This place has a good safe atmosphere and is pretty central to anything most would want to do in Townsville. It’s a great place for backpackers to stay for awhile and get a job elsewhere. I’m staying in a dorm but there’s plenty of nice cheap private rooms when I want to get more privacy

I have been staying at the Civic Guest House for 3 weeks now and have had an incredibly pleasant stay - the hostel is quiet and comfortable enough to live in while working but also has a great social scene. Facilities are excellent - WiFi is really fast and has great coverage around the building, kitchen is clean and well maintained and there is a common area with TV and streaming services. Would definitely recommend

Horrible, please stay away. Since our arrival in civic guest house that Joe treated us in an arrogant and rude way, as I kept asking him for information while checking in he just kinda ignored me or told me he didn't know. We asked for a double room, and he asked us why would we need a double room. Don't know what was wrong with this guy, but in his head he tough we weren't a couple even tough he had nothing to do with it. It was late in the night and we were very tired so we didn't had any other option than to just ignore and stay here. If this wasn't enough I saw this pervert looking and commenting on other girls guests, while he was showing us where our room was. A part from this, the hostel looks like and old hospital and is very noisy during the night, bathroom and kitchen were disgusting and not clean at all. Definitely not staying here again, if you can, please choose another option.

Response from Cathy K, Owner at Civic Guest House Backpackers Hostel
Responded 12 Jan. 2021
This entire review is a LIE. Firstly, on the night that you stayed at our Guest House, our employee Joe was not on reception when you arrived. You and your friend were checked in by a female staff member - we have you on CCTV, her signature on your Covid questionnaire and the roster to prove this. So all of you comments about Joe making comment about your room type and commenting/ perving on female guests are a COMPLETE AND TOTAL LIE. Your only interaction with Joe was when he noticed the smell of smoke coming from your room after midnight - AND FOUND YOU SMOKING ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES. When he noticed it again later, you were asked to leave. Your actions (smoking in room) were in fact placing the lives of all of our sleeping guests at risk by creating a significant fire hazard. We should be ones warning other hostels to avoid YOU as a guest as you clearly have no respect for rules or the lives of other travellers.
