Detailed Reviews
Friendly, helpful staff who seem to care about their roles in making our stay enjoyable. Rooms are a little tight for space but completely adequate, and nice and clean. Tiled floors in the bedrooms add to the 'clean' feeling and are a great response to Darwin's heat and humidity. Original artworks in the rooms also add to the ambience. The location is not too far from town by Uber (approx $9) or it's a manageable stroll (about 15 mins). The Guest Laundry was a welcome bonus. Breakfast offered basic options that were fresh and covered most tastes. Overall, I'd recommend the Argus for clean, simple accommodation.

We stayed here on 2 occasions recently (a 2 night stay before our National park tours and a 1 night stay after). It seems to make a big difference what room you are in as if I was to rate my experience based on my first room on the 3rd floor, I would rate this 3* but my second experience in a room on the 2nd floor pulled the score up significantly. There was a strange smell in our first room (smelled almost smoky but it does state clearly everywhere that this is a non-smoking hotel). The second room however was much fresher and seemed more modern and bright. Both rooms were large with a small balcony area which was nice in the warm temperatures. The air con was also good quality.
The complimentary breakfast is very basic and would benefit from maybe a wider variety of fresh fruit or some pastries.
Reception were helpful in storing our suitcases before check in and after check out and calling the airport shuttle to book us on.

Recently enjoyed a seven night stay at the Argus. Check in was very efficient - all staff were very pleasant and helpful. The room was very well presented and serviced each day (except Sunday- when rooms are not serviced) to a high standard. The tariff included breakfast which was very adequate and very convenient. on site parking is available for a modest daily fee. Location was excellent - very close to the main centre of Darwin but away from the noise of the main streets.

Budget hotel at best. The hotel had nice beds and pillows. All the floors are tiled and the noise from rooms above and the corridors is awful. It is a budget hotel favoured by tour companies and the hotels puts tour bus groups on the low floors which are noisy from the street. The pool is an oversized spa and isn't nice to sit around. The waterfront, shops, cafes and restaurants are too far away to walk especially at night so taxis are required. The only place to eat within walking distance is a chinese restaurant.

We booked the Argus as part of a package and had a 6 night stay. The room was perfect for us with a nice view. Maybe a little small but it didn't bother us as we were out most of the day. We had a two bedroom room for three adults. Rooms were clean, comfortable with good aircon and two small balcony's. Rooms were tidied each day by the cleaners with beds made and fresh towels.
The complementary breakfast was very handy. Nothing fancy but bread, cereal, juice, fruit, tea and coffee provided with the servery being constantly topped up during breakfast.
$9 per day if you plan to park a car in the hotel carpark. We swam in the pool several times and that was nice with the bubble jets and a shaded area. Pool noodles and towels available also. We didn't use the gym or laundry.
There was no cooking facilities in the room, but there was a fridge and kettle.
Our rooms was close to the lift which you could hear going up and down when it was busy in the mornings.
All staff we came across were very friendly and the 24 hour reception made things very easy checking in and out at 1.30am and 12am respectively. I did email ahead as our flight was due to land late night/ early morning but that's not really necessary thanks to the 24hour reception.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.

Looking for a budget stay for a couple of nights and ended up at Argus. Sure, it's a bare-bones sort of hotel that is increasingly popular and useful for travellers who just need a bed, as was my case. The rooms are modern, spotless and a decent size and the beds comfy and the little kitchenette was useful although not fully equipped. A did have some issues with the WiFi, but after some messing about with my device settings, managed to get it working. The continental breakfast is rudimentary, but sufficient. An easy walk into the CBD. Basic but satisfactory.

Dear Rodeime, Thank you for taking the time to provide a lovely and detailed review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your time with us, and found our amenities sufficient. Please note if you do return, that microwaves, plates, and cutlery are items that are provided on request, as there isn’t a kitchen sink nor cooking facilities. We hope to see you again soon! Warm wishes,

The Argus has lovely staff that greet you at reception and the facilities are small and basic. We had a 2 bedroom room but they were were tiny with no space for amenities in the bathroom. There was a kettle and what used to be a kitchen that would have been fantastic if it had a sink and a microwave. Plenty of room to do so but not there. All night you could hear the lift going up and down. The pool now has a cover and is dark and gloomy situated outside the window of the restaurant… so unless you want to be watched swimming whilst people at eating, not the best place to be. Only a $9 Uber ride to the harbour and there was usually a scooter to hire out the front. Your stay comes with complimentary continental Brekky and which was fresh toast, cereal, yogurt and muesli. Pot coffee was available with no option to upgrade to a proper coffee. Accomodation is suitable if you are after something not too expensive and pretty simple.

I stayed at the Argus Hotel for 5 nights as part of a tour package.
This hotel is located somewhat out of the centre of town, so it is an eight to ten minute walk to the nearest supermarkets, bars and resttaurants, although there is a Chinese place fairly close. I didn't try it so can't comment on quality.
The hotel itself is quite modern.
Rooms are large. Bed was comfortable. There was a small balcony with a view of the distant harbour, and the air-con was efficient.
Not much wardrobe space, but enough for me.
The bathroom was nicely appointed, with good toiletries supplied.
There is a fairly large fridge in the room, along with glasses, mugs and a goodly supply of tea and coffee sachets.
The breakfast is basic continental, with bread (white, brown and fruit toast), plenty of different cereals, yoghurt, some fruit and Danish pastries.
My only complaint about the breakfast, is that the only spreads are jams and marmalade.
I am diabetic, and would have appreciated some cheese at least, or some pate or cold meat.
Not everybody likes sweet stuff.
There is peanut butter and vegemite, but I am allergic to both.
I went to the shops and bought my own cheese for breakfast.
Plenty of tea options and the coffee was very nice.
All in all, I enjoyed my stay at the Argus.
The staff are very pleasant and friendly.
I would certainly stay there again.

I was initially surprised to see a 3* rating for this place, and to be honest, I started writing a poor review, outlining all its minor faults. Then my wife told me how inexpensive it was compared with comparable "big name" properties. Pretty much every petty criticism I'd noted seemed insignificant after that.
It's clean, breakfast is advertised as "light continental" and I found it more substantial than that, with cheery staff and quick replenishment of items.
The pool is small and indoors, not somewhere to "hang out" sipping pina coladas. But, the aircon works, there's enough power outlets to go around and it doesn't seem cramped. Some of the faults: 10ml each of shampoo and body wash aren't enough, room wasn't service within a 4 hour window we were away. Balcony is more style than substance. Need to be closer to the door for WiFi. But... good value!

My stay here was marred by the unnecessarily long check in process involving paperwork that could have been done electronically during the booking process - and my ongoing annoyance at being charged an additional $100 security bond at check in. All in the middle of the night, for a prepaid booking. Was assured the $100 would be refunded the next day, but 5 days later it hasn't been. Phoned the reception to enquire and was told by a rude receptionist that it was my banks problem and that they are entitled to charge this fee "in case I damaged the room". I haven't ever been charged more than a $1 holding fee before, so am not impressed with this "management policy", particularly given the room was prepaid.
The actual room was clean and comfortable, a light breakfast is included which is good value. Parking is an additional charge - it would be very difficult to park here with a large 4WD, the spaces are tiny. I'm really disappointed that the management processes seem to be all about not trusting guests and making staying there a complex process...it's actually a nice hotel that is thoughtfully set up for short stay travellers, but I left with a bad feeling and feel sorry for the night reception staff who have to enforce "policy". Everywhere these days there are signs up about abuse not being tolerated...being combative towards paying customers isn't helpful.

Response from Cathy A, Guest Services / Front Office at Argus Hotel Darwin
Responded 9 Mar 2023
Dear NT_tripper Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback. Our apologies that your visit was not to your expectations. When booking through a 3rd party agent, oftentimes your details are masked, and therefore not onforwarded to the hotel. This is the reason why they are requested by the property on check in. It has been a long-term policy of the property to request a damage deposit on check in and, the following is noted on all booking sites: “A damage deposit of AUD 100 is required on arrival. This will be collected by credit card. You should be reimbursed within 7 days of check-out. Your deposit will be refunded in full via credit card, subject to an inspection of the property.” Payment of the room covers the stay; it doesn’t cover any potential damage that may be caused during that time. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know when there will be an issue, which is why this is requested by all guests. Every hotel has their own policy, and it is very common throughout the industry worldwide. We again apologise for any miscommunications, and are pleased that the rest of your stay wasn’t impacted by this. Please feel free to contact us directly if you should require anything further. Warm wishes,

There is plenty of free parking on the streets around the hotel if you don't want to pay for parking. There is time limits on the street, from memory, free between 5pm and 7a.m.
I see your question has been answered! I only saw the question 4 months after you put it! Parking does not seem to be a problem in Darwin - at least not near the hotel, although I used my feet and public transport as I was visiting from overseas. Great city - hope you enjoyed it.
Hi Lorraine,
Yes we do have parking at an additional cost. Please get in touch with our reservations team and they'd love to assist you with further inquiries.
