I enjoyed staying in a 4-bed room that had a partition between each bunk. Lots of space in the room (especially compared to the rooms with more bunks). Room had aircon, definitely needed in Cairns! Breakfast was quite nice especially since it’s included/free. There was many different cereals, different type of bread with many spreads, some fruit and occasionally pancakes! Location is superb, a moments walk to the promenade, the lagoon (public pool), all restaurants, and the central stops for the public bus. I really appreciated that there wasn’t a bar attached so noise was kept to a minimum. Though there are drinks offered at 7pm by the staff and guests are welcome to drink, especially out in the balcony, most of those wanting to party have left by 9pm ish. Very easy to chat to people on the balcony to make friends. Offerings of the gym and a hairdryer/straightener was a nice touch. I loved that a bath towel was included - a rarity in most hostels! Staff are nice and helpful :) I’d stay here again for sure
Disliked: Bathrooms definitely were the downfall of the 5-day stay regarding the cleanliness. Showers were 5 stalls and separate to 3 toilet stalls. If you really want minimal noise then ask for a room away from the balcony/communal area/kitchen, which is at one end, and closer to the bathrooms/laundry.

The hostel is perfectly placed best location. Easy to get everywhere in cairns and downstairs is woolies. I had a premium private room. It was very good value.
However the hostel was getting busier with more visitors and and in my view it could now do with a deep clean in the common areas, stairs, kitchen, and all bathrooms. The floors across the hostel need a good scrub and deep clean. The cushions on the balcony for the lounge need replacing.
Also the keys on fluffy key rings for the private bathrooms are extremely unhygienic and should be swapped out for a wipeable key ring or better still the e key operated by phone like the rooms.
The Netflix did not work in the room I had, the back of the remote control was missing and the aircon temp could not be controlled. There is new management so perhaps a detailed audit will be undertaken with these small things being attended to.

i love this hostel so much, i don’t think i will find one better. it is so clean, spacious and bright. it’s mixed vibes in terms of atmosphere; you can easily meet other travellers if you like, but can easily have a quiet night yourself. free goon every night to encourage socialising! and they always have events organised each night, including things such as free BBQ.

freedom is very centrally located, 2 mins from the lagoon, 2 mins from gilligans and across the street from the woolshed if you’re planning on going out at night. i extended my stay here for another 6 nights it was that good.

air con in rooms is AMAZING. they provide towels for you to shower with upon arrival. free breakfast in the mornings. netflix. personal socket, lamp and shelf next to each bed. and the staff are very lovely and helpful. SO CLEAN. there is literally nothing i can fault with this hostel. very good young backpacker vibes for sure.

will definitely stay here again when i return to cairns :)

As per the title. I had a confirmed booking and had provided my arrival time. When I got there reception was dark and locked, I rang the buzzer - no answer. The sign said they were only open for private rooms due to covid, which is what I had booked. I rang the 'Emergency' number on the sign many many times, left several messages. Nobody ever showed up. I ended up booking into a hotel across the road who told me I'm not the first person in the last few weeks who's had this experience with Freedom Hostel! Shocking! You need to close altogether and stop accepting bookings at all OR do it properly and actually let people into the hostel when they've booked and be contactable!

Nice clean, airy and bright hostel. Lots of space and good facilities. The bunk beds each have a plug socket, a shelf and a little light which is handy. There are also lockers in each room (need to bring a lock). Also lots of space in the corridors to sit and take calls which is good, you don't need to disturb your room mates. The staff were really helpful and friendly too.

Couldn't of been more accommodating to us. There was a mix up with the rooms and we were upgrading making our stay so much more enjoyable. The facilities were so so so good for backpackers. And we were lucky enough to be there on Friday when they cook free burgers !!! The staff were so friendly the friendliest staff I've encountered in any hostel throughout my travels in Australia. The hostel was clean and new and had more of a hotel feel to it! Didn't want to leave after the 3 days. Thanks for everything

I had multiple issues with booking with Freedom. I didn't receive an email confirmation of the booking and when I tried calling the admin, the phone is disconnected (both the direct number online and the general hotline doesn't direct). I also sent a website enquiry with no response.

Day of check in, because I haven't received the email confirmation I couldn't access check in and there were no staff on site to ask for assistance or a number to call, so I had to book another hotel so I had a roof over my head for the night. The company then charged me for the night, despite no booking confirmation ever being sent, and because they have no contact option, I couldn't get a hold of them to reimburse my fee. I highly recommend avoiding this place, poor service all around.

My husband and I (we're only 27), stayed here for four nights earlier this week.
Our initial impressions were good. The desk staff on Saturday evening was such a cool guy. (We ended up booking a day trip for the Monday with him through the hostel.)
Freedom is modern and fairly tidy. It needs a thorough clean though, and more regular cleaning of the bathrooms.
The showers are hot and powerful, but the floor is often slimy and I definitely wouldn't walk in and out without my flipflops..
The communal area is pretty cool with plenty of seating, tv, books and games. The outdoor sofas stink.
We had heavy rain during our stay which caused a ceiling window in our dorm room to leak, meaning one person had to change beds. There was a lot of water problems throughout other parts of the hostel. Not ideal!
Freedom holds different activities each evening which is good. We did the pirate bingo evening which was a good laugh.
Our dorm room was pretty comfortable. Messy and manic, but with large lockers, two sockets and a light for each bed. Yay!
Laundry room available for additional fees.
Breakfast is included; very basic but option for pancakes for a couple of hours which are nice.
Freedom is in a really nice part of Cairns, closes to the promenade, pier, restaurants and bars. The night market is also nearby.

Stayed in a premium double room (shared bathroom) for 2 nights. The noise from the street all night was terrible. Made it impossible to sleep even with earplugs in. The doors slam inside as well, which doesn't help. They need to seriously invest in sound insulation.
Don't stay here if you actually want to sleep at night.
Otherwise it was a good location and clean.
Good fast wifi.

I stayed in a private room with a shared bathroom. The room was clean and simple, with a fan. Absolutely no natural light, but you can't have everything and the room was very decent. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Good budget accommodation.
The app key system is a bit odd (you download a app which bluetooths to the locks to open doors) and not great if your phone doesn't have a good battery life.
