We were older travellers who arrived late at night by Taxi and dumped at kerb side looking for the entry door to what we thought was a Hotel Lobby but was actually the Bar full of late night revellers.
We shouted to a Bar person to enquire how we were to find our Room bookings and she called for the manager who confirmed the room numbers and gave us the key cards.
As there was no Lift we asked her to help get all our bags up 3 flights of stairs as my wife is on a walking stick and frail. Fortunately they sent a strapping young man to do this.
However the stairs were an ongoing issue for the two nights we were there .
The rooms were clean and nicely fitted out with retro fit bathrooms that worked well and the Art Deco wall paper was well done to suit the building age.
The staff were generally helpful and the location is inner city for walking access to shopping and Tram access.

Hotel Bar is almost a Wes Anderson set & I was excited for what was next.
The room was tidy, not clean. The bed table has sticky stuff on it, the sheets weren’t tucked in properly, the cubicle bathroom smelt like urine & didn’t have a proper vent that would get the smell out of the room. The shower curtain had mould growing on it, the bathroom floor was sticky, as was the door handle.
The remaining guests… arguments all through the night, one guest kicking out whom ever else was in their room & screaming fits in the hallway. People coming and going at all hours, none of the doors actually soft close either. If you’re going to stay here bring some bleach & bring some ear plugs.
I feel for the staff, from the wavier you sign they’ve clearly had to put up with some stuff. I hope they sort their cleanliness out.

The building is quite old and the rooms have pros and cons. The rooms are large for a city hotel but the floor boards creak a lot. There are prefabricated bathroom cubes in the room. These have no power sockets inside so beware if you want to use electrical goods in the bathroom. There is also a serious trip hazard entering and leaving the cube as it is a step up and there is a raised rail across the doorway. Good wifi, aircon and TV selection. Bed was comfortable and clean. No fridge or drink making equipment the room. Free coffee in the stairwell if you dont mind the walk.

The 6 of us were very comfortable in a single large room with 4 beds, 2 toilets, and a shower. Yes the shower was a bit cramped but it was clean and totally worth the price. Because it’s in the CBD (great location) you may want ear plugs for sleep, but it didn’t bother us at all. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. We would definitely stay here again.

On the outside the Criterion looks like a old, slightly aged pub but upstairs there are well proportioned and provisioned rooms for the budget conscious traveler.
I had a Single room, which was not cramped, well decorated, huge TV, great bathroom/wet room with excellent facilities. Air conditioning was great, bed extremely comfortable.

Older reviews make the Criterion sound grotty. It's clearly been renovated since then. Rooms have fresh, new, tiny (but perfectly functional bathrooms, it's clear the rooms have been freshly painted and the beds were comfy. In the building some of the original features were beautiful (e.g. original stone stairs with art deco inlay). There was an automatic tea, coffee etc machine in the shared space and (free!) bottles of water in the room.

You don't hear too much from the pub downstairs isn't too noisy, and I stayed on the floor just above it. The location is incredible, truly in the middle of the city. Being so close to Town Hall Station and the light rail meant you could get anywhere very easily. As others say, staff were friendly and wanted to make your stay as comfortable as possible. It is like a hostel in that there is no dedication reception but that didn't really impact on my stay. Note that this is not at all an accessible hotel, so if you have any difficulties with mobility, this is not the place for you.

Myself and a friend stayed here the past weekend for 2 nights, we couldn’t believe how nice the rooms were and how little we paid! Our room had a big tv we could stream our phones to, wireless phone chargers on both bed sides, a great shower and the comfiest bed I have slept in that isn’t my own. Also a complimentary hot chocolate and coffee machine for guests in the lobby! Fresh towels and complimentary water bottles delivered everyday. Our other friends paid double the price for rooms that weren’t half as nice at a big name hotel out of the CBD. The rooms/renovations at the criterion are cute and tasteful. The location is also great - I didn’t pay for one Uber and was able to walk everywhere we needed to go within 15 mins max. The hotel also held our bags when needed to and late checkout was no issue.
Thanks so much! Will definitely be staying here again on the next Sydney trip.

This is an awesome location. So close to public transport. The rooms are nice and clean. beds are really comfortable. Only recommendation would be the addition of tea and coffee making and a small fridge in the room. The coffee machine on the second floor is handy, but carrying a cup of coffee up stairs without a lid is a bit of a worry. Overall, great place to stay. Oh yeah, check in is at 3pm. We tried to check in at 3 and was told 3pm. We could leave our bags there though.

At $283 this represents the worst value I have ever encountered for a room, There was a generator running all night outside the window so bring your own ear plugs. No tea and coffee making facilities in the room but a shared drinks machine in the corridor. The kitchen was not serving any meals. no Breakfast available. the reception which was a bar closed at 10pm and opened at 10 am next day . Laundry bags heaped all over the entrance and to top it all no toilet paper in the room so i had to go and ask for some. The worst views I have ever been subjected to. This was all advertised as DELUX

In September 2023 my husband (Mike Quattlebaum) and I booked this hotel for 2 nights beginning 12/31/23. We were charged $875.00 usd. We booked the hotel through hotels.com. They indicated that the hotel had a no-refund policy and suggested that we take out the insurance hotels.com offered which we did. Less than 24 hours after booking the hotel, I received the news that my cancer had returned. I had been "clean" for 23 years so this was devastating news. We were not going to be traveling. We immediately contacted hotels.com to cancel and get our refund. Hotels.com advised us that we needed to contact the hotel directly which we did. Hotels.com stated that even though we had taken out the insurance it would be up to the hotel to refund our money. After 20 days and several e-mails, we received the response "Unfortunately, all bookings made over the holiday period are non-refundable". We wrote again asking that they please make an exception due to my poor prognosis. I don't even know if I am going to be alive in January 2024! What has happened to good customer service? This hotel has taken our money and has already sold our room so they are not losing any money. They are just being greedy. Please note that we cancelled the reservation within 24 hours of the initial booking. We cancelled in September for a reservation that was not until December 2023. That gave the hotel 3 months notice. It is shameful that they would keep our money. I have never experienced such poor business practices.
