Arguably Sydney’s answer to West Village New York, The Jensen is located in the heart of trendy Potts Point and offers a fresh concept and style of affordable accommodation. Found right among the urban buzz of infamous Macleay Street, our boutique guest house is surrounded by some of Sydney’s most eclectic shops, cafes and restaurants. Once a playground for bohemians, entertainers & modernist architects in the early 20th century, this bustling pocket of Sydney became renowned as the ‘Glittering Mile’ — a red-light strip of neon fantasies, nightclubs, strip shows & 24-hour coffee bars, evolving over the 1960s & 70s. The Jensen Potts Point comes highly recommended as a brilliant location for both short and long term stays. The boutique property is situated on Macleay St, home to many popular delis & dining restaurants, with Kings Cross train station only an 8-minute walk away.

Our group of eight stayed here for six nights during the Women's World Cup. The property is in a nice part of the city with lots of dining options and other handy services (laundry right next door). We found the walk to the soccer stadium very doable but did take an Uber a couple of times to save time. We had three rooms which were fine, but one of them had a window that was painted closed so that room did get stuffy. The shared bathrooms were not a problem for us as there were enough scattered around to keep anyone from being uncomfortable. All in all a nice stay and we felt good value.

Hands down worst nights sleep Ive ever had away from home. I arrived late from an interstate flight. The code I was given to get into the front door didn’t work. I tried half a dozen times. It was night, I was a solo small female and tbh I was starting to feel a little scared. Fortunately someone walked out of the building and let me in. The code to key collection worked and I went upstairs to my room. Now if u have heavy luggage this is not the place for you. Think European hotels with no lifts! Same same! The room itself was nice. Bathroom and toilet are not part of your room. It’s a seperate room. For everyone! Shared. That’s fine unless you get a case of bali belly! I guess this is all due to the age of the building. Renovated and lovely mind you. Problem I had is the bathroom was the door next to my bedroom and with a two inch gap under my door my room was excessively noisy with the opening and banging of all doors and especially the bathroom. That door was on constant rotation. Then I could hear the shower going. All up I think I got no more than 2-3 hours sleep. Only choice is bring ear buds or the hotel should provide them complimentary! Worst night sleep I’ve had in any hotel across the globe. Room was very clean, as were the amenities, staff seemed lovely. In daylight area felt fine. I suspect rather alternative and trendy bring a non Sydneysider myself. At the price and cleanliness I’d recommend but bring good quality ear buds!

I've read the previous reviews and am a bit surprised - it's like buying a Hummer and then whining about the gas mileage. We paid only $399.00AUS for 7 nights and with a rate that low we got exactly what I expected. For me to complain about the place would be absolutely ridiculous...or I would be a complete idiot to expect more after paying so little.

So here is the rundown on the place as it suited me and my 7 year old son. The shared bathrooms is a pain - but, I knew this going in...so I had to make sure that I went with my son everytime his 7 year old bladder had to go...whatever.

Does it need refurbishment - oh yeah! But, that would up the price I suspect...it wasn't terrible. Was it as dirty as the other person said it is? I did not see a cockroach and I suspect that the previous poster was exaggerating greatly for effect. My room was equiped with a sink, mini-fridge and microwave...something that completely surprised me - it was a great way for us to save on meals! So, with food all over the place and a 7 year old dropping crumbs...I saw no bugs - draw your own conclusions.

Location - WOW! Next to a laundry with an internet cafe (slash video rental shop) two doors down and a deli three doors down...it was well situated. Take a left out the front door and walk past the three shops then another left on Challis Street - you will end up in a dog park overlooking Wooloomooloo Bay and a beautiful view of the city. Take the steps down from there and you are AT Wooloomooloo Bay with the Botanic Gardens adjacent. Take a right out the front door and Woolworths grocery store is on the next block (for stocking your fridge) and 4 blocks up is an Indian take away and a pizza joint. Another few blocks and you are at Kings Cross train station. Jeez, it really is a fantastic location! Sure, you could be IN the city but, you can't see amazing views OF the city when you are in it! Also, you'd pay more (something that previous reviewers just don't get). Side note: plenty of gentleman's clubs near the train station...for some reason I did not take my 7 year old boy in.

As far as the noise that another reviewer mentioned - the airlines that fly you into Sydney give you free earplugs on the flights...use them! Geez, any seasoned traveler knows to travel with ear plugs because NO MATTER where you stay you will have noise to deal with. I've stayed at plenty of 5 star hotels in my previous work experience and always used them to drown out elevator noise, other guest traffic and the cleaning staff. That said, yes there was a lot of traffic noise that entered our room...but, we did have a balcony so we were facing the street. I'm sure that interior rooms were nice and quiet.

I bought a phone card at the video shop (along with my internet access) and the desk was very nice to let me use their land line so that I could preserve the minutes on it (pay phones use 10X the number of minutes on the card for some reason)...and I left them with the residual 400 minutes for the next guest in need.

So, if cost is an issue - I definitely recommend this hotel. If you are looking for luxury and amenities then no way. I retired from an airline so I fly for free...but, my new company just went out of business so I flew for free and wanted to spend very little when I got there. Macleays Lodge was perfect for my needs.

I’ve noticed aggressive feedback below and I want to advocate this awesome place. I’ve stayed in the room in March and then In June with my partner.I confirm that WiFi requires attention since it’s too too poor but I’m glad that while I was here, the management has been working on that issue. That’s true that Reception isn’t 24/7 but this is Boutique Hotel for people who aren’t familiar with term, it doesn’t mean luxury all inclusive Conrad by Hilton hotel that’s why don’t expect room service, 24/7 front desk service, towel swans and etc. In addition, beautiful and friendly ladies at the reception go extra miles to ensure that you feel comfortable and like at home. The room isn’t big but stylish if you’d like more space go for room with balcony and you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, which you may find at the reception complimentary, early in the morning looking at the Potts Point. Besides, LOCATION, this is the best, the most convenient location in Sydney! You can walk to Opera House,CBD or get the train to Bondi Beach staying away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Also, Potts Point has a soul and you may be bewitched by the spirit of this area. To sum up, don’t hesitate about the hotel, it’s gem of the area and you can definitely enjoy the time here if you don’t expect more than the hotel positioned itself.
P.S. Jensen Potts Point, thank you for complimentary snacks each time when we switched the room and thank you, the entire small team for being nice and positive every day.

So here are the list of problems that I encountered...none were resolved as you would expect in a poor hotel..
1) NO WiFi
2) No free and working outlets
3) No space for hanging clothes without touching food (unhygienic)
4) No soap in wash basin
5) TV reception spotty for major channels such as ABC
6) Extremely crammed room with hardly any space for luggage
And forget about talking to anyone at the reception... very curt and not there from 7 pm to 9 am

The only good thing going is location but an uncomfortable stay at a good location is just not worth it...

I would love to give this place a positive review because it is a nicely decked out budget friendly hotel in a great location... however we had a fairly negative experience! We booked for 2 nights and requested a cot for our 18month old son. We arrived at about 4pm in the afternoon and checked in after hours as the reception is only open to 3pm. We got to our room and no cot. We attempted to contact the "emergency" after hours assistance via the intercom 7 times with no answer. With no other contact details provided for after hours support we had to create a pillow fort around the single bed in our room so our son didn't fall out which was far from ideal! The next day after a long day out and about we returned to find that both our room keys wouldn't let us into the room! Again we tried the emergency after hours assistance intercom and again no answer. We ended up having to call another hotel that was affiliated with the jensen to come a let us in. We also asked them about the cot and they advised that there was no cot available. So here I am again trying to get my son to sleep in his pillow fort bed for the 2nd night in a row! If your looking for a place with quality service this is not it.

Great location. Clean and comfy room & shared bathroom. We rented room. 305 and has balcony. Well functioned air conditioner. One small thing.. The free parking they mentioned is public parking, and free only from 10 PM to 8 AM. Other than that, happy with the hotel.

I stayed 7 nights in a single room. Just returned from living overseas and I've lived in the area of the hotel for many years previously and the location is the best in Sydney in my opinion. The hotel yes is budget has pleasant common areas and shared bathroom which was clean and fine for me.

Room basic but did have the convenience of a microwave and some plates toaster etc (although I'm not a huge fan of microwave cooking) it saved me eating out so much. Added convenience of Woolworth's supermarket 30 seconds away. Also convenient is the laundromat next door if you're traveling for a long time. Area is full of great restaurants and some bars. Kings Cross (nightlife area) also some strip clubs are very close by (may not suit if you're traveling with children)

Wifi $10 for 500mb for 24 hours or $5 for 1 hour...travelled for 3 years over most of the world and never once had to pay for Wifi....it'd be great if they just included it in the price as $70 for a week does seem a bit of a rip off !! It's done through an external company and I did notice credit disappearing and 24 hours turning into 20 hours etc ! Your credit balance and time remaining is shown each time you sign in.

Rooms are cleaned each 5 days and I did have to ask a couple of times to get it done.
TV didn't work properly although I did report it to the reception I didn't get fixed. Flicking channels and the volume changed the channel and vice versa.
There is some construction going on at the house located directly behind the hotel and there's some noise although it was bearable. Rooms towards the front I imagine would be less affected.

location is next to Woolworth supermarket, about 7 minutes walking to Kings Cross station (with heavy luggage about 10 min). Good mattrasses. Big rooms.

Shared bathroom: only one bathrooms for 6 rooms per level, in the morning every now and then you have to wait or find another bathroom in the building. No elevator available! Small bathroom, no bath tubs.

We had a great deal for only 89 dollar per room for a room with balcony!

We stayed at Macleay Lodge as the rooms cost less than those in the Youth Hostel! We had a nice-sized double room with a comfortable bed and enough warm bedclothes (it can be cool at night in the springtime), which was very quiet at night as it was at the back of the building. It was nice after three weeks of travelling to hang our clothes on hangers in a wardrobe rather than on pegs! In our room we had a fridge, a microwave oven and - the most important gadget! - an electric kettle to boil up water for the complementary tea and coffee. Other tripadvisor members have written that their wastepaper baskets overflowed - well, there was a large notice at reception saying that you could empty your rubbish into the bigger bins on each floor! And surely in this day and age it is not necessary to have fresh towels every day??
We were lucky enough after writing a few e-mails to and fro (they were always answered in a most friendly fashion) to get the only room at the Macleay with an ensuite bathrooom just out on the balcony and to the right. It was well worth the small extra cost! The water was nice and hot and the whole place was - in spite of the fact that the building is fairly ancient! - very clean. The staff at reception were friendly and very helpful (especial thanks to Benoit). The hotel is just round the corner from the 'red light district', which wasn't as ghastly as it sounds. There were plenty of places to eat, even such as were quite cheap, e.g. the Indian take-away just up the road from the hotel. There's a Woolworth's food store a few steps away from the hotel.
Macleay Lodge is near the underground station and bus stops, but it's a lovely walk of about 40 minutes via the Botanical Gardens (fantastic! Look out for the flying foxes!) to Circular Quay and the Opera House. One tip: The Sydney Transport multi-ticket will take you all round Sydney (including the ferries) for A$ 41 + A$ 18 for the airport shuttle. We decided to pay extra to get the airport shuttle from the hotel front door, as we didn't fancy walking any distance with our luggage. My one criticism of the Lodge would be that the lights in the rooms could be brighter; apart from that, it's clean, friendly and great value for money!
