Turbot House Hotel is right in town, a block from City Hall and a short walk to train and bus stations. Since moving to the Sunshine Coast a few years ago, when I need to go to Brisbane I take the train, use my headphones and read the paper on the journey. The car stays at home as a minor incident on the highway can hold things up for ages, then there's parking. Going to a few appointments, public transport is easy, and Uber is a good option too.

My room was on the top floor but it's only a three storey building so no river views but the room is bright and overlooks the courts. The room was spotlessly clean and the bathroom is large and fitted with disability support equipment. The usual TV and air conditioning controls and a good mattress and quality pillows make this an enjoyable place to stay. Oh, there's no dining facilities but you're in town, there's lots of places to eat.

Overall, this is a good and inexpensive Brisbane city hotel. The manager is an efficient woman with a friendly style and you won't get a choreographed performance from the corporate accommodation style guide. Within a kilometre you'll find some of the chain accommodation places but if you just need a place to stay the night and don't want to buy shares in a hotel, give the Turbot House Hotel a go.

Room Tip: Rooms on the east side face office blocks and the western side is on Turbot Street which gets busy.

While this hotel has a good location and obviously aims for budget clients it has a few problems. First of all I understand that 'budget queen with mini bathroom' is going to be small but this room is more than small and quite a rough finish. Second the room smelt like 'oil' possibly due to being next to a service alley.. Third there is no guest laundry facility - it was offline?! Location of air con in room not best especially when supplied with only half a light blanket? Did I mention the floor boards creak..

The building was under refurbishment, so no lift available - i was on last floor. The whole hotel was dirty, including the small single room. The window was one of those that cannot be opened - only A/C could be used.
I honestly won't recommend it.

The photographs online do not reflect what the hotel looks like now. The foyer was a worry with the reception desk being enclosed by a wire mesh cage. Why would that be necessary. The front door had one glass side smashed and was replaced by a plywood sheet while we were there.. Front door was therefore not locked at night after staff left.
The room was unbelievably tiny with barely enough room between the foot of the bed and the shelf that supported the tv. There was no chair, microwave or toaster. There were two sachets of coffee, three tea bags and two sachets of sugar, and NO milk. Also two sachets of salt. Why ? These items were not replaced on the second night we were there, neither were the towels replaced nor the room made up. There were two mugs, two glasses - one glass and one plastic, one spoon and a stick. There was no other cutlery or crockery. The TV was terrible, and barely worked without losing volume and pixillating. The "wardrobe" door was missing, the bathroom sliding door had the entire handle missing and was off the runners so it could not be closed. There were no power points that could be used to plug in the kettle except on the shelf where one would normally put clothing.. Our room did not have a window that let in natural light, only a space covered with a mesh grill that looked out on an air shaft where there was two airconditioner compressors which hummed all night. The bathroom was tiny with barely enough room to turn around, but at least we could watch tv while sitting on the toilet. The shower cubicle was a joke - smaller than a phone booth.
On the plus side, the staff were very pleasant although their grasp of the language left a bit to be desired. The bed was comfortable and the linen and bathroom towels were clean. I guess you get what you pay for, but we only chose it for its proximity to Roma St station. We will never stay there again and not only will not recommend it to friends, but actively tell people never to go there.

Stayed 3 nights for magic round weekend. Location is the ONLY positive thing about this place. I don't think the room has ever been vacuumed and when it is cleaned it is done with hospital grade bleach. No tv , black mould on back of bathroom door, no toaster, no window.

I made a reservation at the last minute after finishing a job nearby, from the initial phone calls taking my booking to guiding me through brisbane CBD traffic and organising safe and secure parking the check in process was great.

The hotel looks dated on the outside but once in
the room it was very clean, new and spacious having everything I needed.

The location is great and 2-3 minute walk from everything you need.

On checkout the receptionist kindly organised to meet me at 5.45am for an early check out.

Strongly recommend!

Awful. It seems at one point this was a decent hotel but it’s gone downhill in the last year so previous positive reviews are still higher than the negative on booking platforms. Booked through Agoda, checked in and checked out straight away upon seeing the state of the room. I have travelled the world and stayed in plenty of budget places and this is the first time I have ever been unable to stay a night. Complained to Agoda that they need to remove this listing and also they did not publish my negative review which is why their average score is higher than most platforms. The reviews are also auto ordered in a way to show positive reviews first. Shame on Agoda.

What was wrong:
Whole hotel smelt musty and like cigarette smoke.
I checked in at 9pm and felt so uneasy and that was before I even bumped into anyone.
People staying there did not feel like holiday go-ers. They were long term residents and (I feel terrible saying this) but I got the impression it was a halfway house and the residents gave me junkie/homeless vibes. Either that or I can see dead people because every single person gave me the creeps.
Had to lug my suitcase up 4 flights of wooden stairs and had several encounters with the locals there. Lift was broken but I think I would have been to afraid to use the lift even if it was working.
My room stunk like paint fumes but there was paint peeling off the walls so it wasn’t from paint. I did try to air it out with the aircon and window open but didn’t touch the smell.
Cockroaches and silverfish went running in the bathroom (many).
Based off the other reviews I read I felt I actually got one of the better rooms so I knew there was no point changing rooms.

The after hours manager was understanding when I said I felt too uneasy to stay there and they gave me a refund via Agoda. That is the only positive thing I can say about the place. Even then I was happy to pay $110 to NOT stay there. This place needs to be delisted as a hotel.
Spend an extra $90 a night and go to a decent place where you feel safe.

The hotel is right in the middle of the city. Walking distance to cafes and shops. Late checkin was no problem and the staff and very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and well equipped and the bed was comfy and clean.
The building is old and quirky and could tell some exotic stories. Parking in the city is difficult and expensive, so best leave the car behind. There are grocery shops nearby and a fridge and kettle in the room. Great value for travellers needing a convent and comfortable place to stay. I would stay there again.

I've seen dumpsters I'd rather sleep in than this abomination. Bums hanging around the main entry, cages surrounding the front desk, broken elevator, pee stains on the toilet, moldy grout in the shower, random hairs throughout, electrical outlet hanging above the bed (Installed with duct tape), awful smell... you get the picture. When you're done puking go find another hotel to stay in avoid the inevitable diseases you'll contract by laying your bare skin on any surface in this cesspool.

Walked in, and walked out. They also refused to give me a refund. Claiming their "CCTV" saw me using this trash can for the extent of my booked stay... Someone burn it down and save anyone else from the headache.

I was a little concerned about previous reviews and staying here. But I was pleasantly surprised. I asked for a quiet room so the lovely receptionist actually put me in an upgraded room and it was really quiet for being in the middle of town. Easy walk to Queen Street Mall and all the city has to offer. There does seem to be a few dodgy characters in the street but they are harmless. This is a great value hotel.
