Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I was really nervous due to the reviews, but my stay and room was nothing like the bad reviews and photos.. I guess I just got lucky because my room was really clean, bed was comfy, the staff were very nice and the lobby area was really cool.. On top of that the location was amazing, so close to everything.. I would definitely come back to this hotel when I visit Sydney again.. I have no complains about the bathroom, very clean and great lighting with a good amount of soap and ammenities, but would be nice to have better water pressure.

What a dirty hotel. The carpet in our room was disgusting with many stains. The blanket was also stained. We asked the front desk to replace the blanket and they never did, so, we slept without the blanket. The A/C was noisy all night with blowing and hearing water dripping inside the unit. Elevators smelled like urine, hallways were dark and poorly lit. The only thing this hotel has going for it is that it is in a great location inside Circular Quay with walking distance to restaurants, Harbor Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House. The hotel really needs refurbishment as it is dated and could really use a complete update.

Well.. I was so excited to check in with my daughter and another mother daughter couple. I had booked executive suite rooms 7 months earlier. On arrival to check in we knew it was too early so paid our room deposit and left our luggage to return later in the day. On our return at 2pm as advised, I was give our two rooms keys. I sent our friends to their room and my daughter and I were one level above. I had to ask where the lifts were as the gentleman checking us in didn’t give us those instructions… nor anything about breakfast times or checkout times. Anyway, up we go to level 4… I use the key card to open the door to find the ironing board out and clothes everywhere!!! A lady then quickly rushed to the door . I was shocked! So was she! Her husband quickly putting on a shirt also made his appearance. I explained how I had just been given this room key! She explained that they were there for 2 further nights! So my daughter and I work our luggage went back to reception. Confused gentleman is unsure how this has happened . “What do you mean there’s people in there?” The female manager then comes over (who we had met earlier and she had taken our deposits that morning) She apologised and then gave new room keys. To the room my friend is in!!! I explained again, I don’t want those key, the gentleman’s has JUST checked my friend into that room! It’s occupied, like the last room!! I am fuming! So our option, a basic room, tiny and no view (which I what I booked). I ask what other rooms are available and she explains this is the only room left, and would I like to view it first? I’m not sure why I would view it, as it is the ONLY room left!!!! I literally have NO CHOICE! I am so disappointed and embarrassed that this could happen. Surely when we booked and paid, our room was reserved. So did the other couple get an upgrade into our room?? The facilities- old, mouldy, needs a good dusting and clean behind the furniture! Our key cards stopped working and after returning late had to tell to get the attention of the night shift attendant to get it reactivated. Will never go back! Great location, $hit service!!

We arrived looking for Rydges - which was the hotel I had booked. And being Rydges members, expected this quality. Lobby, promising. But then we got to our room. Sheets stained, black mould in bathroom and cramped accomodation. No tea and coffee making facilities. Pillows marked firm/soft were all the same. The staff were lovely. This venue, well. For the price, the locations great. As for the rest. Cleanliness was sub par

Cons: First, we’ve arrived back home and have to say we too have an outstanding $50 that we have not been refunded after two weeks. We’ve contacted our credit card company to contest the charge. Be mindful of your credit card when you return home. Another reviewer has commented on the same situation. Something is not right here. Secondly, we arrived late, so our taxi driver had a difficult time with no street lighting and finding “Rydges” which is what we booked. We drove up and down the street after flying 15 hours! He finally went in and was told the name had changed 5 days previously. We received no notification? Third, as we entered our room it was clean and had all the amenities we needed, although we could not notice the damp musty smell and the loud AC. It was difficult to sleep, so we had to sleep with earplugs. Fourth, although this property is in a historic location, it was in need of some simple and inexpensiveTLC that would brighten up this very tired hotel. Pros: It was convenient to the cruise terminal since we were boarding a 3 day cruise to NZ. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes that are close, as well as pharmacies, and small grocery stores. Clean and basic needs met.

While it is a good hotel with good rooms, it has a number of negatives. They charge extra for credit cards. Who pays cash? They take an additional deposit of 50$ for extras. But if you have an extra they do not take it out of the 50$ but charge you for it! Then you get the 50$ back as a refund nearly a week later. So if you are there for a week they get the use of your 50$ for nearly two weeks! Apparently there is a reduction for only having a continental breakfast but no-one told me and I paid for full breakfast. I discovered later so rang the hotel. When you ring the hotel you get a choice and then another. I picked the most likely. When it got through there were three conversations but no one talked to me. Eventually I rang off and tried again. Same thing: three conversations, no one talked to me. So I rang reservations. At least she said she would look into it but she would have to ring me back after consulting the restaurant. What the restaurant will tell her, who knows? It was self service including the cooked breakfast. Will I ever see my $8?

The location is peerless, in the very heart of the fascinating old lanes which constitute the Rocks. The proximity to the sights is emphasised by the roof terrace views of the Opera House and Bridge. Cruise passengers find the location to be ideal giving easy access to the terminal. The pool is however tiny and uninviting. The hotel is only of a moderate standard, think UK Premier Inn, comfortable but basic. Everything needs updating and refreshing. The staff perform their basic tasks. Breakfast is a good buffet. On some evenings a basic evening menu is offered but better alternatives abound in the vicinity.

Having stayed at this hotel before a couple of times, we choose this for our 4 day stay over in Sydney for NYE. The hotel is almost on the harbour water front just a couple of streets back from the cruise Terminal and a 15 minute walk around circular quay to the Sydney opera House. In all fairness the hotel is a bit dated, but has all the usual amenities, including a roof top swimming pool, with pool towels provided. we opted for a package without breakfast as there are so many cafes and coffee shops around the harbour and up in the rocks, also it saved a few bob over New year. The rooms are all air conditioned, however it can be quite noisy due to the age. Some rooms we found from previous visits that the windows do not open, he had given one one on arrival but requested that changed us to one that did open. This was 618 on the 6th floor. The lifts also can be a bit slow, particularly in the morning around breakfast time. The rooms are fairly large with a good number of plug points, a desk and a mini fridge, most important if you are travelling around the country. Usual bathroom amenities, plenty of towels etc. a nice touch is if you don’t want your room serviced they will give you a $10 credit to spend on food or in the bar, also ask for the complementary Drinks vouchers, they only give them out if you ask. Its a great base to explore Sydney from, most things are within walking distance including Darling harbour, Don’t forget to visit the Glenmore Arms pub, it has a great roof top bar, good food and is a little secret only the locals know about, apart from me and now everyone that reads this !!!!!.

Room was small but Ok. Close walk to circular Quay and the rocks area. Hotel was well placed to board cruise ship. Good service on checking in. We had a view of Opera house but it wasnt really worth spending the extra money especially if cruise ship is blocking view.
