Convenient location for Sydney central and regular bus services up and down Glebe Point Road. However, the rooms at the Alishan are not cleaned well or regularly and there are often cockroaches in the bathrooms and kitchen. Fridges in bedrooms need to be cleaned properly otherwise they smell. The tatami room leaves a lot to be desired, the matting is ragged and worn, the mattresses on the floor are old and stained and one is pushed right up against an electrical socket which I think does not conform with health and safety. The kitchen cupboards are not cleaned thoroughly and there is very old food hanging around in the 'free food' cupboard.

Dogs out the back bark through the night, and there is a children's play centre next door which starts up early.

Manager can be helpful when asked.

I was generally pleased with this place. I stayed here for a few nights and my room was comfortable and spacious, with a great little balcony attached. The shared bathroom and kitchen facilities were clean and basic. The receptionist was really welcoming and helpful, and the whole place had a friendly atmosphere. The location is perfect for Sydney U but it's also a fairly short walk to Central station, and there are lots of quirky little cafes and bookshops just minutes away. I think the Wifi should be free for guests though; this is the first guesthouse i've encountered where it's not.

We liked this place. It was over the top. Just did the job. Basic but had everything you need as a modern day traveller. It was very clean. The location was great so we could explore darling harbour, China town and downtown Sydney.

My family stayed there during new year eve, it’s been a very lovely and comfortable stay for us. The Asian duty manager, I think his name is Vince, made us feel like home. He gave us many recommendation for places to go, restaurants, and best spots for fireworks. We’ll definitely stay here again when we come back.

I have travelled the world for business and for pleasure; stayed in cheap backpackers and 5–star luxury. Never, ever have I experienced what I experienced at this hostel.

The hostel has some good things to recommend itself, namely the proximity to Darling Harbour and the City, the outward appearance of this Victorian mansion and a decent communal kitchen. But that’s where the good things end I’m afraid.

Firstly, and most importantly, is the extremely rude and aggressive manager. It astounds me that anyone ever hired him to run a hospitality establishment. Far from a pleasant “good evening” when I arrived, I was confronted with abruptness, rudeness, scepticism, mistrust, insults and finally aggression … all because I dared to hold the manager to the booking and price that had been agreed (I have never seen a booking that was so completely wrong!). Thankfully it was all clearly laid out in emails that had been sent back and forth proving my position.

When asked if he treated all his guests as he was treating me, he responded with “Yeah, so what?!”. I was forced to ask multiple times for the key to the room for which I had paid, while he showed significant aggression in refusing to hand it to me. After receiving several unjustified personal insults I was finally left to go to my room in tears. Completely unacceptable!

I note that the owner has responded to other bad reviews on this site with defensive comments that blame the guests! They can’t ALL be rude, aggressive or have misrepresented their experience. He does this instead of addressing their concerns and apologising for their experiences. This too is an unacceptable way to run a hostel. In truth it is holding me back from saying more about the shocking behaviour of the manager.

Even if the staff had been halfway to normal, I would still not recommend this hostel:
- Rooms are noisy as sound carries between rooms and from the hallway easily.
- A lot of rooms have skylights – great idea for those who like to wake up at the crack of dawn. If not a room with a skylight, you can pick a room that opens to the main busy street complete with noisy trucks and buses.
- The showers shoot water every way but down and it isn’t very warm.
- Some rooms are very, very tiny.
- The electrics are dodgy in the old part of the hostel; loose wires in lights and overloaded powerpoints.
- The rooms are very cold with only a tiny oil heater provided to warm up the room – okay in the tiny rooms but not the big rooms.
- Thin towels and thin sheets.
- Pathetically small TV.

And if you choose to stay here despite all of these reasons not to, consider that it is very bad value. Down the road you can have a twin ensuite room, with fridge, big flat screen TV and coffee/tea facilities, all for $10 less than a shared room in this hostel. And as a special bonus you get pleasant helpful staff that don’t seem to resent guests interrupting their TV viewing.

You have been warned!

Stayed here for a weekend, woke up on Saturday night to "knock knock knock" on my door at 2am in the morning. Then a man used a key to open my door and come in!!

I said "Excuse me!" and he said sorry and left. OMG. I was staying by myself so you can imagine how scared I was for the rest of the night and I had to put a chair in front of the door to feel a bit better. The door opens to the foot of the bed, so the person was fully in my room. The office is only open 8am to 10.30pm as stated on the door of the office so I didn't call the office I decided to tell the proprietor in the morning.
When I told the hostel host that he had two problems 1. I was upset and 2. Someone has gone and cut a key or stolen a key and is using it to sneak into rooms at night to stay for free. He told me I was lying, that I didn't lock my door, that no-one staying at the hostel fits the description I gave so it couldn't possibly have happened, why didn't I call the office at 2am then, and that I shouldn't worry they probably got the wrong room don't be so worried. OK- so not only did this guy not listen to me-SOMEONE HAS A KEY TO A ROOM THAT ISN'T THEIRS- I was scared out of my wits which he didn't even apologize for and when I suggested he might like to give me a discount he said NO way and was very very rude. Its such a shame because I was having a lovely time and it was a good place to stay for someone that has never been to Sydney, but please don't stay here it is not safe! Have you ever had something like this happen to you? I paid for a safe room to stay the night in and this is not what I got.. So dissapointed and shocked.

As a side note, I totally agree with the rip-off comment from someone else- I saw on a website that you could book their single ensuite rooms for $99 so I just rang the Alishan directly to book one of these rooms- no problem he said- and then as I had to give my credit card details he suddenly said that no only the double rooms were available at $215 per room. Ok I'm not stupid, and then the morning that I was complaining about a man coming into my room he said "no no, couldn't possible be any of our guests it didn't happen, we have like 50 rooms and less than 20 people here... ok no single rooms yeah right..
There is definatly some kind of scam going on here, and if this guy I was dealing with is not the owner-I would be very concerned if I was the owner, he is somehow covering up something and you should never treat another person how he treated me, let alone a paying guest. DO NOT STAY HERE.

We have been operating for 20 years now and this is the first time that we have heard of someone with a key entering a room. Thanks for your information we have made changes to our door locking system. There must be some misunderstanding about the double room with ensuite price it ranges from $115 to $175 depending on the season. As a side note we only have 19 rooms at Alishan Guest House.

I have never lived in such a bad accommodation. smell and messive. There is no room service at all. When I try to take a bath in the so called private shower room, I found there is no towel and towletries at all. I spend $116 per night for an empty room with three beds in and was told to only use one. It is really a terrible experience in Sydney because of this accomodation. Will never visit. If you want to experience disappointment, you can try it once. Good luck.

Very poor service. You would think, as a paying guest, you would at least be treated okay at least. What more can I say? ... Okay, read on...

The day I was meant to check-in, they called and told me that reception will close at 9pm, though on their website and also upon booking - it says that reception hours are until 10.30pm. Would not have minded if it was a courtesy call, but the guy that told me was plain rude, also had no explanation when I explained that we booked because we knew late check-in was available.[Not a great thing to have them call the same day when you need to catch a flight from another State after work!].

If you think service should part of accommodation, you will be disappointed (there is zero service, no smile, not even a 'hello' or welcome either). Upon check-in, the guy at reception was so rude (I think he was the manager!).

Rooms are tiny. Bathroom/ensuite: you cannot open and close the door normally when you use the bathroom - that's how squashy the bathroom is! The place can be loud.

Room was not serviced for the 3-nights we stayed. No new towels, no tissues, no extra toilet paper. Two people were to stay, we were given exactly two towels and two pillows.

Needed an iron, couldn't find it in the 'common room', so went to ask reception. The guy was just sooo bloody rude. Did not get off his backside to help figure out where the iron was, or at least show that he was even bothering to help. (First thing he said in a really rude tone was: 'it is on a computer table.' We came back and said it wasn't there. He just shrugged and said, 'maybe someone took it'.) His attitude really annoyed me.

For people who like to sleep in, it can be noisy as the walls are quite thin. Only good thing was the location, handy near restaurants and cafes. But not worth $135 per night to be honest.

Yes all the private rooms have a small fridge. The two dorm rooms share two large fridges in the common area kitchen.
