Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When I heard the location of this hotel I was not impressed. To me it was a run-down sadly neglected part of town, but I must have dozed off for a year or so because this section of the city has suddenly turned into a bit of a cool mecca. The Old Clare is perfectly positioned in the centre of things that happen, and it's got the goods to go with the territory. Eclectic and contemporary, I love a unique stay and I would say this fits the bill. Our loft room was super comfortable and stylish, and the bed was quite heavenly, but it was the little extra touches that really made the stay. Quirky additions to the usual touches show a sense of humour, and some extra thought, and good customer service rounded it out. My only bugbears were the fact I couldn't open a window, not even a

Good renovation of an old building into a charming Boutique Hotel. Nicely appointed room with good furnishings. Nice coffee machine. Modern bathroom. Friendly reception staff. Nice roomtop pool that unfortunately we could not try as it was raining. Close to Central Railway station. Next to shops including supermarket, nice eateries and Daiso

On a wet damp Friday might, a friend and I scampered into The Old Clare Hotel looking for the Lobby Bar. The buzzy sound of conversation, drinks clinking and convivial times, told us where to go. The Bar, in muted shades of burnt yellows and browns was very stylish. The Vespers we enjoyed before dinner were excellent made, each of our two were different as mixed by a different bar mixer, both very enjoyable. A great spot in that happening strip of Kensington St in Chippendale in the south part of Sydney.

So this is going to be a rant as I can not believe that the hotel which is attached to some great restaurants runs such a poor standard of bar. In the first instance the decor is fabulous but that is where it all stops. The service is appalling and especially when it was a Monday night with few patrons. 3 barman basically standing around chatting to each other. One in particular must of put his hands down the front of his pants a dozen times in a short space of time tucking his shirt in. They all looked slightly wired and not surprising as when I asked for a cocktail and the bar tender made double what was required he and one of his co-workers proceeded to drink what was left in front of us. The behaviour was repeated during our short stay in the bar. The Martinis that we

Response from Timo B, General Manager at The Old Clare Hotel
Responded 16 June 2016
Hello janwholeboxndice Apologies, I am a little late to respond. Needless to say I am rather displeased to hear about what transpired during your visit to The Clare Bar. While I will of course try and address this as best I can I should advise that The Clare Bar is run and looked after by the good people at Kensington Street Social, one the, to use your term, great restaurants that share the building with us. Therefore I believe this review would be more adequately placed on their tripadvisor page rather than ours, but I digress. Nothing is further from my mind than palming of responsibility nor any action necessary to rectify this and I have already expressed your and my concerns with Kensington Street Social's Management to address and fix this. It would be great to be able to have a conversation with you and, if your time and inclination allow, may I ask you to contact me. It would be great to talk in person and I believe it could help the Kensington Street Social team in even better addressing this. I am looking forward to talking to you soon. Timo Bures General Manager

This converted brewery and pub is a cool, stylish and slightly quirky place to hang your hat. The designers did a great job renovating the hotel, all areas are stylishly done up and very current. Clean industrial with warm touches that make a stay here enjoyable. My room was really a studio with soaring ceilings and enormous windows, a glassed in shower and a comfortable bed. Staff was accommodating and friendly. Room service was beyond prompt. Literally, my toast and tea were ordered at 7:18 am and arrived before my 7:30 am call. The food is done by Kensington Street Social. Will definitely return!

We visited the Old Clare for a drink however the rooftop (despite being a gorgeous sunny Sydney day) was "closed until Summer". The lower bar was beautifully designed however the bar team could definitely use some more training on their product & service. They were friendly but just not super impressive. Would definitely go again though if only for the surrounds!

I stayed at The Old Clare for 2 nights in March with my Mum and sister. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be coming back. The staff were so friendly and very helpful - nothing was too much trouble. The hotel had a very relaxed vibe and we loved the design. The rooms were well laid out and the use of space was well thought out. We can't wait until the spa is up and running and look forward to checking it out next time we are back in Sydney.

I stayed here for one night in April with a colleague, fantastic rooms, funky space, great bar, awesome service. We've now negotiated a corporate rate for staff traveling from Brisbane to Sydney because we know they'll be taken care of. Highly recommend The Old Clare.

I stayed at the Old Clare when my airbnb reservation went wrong. The room and especially the bed was very comfortable. Had breakfast at their fantastic restaurant and it was delicious. The bar is cool and pumping on the weekends with excellent cocktails and beer on offer.... And last but not least the staff are super friendly and helpful, and also the hotel is very well-located.
