I stayed in a room 3 doors down from the Tavern and there were people walking past day and night. The wall next to the path was full glass so I had the curtains closed all the time for privacy, which meant no fresh air. There were fights in the nearby car park on Friday and Saturday nights so I felt uneasy being there, and the noise from the Tavern went on until 1 am. Also, although the room was supposedly cleaned daily, there was a dead cockroach on the bathroom floor for the whole 6 nights I was there. Even after I complained about it and the cleaners came to clean the bathroom, the roach remained! The bedroom floor was not cleaned either. I would NOT stay here again, even though the location is great for walking around the central part of town.

Our balcony room on the 1st floor was dirty - the bathroom floor had not been mopped, blood drips on floor, the handbasin still had previous guest's toothpaste drippings, the carpet was stained, the curtain dirty and part hanging off the rail, the the sheets were old and thin, the bottom sheet had a hole in it and I found a murine vial in the bed. The balcony has never been swept let alone scrubbed, everything was dirty. Location was great but the place needs a total overhaul.

I have stayed many times here over the last 15 years but not much since new management as I find them to be completely unfriendly. I stayed recently, not by choice, and the man at reception was so rude, slapped my keys on the counter and said “Room such and such, ok?” There are 2 levels and 4 buildings and he did not tell me where my room was, say have a nice stay. Nothing. He is the opposite of hospitality. In my room, I scratched from the moment I got there until I got home and threw my clothes in the bin. Get rid of the stinking old carpet for God’s sake. Yes, the location is bang on. But, you need to rip the carpet out, replace the old cushions, fumigate and clean up your act in the service department. We all know accommodation is at a premium in town at the moment, that doesn’t mean you can get away with shocking service. People have memories.

Solid, not fancy but functional rooms. Reception service was very helpful. The location is a big plus, it is very central in the city, close to everything. The cafe adjoining was also very nice, open for breakfast and lunch. I will definitely return.

Due to the unexpected illness of my wife I stayed at The Diplomat for just over a month. The hotel delivers what it promises - Comfortable, clean accommodation in the centre of town. The attached cafe and tavern provide good value meals and the tavern a range of drinks to go with the meals. True Friday night karaoke can be a bit noisy but that is the only issue. What set the Diplomat apart for me was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff from the reception to the housekeeping staff they were all great. I certainly would stay again.
