Great Keppel Island Hideaway is widely regarded for its friendly and attentive service, though a few guests have encountered less than stellar interactions. The rooms receive compliments for their spaciousness and modern touches, with a minor caveat regarding soundproofing. Visitors frequently laud the hotel's serene atmosphere and picturesque events. While the majority of guests believe they receive good value, with reasonable rates and food costs, a handful deem some aspects overpriced. The variety and quality of amenities, including wildlife experiences and water sports, are often celebrated, and the overall cleanliness is acknowledged, despite occasional maintenance remarks.

Fantastic Holiday the staff were exceptional could not fault the food or staff. The Chef is brilliant and the meals rival anything on the mainland. Overall magical place full of beautiful beaches and wildlife experiences. Will be back!!!!

Thanks Ash. You have made my day. I love your comments and that is what I feel as well. I have had some amazing snorkels lately myself. Our reefs are so diverse and improving each year. I will pass your feedback on to our chefs. Ash we can't wait for you to get back and visit us again. Take care. Happy travels. Denise

What a fantastic island, we loved it!

We stayed at GKI Hideaway for 3 nights in a Garden Room. Accom is pretty average, it does what it needs to mostly & you really spend all your time at the beach or bistro anyway.
Garden Room is a very basic / budget donga that you only sleep and shower in. A few small improvements would make a big difference, like a clothes line attached outside for wet items, privacy screen over windows, ceiling fan in room to minimise need to run aircon, tidier more tropical gardens throughout & rubbish pick up along shoreline and beach close to Hideaway.

Otherwise, staff were very friendly backpackers & helpful despite being super busy most of the time. We got the food package with our accom & the meals were excellent, great sizes and great selection. Very pleasantly surprised! Cocktail selection for happy hour was on point! Views over looking beaches and sunset were incredible - what a magic spot!! A large open deck with chairs near edge of fence overlooking beach / sunset would be truly amazing!

GKI is low key, relaxing, peaceful and special.
Beaches are the some of the calmest & clearest water Ive ever swam in, warm temp 27 degrees & very safe. We took floaties and layed out in the water for hours! 5am swims were perfect with noone else around at Putney Bay. Snorkelling was great, earlier the better for more fish & less people. Mid tide was best. We saw lots of bright colour alive coral, variety of fish, turtles, squid, sea slugs etc. Hikes are fairly difficult to other beaches, definitely require good shoes, hat, sunscreen & lots of water.

We plan on coming back often to this little beauty GKI, & will definitely stay at Hideaway again. Will book one of the stand alone ocean rooms next time if we can.
Boat trip over on Keppel Konnections was great too.
Thanks GKI Hideaway.

We loved our stay here. The rooms were basic but perfectly adequate and there were no night time party people disturbing the peace during the weeknights we were there. There are no cooking facilities in the Palm or Garden rooms so byo electric frypan or something if self catering is your thing. There is free unlimited drinking water provided. The tap water is salty bore water. The bar had great happy hour prices and a couple of great all day specials. The restaurant food was very generous and of a good standard, with vegan options available. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We would recommend the midweek 3 night deal which includes breakfast, ferry and hire of something. We BYO'd snorkels and hired a kayak to paddle across to the adjacent Middle Island, you can pay an extra $10 per hour to extend hire which is well worth it. The snorkelling in each location we went to was uniquely different. The coral is sadly suffering from bleaching, but there is no doubt that this is a significant part of the Great Barrier Reef. Not for luxury travellers but for people who love a superb sunset and a friendly atmosphere.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback and review. Firstly we are so very pleased that you had a great time. Most of our rooms are very basic, but we would like to remind guests that we do have our new Studio rooms in Putney Place which are a great addition to our accommodation range. Guests staying in the Palm and Garden rooms don't have any cooking facilities, but if you do wish to self cater, all of our other accommodation range does have some cooking equipment. MId week we have our great 2 night packages that include all of your meals and are terrific value as well (including ferry transfers as well). Our kitchen team have been keeping our lovely guests happy for months now with the beautiful meals which are very generously sized. They do their best to cater for all dietary requirements. The hire rate is very good for kayaks and SUPs etc. The reef in Keppel Bay is very unique and includes a lot of soft corals and diversity. Reef heat stress does occur somtimes in late summer but we are very fortunate that it always bounces back. The natural colour of coral is fawn/brown. I certainly recommend guests trying all of different snorkeling sites if time permits as they are all quite different. There are many spots that do have some wonderful colour as well. Sunsets are tremendous and you only need to be in the sea view bar/ bistro area to enjoy the great view. Thank you again. We look forward to welcoming you back for another holiday and exploring our beautiful Keppel Bay.

This resort is located on one of the most beautiful coastlines one could imagine. The island interior however needs someone to take action and remove all the junk lying around. The GKI Hideaway is a little like that. The resort uses backpackers to provide most of the staff and while they are friendly, the cleaning and ground maintenance staff are poorly trained and going by the cleanliness of our accommodation and the ground maintenance, unsupervised. However, we did find the bar and bistro staff friendly and competent.
We booked an Island Cabin and while they were located close to the shore, the cleanliness was poor; the windows, insect screens, tracks, skirtings, sink, frypan all needed a good clean and/or vacuum, as did the floors, the ensuite was the worst it was just dirty . The cleaning staff did not appear to have a vacuum. The floors were sort of mopped and swept, but I had to use a broom to sweep out sand and dirt from the interior and around the outside table and bench seats on our arrival.
Maintenance was poor, dripping taps, the outside table and seats needed painting. Stepping stones needed to be placed out to the front seaside table and seats, one had to walk through the garden, well sort of garden, to gain access to the setting.
We did like the bed linen.
We stayed at 9 different locations on our Queensland trip, the GKI coastline was the star, but the Hideaway had the worst accommodation by far. We want to return to GKI, but it is doubtful we would return to the Hideaway.

Please do not miss going to Great Keppel Island it is incredible. Just reconsider a stay at the Island Hideaway.

From the outset our experience with this accommodation and the majority of the staff that we interacted with was terrible. I had a confirmed booking for a cabin that was beach front. After we paid the balance of the fees we were handed the keys to a cabin that was the third row back and given some excuse about a honeymoon couple that they gave my booking to. As a consolation we were given verbal permission to 'have a couple of extra cocktails on them'.

Our booking was the Cocktails and Sunset Cabin that came with a free cocktail on the first night. When my wife was looking at the selection of cocktails she was told that there was only one that we could choose from. That is not a choice. The wait staff appear to have no hospitality experience, while I support foreign travellers working to support their experiences, I doubt any training or structure exists.

There was on two separate occasions SMS sent to us that the water system was undergoing maintenance. This was only sent after the water was cut off to the site, so you have one cistern full of water. There were no options or alternatives provided for functioning amenities. In my opinion 'Maintenance' is planned and you make people aware before starts and offer alternatives. The second message that was sent changed the wording to 'a fault' is being repaired. Only after going to reception to find out how long the water would be off to the toilets I was offered a key to a vacant unit should I need to go.

The bistro has a monopoly on at least two of the three meal seating timeframes. Unfortunately, I cannot say that any meal that we had was to rave about. I can understand that this is an island and things will be a little more expensive but you at least want people to enjoy the food. A fruit salad my Wife had for breakfast looked like it had been through a concrete mixer and then served.

I feel that all the publications on their website build you up to a level of expectation that really hurts when you fall down into the reality of the service.

The ferry services to the island can have restriction on luggage similar to airline travelling, but try and be self sufficient for food just to save some money....especially true if you are travelling with kids.

Hi Clint, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, we apologise for the mix up in your accommodation. As an older island property, sometimes we do stumble across maintenance issues that are outside of our control and we ask for guest understanding while we try our best to rectify these. The elements of living on an island really take their toll on our systems and we do our best to keep on top of everything but sometimes we do have breakdowns or scheduled maintenance with unscheduled surprises. We'd love to welcome you back again to see this was a set of unfortunate circumstances rather than our normal service. Kind Regards, Eloise

This review should be read with the prices in mind. We stayed in a beachfront cabin for 5 nights for just $1150. The outlook from the front patio is breathtakingly beautiful, overlooking the vivid aqua blue sea and sheltered, clean sandy bay beach. There were few people for that big beach, so we often felt we had it mostly to ourselves. The cabin was quite private, too. We decided to go to Great Keppel as an add-on to a week at Heron Island. We wanted ‘rustic’, but with enough facilities to give a little comfort and without having to take all our food, water, etc. This definitely supplied those wants.
We were pleased to be able to eat all our meals at the Bistro which is excellent! In fact, we thought the food overall was better than our previous week at Heron Island!! Of course the facilities are not at the level of Heron island, but Heron could take some big tips from the way the Bistro at the Hideaway is run and the lovely food served!! We enjoyed the selection of cocktails and wines on offer.
The minuses for this resort are that it IS TIRED, and often looks like it could do with some TLC. There were two of us; the cabin has beds for 4 people. However there is NO place to hang clothes, no storage whatsoever! What one would do with 4 people in that cabin with all their clothes and ‘stuff’, I don’t know! The beds were in good condition, clean and comfortable. The bathroom, particularly shower area needs to be CLEANED!! If they would clean it and replace the yucky shower curtains, they would LIFT the cabin to a much more acceptable level (for 2 people ;-). We loved sitting out on the front verandah looking out over the beach and sea…very relaxing. NO TV!! There’s a dive shop, kayaks SUPs. The clientele is mixed!! We were looking for a hideaway and felt that we got it….We hope they are able to lift the items which need attention ;-). We wish them success, especially if they can hold on and improve!

Thank you for your lovely and comprehensive review. I would definitely advise that the Island cabins will have their bathrooms upgraded within the next 12 months. This will make an enormous difference to these cabins. I apologise that the bathroom didn't seem clean and the shower curtain. We have been working our way through all of the accommodation and improving the facilities, including more hooks on walls for hanging cloths etc. Thank you very much for your comments around our bistro and quality of meals. The team of chefs and kitchen hands do work very hard to provide lovely meals to our guests. We hope you will come back to visit us again for another island/reef experience. Take care. Denise

First off the location is amazing and we were blown away with the beauty of the island. Crystal clear waters, isolated beaches and some of the most enjoyable snorkeling and bush walking you could ask for. The room we had was great for the price, nice and clean, and the bed was reasonable and did the job for a few nights. We were in a "garden room" and the only downside was being able to hear the people staying directly next to us walk around and on one night the people out the back in other rooms talking loudly, but honestly it wasnt that bad and after a big day in the sun we slept like babies. I think maybe next time i would spend a bit more and upgrade to a beach side room for a bit more privacy and just to be that bit closer to the ocean. The meals were actually really good and much better than i expected, good size, fresh and plenty of options and just what you need after a day at the beach. Also I really have to mention and thank the chefs and waiter staff for looking after my vegan girlfriend, its always hit and miss with food when traveling with a vegan, but the guys there were really friendly and i appreciate them all for going out of there way and being cool with her meals. It made such a difference to the trip, so great job Legends! Also the check in staff were really friendly and helpful, the girl who checked us in gave us a good run down of the best spots to hike and swim and we found some amazing spots we would of never found with out her help. Overall such a great spot, awesome staff and a spot i will definitely recommend to friends. Looking forward to getting back asap!

Thank you for reviewing your holiday and sharing lots of wonderful information with fellow travellers. The island is very stunning with great snorkelling and heaps to explore. With your garden room, we understand they can be a little noisy and we look forward to doing some upgrades to this area throughout the upcoming year. I am very happy to read that our bistro staff were looking after your girlfriend's vegan meal requirements and the bistro and kitchen team continue their very good record of serving great meals. Our reception team is very friendly and helpful and love sharing places of interest with our guests. Can't wait to welcome you back and so happy that you may bring some friends with you. The resort generally is extremely run down especially for the price... 2 rooms for 3 nights $1069 in winter!! The rooms are a demountable shed with an air conditioner that has mould on walls and ensuite floors and walls. The paths around the resort have deteriorated significantly that the blue metal in the concrete is exposed and sharp that will cut bare feet. Employee accommodation are tent with frame style dwellings that are located between each guest accommodation. The tents are very old and mold can be seen on the inside of each tent as the condensation forms from colder days and nights. I give the overall resort a 2. The cleanliness is very poor in most areas including the eating area with beach sand on most tables and chairs every morning. It seems there is no interest to clean other than when guests move out of rooms. Extremely old and run down and until they commit to some proper renovations look elsewhere for your vacation accommodation. However the staff are very very friendly and accommodating to every request. The food and drinks were also very good and the atmosphere at the main area is happy with families and couples around communal tables. The island is great to explore with lovely beaches and walking treks. The water sports activities are also great for kids and adults.

Hi Robert. I am very disappointed for you and your family that you didn't enjoy your all of your holiday. We are a very old accommodation provider and over the last 7 years we have battled 2 cyclones, built a massive sand bagged wall to protect us from the ocean and now this year doing some major renovations to our accommodation. Robert there are a few items I would like to chat with you about and explain. As a larger family you chose 2 x garden rooms (side by side) and booked via a 3rd party booking agency. If our family accommodation is full we would offer guests who book directly the opportunity to have a lower rate to combine 2 rooms to fit you all in. It is difficult to change this when you arrive as the 3rd party booking site is going to charge us commission based on the full amount of your booking. We welcome guests to book directly so we can offer you what is absolute best for your family situation. You did pay peak rate as it is currently QLD school holidays for 2 weeks. After this week is over the rates go lower again. Our peak rates are not seasonal, they are based around our busiest times, school holidays, long weekends, public holidays. Our garden rooms were constructed on the island and have colour bond exterior walls. Robert I will have housekeeping check your room for mould, but I would like to explain that some of marks you can see are from our bore water which stains. We are very excited to be making over these rooms in the near future with new vanity basins, vanity cupboards, new glass shower screens, and new internal sheeting of the rooms. The newer garden rooms that you stayed in still have 3 staff tents in that area. They will be removed into the future and rebuilt into guest rooms. This is the only customer area. They are not permanently used by staff but in busy periods we do need to place staff in them. Robert the concrete paths that you refer to are exposed aggregate. This type of path has the rocky pebbles exposed and is less slippery when wet. They are a little rough when barefoot but I am not aware of anyone having cut their feet. I hope this didn't happen for you. We have been undertaking renovations all over the Hideaway grounds and some major projects coming in the next 12 months. We are privately owned by 3 local families and it is always exciting when regular guests come and see the ongoing improvements being undertaken. I am very happy that you did find the staff friendly and accommodating. Enjoyed our bar/bistro area and it does have a fun vibe. Also very pleased that you enjoyed the island, lovely beaches and water sports activities which are very popular. We hope you have fun travels for the remainder of your holiday and welcome the opportunity to bring you back after we have built new cabins, and done a major renovation to our family room area plus renovated the garden rooms that you stayed in. Thank you again. Kind regards Denise

We stayed at Great Keppel Hideaway for two nights peak time. The reception staff are great and very accommodating. Bar and restaurant staff also quite pleasant and accomodating. The facilities are very run down. It didn't bother us as we are here to see Great Keppel only. But if you are a traveller expecting pools and mini golf you will be severely disappointed. The food is also a problem. The menu stays the same and it's filled with plenty of expensive fried options. We stayed in probably their smallest room with only a bar fridge. With more for thought I would have brought breakfast cereal packs and fruit and had breakfast in the room lunch at Tropical Vibes close to Hideaways (meals are much cleaper and they have wrap salad options) and only dinner at Hideaways. If you have a room with facilities I'd bring most of your food and cook. I love to have a break from cooking when on holidays, but Great Keppel is definitely a place I would try to prepare as many meals as possible myself. They have live music on weekends. I'm not sure if it's each weekend or only when it's busy, just ask them when you book. We got to enjoy the live music which was lovely while watching the sunset.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback. We're certainly a back to basics accommodation provider and not by any means a resort with pools or flash facilities and we hope we portray with accurately prior to arrival. Our accommodation is comfortable, island living with ensuites and air conditioning but no mod-cons. We apologise if you didn't enjoy our menu, it has actually recently changed with a change in kitchen team. Guests are certainly welcome to self-cater partially if they'd like, however without a grocery store on the island we offer the all meals option for the convenience of our guests. We offer live music weekends and throughout peak periods and it is always a hit at happy hour with the sun setting over mainland Australia!

We stayed in The Hideaways Garden Rooms for two nights and the accommodation is basic and a little dated but it’s clean and suits the vibe of the island - a place you want to feel part of, not a blot on. If boutique hotels are your bag you’ll struggle. The rooms have no TVs either as the ethos is to get away from it all but there is a 4G signal if you really must connect.

The staff were very helpful, cheerful, and knowledgable, can't fault them at all, in fact went out of their way to accomodate our needs.

What surprised us was the quality of the food in the bistro, it was very good, portion sizes were on point and the steaks cooked to perfection, Just watch out for Kookaburra as one had a couple of tries at my lunch!

At busy times you’ll wait until 2pm to get into your rooms so pack a day bag so you can get on with your day until it’s ready, especially if you get the early boat to the island.

If you are looking for a back-to-nature stay to kick back and chill, take part in some of the wide variety of activities available or just to take in the incredible beauty of the island then this is the place for you

Hi, we are travelling in December, will we need stinger suits to swim in the sea?

Thank you for your enquiry, we don't get a stinger season as such - not like the islands up north. Never say never, it is the ocean and we are mindful of stingers between December and February.

When is a great time to spend 2 nights on the island

depends what your travel preferences are. If you prefer peace and quiet, an easy pace, recommend go during the week. Peak times are Friday afternoons til Sunday afternoons and can get really busy with people enjoying themselves everywhere. In saying that the main beaches are the most popular (Putney and Fishermans) the other beaches take a bit of time (up to 2 hours walk or can get a short boat transfer around). If you want to hang around the village a weekend is fine, if you want to explore the island weekdays are best so you can do at your own pace without interference from others and you will most likely find you will have every Beach to yourself.

Hi Lisa, There is 1 BBQ that is shared between the 3 beachfront cabins. We use to have a lot more BBQ's however they were continuously mistreated by guests in the past so we don't really have them anymore. There is an electric fry pan in the room though as well as a microwave. The meals package is $75/adult per night of stay. You get lunch on your day of arrival through to breakfast on your day of departure. You can order anything off the menu including an entree and main for dinner. You can let us know on arrival whether or not you would like it. Many thanks, Jordy

Hi there, Our meal package includes lunch on arrival, an entrée and main at dinner and breakfast the following morning consecutively until your day of check out - so when you check out, you just get your brekkie. Kids stay and eat for free from the children's menu with a paying adult. No drinks are included. Kind Regards, Eloise
