For generations, the Department of Education building in Sydney’s Sandstone Precinct has stood quietly, its golden facade forming an unassuming backdrop to the rhythm of the city. Reawakening as Capella Sydney in March 2023, the heritage-listed icon will welcome guests inside its walls for the very first time, setting a global benchmark for luxury accommodation, cuisine and cultural immersion. Embedding visitors in the beating heart of the city’s commercial, cultural and hospitality precinct, Capella Sydney also marks the first property under the Capella Hotels and Resorts constellation to open in Australia. Balancing storied architectural features with a contemporary design aesthetic, Capella Sydney celebrates the Australian panorama through its interiors, location and experiences. Spanning eight levels, the 192 guestrooms and suites are anchored by three ground-level food and beverage outlets, with spaces throughout the hotel unfurling to reveal commissioned and collected artworks, sophisticated furnishings and intriguing objet d’art – all within footsteps of the glistening harbour foreshore, the famed Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Occupying an entire city block, encircled by Loftus, Bridge and Young Streets, the building was originally designed by architect George McRae in the Edwardian Baroque style. It first opened for government use in 1915. More than 100 years later, the meticulous restoration sees the building ready to write a new chapter in its history.

Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favourite
This is double review which covers two stays.....
A last minute solo in June and a GD, bub and I in November. (TA has time restrictions for reviews)
Stay 1 with my constant companions - me, myself and I.
After a rough few weeks on the family front involving elder folk, house invasion and generally not having a chance to recharge, I booked Capella around 3pm and jumped in an Uber.
Arrival- swept seamlessly upstairs, checked in and a welcome drink in the living room I was already starting to feel pampered. The hotel has a home away from home boutique feel and the staff go above and beyond.
The room was an upgrade and was perfect. Lots of space, a perfect tub to soak and quiet. Every single aspect was carefully curated. Sleep quality superb.
Dining- Good breakfast options and I love the combination of serve yourself and the a la carte menu. Dinner in 1930 was good, an excellent range of wine by the glass. Service once again the winner. Lunch in Aperture was a little slow but I had plenty of time.
Experiences- I was lucky enough to jump into the Opera House Architecture tour. Thanks to a late check out, there was ample time to enjoy and learn facts about our House I didn't know.
Stay 2- Usually where things all go wrong!
Context:
The country kids were up for a Pearler of a Jam on the weekend so GD took the opportunity to do the Christmas thing with GGS. An overnight stay in the city was the way to go. This the the now adult, that as a 10yo went into FS and Shangri La Sydney as asked what they offered for children before she chose the venue for her first mother and daughter staycation. This has become a tradition..
Pre - Amazing pre connection to ensure our stay went as planned and all we wanted/needed was at hand.
Check In - Man in the red suit was booked for 10:30 so we wanted to bag drop earlier. The poor girl at check in was so apologetic that our room wasn't ready, we were in no hurry so bags stored and baby food fridged we headed out
Phone call and text around 1pm to say the rooms were good to go.
Check in #2 - taken to our rooms I was extremely impressed. Our rooms were 2 steps from one another and I had the same set up as last time. GD and GGS were in an outer view deluxe room, fully set with a bassinet which also had the baby bathing essentials. Unfortunately the bassinet was for an under 4 months. This is where the game changed..... Love the welcome kids treats and the little tent.
We headed down to the living room and were felt very welcome, even with the baby. I mentioned that we needed a larger cot please. Popped upstairs to grab a few things then took over baby duty. GD went to her room and the cot had already been switched... The cot was a high quality bugaboo, not your cheap lets just give them a sleep space.
Dinner offsite as the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
Sleep Quality - GD popped the cot around the corner because, wow mum, the room is completely dark and I could even shower after he was asleep. Sleep quality was so good that I didn't get the 6:00am are you awake message, in fact it was me that messaged, around 7:30 as we had planned breakfast at 7am and there was a last active 8 hours ago on the chat for GD.
Breakfast experience: It was the little things that made for a big experience. A proper and safe high chair, seated in a space that was suitable and the service.
Special mention to the gentleman who went above and beyond (Maitre'D) ensured we had snacks for the baby for the day, a cleaned bib etc.
Food- plenty of it and a really good coffee. This is often a fall down point in hotel breakfasts.
Breakfast somewhat later than scheduled our planned swim was by passed. Check out done, bags stored including more food in the fridge for GGS late in the afternoon. We headed off for the day
Summary - the tipping point for any place is always the staff. The staff at Capella seem to enjoy what they do and this passes onto their guests. We could not have felt more welcome, especially with 10 month dynamo who likes to engage with people.
GD's comment at the end was, Oh, I'm already planning for GSIL birthday, we'll leave GGS with someone, but maybe we should do 2 nights. One with GGS and one without..
As for me... it's a given

AMAZING. We recently had the privilege of staying at Capella Sydney and as a world traveller with experience staying in some of the most extraordinary properties on the planet, Capella delivered on all fronts.
We stayed in a Skyline Twin Room and found the amenities to be excellent. The cleanliness and location of the hotel cannot be faulted and the breakfast offering was extensive and delicious with a great deal of thought obviously having been given to the hand-picking of each offering.
If anyone is considering Capella but discouraged by the lack of Sydney Harbour views, think again. The hotel is located only one and a half blocks easy walk from Circular Quay and stands head and shoulders above any of the Harbour facing hotels relative to quality of experience.
Capella will be our go-to when visiting Sydney in future with the warm, available service making us feel like welcome, valued guests. Thanks Capella Sydney – we think you’re pretty special.

I chose Capella Sydney for our annual mama-daughter trip, and from the moment we stepped through its doors, they knew exactly who the real "boss" was. My 4-year-old was artfully spoiled with thoughtful gifts and delightful surprises. Our room was beautifully prepared, complete with a teepee tent where she savored her platter of sweets and cuddled with Cappy, the resident whale plushie. Meanwhile, I treated myself to the complimentary bottle of Pinot Noir they had thoughtfully laid out—knowing just how to win a mother’s heart :p
A special shout-out to Marc, the General Manager, who greeted us so warmly and ensured our stay was nothing short of magical.

This trip was booked as a romantic getaway, and ended up being somewhat disappointing. Room booked was skyline suite for 3 nights
First of all the positives
- hotel is well located, and easy to get to from the airport, and close to great restaurants and places of interest in wonderful Sydney
- hotel itself is beautiful and the staff are professional
Now for the negatives
- reported a leak from the ceiling with sizeable collection on the floor of the room.
This was cleaned up on request and reported as fixed.
- Also heating in room was not working at all for the entirety of the stay which was a problem after being caught in a Sydney downpour and being shivering and wet on return to the hotel
- leak still ongoing and reported again - this time resulting in engineers wanting prolonged accesses to the room and numerous phone calls interrupting our time and enjoyment. Agreed that engineers could come after we had left the room and work on whatever the issue was whilst we were out. We came back 4 hours later, with the engineers still in the room. We waited outside the room for them to go, and finally went back down to reception who said they would leave immediately. Went back up to the room - engineers still there. Waited a further 10 minutes - and down to reception again to report they were still there. This time reception staff went to the room directly. Reception staff were polite and as a result of the disruption organised some complimentary tea and small sweets to be sent to the room.
- no mention on booking the skyline suite with views of the spectacular Sydney skyline that there was a crane and building works just outside (on Capella property).
Have since been offered an upgraded room if we were to visit again, with an email apology for the inconvenience. This is irrelevant as It’s highly unlikely that we would go back, given that we have had far better overall experiences at hotels in the Sydney CBD at a fraction of the cost of the price at Capella.
In summary - nice hotel, but over priced and similar / better experiences available for considerably less money. Yes - problems do happen but it’s how they are dealt with that matters, and it’s the response that was overall disappointing.

Outstanding boutique hotel, a step above everything else on offer in Sydney CBD. The heritage building has been meticulously restored, every corner of the hotel beautifully curated. We’ve now stayed 4 times, staycation in our own city and can’t wait to return! Jonathan the chief culturist is a gem and always makes us feel so welcome and has introduced us to some amazing experiences that we have thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommend the history tour, Auntie Margret storytelling and the Vivid experience. The living room is a great extension of your room, lovely place to relax and have a coffee. We always enjoy a special cocktail at 5 pm, chatting to staff about our day, they are always so interested. The spa is excellent, I’ve had a number of treatments and highly recommend. I always worry in a hotel that the experience is not so good, however this is next level, consistently good. The spa amenities including steam room and sauna are great, as is the lovely pool and spa area. The service in the restaurant is extremely good, especially at breakfast in the weekends when it can get busy. Breakfast is an abundance of beautiful options, and plenty of GF options. The room are large, very tastefully styled with everything you need to have a very comfortable stay with high end features. Thank you to all the Sydney Capella Team, we are looking forward to returning. Always make sure to check out the cultural immersions on offer, such a wonderful addition to the hotel services.

First visit to the city. Originally planned to stay at a large branded hotel during our stay. Read about the Capella Sydney and made the last minute change to stay here instead. No regrets!
The hotel is within minutes walking distance to the Circular Quay and the sites. It worked out well to access the sites that we were seeing but was nice to be isolated from the more touristy areas.
The building has been expertly restored and the lobby and lighting by studiodrift (?) are a spectacle that can be mesmerizing.
The rooms are nice - our daughters had the double bedded deluxe room and was spacious. The only complaints was that our room was a king deluxe (Rm 2033) that was much smaller. This made the bathroom with the tub quite cramped. The bed had a topper that made it a bit soft for our liking but the staff was eager to get this sorted for us after the first night.
The housekeeping was exceptional and provided turn down service in the evening. They also provided something each evening eg aromatherapy mist for the pillows.
Breakfast was included each morning and offered a well stocked buffet as well as some ala carte items. Nice to be able to enjoy a proper flat white each morning !
What made the stay memorable was the exceptional service from day one. The staff was alway available, friendly but professional and eager to help out. We had arrived 8am after a 15 hour flight from LAX and obviously our rooms were not available. However, the your lady (forgot her name) was able to get us access to their spa/gym lockers to shower and clean up after the long flight. The shower areas had nice robes and shower amenities.
The bellmen were always friendly and eager to help or offer a warm greeting on return. Shout out to Josh for helping deliver our luggages on arrival and departure.
Bottom line: would definitely stay again at the Capella Sydney on our return to the city.

Fabulous conversion of the former Department of Education building
The room was spotless with a very comfortable bed and wrap around floor-to-ceiling windows
Breakfast buffet was excellent with a full set of al la carte options all served with care and efficiency. Room service options more limited
Excellent central location meant we walked everywhere during our stay including to the opera house and the Rocks area
Relaxing guest lounge with barista coffee service and pool with spa option
Very much worth the stay.

Another fantastic stay at Capella Sydney. From the minute I walked in until leaving the service, atmosphere and food was all fantastic. A quick safe stroll to and from the Opera house - can totally recommend as a location to stay if attending the Opera.

Impeccable. Capella is an urban oasis in a kinetic city. The beautifully designed well thought out spaces incorporate meticulous attention to detail. The environment throughout is top quality but not stuffy. It is a bit like staying in an accessible art gallery.
Capella renovated a beautiful old Sydney treasure, blending old with the new to create a welcoming, relaxing environment, both public and private, that is culturally respectful.
The location is excellent, an easy walk to the circular quay, trains, ferries, restaurants, opera house, botanical gardens, National Library (nice bookstore in this public space). The monthly complimentary events are another plus, also high quality. My stay coincided with Lunar New Year events, an excellent guided history walk & more. The rooms, while primarily urban facing (re: views) are beautifully appointed, incredibly comfortable and intuitively programmed. I visited twice, staying a total of 7 nights and was still appreciating details at the end. The pools (lap and spa) made for a daily ritual. The team of staff throughout are professional, friendly, and management took the time to meet, greet. As mentioned by others, the concierges from pre-arrival throughout, offer helpful individualized resources. Loved the dining recommendations. A special call out and thanks to Sam.

We recently visited Aperture Lounge for high tea at Capella Hotel. This was by far the best high tea we have experienced in Sydney. The high tea is designed as a degustation (Smaller Dishes) but this makes it very unique to any other in Sydney.
A special thanks to Chef Adrian for the amazing food and Kwang who looked after us during our high tea. I must mention some great attention to detail from Kwang, I actually sneezed and Kwang, straight away just brought over some tissues for me. That is truly eye for detail and showed the quality of staff of Aperture. We would highly recommend the high tea at Aperture to anyone.
P.S the scones were the best I have ever had. So fluffy, soft and they just melt in your mouth.
Well done again to all the team at Aperture for making our experience truly memorable.
