We had a fantastic 12 day holiday at Hibiscus Resort & Spa, escaping the cold New Zealand winter. We loved our spacious, tastefully decorated one-bedroom unit, with the private and secure balcony being like an extra room. Our unit remained cool and fresh with the airflow from the bathroom window going through the bedroom and living area to the balcony. We occasionally used the fans, but never needed the air conditioning. The resort is a convenient distance from shops, restaurants and the beach. The picturesque grounds with their lush gardens and pools make for very restful views from the units on all floors. We found all reception and housekeeping staff to be friendly, helpful and efficient. We booked several tourist excursions through Lucha and he made everything so simplified and stress free. for us. I loved using the luxurious MOR toiletries,, a special touch much appreciated. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hibiscus to friends and family travelling to Port Douglas.

Loved our return stay at Hibiscus. The location is perfect for walking distance to everything. It’s a quiet get away resort that allows easy access to everything PD has to offer. The surrounds of the resort are well maintained and our room had everything we needed to dine in and enjoy or easily access the Main Street and activities. Staff helpful and pools the chillax we needed. Much appreciated and we would again choose this as our go to PD home stay.

Lovely conplex with very nice pool.
Our apartment was all we could have wanted apart from being on the first floor as there isn't a lift and we had a lot of luggage.
Both bedrooms were a very good size with really comfortable beds and a bathroom each!
The living area has a balcony overlooking the pool and a small kitchen area.
We needed to wash clothes as we were on a long trip and there's a laundry room where you can wash and dry for a small sum.
The location is fantastic - a couple of minutes walk from the main street. Would definitely recommend.

Hibiscus Resort and Spa probably needs to go back to it’s original name of Hibiscus Gardens. If you are looking for 3 star clean accommodation walking distance from town, then this is the place for you. If you are looking for a resort, then it’s not. The pools are great and fairly warm, but there is no onsite restaurant or bar, no porter, the air conditioning is in the bathroom, you have to cook and shower with all the doors and windows open to not set off the fire alarms, but then with no fly screens your room fills up with mozzies. Plus there are no exhaust fans. If the fire alarms are so sensitive, would you not install exhaust fans in at least the kitchen? After a second night of multiple mozzie bites and waking up to a tropical cockroach on the floor I decided I was done and ended up staying somewhere else for the remainder of our trip.

One week out from arrival I received an email saying that due to COVID there would be no breakfast served. This adds significant cost I wasn’t expecting, as my package was breakfast included. Our room is on the third floor which is wonderful for a view and minimal neighbours, however there is no porter. Lucky for me my husband is fit and can take our suitcases up 3 flights of stairs. Many people I observed struggled with this. The resort itself is tired. The room was not super clean, hairs on chairs and beds, despite being told everything is because of COVID. The shower is over the bath and it’s a huge step up into the bath, not good if you have mobility issues. The air conditioner is also in the bathroom meaning that you have to have the bathroom door open the whole time to cool any other room. There is no mid week service so you have to wash and dry your own towels, and if you use more than your allotted 2 toilet rolls you have to purchase additional toilet paper. Yes purchase. There are no tissues so needless to say I used the toilet paper and needed another roll.
The only dining table is outside, and the bed is incredibly uncomfortable. I woke up in pain every morning, so between that and the insects we are moved accommodation despite the cost. The reception staff are friendly, although not there all day/early morning so when you need more toilet paper they are not in.

I would of rated the accommodation higher except when you go back through reviews from 2018 (pre COVID) people said the beds were really bad, no fans and no screens and they moved accommodation, so despite this feedback for 3 years nothing has changed. Other places are saying please be patient as they are upgrading or renovating. Personally won’t be staying again, but it depends on what you are looking for in your accommodation as to whether this place is for you.

We were so impressed with this resort. It may be just a little bit dated but it had everything we wished for.
When we arrived, we found we were in a room on the top floor (with no lift). As I recently had a knee replacement I knew I would have trouble with our luggage and simply getting up and down the stairs. The lady at reception was extremely helpful, even offering alternative accommodation, but we ended up staying in this room and we were moved to a ground floor room for the following four nights. We were helped in getting our luggage up for the first night and the following day the staff moved all our things to the ground floor room.
This unit was the closest to the pool at the back of the building and was perfect. We had a small kitchen, good lounge area, large bedroom and huge bathroom including a spa bath.
The pool was a good size for swimming, the grounds were extremely well kept and there were even two Weber Q barbecues available.
The grounds and units are in a Balinese style and were very clean.
The area was quiet and very suitable for couples and probably families as well. It is in easy walking distance of the restaurants and cafes in Macrossan Street and Four Mile Beach.
Thoroughly recommended and we will stay here again.

What a find! Perfect location, short stroll to everything in Port Douglas. Pools are lovely, laundry onsite, towels provided for the pools, very comfy king size bed and a spa bath in our one bedroom unit. Very clean room and everything you’d want. Only negative (being a retired couple) was our room was on the top floor and lugging up suitcases up 3 flights of stairs was tough. Fiona and Jenny were very helpful and courteous. Small kiosk to buy ice creams and snacks to indulge by the pool and a book swap area. Highly recommend. Thank you for 10 perfect days.

Hi Michelea Thanks for the lovely review - especially mentioning Jenny and Fiona - total super STARS on our team. Hibsicus guests do love a cheeky ice cream by the pool so we keep lots in reception. We'd love to see you again and maybe next time we can arrange some muscles on our team to help with those heavy bags. But gosh - we know it is worth it once you're up amongst the palm tree branches hey ? tropical bliss :)

I booked this accommodation through “”Hello World”. I booked two “One bedroom: rooms”. One for my husband and myself and the other was for our friends who accompanied us on the holiday to Port Douglas.
The pictures of the rooms and pool areas are made to look really good. They picture very well BUT that is not what you get.
We were all extremely disappointed as we approached the reception, noticing that whilst they had great pool areas they were certainly in need of love and updating. The roof tiles of the huts were black and appeared to be covered in mould and the reception area looked dingy and tired.
The staff were very friendly and provided us our keys to our rooms. My husband and I had room 4 and our friends had room 7. When my husband and I entered the room we immediately felt that it was very dark with no real natural light. The room, furniture and all of its kitchen area were quite old and dated. There was limited cupboard space to put our clothes in (a very small closet), the side tables in the bedroom had no drawers and the bath room had no cupboards at all!!! We literally had to live out of our suitcase and had to move a small table into the bathroom to put our toiletries in!
The floor was floor boards and every time we walked across is it squeaked!
To top it all there were only 2 bath towels and when I approached reception to get two more she advised that extra towels would costs $2 each and when I asked about beach towels I was told that we were “lucky” as beach towels were free for now as they usually charged for them as well!!
The TV in the lounge area was outdated and very small. They provided a DVD player LOL. The DVDs provided for free at reception were quite old as well.
They purport to be a 4+ star Resort and charge it as well but honestly this was such a disappointment for both us and our friends.
Both rooms particularly room 7 provided no privacy and was a complete thorough fair. The blinds on the windows even when closed you could see straight through them. The view from Room 7 provided a view of big rubbish bins and not to mention our friends were woken up when they were being emptied and collected in the early hours of the morning! And oh their TV was on the blink as well!!!!
If I was to provide any good rating it is for cleanliness, the rooms were very clean and oh you got free Wi-Fi.
I would not recommend this place particularly Rooms 4 and 7. And definitely any room that is on the ground floor if you appreciate your privacy. I will definitely NOT RETURN.

Be careful when booking. Some accommodation on ground level are small, poor lighting and dated. We requested an upgrade after arriving and were able to secure an apartment on first floor over the larger pool area. Pool was great but no meals or bar available (COVID maybe?) Rooms are good size but in need of complete update. Noise travels easily from surrounding apartments, shower over bath presented a slip hazard. No linen or towel changes under 8 days. Being wet season TV would be handy - Unfortunately no smart TV and pixilated free to air reception made it impossible to watch. Reception was closed 3 days of our 7 day stay. Location is great, close to McCrossin Street main area, and restaurants. Price is probably fair ... look elsewhere if luxury is your pick.

Thank you for your fantastic 5/5 review! 🌟 We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay and found our location convenient for exploring all the gems of Port Douglas – from the beach to the Main Street and the wharf precinct. We appreciate your mention of the stairs; it’s a helpful tip for future guests. While some of our rooms do require stair access, we’re always happy to help find a more suitable option for those who might prefer ground-level access. It’s great to hear you enjoyed relaxing by our pools and soaking in the Balinese-inspired gardens – they truly are a little slice of paradise, aren’t they? We hope to welcome you back for another wonderful stay soon! Warm Regards,

Our trip was unfortunately cancelled (like many were) due to covid. We had a planned trip with friends, who managed to arrive safely in PD before the lockdown – and had booked a 2 bed apartment. We notified hibiscus via a phone call 2 weeks prior to say that we may not make it. They were all very sympathetic and wished us well. When our friends arrived and checked in they told Hibiscus Mgt that we would not be coming and could they downsize to a 1 bed room instead of the 2 bed apartment. Once again the response was very sympathetic and replied it didn’t matter they could stay in the room they are in, stating they had no rooms available. Whilst our friends were there they noticed that hardly any of the rooms were occupied and they could have downsized. They then asked again at reception (day 3) to be told they couldn’t move out of the 2 bed apartment. When they asked the question as to why, and noted the occupancy was very low, they gave no response. Hibiscus chose not to move our friends. We were initially baffled thinking they did this because there was no staff around to move them into another room, due to Covid.
When we reached out to Hibiscus (Jenny from star resorts) for a refund, she refused bluntly, stating that our friends did stay in the 2 bed apartment, so we pay for a 2 bed apartment. We now know why they refused a downgrade.
Of course they are correct, our friends did stay in the 2 bed apartment, only because Hibiscus Mgt refused to place them elsewhere after numerous requests to do so. We are all suffering from covid but don’t hit the little people Hibiscus. $900 + is a lot of money for a holiday that we didn’t take. Beware of this place, they are happy to take your money but when covid hits – forget a reimbursement.
