Detailed Reviews
Look. Banyan Lodge is a hostel and we probably should review it from the right perspectives.
It is a good hostel in scrotching hot Darwin - not far from the city, yet not close to the pubs. Bus stop right in front of the lodge and CBD is just a 10-15 min walk.
Facilities are reasonably good. It was great that all rooms are air-conditioned with new big-brand air-con's like Mitsubishi and Fujitsu. But everywhere else are not air-con'ed - unisex bathrooms, TV room, kitchen which makes people to stay in their rooms during wet seasons. Hence there are not much social interactions which is a bit of a pity. Sadly I am quite noise-sensitive and I woke up a few times by people walking in the corridor . However I have to stress that this happens quite often in any other hostels around the world. I get what I've paid for. I have noticed one or two "bogan-like" guests walking around the hostel at 9am in the morning - I do recommend you to lock your door and secure your valuables as you do in any other hostels.
Staff are nice and helpful - fellow readers please note that the negative reviews about staff were made in 2009 and most recent reviews gave the great staff high regards. They have demonstrated the friendly Aussie hospitality.
In summary, I think this is a nice hostel in Darwin - not the best I've stayed but definitely up to standard. If you haven't stayed in hostels before then I don't recommend this to you. Else, enjoy your stay!

I had arrived in Darwin with a female companion the night before and stayed in another hostel, but it was absolutely horrendous, so we decided to move. I'm glad we did.
Apparently they don't always let men stay, but because I was with a female it wasn't a problem.
We shared a dorm room with two young guys, who were very well behaved. The dorm consisted of two bunks and lthough it was basic, it was clean and had air conditioning. The overall condition of the hostel was basic, but well maintained and clean.
The kitchen is well sized, clean and had all the facilties we needed.
I would stay here again if I return to Darwin.

I wasn't a big fan of this place.
Firstly, the good parts. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming (worthy of an extra star in the review), and the location was fairly central, with a bus stop outside for those hard to reach places.
Apart from that though, things were lacking a great deal. No atmosphere, interiors were very basic, almost hospital like, the bathroom was disgusting, with horrid toilets and mould on some sinks, the kitchen a bit basic, and the communal area, although offering a nice selection of books and games, a bit of a nothing area, with one computer for poor wired internet.
Didn't use the pool or spa, so can't comment, but I would not be rushing back here if ever back in Darwin. Good staff just can't carry the place alone. It needs refurbishing!

I started serious travelling in 1973. In the subsequent 35 years I have backpacked through Europe, the Middle East, North America, Africa and Asia and have stayed in some very interesting places including the tombs of Matala on Crete, as well as some places not so memorable. By far, the worst experience I have had was at the Banyan View Lodge in Darwin.
We arrived at the Banyan View Lodge in downtown Darwin after five weeks backpacking around Vietnam and Cambodia. It had been a long overnight flight in cattle class. We were tired and our antenna for potential problems was down because, after all, we were back in Australia. We planned to spend a day in Darwin and continue on to Sydney the next day. We had no idea what was ahead to greet us on our first visit to the Top End.
I had spoken to the friendly and helpful receptionist, Laura, of Banyan by phone 33 days before, discussing the rooms available, and booked a “quiet, twin room, and facing garden“. I sent an email repeating the conditions, asking for confirmation and adding “top floor (if possible)”. Confirmation arrived within hours.
Our plane arrived at 6.15am. We hired a car, bought breakfast, ate it down at the wharf, then booked into the Banyan.
The first accusation from the Manager, Belinda, was that the visa card number I gave when I originally booked was invalid. I handed across my card for checking. There were mutterings that one of the figures the girl who had originally taken the details was confusing - the Manager had misread one of the figures. No problem. We were early and prepared to book in and return when our room was available however after some further mutterings the manager said rooms were available and gave us an option of either a double or twin bed room - strange as we had already booked the twin room however we again choose the twin. We have a king bed at home - a double doesn’t allow enough room for me to flail around. My wife asked to see the room ….big mistake. “No one wants to see the room first. This is the best backpacker accommodation in the NT, if not Australia”
Before I realised what happened she had swiped my card for the coming nights accommodation and handed me the receipt for signing. I said I would appreciate the Seniors Discount of 10% that was offered. Second big mistake. She had already swiped the card and “I should have told her before“. ”Show me the Card”. Believe me, I look every year of 61, however, again no problem. With no cash to reimburse me the difference in the room rate, and much louder mutterings, she again took my card and credited my account.
We were given the keys to what turned out to be not the quiet room overlooking the garden and pool area, but the main road. We looked around the lino floored room. It was white where shoes had worn a path around the room and removed the pattern, but dirty elsewhere. It looked like it hadn’t had a good scrub for a long time. It was the same in the corridors. We noted the torn plastic seat cover and smelt the dank odour of mould, stale feet and something not quite definable. But it was backpacker accommodation and although we had stayed in far better places for less money, hopefully the sheets were clean. After listening to the traffic from the main road for awhile we decided to ask for the room we had booked. Yes! That’s right. Another bigger mistake.
I showed her the email with the specific requests and the confirmation. No result. “No I couldn’t have another room as we had sat on the beds. And the staff shouldn’t have promised me such a room as there was no such twin bed room facing the garden.”
I checked the floor plan of the Lodge which was on the wall of one of the floors. It showed the dorms, double and twin rooms. It showed twin rooms facing the garden.
We had a shower, listened to the traffic some more, then decided to cut our losses and find somewhere else. I asked my wife to come with me to book out. I have faced some pretty daunting experiences over the years - a charging bull elephant, attacked by wild boar, a malfunction while skydiving, pub brawls and other stuff but I felt anxious to face her again, alone, and so asked my wife for support. Perhaps her skills as a psychologist, counsellor and family law mediator would come in handy. Nope. The abuse now began in earnest and there was no stopping the Manager.
The Manager was several weeks off having a baby. My wife became very concerned with the Managers agitated state and the effect this stress was having on the baby. Didn’t slow her down at all. For whatever reason the Manager didn’t believe my copy of the email with confirmation and insisted in checking her own emails. OK. I told her we had taken a shower and let’s cut a deal. She sent staff to check the room and then charged us $20.00 for use of the room which we didn’t book and which she wouldn’t let us change. OK.
There was one amusing incident in among all the abuse that was directed at us. Most of our accommodation over the past five weeks had been previously checked against other traveller’s experiences on the web site TripAdvisor. I was wondering where I had seen the pictures and recommendations of Banyan and how I and others could have made such a mistake so asked if Banyan was mentioned on TripAdvisor. I guess all she heard was “Trip” and stated we were accusing her of being on drugs and asked if we thought she should be in a mental hospital. This ramped up the tirade to another level. It was very, very tempting to not deny what she thought she heard.
There was mention of us now trespassing and police being called to get us off her property. From arriving to leaving was one memorable hour. And would you believe outside the office is a sign stating the place has won the NT tourism award for the best backpacker accommodation for 2008. Unbelievable.
As to their advertised “sparkling swimming pool” at hostelbookers.com and hostelworld.com, it was far from that. I have worked in the industry for 30 years and just looking at the water would never have risked my health by going in. They obviously have a laid back attitude to public liability at the Banyan.
There was a guy waiting in line behind us who was witness to it all. As I was leaving I caught a glimpse of his face as she called him to the counter. It reminded me of that episode of Seinfeld and the soup Nazi. NEXT!!
That was enough of Darwin for us. We left and found our quiet accommodation that night 120 kilometres away in a National Park.
I had heard the top end is full of colourful characters. This was one. If you are passing this way, I certainly don’t recommend the Banyan Lodge but do drop in to check out its Manager. Make it sooner rather than later before she suffers apoplexy and you miss seeing the Manager from Hell.

This place would be the worst place I've ever stayed in.Had a terrible vibe to the place.I was a solo traveller and the place did not make me feel comfortable. The TV room stank of cigarette smoke.I occasionally smelt cannabis around the place as the other Hostels I've stayed at don't tolerate that. There were a few dodgy long term 60 year old stayers that didn't make me feel comfortable being around them.Ugly on the outside and inside. Definitely not suitable for backpackers!!The first night there they shut the downstairs TV room at 9pm,which was stupid.I them proceeded to the upstairs TV room only to be told by one of the staff there that no men were allowed in that TV room after 9pm.The place is an absolute joke.Avoid it!!!!

What a terrible welcome for our first day in Australia. Unfortunately our flight from Singapore to Darwin was early and we arrived at 6h30 am.
A lady with a very bad-mood opened the reception at 7h30 and when she saw us, it got worse ! She asked if we were checking out !!!! (the general impression was that she hardly knew the customers occupying her own place)
With a polite smile we replied, no, in fact we are checking-in and we have a reservation but... hardly had the time to finish the sentence.
She pointed an accusing finger to the notice pasted on the window, saying check-in was not before 13 or 14 pm, and that she could not throw out the people from their rooms, just because we happened to be there (friendly isn'it...)
All we wanted to know was if by any chance a room would be available a little earlier. If not, we were perfectly ready to leave our things until the right time.
Afterwards, she opened agressively an ugly and disgusting storage room telling us in a rude manner to leave (dump) our belongings to the floor.
When I saw the state of the room, and the way in which she spoke to us at that moment, I decided instantly not to leave our things behind.
As a result of this very unpleasant welcome, my girlfriend and myself took the decision to avoid staying at the Banyan.
Of course she claimed the money for the room, and the time was 7h45 am...As we are correct people, we paid her cash on the spot.
She still managed to accuse us by saying that we were rude because we were talking our mother tongue (french) in front of her. It was definitely time to leave the place with this terrible welcome.

I stayed 3 nights there and I don't recommend the place. For sure it's possible to find better in Darwin.
Good points :
- staff is relatively helpful
- prices are quite low. I paid $28 for a 3 people bed if i remember.
Bad points (a lot...) :
- no internet inside the hostel
- dodgy people live there (avoid the dorm 3, i saw some creepy things that i would like to forget aha)
- expensive deposit for everything (cutlery, key) and expensive laudry
- kitchen is awful and stove didn t work when i was there.
- store room smells vomit (try it and love it)...
Enjoy your stay :)

Amazing this place must be on the demolition list. It's a I don't give a stuff reaction from staff when pointing out the toilet blockages, loo & hand paper missing and it's just so run down. I would have left but was staying with someone who raved about the place. I think this even changed their mind. Not worth it better places to stay

I originally arrived there in April last year as I was recommended it by a workmate. It was supposed to be a very short term thing whilst I looked for a flat, but I ended up staying for quite a while!
My favourite thing about the place is the relaxed and friendly vibe - it's definately not a party hostel! It was great for me as I'm a bit of a night owl and then TV/social areas are open all night so you can always go somewhere to relax without disturbing your dorm mates (I stayed in a couple of other hostels in town that always close their social areas by 10pm, except for the bar!).
I've seen a few comments on here about having to move rooms a bit if you do stay longer - this is a bit of a pain, but the staff always try and minimise it if you let them know in advance that you want to stay longer! (They get a lot of group bookings that mean that certain rooms are booked at certain times so people do have to change a bit). The plus side of this though is that the rooms get regular deep cleans and you don't get any long termers taking over the whole room with their stuff!
I would definately recommend this hostel to anyone that is coming to Darwin and wants a relaxed vibe - if you're coming to party, this isn't the spot for you! All the bars in town though are within walking distance for when you do want a good night out!
I've actually come back to Darwin again this year - and have checked myself straight back in to the Banyan! :-)
