For generations, the Department of Education building in Sydney’s Sandstone Precinct has stood quietly, its golden facade forming an unassuming backdrop to the rhythm of the city. Reawakening as Capella Sydney in March 2023, the heritage-listed icon will welcome guests inside its walls for the very first time, setting a global benchmark for luxury accommodation, cuisine and cultural immersion. Embedding visitors in the beating heart of the city’s commercial, cultural and hospitality precinct, Capella Sydney also marks the first property under the Capella Hotels and Resorts constellation to open in Australia. Balancing storied architectural features with a contemporary design aesthetic, Capella Sydney celebrates the Australian panorama through its interiors, location and experiences. Spanning eight levels, the 192 guestrooms and suites are anchored by three ground-level food and beverage outlets, with spaces throughout the hotel unfurling to reveal commissioned and collected artworks, sophisticated furnishings and intriguing objet d’art – all within footsteps of the glistening harbour foreshore, the famed Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Occupying an entire city block, encircled by Loftus, Bridge and Young Streets, the building was originally designed by architect George McRae in the Edwardian Baroque style. It first opened for government use in 1915. More than 100 years later, the meticulous restoration sees the building ready to write a new chapter in its history.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you are still hesitant about where you are going to stay in Sydney, please spare a few minutes for reading my review. I can reassure you that you will never regret making this decision. I simply list 10 reasons (without any specific orders) for my recommendation: (1) An amazing indoor swimming pool with a very comfortable jacuzzi, coupled with a well-equipped gym room (2) Free cocktail in the Living Room - feel free to walk in for a cup of tea and some snacks anytime (3) Free bike rental service - to ride around Circular Quay enjoying the spectacular view and taking Instagrammable photos (4) Very beautiful architectural design and interior design of the bedrooms - amazingly natural integration of modern & heritage elements (5) Very fulfilling breakfast & drinks every morning - that’s the motivation of waking up early! (6) Pre-arrival preparation: The Culturist team member Jonathan answered my questions in detail. He offered me lots of tailor-made and personal recommendations for high-quality restaurants and attractions. Do read the PDF files for travel tips when planning. (7) Hospitable Service: One of my family members was sick on the first day. Spotting the tissue papers in the bin, the room service staff offered us some soothing oil for free as surprise. We were very touched and amazed. This is just one of the many examples of how well they attended to our needs. (8) ✨ Lots of cultural activities ✨ That’s how Capella Sydney stands out from other hotels. Many cultural activities were arranged for free, allowing us to have lots of interaction with other guests and the staff. We joined the Architecture Walk, the Tea Ceremony (during Chinese New Year) and the Visit to Carriageworks Market. We regret not having enough time to join the rest. They offer different activities every month. Do check this out. (9) Vitality Run: Never have I thought of running with the Culturist team member Luke early in the morning along the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Lots of interactions during the run (10) I have been to many five-star hotels all over the world. I am always eager to try new hotels for brand new experience when I travel. Yet, Capella Sydney is the only exception - I will come back again and again when I travel to Sydney. I hope my review will help you make up your mind to make the reservation now since this is definitely an elevated travelling experience you should never miss!

What a beautiful hotel! The public areas are bright and spacious with incredible artwork. Our room was super comfortable and all of the staff attentive and charming. Fabulous breakfast too. We thoroughly recommend this hotel and will look for opportunities to visit again.

Understated luxury, impeccable service, good location, comfortable rooms, great food/drinks... Kindda like Aman, without the attitude and hefty price. What more would a traveler want? This place has it all and more. It's our new fav hotel in Sydney, so much, we'll definitely seek to stay at other Capella hotels in the future.

My wife and 2 adult daughters came to Sydney to visit our youngest daughter who was studying abroad Sydney for a 2 night stay. The rooms were terrific - spacious and thoughtfully designed. The Capella features a 'living room' which is essentially a club floor experience located on the lobby level and is available for all guests. Complimentary Coffee, Tea, soft drinks, beer, wine were always available and expertly served by hotel staff. Breakfast was quite well done with a great selection at the buffet and the option to order a la carte from the menu A specific shout out to Assistant Front Office Manager Miles Kable. Miles saw to it that we were able to check in early as we arrived in Sydney early in the morning from the US. He was also kind enough to arrange a room upgrade and left a small fruit platter in our room, welcoming us to the Capella and Sydney.

Very luxurious and a beautiful building. Loved the architecture of the place. Inside oozes class and good vibes. The service was ok but nothing special. Could have been better. Restaurant good but prices are exaggerated. All in all a great place to stay to treat yourself

We stayed at the Capella for 4 nights! Our experience was absolutely fantastic! The breakfast was delicious and we had dinner at the hotel restaurant which was excellent! Servers were amazing and food was outstanding. The rooms are very comfortable from the beautiful linens to the ipad which controls everything to the Dyson hairdryer! The fitness room was great too! Finally, I need to share that all the staff are so nice and helpful. A special shout out to Peter who was so kind when we arrived without our luggage. He actually found us in the restaurant the night we arrived to let us know that the flight- which supposedly had our luggage- had landed! Allan from the Concierge desk was also very helpful. I would come back in a heartbeat! Thank you so much for making our trip to Australia so memorable!

We stayed here in December 2023. And it was truly magical, not only was the hotel beautiful and in a great location, the rooms were off the charts awesome. Huge, backout curtains, the bathroom was huge. And the AC worked great. But the service was even better. I asked for ice the first night, and then each night when they did turndown service, I had ice in my room. The food outlets were great. We stayed for 4 nights and there is not a single thing I could say that they could have done better. It is also close to everything. The ONLY thing it doesn't have is views to the bridge or opera house.

Lovely modern hotel. Great breakfast. Great rooms, and very generous with the free non alcoholic drinks in the room and all the goodie’s every day delivered to rooms. Very clean an modern and ideal place as it is 5 mins walk to Darling Harbour and public transport. Could not fault really but the only thing which was disappointing to us was the free drinks at 5pm. Was told no room in the area for us that night….They could of serve the drink in other areas if they had no room, anyway that was that. And the night we did go I thought they were a bit mean with the nibs and drinks, I am the sort of person of that offers something for free I am generous with it, not do it begrudgingly or halve heartedly.
