I hate a quirky hotel. I do. And it isn’t like I don’t know this. Back in April of 2023 (reviewed August 2023) I stayed at the Virgin Hotel in Chicago and absolutely hated it. And on this occasion, I ended up at the W Brisbane for essentially the same reason – only reasonably priced upscale hotel in the area during our dates of travel. And just like with the Virgin Chicago, just looking at the pictures on the website told me I would hate it. And I did. It is the sacrifice of functionality for form / design that I can’t stand. The effort to be “cool” and “chic” taking precedence over things in the room actually working or being of value. For example, when you look at the pictures, you see what you think is a weird but stylish bluish-greenish dresser of drawers for storing clothes. Nope – it is a refrigerator. Ok, a little funky, right? Just open the door like any other refrigerator and get on with your refrigeration, right? Nope…the “door” slides out…you know, like a dresser. Ok…stupid…but then you just reach into the refrigerator and grab what you want (or store something or whatever), right? NOPE. Because it isn’t a door, see…it is…essentially…the entire flipin’ functional part of the refrigerator that slides out. It is heavy as hell (the Mrs. could barely move it), and everything is arranged in a vertical fashion, versus shelf like in a normal refrigerator. Imagine a refrigerator laying on its side…and instead of opening a door, you slide the entire innards of the refrigerator out. Just…stupid…inane…for no reason whatsoever. Now think about how hard it would be to reach things in the “back” of the refrigerator, if it were laying on its side and everything was arranged vertically. But it gets better. Because…while the room had the stupid refrigerator disguised as a dresser, what it didn’t have was NEARLY enough storage space for clothes! Just little two drawers and a tiny closet. Just…maddening I get it – I’m not the target guest. And if you like your hotels “quirky” and “funky” and “cool” and “chic”, well, you might love this place. And I will say that unlike the Virgin Chicago, the staff here was pleasant and professional. But, if you are like me and you prefer your hotels to either be luxurious (Four Seasons) or modern and functional and lacking in annoyances (like a nice new Hyatt or Hilton), staying at the W Brisbane will seem torturous. No repeat for me.

Absolutely amazing place to stay. When driving the entrance is on North Quay. Check in was fast and bags delivered to the room promptly. Valet parking excellent. Buffet Breakfast excellent, also seating out on the balcony. Amazing pool and bar. Couldn’t fault anything.

My wife an I really enjoyed our 2-night stay at the W Brisbane. We stayed in a river view suite that was extremely spacious and comfortable. A highlight was having a second half bathroom. The W is well-located on the Brisbane River and adjacent to the CBD, so you have a lot of dining and shopping options just steps away from the hotel. The staff was welcoming and helpful. We'd stay here again when visiting Brisbane.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights at W Brisbane and loved it. We had the Go with the Flow package which included buffet breakfast, valet parking, 2 x cocktails and late checkout at 1pm. We stayed in a “Wonderful Room” which was amazing. The hotel and room are very quirky. The bathroom for gorgeous. All lighting, blinds etc were controlled by buttons. There was a mixology bar. Robes and slippers. All the little things definitely made it all more special. The staff were amazing and went out of their way to help you. They have this team called whatever whenever and you just call them for whatever you need. The room for made up every day which we didn’t expect. I wish I had done the high tea cos it looked amazing. For our last night we decided to go all out and have dinner at their restaurant The Lex. For entree we ordered the kingfish and pork belly which were amazing. Our mains of duck and fish although were delicious the portion size was small and came out over an hour after our entrees. There was an issue between a table celebrating a 70th and the staff which went on for way to long which affect the rest of the customers close by and resulted in the delay in the kitchen. If it wasn’t for this I would have given 5 stars. I would still highly recommend and return. The package is pricy but what you get and the experience is well worth it.

We booked the hotel as it has previously been our favorite when traveling to Brisbane. We have stayed there probably 6-7 times and it’s been AMAZING. This time we were so disappointed. I really wonder if management, chefs, and staff have changed, because it was VASTLY different to the experiences we have had. When we arrived into our $850 per night suite, we noticed that there was a LOT of dust on all table tops and bench tops. Like literally, all of them except the bar area. My boyfriend then went to sit down and noticed all the disgusting creamy, white stains on the couches, throw cushions and most soft surfaces. And I don’t mean just a few, there were MANY. I nearly threw up. Then we went into the bathroom and there was a used tissue or toilet paper on the ground in front of the toilet area. Gross. Anyways, not much to worry about I guess and didn’t want to ruin our afternoon, so I left it. We were also pretty time poor, so I didn’t bother to ring reception, we just agreed not to sit down on anything except the bed. Decided to meet friends at the pool bar quickly before getting ready for the night. We noticed the bar and surroundings were also tired looking, couches super stained, staff weren’t as friendly ( they were busy, so it’s all good, it happens, but was served once and never seen to again) cocktails were very average, food menu very average and nothing like they used to be. Plus, it’s a public bar, so hotel guests have to wait for seating etc, which was super annoying in a rush cause there was no tables available. We thought we should go get ready, so we asked for some cocktails to be sent up to the room, they advised that only cocktails from the in-dining menu could be ordered, and we were not allowed to take our specialty cocktails upstairs. This has not been the case previously as I have taken many cocktails up from the pool bar, even had the staff take them up for me (even half drunk ones), so not sure why that has changed. ….Anyways, head up to the room, order food and skip the cocktails cause they weren’t worth it and as I said, very average, and we noticed a “delivery fee “ for room service!! Yikes, $9 to bring it up a lift. I’m sorry, isn’t the benefit of room service factored into hotel room prices? I’ve never seen that in any hotel. Also, there’s no option to “pick it up from kitchen”. What would they have done had we quizzed them on the options for pick up to save a delivery fee? So, I guess you’re stuck with a delivery service fee. I would have rather left a tip for the delivery staff. I’ve also worked in hotels, and had no idea delivering food to a room is now not part of the job description or part of the hotel service. ….We would have been better to order Uber eats from 10kms away, have fresher, more delicious food. Plus saved a whole lot more money because let me tell you…. $80 for a chicken breast that was tougher than my leather boots, and a KIDS fish and chips, which wasn’t consumed because it smelt like a sanitary bin which was clearly was not safe to eat, is NOT my idea of a delicious dinner. We ate some chips and some broccolini and moved on. As I was getting ready, we heard this extremely high pitched noise coming from within the bathroom. Not knowing what it was and trying to figure it out for 20 minutes, we rang reception to see if someone could check it out for us. A maintenance man arrived and of course the sound stopped. “Perhaps it was the pipes”, he said. Okay, cool no worries…. We were in a rush so We left it, but of course the sound returned once maintenance guy had left, and continued for the time we were there before the party. We got home quite late in the night and I was probably too drunk to notice the sound, however would not have been fun to sleep with had we arrived home earlier and more sober. Additionally, we booked a room with a special offer on the Marriot bonvoy app. It was for breakfast and a room. My partner booked it with our points, and upon arrival they told us breakfast was not included. He thought he made a mistake so went into the app and proceeded to show the check in staff the steps he took using the app which offered the breakfast etc. Apparently, if you use points, it changes it without even informing you, (back to the standard option of room with no breakfast), regardless of us pressing the “breakfast option”. Clearly there is a glitch in the system, however we even showed her the process and she agreed it should have been breakfast included, but yet still denied it on our booking. The lady tried calling her manager to see what they could do for us, only to later call us in the room to let us know that they couldn’t do anything and said, “it sounds like an APP ISSUE”. Okay cool, pass the buck so it’s someone else’s problem. Probably would have been much easier to just honour the breakfast deal (because, let’s be real, It probably costs $10 for people to eat there and then they charge $50, per person, for breakfast!) My suggestion would be: take it up with Marriott Bonvoy, rather than taint the check in for returning customers. Valet prices have gone up too, so ridiculous. The hotel Is expensive enough for no way near the W standards, anymore. -Tired looking hotel -Less than helpful staff -Stained couches -Below average food for expensive restaurant prices -Poolside so busy, no seats, and open to the public -Cocktails most definitely not worth the price -Seems like no one could be bothered doing their job properly -No way near the W standard like others around the world. Extremely disappointed and most likely will not be staying there again. We have the W Sydney, booked for a weekend in two weeks, I sure hope it’s worlds apart from this experience. I wish I took some photos to show, but I wasn’t thinking clearly until after we reflected on it all. So many new hotels in brissy popping up, My suggestion would be to avoid this hotel and Try the Ovolo.

We stayed on 2 different weekends in Sept 2023 (for Brisbane Broncos Final footy). Both stays were in a corner room, which is slightly larger than a normal hotel room and with a decent view. On the first stay, there was an unusual sound in the room. We let the front desk know and was told it was being looked at/been fixed. I asked it be fixed whilst we were out for the footy (we left about 6 pm). Upon our return to the room at 11pm, the sound was still occurring and no update was provided by the front desk. We reached out and advised that it was a plumbing issue and couldn't be fixed. We were offered another room and room key delivered to us at midnight. Normally, I would have just dealt with it and not moved but it was a sound that was non-stop, so we moved room. The new room was smaller (we received a refund in line with room rate differences). Our second stay... brilliant, no issues. Clean and spacious room, great view, helpful and tentive staff. The buffet breakfast has returned and wow... plenty of options, really good quality and a great view. It's really worth it to get breakfast with your stay if possible.

Cool modern motel. Marriott group has upped their game. Awesome modern facilities. Good service. Good food. Psychedelic colour schemes capture a real party vibe. Would be most ideal for hens nights, bucks nights, loved-up-couples or one-night couples. There are plenty of hints littered around from the “18+ Adults Action Pack” through to the pictures on the walls. Amazing views. Has a really cool/happening atmosphere. Surprisingly pet friendly! Our dog was well pampered on arrival, see photos. The dogs get allocated rooms that are different from the non pet-friendly rooms. Nicest place I have stayed in Brisbane. Marriott group has upped their game. They seem to be one of the only quality motels that allow pets to stay. They put my friends little dog up in his own dog bed and brought ‘refreshments’ on a platter! Including dog food and dog biscuits. Quite amazing really. Oh, and it was cool to see Rafael Nadal was staying there during prep for the Australian Open. I entered a lift, and there he was! If its good enough for international sports stars, its good enough for you. Check it out.

My stay at W was very disappointing and I regularly stay at W hotels all over the world. - When I arrived I was told my luggage would be brought to be room within 5 mins but I was waiting 20mins and my luggage hadn’t arrived yet which meant I was late for a meeting. I would have preferred to be told accurately how long the luggage would take to be brought up, if I know it was going to take so long I would have taken it up to the room myself - on the 2nd day of my stay my room was cleaned but not the bathtub, the water was left undrained in the bath and it was not cleaned at all, I had to call concierge to clean it after I got back to the room at night and was asked whether it could be left uncleaned and cleaned the next day and I had to explain I wanted to have a bath that night and that was why it needed to be cleaned that night - the room did not have any bathsalts despite the room having a bath tube and I had to request bathsalts to be brought to the room daily, this was often forgotten and I had to call separately 2 out of the 5 days of the stay to request bath salts - I requested the room to be cleaned at 1pm daily but on the dot of 11am the cleaners would knock on the door to clean the room which is very disturbing to sleep when all I wanted to do when travelling was sleep in when I could

By far the best 5 star hotel in Brisbane. We have stayed in many 5 star hotels across all Australian cities and around the world and this one is right up there with the best of them. We stayed in an 80sq m suite and it was stunning! This hotel is contemporary but not tacky. It offers modern sophistication. Breakfast in The Lex was great. Staff were friendly and efficient. We will be back.
