Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns, is lauded for its prime location near the water and local attractions, which has been a highlight for many guests. The hotel's atmosphere and rooms receive mixed reviews, with compliments on modern amenities and cleanliness but criticisms regarding noise and dated aspects. While the amenities, including the pool and club lounge, are popular, inconsistencies in room and breakfast quality were noted.
Service is generally seen as warm and professional, although it can falter during peak times. However, some travelers question the value, pointing to the need for refurbishment and high costs.

Detailed Reviews
We spent another brilliant week at the Shangri La. We don't upgrade, we are perfectly happy with the standard rooms which have more than enough space - and a huge shower cubical with a very useful, retractable washing line. We requested and were given exactly the same room we had the year before as we loved the quietness and privacy which it gave. Breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice – we thought they were even better than the year before. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Thank you for another wonderful stay - we're coming back again in October 2025.

I have been fortunate enough to enjoy the Shangri La brand in the past across Asia and in London at The Shard due to work so I was looking forward to the stay in Cairns during my Aussie tour.
Unfortunately 3 nights were spent in 3 different rooms meaning a lot of changing around and a generally unsettled experience.
Room 1: Originally booked a Deluxe Seaview room and was happy with it - the room was fresh, clean and seemed to have had a somewhat recent facelift. Bed and bathroom were great, as was the balcony and view which was enjoyed. There were a few minor maintenance issues such as broken coffee cupboard doors, scuffs etc but was happy to overlook these for an overall sense of cleanliness, comfort and the view.
On night two returned to room and there was a very audible, heavy bass beat and sound of a live singer from under the room. Upon speaking to reception they advised it was an external bar under the hotel and as it was a Friday night it would be going until at least midnight. Therefore they offered a room change, and although I didn't want to pack up at that time of night, they compromised with a room across the hall so I could leave my belongings in the original room.
Room 2: This was similar to the original room with a view into the internal tropical gardens and was of the same standard, again seemed to be similarly recently refreshed, clean and the bed was as comfortable. I would say the bass of the bar below was still audible but to a lesser extent and I was able to sleep with earplugs.
All credit to the night manager (Jenny) who dealt with my concern well and communicated back to me to ensure I knew what was going on. I was also advised I could make a full move for my final night as it would fall on a Saturday and Jenny wanted to ensure there would be no further issues.
Room 3: The hotel kindly upgraded me to a suite which went above and beyond in terms of complaint resolution and it was accepted in the spirit in which it was offered, along with breakfast as an apology for the disruption. The final room of our stay I believe was a Marina Suite and while this afforded more space and a view as had been booked, the overall quality of the room seemed lesser than the original Deluxe Seaview. There were even more maintenance issues and general feel of a room in need of upgrade. For example the bathroom was old with a very marked tub and dated shower head, the bedroom had a blackout curtain that didn't fit properly (facing sunrise no less, meaning incoming light at 5AM), all the lampshades were either marked or torn in some way and an older manual AC system. If I'd have paid for the room I'd have been *very* disappointed. However after 2 changes I didn't really want a further move.
What stood out was the staff, I can honestly say every member I came across was warm, welcoming, personable and professional.
Staying at a Shangri La branded properry comes with cerian expectations. The staff are upkeeping of the Shangri La brand however I cannot say that the same of the room product due to the lack of consistency in the quality and experience.

Hotel sells itself on location, very conveniently located above a heap of restaurants below on the Marina and within a very short and lovely stroll to the main Cairns Esplanade. Hotel staff are all extremely attentive, anything they can do to make the experience better, they will. We had a Horizon Club Room with its own balcony, amazing setting overlooking the Marina, but rooms are very tired. Tolerable but old. Horizon Club Room was well worth the extra $140 (for 5 nights) we paid for it, gave us access to buffet breakfast each morning, drinks and pastries all day and drinks and hot and cold canapés from 5pm - 7pm.

Currently staying in a Horizon room which is just above the bars and restaurants along the promenade. If you intend to go to bed before midnight at the weekend, ensure you request a room at the end, away from where the music from the end restaurant/bar will not disturb you. The hotel is well aware of noise disturbance so be warned. Saying that, we are at the quiet end and so far have not been disturbed and the room is with a large bed, sold wooden base, adjoining seating area with daybed chair and settee. Outside is a large balcony overlooking the marina with two day seats, they do not make a day bed, only seating. No outside fan which in Cairns should have been thought of. The bathroom has a full size bath, a separate shower cubicle as well as a doored toilet. The towels are currently new but not bath sheets, they are the much smaller bath towels. Overall this is not a Shangri la Singapore quality property it's okay but not 5* luxury the brand is known for. I'd put it at a Quality 4* level. The restaurant is like sitting outside and not a fine dining restaurant. That's disappointing but there are several quite good restaurants but nothing like some high end restaurants normally associated with Shangri la. The Horizon breakfast is just about adequate but again nothing like many of the brands other hotels. I've had better in a Marriott club room. Overall I've had nothing to complain about but if you're looking for luxury this is not it!

A luxury resort hotel adjacent to the harbour that also serves as a base for activities in Cairns. The flight from Narita arrived at 5am, which would have been a 2pm check-in, but the front desk let me use the shower at the gym and arranged to let me in at 10pm at no extra charge. The service is as good as the shankurira. The garden may have lacked the luxury of Shangri-La I expected due to its location.

We stayed at this hotel for 5 days in a horizon room. Excellent facility with evening drinks and a great breakfast. The things that make this hotel average are
Firstly there is no room service after 22.00 and the bar stops food service at 21.30. If you are delayed in arriving and are thirsty for a cold beer after a days travelling… forget it.
I was informed the bar shuts late but it shut at 23.00! Not good when you arrive at 22.05.
Not what I’d experienced in other Shangri La venues.
Sadly it’s a little tired also and needs a refurbishment.
The desk staff are helpful and obliging though.
Choose another venue if you know you’re going to be late but if like us it’s out of your control, you’re going to be very hungry and thirsty as the nearby eateries are mostly substandard fast food places

Response from , General Manager at Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns
Responded 2 Sept 2024
Dear 532huwp, Thank you so much for taking the time to pass on your comments about our hotel. I am truly glad that you enjoyed the Horizon experience and the facility. While Room Service does run to from 06.30am until 10pm. Should you arrive later in the evening my team can offer options but most restaurants close their kitchen at 21.30pm. There are options which we would always be more than happy to recommend that are in easy walking distance of the hotel if this suites your needs. Our Lobby Shop can also be opened by the Duty Manager at any time and this carries a range of snacks and beverages, including a range of beer, wine and soft drinks. Warm regards, Ross Miles-Cadman General Manager Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns

The hotel is in a perfect location with marina views (only a 1 minute walk for Barrier Reef day trips!) and there are a number of restaurants in the shopping centre building that the hotel building is part of.
The hotel restaurant and bar, which is independently owned, was really good and offers a number of different options throughout the day. The breakfast buffet was fresh and well stocked but there was always a queue for the single coffee machine that they had.
Whilst the reception staff were helpful, there was (to the best of my recollection) only two counters, so there was often a wait to speak with someone. I have always experienced a more expedient service at other Shangri-La hotels.
The reception area of the hotel was functional but it didn't encourage people to linger there as it was not a social space. It was a little lacking in character. Instead, the design forces people into the bar but that isn't necessarily what people always want to do. Just having a space to be able to sit and talk with someone for ten minutes is always a good hallmark of a reception area.
The walk to my room took me past some function suites and I was a little disappointed to see that they left serving utensils on plates on the tables outside where food is served during events. They had been there for a couple of days before they were used for a function, which didn't seem very hygienic and it looked a mess. I would have expected the tables to be cleared and possibly even some plants or something put on them, rather than my walk to my room being reminiscent of looking like the aftermath of a wedding reception.
The room itself was modern and very clean. The maid service was very good and they even put a note under your door if they have tried several times to clean your room that day but your 'do not disturb' button was pressed, where you was invited to phone through to guest services to re-arrange the same day or to request items for replenishment, like water or towels.
The swimming room was modern and functional but thankfully not overly busy.
I would recommend the Shangri-La and would stay there again but there are a few things that means I would rate it closer to a 4.5 star hotel than a 5 star. Still a prime choice for Cairns, though.

We arrived very early but our room was ready which was really nice. We were in the tower which needs two lifts to get to. The room was clean, modern, spacious and had a fantastic view.
The pool area was nice with plenty of beds and help yourself towels. There’s only one person working on the bar so you can’t get food and drinks when they’re on break 1.30pm to 2pm. it isn’t long but is a surprise when you move from your sunbed and want to place an order for lunch and then have to add on 30 minutes.
Breakfast was fine but I think expensive and also a bit slow checking in when you are paying that day, even though it’s going on the room. There’s an egg chef but I completely missed him on day 1 and hadn’t been told. There’s a sign but it’s hidden behind lots of cutlery.
Gluten free options are limited if you want bread or cake. Just one cake and the bread wasn’t replenished on day 2. There’s a toaster but no toasting bread,
There’s no decaffeinated warm drink options. Even though there’s a tea box saying peppermint, chamomile etc. Staff couldn’t find any. I asked about decaf coffee, they said yes. Then they returned and said it’s an extra 5 dollars. It took ages to make and I’d finished all my food before it arrived, I think this extra charge was poor and it left a bad feeling. The breakfast is 38 dollars to start with.
The hotel is in a great location for trips and a stroll round town. We recommend the Seastar barrier reef trip. We booked tubing which turned into rafting and then was cancelled due to flooding. We also did a Daintree and Cape Tribulation trip but Cape Tribulation is closed and you only find out on the trip that you’re not doing the rainforest.
There are loads of restaurants and cafes close by. There’s a Woolworths in town for food. We liked the Water bar, Salt House and Sisters (Asian). The hotel restaurant menu looked nice, it looked like there was a couple of meetings/celebrations on the nights we were there. Hemingway’s is an impressive building to visit for a drink.
The staff on reception were very good with requests. Also when a fuse blew in our room and when the safe stopped working the staff arrived immediately to fix it.
We really liked the hotel. The breakfast area just needs a bit of improvement.

We spent a brilliant week at the Shangri La. OK it does look a bit tired in places but the location, right on the marina, more than makes up for that. Yes, there are long corridors but we don’t mind walking and it helped work off the calories we consumed while in Cairns. We had a very quiet room with a private balcony, which we really appreciated, and the room also had the biggest shower cubicle we’d ever seen – and a washing line so we had the chance to wash out some of our clothes. Breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice – I loved the fruit loaves, especially the mango and coconut one. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and there is a desk in the lobby where you can book trips out. We will definitely try to stay here again when we return. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

As per my usual November visits to Cairns this was once again a single night prior to and one night post transfer to Lizard Island.
Booking: I had to change arrival dates due to a family issue and this was handled well
Arrival: vis taxi at around 12:30pm. Porter collected my bag as I walked in and it was promptly delivered to my room. 4:30pm visit#2 Bag as above
Check in: quick, efficient and friendly on both occasions .
Rooms: #24 and the #31 Both perfectly adequate. The USB charger is part of the clock. Stay 2 I was worried about Friday night bar noise but this was not an issue. In heavy rains keep the slider closed as both time when I sat on the deck to watch the rain my room became wet inside (this is a Cairns issue, not a Shang issue)
Lounge: as I had booked a HC room access to the lounge was included. It was to have a cool spot to drink a sofa water in th e early afternoon. The evening drinks and canapés included a negroni and several self serve drink options. A previous reviewer noted that people at the evening meal there, yes it's a thing, me included, but after a 3 course lunch, a few dim sum, canape and dips were perfect. I'm not sure if it changes night to night, but some variety may be welcome.
Breakfast: QLD doesn’t save it’s daylight and I am usually up around 5am anyway. I decided to eat in the backyard purely because early both mornings. The selection is OK, but it is far from a gourmet breaky. Perhaps one machine coffee could be included
Check out: quick, easy and yep, Special mention to Alistair loading my bag into the Uber for me.
Pool: Torrential downpours for bot visit meant a walk by only
Location: I love this area as Woolworths and a variety of shops are a skip away. It was also nice to be able to walk around inside due to the wet weather.
Stay again. Yep: it works. The price point between a club room and Flynn wasn't enough to sway me.

I think it was $250 per room for our 2 rooms for a 5-night stay. Don't know if that was $50 per room per night or if the $250 is a fixed amount regardless of the number of nights. I assume that it's a fixed amount.
I think from memory pool hours were 6am - 8pm
