adequate vessel with food and alcohol included, to the resort welcome and tour by Lisa the F&B Manager.

Dinner at Pacific last night and the meal arrived in what seemed like an instant from ordering and the salmon was cooked perfectly. The service was superb.

This morning at breakfast I saw the chef (I think he was Nixx, apologies if I spelled your name incorrectly) asked if he could make fresh pancakes - despite there already being some in the warmer. The request was met without any grimace and even delivered personally to the guests table.

I’d pre booked a massage (thanks Ben) at the spa, realising that it would be busy, and it was heavenly. Thanks to Mario and the team at the day spa. A great way to start the day.

Service by the pool at Aqua was prompt and friendly.

All in all given the current nature of catering for guests in a Covid environment with last minute cancellations and uncertainty the team are performing remarkably well.

The lagoon view room is spacious, equivalent if not better than some Six Senses resorts around the world, and housekeeping is spot on.

Congratulations to the entire team at Hayman Island. I’d certainly recommend the resort to many of my international friends.

Great job!

My wife and I spent four nights at Hayman to celebrate her 75th birthday in December.

We read some negative reviews about the service since it's reopening, but found everything first-rate, from the time you stepped aboard the launch until you step off..

This was our 4th visit to Hayman having previously been there on our honeymoon in 1964, before it closed for refurbishment again in 2010, before it was devastated by a cyclone.

But it back in business, better than ever. Our room was amazing, King bed' ocean view, dressing room, ensuite with separate bath. The TV free to air channels. No Austar but the wi-fi was good and we watched Netflix on the computer when it was hot outside during the middle of the day to expect that in the tropics in summer.

The format has changed to a more casual one, two restaurants, one Australian cuisine and the other Italian. Suited our needs given our length of stay, but the menu selection might be a little restrictive for a long stay.

Meal quality and presentation was excellent and portions more than adequate. My wife best fish and chips ever!

We were there just before Christmas and the decoration exquisite.

Whilst there were a few guests with children, their presence was not intrusive. There did not appear to be any facilities for children, but Hayman is not a family-style resort.

The hotel does not participate in the IHG club discount scheme, but you can earn points for a stay, but otherwise, everything was perfect.

It is a beautiful resort, lots of nature, amazing pool and beach front. However, food is below average, overpriced and served terribly. Long waiting hours for food (over an hour), you may not get what you ordered, this is in every restaurant especially Aqua at the pool. Poor management and poor quality of service. Very limited vegeterian options, you do not want to dine here if you don’t eat meat. Amici italian restaurant is just ok, with wine not served accordingly and why offer parmesan if you are not going to serve it? Staff seem disinterested. Though kind and nice, they do not seem to care. Food is below 3 star which is dissapointing as there is no other place to eat. We survived on dry salads, pasta, pizza and desert. Breakfast is good, though just one overworked chef making omlettes resulting in long waiting times. Because of this, this resort is not worth your money, very expensive, you pay for location and beautiful rooms and scenery.

I stayed at this resort with my wife and two adult daughters for four nights. There were parts of our stay that were definitely worthy of five out of five and parts that need work.

The transfer experience between Hamilton Island and Hayman Island is excellent, very smooth with a great boat and friendly efficient staff. The renovations at the resort since the cyclone are very nice and exceeded my expectations. The location is very nice with very picturesque scenery, a nice beach and great pools. There is also a god range of activities to choose from or just relax by the pool as there is always plenty of space with no day trippers.

The breakfasts were also very good and well stocked. However the dinner service in the restaurants needs some work. The staff were always friendly and seemed to be trying but lacked training compared to similar standard resorts. The food at dinner was also a bit bland and lacking in flavour. When you are paying a five star price expectations are quite high and this is one area that Hayman Island could improve.

All in all it is worth a visit but just be prepared to pay a premium price and that not every area meets premium expectations.

Thank you for your review Chris D. It is fantastic to read you enjoyed the majority of your stay, then again the fact the service & food in the restaurants was not to the standard you expected is very sad to hear. I am truly sorry you experienced these issues and please know I am certainly in the process of working with my Director of Kitchens & Director of Restaurants & Bars to improve in these areas immediately. Our third visit, the first under the Intercontinental brand.

We stayed in a suite with pool view. The refurbishment of the rooms is a welcomed enhancement adding a fresh look and modern conveniences. However, housekeeping lacked attention to detail with minor issues regarding cleanliness.

The staff are friendly and very welcoming.

Daily breakfast buffet has a good selection including a gluten free section with separate toaster. The pastries are such a treat, the mini muffins and donuts are delicious!

Seafood buffet at Pacific was well worth it and offered a wide selection of fresh and cooked seafood. We tried all the restaurants and found them to offer good, casual fare. None are fine dining, so don’t expect that.

The live music in the bar on Friday and Saturday created a more lively atmosphere during the evening and presented an alternative for the activities room where board games and a pool table were the main source of entertainment at night.

A small note in relation to the boat transfer from Hamilton Island. There may be a lengthy wait as other flights arrive. If the budget permits, a helicopter transfer is a better alternative to avoid the wait and to get into the island ahead of any crowds. Also, the boat used for larger groups is not the luxurious boat usually used for Hayman (as seen in the photo). It’s like a public ferry and not the welcome one would expect.

The water bottles and beach bag (to keep) are a nice touch.

Overall, a beautiful resort with friendly staff and nicely refurbished rooms.

A great location for a weekend getaway for couples escaping the city or just in need of some rest and relaxation.

The big pool isn’t heated but the other pool is, they felt the same to me but we were there in Summer. The ocean temp is sometimes as nice as the pool temperature. You might find the heated pool more effective in the cooler months. Hope this helps, it’s a lovely resort, enjoy your stay.
