Ovolo Woolloomooloo delights many guests with its eclectic decor and refreshing atmosphere, standing out from the conventional hotel experience. While the prime location earns high marks for its proximity to Sydney's attractions, opinions on value are split; some appreciate the complimentary perks and attentive service, but others question the price point given occasional lapses in service and maintenance.
The rooms impress with their spaciousness and unique design, although a few guests suggest a need for more thorough cleaning. Amenities like the free mini bar are popular, even as some travelers regret recent cutbacks.

Detailed Reviews
You know you have arrived at a very cool, young, hip and happening place when you pull up to the hotel. Before you even enter there is a life size connect four, bicycles and a small area for paddle tennis. We were immediately greeted inside by Kevin who took our luggage. For the entire time we were there he was very helpful and extremely friendly, we always enjoyed chatting with him. Service, service, service at this hotel was excellent. A young staff who were always available and ready willing and able to help and just plain happy. So nice to see.
The hotel has an industrial vibe since it was an old wool mill. Very cool interior space. Plenty of areas to sit and chat before going out for the evening, or just hanging in playing pool or video games. There is also a small restaurant but we did not try it. The only downfall for me was the gym (I am using that term liberally). It was located downstairs by the pool area (which was extremely clean and looked inviting even though it was an indoor pool). There was barely any equipment and to make matters worse, it was stifling to work out in there. It didn't seem like there was any air conditioner on or was broken, not too sure. But then again (the reason I did not take off 1 star for this) Sydney is such a walkable city that why do you need a gym anyways, so this isn't a deal breaker. That being said, the location of this hotel cannot be beat. We didn't want to stay in the main part of Sydney therefore choose the Ovolo Woolloomooloo. Perfect location right on the border of the Botanical Gardens, you simply walk out the door and within 5 minutes are at the gardens. We literally walked everyday to Sydney proper through the gardens, only time we used a taxi was for going out to dinner. That also being said there are at least 3 restaurants right next to the hotel if you wanted to stay closer.
Do book directly through the hotel by doing so you get all their "freebies". Which includes a complimentary continental breakfast (just okay), free mini bar (replenished daily, love not ever having to buy water!!!), free happy hour drink, yoga mat in room, and free laundry (came in handy but dryer was not very good). If you like out of the box places this is it, enjoyed our time here and wouldn't hesitate to return!

The building is fantastic - an old Wharf structure where cruise liners used to come in and a lot of the original features are still in place which makes for a rather strange industrial space with a huge central hall onto which all the rooms open and in the middle of which is the bar and the restaurant.
There are a couple of downsides to this funky development. This central area can't be air-conditioned as it is open to at either end so when it's hot outside, even with the huge ceiling fans, it's hot inside. Also, they play loud music in the central areas until midnight, even though all of the rooms open into this atrium, which isn't helpful if you want to go to sleep beforehand. One evening I rang reception at about 11.40pm because there was no-one in the bar or restaurant and so I asked if the music could be turned off, only to be told that company policy meant it wouldn't be turned off until 12!
The rooms look cool and are well appointed with a very comfortable bed and a free minibar. However, the bathrooms are badly designed with totally useless lighting making it impossible to use the bathroom mirror because it was too dark to see! The body lotion is attached to the wall directly under a hook so only someone with skinny fingers can access it, which is a shame as the toiletries are lovely. Our shower was leaking and had been mended with pink plumbers' tape!
There seem to be several instances here where they are wedded to process rather than the guest. At breakfast, the unused tables were noisily cleared around us every morning at about 9.45am even though breakfast didn't' finish until 10.30. There's a very nice indoor pool and gym on the ground floor with large doors opening onto a small patio but the windows are left open all day so when it's boiling outside it's boiling in the pool and the gym and if it's cold it's freezing. We went round closing them only for the staff to reopen them as soon as they noticed.
It's still a lovely hotel and every member of staff we encountered couldn't have been nicer but it wouldn't take much thought to make it a great hotel.

I stayed at one of the residential apartments along this wharf in 2018 where I had use of the hotel facilities, so already knew how stylish Ovolo Wooloomooloo is and was excited to get the full experience in March 2020 for a couple of nights.
Unfortunately this was at the time when Sydney was being closed down due to COVID-19, so all the usual hotel facilities were closed and there were very small number of guests around. In what was clearly a very worrying and uncertain time for the staff, all 3 staff members I dealt with were nothing but friendly, helpful, professional and utterly charming. This is the test of a great hotel.
So to the room. I had a Cityvoo King for 2 nights and I can honestly say it is the best hotel room I've ever stayed in. Spacious, comfortable, quirky and very stylish. It checked all the boxes. There were some cleanliness issues on the shutters (no matter the size or class of hotel, cleaning of external elements always seems to get missed...) but these were resolved very quickly which again is testament to the staff.
And the view from these rooms is wonderful. Sure you don't get the iconic opera house or harbour bridge from this location but it is lovely being so close to water and the view of the city is impressive especially at night.
You will not regret booking here. I'll 100% be back, hopefully sooner than later.

We loved this hotel!! We travel a lot but this Ovolo at Woolloomooloo is truly exceptional. It’s in an amazing converted wool warehouse that hangs over the water in the next bay around from the opera house. To get to town, it’s the most beautiful parkland / coast walk or just five minutes in a cab. The hotel is very contemporary in design and played a fun soundtrack of all of our favourite songs from the 80’s / 90’s / and noughties. The building is stunning and incorporates some of the Woolloomooloo sculpture trail, a site worth seeing in it’s own right.
Our Deluxe King room was big and beautiful with a great view of the marina. We were pleasantly surprised by the free goodie bag, even more surprised by the free mini bar, and blown away with the daily free drink at the bar during guest’s social hour.
We arrived very early after a flight from the UK and the welcome was lovely, we dropped our bags and went for breakfast, explaining we would be back for checkin later. At 10.30, we got a call from the hotel saying that they had rushed through prepping our rooms and we could check in. A lovely surprise after a long flight!!
Woolloomooloo is a fab location and offers a few dining experiences within the same building as the hotel, Ottos is fantastic for a ‘high end’ dining experience if you are treating yourselves. Nearby, there are good delis, cafes, a proper pub, and Sydney central is completely walkable across one of the world’s best parks.

Many years ago I stayed a this property under a different hotel brand, and wasn't too impressed despite the great location for people who want to escape the hectic pace of Sydney CBD yet still stay close enough. The takeover by Ovolo brand is definitely an improvement, with more stylish interior and the Ovolo room perks (free minibar, goodie bag, Alexa). However, the price has gone up too - $400 won't buy you a good room here, unless there's a special offer.
No complaint about my room, except for the shower knobs that somehow forced me to choose between the right temperature and strong water pressure (but not both). Perhaps some of the old infrastructure remains, which needs to be upgraded. The small pool and gym also look the same (except for the addition of cabanas) and shared with the apartment residents. Serious swimmers would better head to Andrew Charlton pool, just a short stroll away.
For those keen on fine dining, there are many options along the wharf (Otto, Kingsley's, China Doll to name a few, and all quite pricey). The hotel restaurant (Alibi) found a way to differentiate by serving elevated vegan food, but the service and balance in portioning could be improved, especially for solo diners.

Couldn't be happier with every part of my stay with Ovolo Woolloomooloo. From the first impressions entering the hotel, service from the Reception, Bar & Breakfast staff and the attention to detail in the room was impeccable.
Looking forward to my next stay!

It was very disappointing to stay at this hotel. We stayed for the Mardi Gras weekend and did not enjoy ourselves at all. We paid over $500 for a very average room which was also no cleaned properly. Decided to visit the pool and after seeing the changing rooms and the cabanas outside, we decided not to use the pool, it was filthy. Mould in the changing rooms, mould on the shower curtain, a dead cockroach in the shower. You wouldn’t use the cabanas outside, mould on the cushions and mould on the fabric. The deck is falling apart and the wall behind the cabanas is crumbling. There is also a large pile of rubbish right next to the cabanas. After seeing this we didn’t use the pool or gym. Again, for the price they charge for the room and claiming to be a 5* hotel, it is unacceptable.
At 6pm, we decided to go to the bar for drinks. The lady with black short hair and glasses was so short fused with everyone including her staff. She was a poor representation of the hotel. We ordered 2 cocktails which looked fabulous but took over 30 minutes to get to us. We had a booking for dinner at 7.30 and we were so looking forward to it until we found out it was 100% vegan. After being super healthy through COVID and wanting to treat ourselves, vegan was not what we were looking for. We asked for the bar menu instead and cancelled our booking. Same in the bar, 100% vegan. Asked if the room service was different and were told that the hotel is 100% vegan. Why is this not properly advertised on your website when making a booking? It is highly unfair to not tell your customers that it is your only offering within the venue. I respect that it is your choice but make it clear. Had we known this, we would NOT have booked at Ovolo. Looking at a few reviews, this is not something new there are many complaints regarding the same issue that clearly the company is refusing to fix.
Our stay was ruined and between a dirty room, pool and gym and a bar and restaurant that only offers vegan food we could not enjoy any of the hotel’s facilities. In essence we paid over $500 for a bed (and a dirty one at that)
I am not one to normally complain or write negative reviews but the experience ruined our entire weekend away.

Hi EssexinOz, Firstly, thank you for highlighting areas of your stay that did not meet the mark and bringing these to our attention. In particular in the days following your stay we have focused on a deep clean on our pool, spa and gym area to bring it back up to its usually spick and span condition. Although the vegetarian and vegan options offered in the hotels outlets may not initially be everyone's first preference, the Ovolo Group have committed to 'Year of the Veg' for a 12 month period from October 2020 to promote more conscious and sustainable eating options. This is advertised on the Ovolo hotels website, Alibi Bar and Kitchen website and information is also found on your confirmation letter. If you do wish to discuss further, please feel free to contact me at Rebecca.hamey@ovolohotels.com Rebecca

We stayed one evening, lovely room, nice and warm, little extras included free mini bar (for our type of room I presume) and a free drink at the bar. The service could have been a little more efficient, but I gather they are just getting back to normal after being closed for three months. The staff were friendly, but there was a misunderstanding regarding check out rate, email said noon, staff said 11am, which caused some problems when we were locked of our room. Overall I would recommend this hotel, although it is quite expensive for its location, and parking cost $65 for overnight stay.

Having paid quite a bit of money for a Luxury Escapes package to celebrate our anniversary, we were extremely disappointed by the overall experience we received. On arrival, a blonde lady checked us in. She seemed to be the manager but needs some training in customer service. Very rushed and abrupt approach. We didn’t feel welcomed. The lifts to the rooms were annoying, our keys had to be changed every time we went out. So annoying. The lifts were very slow. The cleanliness in our room was terrible. The yellow sofa was stained and the threads were coming off everywhere. We found popcorn under the sofa which highlighted the poor standard of cleanliness. In the bathroom, the tiles seemed to have urine stains all over. We tried to ring housekeeping from the phone in the room but it must have rang out 5 or 6 times. The room servicing on day 2 was rushed and nothing was cleaned properly. The minibar was warm so all the drinks inside were at room temperature. We rang for ice but after 45 minutes it had still not arrived so we left. The breakfast was terrible. You’d be served a better breakfast in jail. The ash brown was greasy and the eggs over cooked. The pastries were stale and the coffee machine is like something you’d find at a petrol station. No barista coffee offered.
The « happy hour » is actually just one drink and the choice and quality is again terrible and the food served with it was a joke.
The advertised « all day snacks » are actually a selection of 2 stale lollies next to reception. All the extras that are marketed heavily to make you book are cheap and mean. Our air conditioning unit sounded like a waterfall and prevented us from a good sleep.
This is not a luxury hotel and the experience did not reflect the price we paid. We had stayed at the four seasons for cheaper and received a $100 voucher per day which was so much better value than the Ovolo nasty additions.

This is not a luxury hotel and the experience did not reflect the price we paid. We had stayed at the four seasons for cheaper and received a $100 voucher per day which was so much better value than the Ovolo nasty additions.

Hi IuxuryEscapes, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay, and for highlighting some areas of improvement to work on. In certain apsects I am surprised, as generally our added 'perks' such as minibar, social hour and breakfast are received well. Hopefully we get the chance to welcome you back in the future to turn this experience around Rebecca

Ovolo review
We often stay at the Ovolo Wickham Terrace and have found the service to be outstanding. We booked to stay at Ovolo Woolloomooloo on Friday 12th February expecting a similar standard of service.
Many of the staff provided good service on Friday, especially the woman at the check in counter and those serving afternoon drinks and snacks.
The service and food on Saturday morning was disappointing aspects in multiple ways.
Our booking included breakfast, and I ordered coffee which was did not arrive and I assumed that they were making it. However, as it had not arrived when I was nearly finished my breakfast, I sought someone’s attention and reminded them. I did get it but too late a coffee at breakfast comes first not last.
For a leading hotel the breakfast itself was exceedingly basic. The booking was including breakfast and the room fee was $450/night so I was expecting a quality breakfast. There was no buffet because of covid, only three fixed choices, which is fine. The one I ordered was bubble & squeak. What arrived was an exceedingly basic breakfast - two eggs, a hash brown and a sprinkle of crumbled cheese. It was a standard I would expect from a low tier city café serving a quick $10 weekday breakfast, which was quite disappointing. It’s understandable there is no buffer due to covid but there is no reason why fixed choices for breakfast have to be so basic and small.
When checking out we tried to hand the valet card to the concierge to retrieve the car but they disappeared and so we then gave it to the front desk during checking out process and asked for our car. We then waited outside for 15 minutes and nothing happened other than staff bringing up many cars for people who checked out after us coming. We went back in to ask the front desk and they had completely forgotten to order our car up.
When it arrived, the staff member parked the car in a bay but did so nearly two metres from the kerb. The result was that the driver’s side door opened directly into the lane for the passing traffic and to get to the car required me to physically walk in a traffic lane which is seriously unsafe and just thoughtless on the part of the staff member. Nonetheless the person stood there unconcerned waiting for a tip which was not forthcoming.
Good services requires careful attention to detail and in these instances, there was poor attention to detail and poor service especially considering $450 nightly fee plus an additional fee for the valet. The contrast with the Inchcolm by Ovolo in Brisbane was stark as the staff there provide the best service we have experienced.
The rating reflects the mix of good service one day and poor service and food the second.
