Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Perfect place to stay for groups. Great location and facilities! Shopping centre really close, just 4 min walk. Peaceful and quiet area. Nice pool and barbeque place. Very kind and warm hospitality. We had a plast in there :)

to call ryans rest a boutique hotel is a bit of a stretch. Its a backpackers stay and that's it. It looks nice from the outside but inside its old and dilapidated. Loud floorboards, old and broken furniture. No bedside tables. Metal works going on next door. (grinding, welding) no water for showers in the morning ( when questioned, I was told they had a plumber in but I could shower next door..) Pay the extra 5 bucks and go to a motel

Stayed here twice. Place is like a backpakers place, though a lot calmer than what I have tried other places. Everything is very clean and nice - also the kitchen, which I have found not that nice other places. Place is in a safe area, very close to shopping center and walking distance to esplanade and everything else. Can only give my very best reccomandations!

I was very impressed with their accommodation. A beautiful old house that makes you feel at home, as did the staff. Huge rooms, very clean, a comfortable bed and nicely furnished. Extremely quiet and "restful" and in a fantastic position. Very well priced. I recently stayed at a backpackers and for the same rate, had a room with nothing but an uncomfortable bed and 3 hooks on the wall. Not even a bedside table. Highly recommended, will definitely be staying there again.

We stayed 2 nights while visiting Cairns. Very happy with the accomodations. The place is in an old Queenslander timber house. Very central, just behind the Myer Centre. Our whole family enjoyed the stay . . 5 people easily accommodated. The kids enjoyed the couple of cats who wander around the property. The cats never came inside.

If you suffer from insomnia, or if you "sleep like a log" this is the perfect place for you, otherwise find a good motel! "Boutique accomodation" is very misleading - website should read "Boutique backpacker hostel accommodation". The floorboards are very noisy with everyone walking on them at all hours of the night and early hours of the morning. The walls are "paper thin" so you can hear people's conversations next door and definitely will not mention all the other sounds. The only positive points of our stay was that we ate out every night in cairns. The stench of body odour in the room was stifling, even "febreeze" had a hard time doing its job. Will definitely not stay again.

I can highly recommend staying here. It is not a hotel, it is a basic guest house with nice management and good services (coin operated laundry on premise, good kitchen, computer). Great common areas, and I was super lucky to get a HUGE room, with a veranda (!?). Stay here if you want a calm, safe, cheap place to stay. Do not stay here if you want hotel standard suites straight on the beach. This is a place with personality, so it suited me. Sitting on the porch when the tropical rain came down all around, like sitting in a house inside a shower - great experience, great memory.

As an American ex-pat we now live two hours north of Cairns. We were delighted when we found, about two years ago, this lovely and classic Queenslander that has been turned in to a variety of choices for accommodation. Driving for four hours is a bummer so we often stay over in Cairns. We ALWAYS stay at Ryan's Rest. Folks, this is not a glossy magazine stay so get off yer high horses. It sits in the heart of Cairns but is generally very quiet, clean and welcoming. Kudos to our friends, owners, Michael and Cam. Penelope, Jonah and Rob. (Cow Bay, QLD)

I frequently use Ryan's rest to provide accomodation for my new staff members. Cameron and his Dad run the place and i have only good things to say about this location. the rooms and shared areas are cleaned on a daily basis, the frequentation is good so no unecessary noise. the place provides the perfect compromise of convenience, affordability and proximity. for a short or long stay, Ryan's rest is a solid option
