My family has a 3 night stay at the Great Keppel Island Hideaway. It is more at the "budget" end of Queensland island resorts, though obviously costs have to take into account the logistics of running an island resort. It was a fun place to stay as a family. We stayed in a cabin (with en-suite, and limited cooking facilities) in Putney Place section. As we had to use the sofa-bed for our 5th child it did seem a bit cramped at times. It was noisy during the daytime/evening as it was close to other cabins, but at least everyone was quiet after around 9pm. One issue with this area is that you could smell the adjacent septic tank, and other people in that area also commented on this issue. The restaurant food was good, though my main meal arrived well after my kids had finished their kids meals. There is not much other choice for evening meals on the island, other than a Pizza place that was closed during our stay, though there is one other place open for lunches. Staff were friendly, though mask wearing compliance in the restaurant was somewhat limited. Whilst there are luggage transfers between the ferry and the Hideaway, you may still need to transfer your luggage up to a few hundred metres at the start and end of your stay. There are lots of options for walks to nearby beaches, plus a diving company that run snorkel trips, hire, and beach drop-offs. The reefs had a lot of sea life including turtles and rays. The rest of the island is somewhat post-apocalyptic, with a huge abandoned resort and airstrip (though good if you like urban exploring).

We decided last-minute to spend two nights on Great Keppel Island. I booked the room at 9am, phoned Reception to make sure it went through and found ourselves on the ferry by 9.30am. The island is much more beautiful than we expected and it's a must-see if you are in Yeppoon. We enjoyed our stay at the Hideaway. The atmosphere is very peaceful and relaxed, perfectly matching the island lifestyle. Great for solo travellers, couples and families alike. Reception staff is very friendly and helpful, food is average but pretty good considering the remoteness of the location. Only issue was a miscommunication between Reception and Housekeeping which caused us to move around a few rooms before getting the final one ready to go. But the lovely ladies at Reception fixed it by giving us an upgrade and some drinks on them. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: For just a few $$ more I would recommend the Putney places. Fully renovated, very comfortable.

Basic accomodation in a beautiful setting - it’s not luxe but that’s what makes is relaxing. Simple food options and friendly staff at the barefoot cafe (with a great view). This is almost off the grid/backpackers level but not quite, if you’re looking to get away from it all, this is the place.

My family and our friends went to Great Keppel Island this week and had such an amazing time. We had the hideaway house for the week and it was modern, clean, well equipped and spacious. Our friends had a Garden Triple room. This was significantly smaller and they wouldn’t stay there again due to the toilet being right next to the bed and very cramped for a family of three. It is worth spending the extra funds to stay in the nicer rooms. We had purchased the meal package and holey moley did we eat. The portion sizes were large and we were throughly stuffed after every meal. The food also was delicious and we didn’t have 1 meal we didn’t enjoy. I specially loved the risotto, Caesar, ribs, eggs Benny and our little munchkin loved the nuggets. Ellie our waitress was so lovely and always had a smile on her face and helped us with any questions we had. We absolutely loved happy hour and we were there at 4pm every day so we didn’t miss out on Darren’s Pina Colada’s, he made the best. I had them all week as they were so good. Oh and the daiquiri’s. In saying all that, all the staff were so friendly and helpful. The beaches were beautiful and we couldn’t recommend it for families more. We will be definitely be going back again.

With the amount of changes our huge group of friends kept on making with departure times on our last day staying there. We all were really impressed with how calm, easy going, friendly and accommodating this lovely young lady in reception, Rach E, was in ensuring we were promptly sorted.
