My wife and I had a seven day stay here, and it was just perfect - we had a charming room, decorated in Balinese style, with a balcony. It was very quiet, yet central. We had access to the kitchen and laundry at all hours. Being close to the Esplanade, Reef Street Plaza, Central Station and main bus route along Lake Street, we were easily able to catch a ferry to Fitzroy Island for the day, visit the Butterfly Sanctuary at Kuranda, explore the Botanic Gardens and Mount Whitfield walking tracks, and visit the superb beaches at Palm Cove and Trinity Beach. This motel is only rated at 2 stars as it does not have a restaurant, but deserves higher. Sally was generous and helpful to us at all times. It was very good value, and we will be back!

Having returned from a round the world trip and having stayed at the The Balinese, I can honestly say that it is one of the best establishments my girlfriend and stayed at.All of the guys there are fabulously friendly and welcoming, the rooms are comfortable and clean, the facilities are good, the situation is perfect - queit and only a 5 minute walk into town - and frankly, I would be surprised if you could get better value for this price anywhere else in Cairns. I say "stay here or you're mad"!And give Rose a hug from me!

We stayed for 2 nights prior to flying to Darwin. The room was clean, quiet and functional. The a/c worked and the bathroom was ok. Plenty of hot and cold water with toiletries and clean towels
Breakfast is self service tea, coffee sachets, cereals, toast, jams, fruit and DIY near the splash pool ( which we didn't use, but it looked clean).
Remember to take the gate code if you go out into the CBD as it's shut after 7pm.
There was tea/coffee in the room etc.
The Balinese is situated about a 15 minute walk from the main eating places which are at the far end of the boardwalk on the harbour( no swimming, its mostly muddy sand and no beach but there is a large free public swimming pool also near the marina end of town).
We ate in the food hall of the night market, many stalls selling Asian food at good value prices from $12.50 up to about $16.50 depending on plate size. BYO drinks, it's permitted.
If this review is useful I would appreciate your positive vote!

Rooms are ok value but nothing special. Just adding wood furniture to an old motel does not a Balinese make. Reception staff were the worst I have experienced in years of travel. Wifi was supposed to be free but one staff tried charging me. Unlike other hotels in Cairns the staff here are completely useless at booking tours. Go elsewhere

Booked over the internet for a late night arrival one night layover. The staff replied to email inquiries promptly and was quite helpful. They'd left the keys in the electric slot with the A/C on and the door open for me, so that I arrived close to midnight to a comfortable room. Breakfast area was quite relaxing next to the pool. Self-serve including clean-up. Free internet access from the full kitchen. Convenient location, just a few blocks from the Esplanade and shopping areas. Free airport shuttle during daytime hours was very convenient.

Very impressed with this place when we stayed there for about 4 nights in mid February. For the price we paid, via Expedia, it was superb value for money. We had free internet usage, a little pool, kitchen, free breakfast and a nice room with air con, tv etc. The place is quite small and on two levels, motel style. There is a small reception office but it was hardly ever manned when we were there. They do offer free airport pick up and you can get in contact with staff at the Bay Village (the sister property) quite easily at any time. Not 5 star, but great value for money, so for that I would give it an excellent rating. It is a bit of a walk into central Cairns, (maybe 15 mins?)but we did it lots and never found it a problem.

The Balinese Motel was the worst hotel I stayed in the Cairns area. I asked for a single room and was given a dark, dingy room that was jam packed with two small single beds and an open fold away bed which made the room even more cramped. The bedding had a terrible musty smell, which suggest that they were either not washed or that there was mould in the rooms. I felt so uncomfortable as for sure the roaches were out as soon as the lights were off. The walls were as thin as paper which meant I could hear my neighbour's every word and television. The receptionist was never there and very unfriendly. Thank goodness it was just the one night and I had a 6 am flight to take. I would not recommend it even for an overnight stay.

My boyfriend and I intended to stay 2 nights here at the end of our holiday. We travelled that day and arrived at 3pm. Reception was closed and the phone for when reception is closed was broken. The opening hours are 6- 10 and 4-7 from memory. So without being able to check in we went into Cairns for a late lunch/early dinner. We came back after 6 and there was a lovely lady with dark hair who helped us check in and gave us pool towels. Being hot, we jumped in the pool straight away. My boyfriend was interested in doing some laundry and opened up the nearby washing machine. There were three pubic hairs in the drum. We decided not to do laundry. When we got to our room there was a small clump of hair on the floor in the entrance way which I was able to kick outside. We went to place out bags under the window there was considerably more hair and a different colour on the window ledge. Finally I went into the bathroom where there was even more and again a different colour of hair all over the floor of the shower. The bathroom bench had toothpaste stuck on it and drinking glass rings (which I was easily able to wipe off with a towel) and it was all very apparent that the room hadn't been cleaned. I went to reception to ask for a different room but as it was 6:58 it was closed. When I returned my boyfriend simply pointed at the wall behind the bed with his mouth open. I turned to see a cockroach crawling off the wall and onto the bed. We grab our things and left. I went back the next morning at 9:30 to speak to the hotel about changing rooms or obtaining a refund. A large lady with blonde hair was there cleaning rooms and reception was again shut. I told her that we were meant to stay last night and stayed somewhere else instead all she said was "ok". I proceeded to tell her that we would like to check out even through we were meant to stay another night. She said "ok". i told her the reason we weren't staying was because our room was dirty. She said "why didn't you say something yesterday?" I told her we came to reception at 6:58 and it was closed so we are telling her now and she said "ok" and grabbed the key from my hand. I asked for contact details to request a refund and she handed me a flyer and continued cleaning. She acted as if this happened every day.

We stayed two nights, arriving late on the first. Instructions were forwarded (email) and easy to follow. Sally (with a lovely welcoming smile) told us not to hesitate in using the out of hours phone if we had any issues. The room was lovely and spacious, I love ceiling fans and was able to open the sliding door to get airflow, in pref to the in-room air con (yes there is a screen door to protect from bugs!). A lovely simple breakfast enjoyed by the pool, backpacker style, but perfect if you want a classic Aussie breakfast. Five minute walk to the Esplanade. I would happily stay at The Balinese again. PS $15 with Uber from the airport.

A simple, affordable getaway place with all the right stuff. The Balinese is a pleasant 10 minutes walk to the heart of Cairns Esplanade. The rooms are clean, tad dark (but just the way I like it) and has all the basics one need - air conditioning, tv, toiletries. Free continental breakfast by the pool is definitely a bonus and there is free use of the communal kitchen. The pool is beautiful for some chill out time.

There is a convenience store across the road which comes in handy. Very close to the airport (definitely take the taxi instead of the bus, about $15-20).
