Mantra on the Esplanade Darwin garners mixed reviews, with its central location and stunning sunset views frequently celebrated by guests. While the hotel's amenities and atmosphere are appreciated by some for their comfort and cleanliness, others are put off by the noise from nearby nightlife. Service is often regarded as subpar, and many visitors find the rooms dated, with cleanliness and temperature control issues. Additional costs for parking and services have led to a consensus that the hotel might not offer the best value for money.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom harbourfront apartment on level 3, for 4 nights prior to a Kimberley cruise. The sunset view was spectacular, and we enjoyed a drink and dinner on our balcony. If you want a better water view, ask for level 5-7, but we were happy with our view.
We really appreciated the extra space, the full kitchen and washing machine and dryer.
We knew there was no daily room service and it was easy to dry our towels each day. Staff provided a clothes airer and extra blankets on request, and they were unfailingly friendly and obliging. We were able to start our cruise with clean clothes, and we appreciated cutting costs and eating healthily at breakfast and lunch, by self catering. There is a large Woolworths and a Coles supermarket both within 400m. For dinner, there were plenty of nearby restaurant options.
Both the corridor on level 3 and our room looked to have been freshly painted, decorated and carpeted, and the kitchen was also quite modern. The bathroom was showing signs of age but was very functional.
There were plenty of bathroom, kitchen and laundry supplies, and if we needed more we only had to ask.
The pool was clean and a good temperature, although it was fairly small and had limited lounges. It was no problem to collect a pool towel from reception as we had to walk through there to get to the pool.
Obviously, it pays to do your research: pay for a Harbourview room if you don’t want noise from the backpacker accommodation at the rear of the hotel. The rooms aren’t serviced daily. If this is important to you, stay elsewhere.

The accommodation itself was fine. However, there were several areas for improvement. Reception staff seemed disinterested in connecting with customers. The room had a strong disinfectant smell that was hard to counteract with fresh air. And the air con in the building was exceedingly cold. I turned off the air con in my suite, but the cold air from the rest of the building still made its way in. The bed linen was light and there were no spare blankets in the suite, which meant for an uncomfortably cold night's sleep.

We stayed here for five nights over the Easter 2022 long weekend. The great things about this hotel:
1) Its location is excellent. A stroll along the Esplanade, the street behind is Mitchell Street with all the restaurants, convenience stores, coffee shops, Coles supermarket
2) the carparking is underground over two levels and is only $15 per day (at time of stay). Easy to navigate the rental car into and out of
3) the swimming pool is marvellous after a long day sightseeing in 35 deg C. Our hotel room had two pool towels sensibly provided. The pool is salt water chlorinated and enough lounge chairs to sit and read
4) our room was large and comfortable. The hotel had left a pass key in the light switch near the door so we could leave the aircon running in our absence. The room has double curtains, needed to block out the strong bright morning sun
5) at time of stay, housekeeping was only provided on day 7 or at time of checkout. This worked fine for us, as we don't need daily housekeeping. The kitchen cupboard had replacement bin liners, so it was easy enough to take full bags to the garbage bins in the basement. The Coles supermarket (when it was open) provided extra supplies such as more soap, tissues, toilet paper, without us having to ask Reception staff (though they did offer).

Notes to self for our next stay:
1) phone the hotel before arrival to see if their restaurant and bar are open at all. Due to Covid-19 and lack of staff, this hotel, a 4 star, didn't have any onsite catering to offer. We obtained takeaway breakfast from Auntie's in Mitchell St and The Coffee Club each morning. Dinner was from My Friend's Kitchen or Coles supermarket
2) never take a room with a city view. The hotel looks onto three backpackers' hostels (all in Mitchell St) so they compete each night with loud DJs and live music till midnight. It's so loud we couldn't sit on our balcony. The harbour view rooms are more expensive and well worth the extra expense, just to sit on your own balcony without someone else's music (and the hostels' pool parties)
3) Darwin city restaurants and major stores such as the supermarkets are firmly shut on public holidays. Tourists are left to their own devices to find meals.

Despite the disadvantages, this is a good hotel for its location and amenities, and we'll stay here again.

Various issues with stay made for a very average experience.

1. Noise and loud music from Backpackers next door until 10pm every night bothered me, locals shouting / fighting with each other in carpark at rear of hotel most nights at any hour midnight to 4am. I was there for work stay 25 days leaving room at 6am daily.
2. I relocated rooms 3 times to get away from this noise problems. (Ocean view rooms put you at the front of the hotel / keeping you away from most of the noises)
3. Airconditioning temperature not controllable in any of the 3 rooms I was in, air Cond fan speed only controllable in either bedroom or living area, temp was adjusted by leaving outside / balcony door left open day and night.
4. Room age was very apparent with fixtures and Bathroom showing age.
5. Water leak in third room made carpet smell and "crunch" under feet.
6. On site restaurant was closed for my full stay and charge back to my room food was only available at Mantra in the city.
7. Onsite undercover parking available at a premium price with limited street and carpark spaces out the front of hotel.
8. Undercover parking has feral cats in it that defecate laving repugnant odor, hotel was attempting to capture them for relocation.

On a positive note.

Staff at both Hotels were very happy and helpful to deal with.
Location was great with Massive public open space directly across the road and plenty of walking paths with fantastic sunset views across the ocean.
Central location with Mitchelle street offering good food and drinking locations along it.
Chemist, and both Coles and Woolworths are about walks 5 min away.

I have stayed previously but NEVER again. I booked for 9 days at $2200.00 which you’d expect some semblance of customer service. Firstly I was informed on check in that I was entitled to a ‘complimentary room service after 7 days’…..yippee I thought…someone will be gracious enough to clean, fresh towels etc and replenish tea/coffee/milk etc. Let’s give them 5 Stars! It gets better. It was interesting to see signs that indicated ‘burnt toast would activate fire alarms’.. the toaster was at least 25 years old with one side inoperable! It took 10 minutes minimum to toast 2 pieces (farcical). I asked reception for a replacement to be told there isn’t any!Early one morning the fire evacuation alarm sounded and you guessed it….someone had burnt their toast on an ancient toaster! There was zero response from minimal staff to direct guests to evacuation points, no floor wardens, no door to door knocking…nothing, nil, zip! There was no one in control and if there was they did a great job of not advertising this. Totally unprofessional and a high risk to guests. I am in the process of lodging an offical complaint with NT Fire Service. In this day and age it is ridiculous to keep blaming ‘Covid’ etc for abysmal room service policies, antiquated cooking utensils and an unprofessional and negligent response to an emergency evacuation situation. Minus 5 is an apt score.

They waited until we had booked in to tell us that the bar and restaurant were permanently closed! The restaurant that was recommended was at Cullen Bay, a 40 minute walk away! Having read the reviews we decided against it.
The view from the room over the sea was spectacular, especially at sunset.
The hotel is fixed in the 1970's.
Hot water was available in the kitchen some days and in the bathroom some days, but never both.
The room is only serviced once during the week so you have to go and ask for coffee, toilet paper and bathroom products.
There is only a thin sheet and cover on the bed so we had to turn the air-conditioning off or freeze all night.
There was a space for the microwave at eye height, but it had been installed down by the floor which made it really hard to operate safely.
Only two bath towels are supplied-no hand towels.
The pool is OK but has no privacy and is open to the street.
What looks like a spa pool is not and there is a notice stuck on it to let you know.
There is no shower near the pool and you have to go in and out through the front hotel entrance as the doors straight from the pool used to go into the bar area.
There is a whiteboard with daily recommendations. That included events that had happened two week previously but did not include things happening this week, (The cocktail festival and the Darwin Cup!).
This room cost us over $700 per night and we stayed for 7 nights. That's the worst value I have ever experienced in my life.
I am an Accor Gold member, but that's the last time I ever stay in an Accor Hotel.

Bathroom unclean, poor room temperature control, room key malfunctioned multiple times - desk clerk impolite insisting it was my fault, “try it again” (finally she brought a master key and admitted the lock was broken). The window was very, very dirty, difficult to see the ocean with any clarity. When you pay for ocean view it is nice to be able to see the ocean. ALL Accor should be ashamed to have their brand on this property, it is not to their standards.

Well appointed apartment in a convenient location. Appreciated the washing machine and dryer, with washing powder supplied, as we checked in after a camping tour! Bathroom included a bath, and kitchenette was equipped with a dishwasher. Living room had plenty of space. So we had everything we needed for a stay of several days. Not having a restaurant or breakfast cafe in house was no issue when there are plenty of options so close, and it was a short walk to the supermarket for supplies.

The room was adequate if not a little dated, lighting could have been better.
The air con was virtually non existent in the room but the corridors were very cold. Air con actually broke down on the second day we were there, corridor walls were running with water and bedroom was very hot and sticky, it did get fixed the same day, but wasn’t noticeably cooler in the bedroom. Disappointed that there were no restaurant facilities on site. Pool was very nice and had a covered area which kept the water and seating at a nice temperature

We stayed here 4 nights. The service is non-existent. They do not have any kind of room service. If you need anything i.e. extra toilet paper, hand towels, bins to be emptied you need to call the reception. The phone in our room was dead. By the way the bins provided were the smallest ones I've seen in my life. If they don't provide daily room service one would think they would provide bigger bins. Our queen bed was two single beds pushed together with extremely short sheets not quite covering the two single beds. We had one measly extremely light throw on the bed to cover with - no quilts for us. Its winter for goodness sake we had to ask for two more throw blankets to keep warm at night. The staff at the reception were nice enough but remote. Also they do not have a guest laundry, or any other service for that matter. All you get for the very steep price you pay is a room with extremely basic amenities. Don't bother to come here unless your are homeless in Darwin.
