It's a 2-4 hr crossing to Heron, from Gladstone, by boat. This is a pleasant experience in fine weather, as you sail away from the mainland past other islands and moored ships until eventually you arrive at the boat channel / jetty of Heron. The initial view is stunning, it's the tropical dream of crystal clear ocean over coral reefs...

There was as little or as much to do as you wanted, I just relaxed with no pressure to do anything at all. The staff was great, the scenery & wildlife was beaut, bit disappointed with the quality of restaurant meals

Island and reef are stunning, truly a natural wonder of the world. Resort itself is tired and very much needs updating. Birds, birds, birds everywhere with sounds, smells and poop. Staff are excellent! University of Queensland research centre an added benefit

Very removed from the world's issues. Nice beaches, great snorkeling. Staff members were quite helpful and knowledgeable. This was our second trip and we felt the same level of comfort and joy. Sun, sand beautiful fish and coral. What more could you want?

Amazing memories, turtles hatching, turtle laying, snorkelling straight off the beach, diving, bird watching, touring research facility. All while in comfortable but not flashy accomodation. Decent food and great service.

A Great place to see trurtles and for snorkelling. The staff were helpfu and available to explain all that is happening on and around the island. The island is easy to reach from Brisbane so fitting into a longer holiday schedule if you are visiting from overseas.

I wanted to take my family snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and our family trip to Heron Island Resort was just amazing. We saw turtle hatchings, snorkelled with turtles off the beach, manta rays and an incredible array of fish.

Island is a gem in the ocean with fascinating life in the trees and the seas. Get a reef room if possible. Go snorkelling both off the beach and especially in the harbour to see manta rays. Go out on the snorkelling trip.

I have visited Heron Island 7 times (first visit was in 1990). I always enjoy the island enormously. I also like the resort's mellow and low-key atmosphere and the emphasis on nature/snorkling/diving rather than high-end luxury activities. Over the almost three decades, however (and at least three different ownerships), I've seen an unfortunate decline in the quality of management. This...

After reading so many negative reviews about Heron Island I was concerned about poor quality, bird poo, noisy birds and inadequate meals. Heron Island far exceeded my expectations. It was amazing. The turtles and sea life were the highlights and we saw so much wildlife each day. The smell and bird noise were not an issue at all. The accommodation...
