Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Discovery Cairns is a great place to stay. it's cheap, the rooms are very clean, comfortable and has all the basic necessities. Reception staff are polite and helpful, as are their cleaning team. Always happy to help, knowledgeable of the area and are quite jovial - which is fantastic to see in any staff! The property has 2 pools which are a good size, and an on-site restaurant that is great value. The rooms are a decent size, not too big but not tiny either. Housekeeping services the rooms each day so you get fresh towels if you choose, and all tea coffee etc replenished.

Dear EmmyLou; Thank you so much for such a pleasant review. We get great verbal reviews all the time from our guests but it’s especially nice when people go out of their way to write their experience down. Generally (and sadly) it’s the unhappy minority we generally hear from and not the happy majority, so thanks again from all the team here at Discovery Cairns, you’ve made our day!

If you don't need special comfort than you can "drive in". The location is great because you can go by feet to the city center only 15 min.. If you like to make a trip with a ship to the reef and you have not a car, than you can walk only 25 min to the reef terminal to the check-in terminal. I would recommend this hotel for travelers who need no special comfort but clean and a good starting point without a car.

Booked 2 rooms in January for 4 days . Arrived and left 30 minutes later. On arrival the staff were pleasant enough but the room was dark and damp smelling. The windows in the bathroom were open when we wre told there was a protecting cover. As we were feeling the heat we went after 15 minutes for a swim only to find human faeces in the pool. We complained and left the hotel straight away. We called back some 3 hours later and could you believe there were people swimming in the same pool. Disgusting.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am unable to comment on your thoughts about the room as I am really not sure what you mean by a protective cover on the window (I would have loved to discuss this in person with you), however, I am able to say wholeheartedly that we are very sorry you were caught up in a very unfortunate incident on your arrival. At the time of your check-in we had been faced with two very drunken guests (a Groom and his Best Man to be) who in a very short time caused major damage to the inside of their room and soiled areas around our property. This was a very upsetting incident for all staff involved, but fortunately the first (and hopefully the last) of its kind. Further to the ‘pool’ incident, it was definitely closed and pool specialists attended to it immediately; a very costly and inconvenient necessity. The pool was not reopened until it was 100% treated and cleaned to full Workplace, Health and Safety standards. Yes I do agree with you ‘disgusting’ and I cannot understand how people can do such things to other people’s property and businesses. As a family-run business, we do put trust in all our guests that they will respect our property but sometimes, and sadly, this is not always the case. The guests in mention did face the Police and returned to us to confront their actions, however, by this time irreparable damage, such as offence caused to staff and guests such as yourselves, had been done. Again, on behalf of these men, I apologize and sincerely hope that the rest of your stay in Australia was excellent.

we took one look at this room and booked in somewhere else! we were booked in on the first floor-but there wasnt a lift. The room was rather dark and dreary. the bathroom also- and it had slats on the window which you couldnt close, which meant anything could creep in , in the middle of the night. The concrete swimming pool was tiny. The location was ok but still a bit far out from the centre. The staff were quite friendly, but i think even they were embarassed about where they worked!. Essentially, dont go there unless you are a backpacker.

You will not get any frills here and the pool was not even swimable. However, we stayed here only for a place to crash before a very early flight. The front desk staff were very helpful in ordering a cab for us. When we checked in they wanted to charge us an extra $30 for our daughter- although we got a 2 bed room... and were leaving by 3am! That was pretty annoying because we could have paid the extra and stayed at a much nicer hotel. So take note on that policy before booking.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review on our property. We do apologize that one of our pools was out of action on the night you stayed. Unfortunately the filter had to be replaced and for health and safety reasons, we cannot re-open it until the water has re-balanced. We hope you found our second pool. Our Standard room rates are for 1-2 guests per room. A third person charge does apply for the use of extra bedding and amenities; all travel agents are aware of all charges and again, I am sorry that they did not inform you correctly. We do promote ourselves as a hip-pocket friendly hotel so I’m glad you found us ‘Cheap and Cheery’ and overall had a great journey down under.

the staff at reception were very helpful and helped us book a few trips, all of which were great. sadly our room had view of the car park and was next to the laundry. the room was cleaned daily but our sheets were not changed at any point during our 6 night stay - and it had been very warm in our room. the hotel is situated approx 10mins from the harbour area where most of the restaurants can be found and the jetty for booking barrier reef trips.

Thank you kindly for your review. Sadly, unless guests advise us during their stay, we are not aware that they are not happy with their rooms. We are always happy to relocate guests as we can – what suits one person doesn’t always suit another and we understand this. As per our Room Compendiums, on a stay of less than 7 days, bedding is changed weekly unless requested otherwise; we are happy to change the linen daily or more frequently. Our city council is demanding ways that we can use less water – a very hard thing to do in accommodation! We find that this is one way, as is the choice of daily towel changes. Some people are happy to use towels more than once, others aren’t and again, we understand this. So on behalf of all the staff at Discovery Cairns, thank you for staying with us; we do appreciate your comments and wish you a Merry Christmas

My sister, Mrs Lee Rich and I had the great pleasure of staying at the Discovery Cairns Hotel on 14/15th November 2009 while attending a conference at the Cairns Convention Centre. We shared a room which we found very comfortable with the necessary amenties to make our stay enjoyable. We found the room service staff very friendly and over all service in the reception area and dinning area extremely obliging and friendly also. We found the location ideal not too close or too far from the main business area. We thoroughly enjoyed our hearty breakfast both mornings and dinner and the only thing I didn't enjoy which has nothing to do with the hotel and that was the humidity. We were grateful for the air conditioning and fans. Thank you all for a memorable stay. Regards Raellen

Front desk person very rude. On arrival her back towards us and left to wait approx 5 minutes. The room dark and musty smelling. had to request towel etc which was missing. No privacy in the bathroom The place next door could look straight in. No privacy from bedroom people walking past could look straight in unless you covered the window with the heavy drape. breakfast time the male attendant was a grumpy (must have got out of the wrong side of bed.) Signs up saying not recommended to go out at night. In my opinion it looked like the not so nice area of Cairns. Stayed one night and went elsewhere for the rest of my holiday.

Discovery Cairns was a great place to stay for us as we wanted to be able to walk around and not have to hire a car. We stayed for 5 days but wished it was longer. There are so many tours to do and we would have liked longer to laze by the pool. We ate at the restaurant several times and found the food really nice and at good prices. I would recommend this place for anyone who wants good quality affordable accommodation.
