Highly recommend staying here, great location, yep the stairs up from Circular Quay are annoying (apparently there is an elevator at George St but we didn’t see it), but the view is worth it. We had queen plus single ensuite room, it was big, clean and the shower was large. Good facilities, breakfast available and snacks all day from cafe. Food and drinks at rooftop were fabulous, highly recommend spending time up there. We’re not young travellers and were surprised at the mix of ages and people staying, everything from young backpackers, families, retirees and everyone in between. Follow their instructions and get off at Wynyard station (maps will tell you circular quay) onto York street turn left cross over the other side of York street and keep walking there’s no stairs this way! Staff were friendly and helpful and the happy hour on the balcony watching the sunset over opera house was awesome. Will be back.

Hey there! Thank you so much for your fantastic review! We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed our location, the spacious and clean room, and the great amenities we offer. It's great that you took advantage of the rooftop views, happy hour, and food & drinks – it really is a special place to unwind and take in the sunset! We had an excellent stay in this youth hostel which is still more like a hotel with excellent services. The rooms are renovated and comfortable, the bedding is of very good quality. The showers have fixed heads and little pressure, this is perhaps the only downside of the stay. On the other hand, the location is great, being a ten minute walk from Circular Quay (with a big hill and stairs). A laundry and luggage storage service is available and allows you to store even very large luggage. I recommend !

A group of 42 young Danish Gymnasts age 18-28 stayed here and really enjoyed the fine facilities, the exceptional location and the high level of service.

I recommend the rooftop terrasse with view directly to the Operahouse.

The signs telling stories about the Rock are filled with interesting facts about the convicts story.

Hi Larsh, We are glad your group of 42 found the service here at YHA Sydney Harbour to be exceptional and enjoyed the facilities we have here on offer. We're also glad you loved the rooftop and it's spectacular views - some of the best in Syndey! The history of the site we are on is also often look passed but it adds a unique experience to our guests. Theres so much to explore and experience at the Rocks where we are based and it's great to hear you valued that during your stay with us. We hope to see you again soon! Kind regards, Nathan Gasson, Shift Manager, Sydney Harbour YHA

I stayed at the YHA Sydney Harbour - The Rocks for a week over New Years and noticed both positive and negative aspects. First of all, I was thrilled by the view from the rooftop with a direct view of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge - it's really unique! The hostel has an excellent location, is easy to reach from everywhere on foot and is close to the city center. The staff always tried to do their best and were very friendly. The hostel is large, clean, offers rooms of various sizes, has a spacious kitchen and common areas as well as the beautiful rooftop mentioned above.

As a younger visitor (20 years old), I unfortunately noticed one major negative point: At the YHA you meet more families with older children or generally older adults (over 30). Unfortunately, this means that the YHA is not one of the social hostels where younger adults/teenagers can network with each other. I can only explain this because it is one of the few hostels with no age restrictions and the prices are on the higher end, which makes it difficult for younger adults to afford. In my case, 7 nights over New Year in the cheapest 6-bed mixed room cost me A$1557, or almost A$223 per night. In my opinion, this is absolutely not in line with the values of a youth hostel, as I believe that the prices have to be adjusted so that a youth hostel can also be afforded by teenagers/young adults! Unfortunately, this is usually not the case with the YHA Sydney Harbour.

As of now, and unless the prices change much, I would recommend anyone under 30 to look for another hostel and save the money for other activities (there are enough hostel alternatives in Sydney). However, I can highly recommend the hostel to anyone over 30 and those who want to treat themselves because of the great location and the unique rooftop!

Great location in the Rocks or old Sydney. Good basic private room with firm bedding and private bath. Not inexpensive but quiet.
Rooms with a view aren't worth it since the view of the (faraway) Opera is almost always obstructed by ugly monstruous cruise ships in front of it.
UNREAL! Can't believe the city of Sydney allows this!
You can see the (obstructed) Opera from the YHA topfloor terrace, or walk down about 6 blocks to the Opera itself. Also, to visit the Opera, buy an inexpensive concert or play ticket, rather than the expensive tour.
In the summer, the musicals on the outside floating stage by the Botanical Garden are just great (Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour). All seats are good and have a view of the Sydney Opera in the background, and there are fireworks at intermission. Well worth it. ( Check the weather carefully because show goes on even if it rains!!! ).And, last, ferries from Circular Quay are a fun, practical and inexpensiv way of cruising the bay

Hi Ginseng, Firstly, thank you for taking the time to leave a valuable review, we love hearing feedback form our guests so we can strive to improve everyone's experience to make it the very best possible! I'm really happy you found the location great, and the rooms were good for you. I understand your frustration with the cruise ships sometimes obstructing the views of the Opera house, but this is something out of our control. Usually, we do get large time frames where the ships aren't docked, and when they are we still have a great view of the Bridge, Harbour, City scape and surrounding areas. It's just a shame there was a ship docked when you were staying. It sounds like you made the most of the activities and location though and hopefully we provided you with a great stay. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Kind regards, Nathan Gasson, Shift Manager, Sydney Harbour YHA

We stayed here as a family of 5 and couldn’t fault our stay. The location is very close to supermarkets, restaurants and the opera house. The rooms were clean and spacious. The continental breakfast buffet is very cheap with kids eating for free and there is the added bonus of a kitchen and cooking facilities to cook yourself. Our kids even enjoying washing up!! The rooftop bar is great - it would be nice it the opening hours were extended though. Overall we had a great stay and would absolutely stay again.

Very helpful front desk staff. I had reserved the wrong YHA and they were so wonderful in fixing this for me. Lots of great facilities and general areas. Lovely kitchen and lounge area.

Room was well set up with bunks, lights, individual Power point and lockers with another PowerPoint inside. Bathroom was also comfortable. My only concern was with the ventilation in the room. There was literally none! The info basically says to open a window but as it was raining out this was not an option. To get any sort of air con you have to arrange specifically with reception. This was a bit tricky though as some people in the room were already asleep so I couldn’t check with them if this was ok to set up and I as trying to be very quiet and considerate of other guests in a shared space.

I don’t feel the heat that much and I come from QLd which is super hot but I found this room extremely hot and sticky and quite smelly with no air flow at all! With covid still a threat and ventilation one of the most important things for controlling the spread in buildings I really don’t think it’s responsible to have shared rooms entirely unventilated. I understand environmentally trying to avoid air con use when possible and I only use my a few days a year at home but please put in some fans! Or have air con that can be controlled from the room when needed.

This was one of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed at. From spacious rooms, very sturdy beds, great bathroom in the room itself and kind staff. The view from the terrace is also phenomenal. From all of the YHA hostels I’ve stayed at this is the best one by far. They have lots of taco and bbq nights (and the tacos were so delicious I’m still thinking about them and for only A$5). I cannot recommend this hostel enough. The location is also great, just 5min from the Circular Quay (but there are lots of steps). Also a tip: if you’re coming with the tram from the airport, maps will tell you to get off at the Circular Quay station - don’t because you will have to carry your luggage up a lot of stairs, go to the next stop with is Wynyard as the walk is the same length just with no stairs.

Dear Jernaja, Thank you for taking the time to leave a superb review, it's great when we hear back from our guests about how their experience was with us. I'm glad you found your room to be spacious and comfortable for you. It's also nice to hear some lovely words about our staff. We're pleased you found the taco night to be great value for money. The food we serve and views from the rooftop is always a highlight with our guests and I'm glad it was no different for you. We are also happy you found the location to be great. Like you said taking the train or bus to Wynard is definitely an easy option if you are carrying luggage with you! We look forward to hopefully seeing you again in the future. Warm regards, Nathan Gasson, Shift Manager, YHA Syndey Harbour.

Location is excellent, the view is fantastic. Prices are affordable especially if you plan to spend most of your time outdoors.
The AC is centralized for the whole building, so don't expect any in your room even if you request for it.
Check the sheets before you lay on the bed, housekeeping doesn't do a good job but the Frontdesk staff on duty can be very helpful.

HI - no I'm afraid the double/twin rooms are really meant for two people, but we can fit a cot in them. 2 adults and 2 children need to use the family room which as the proper number of beds for the number of people.

Hi - sorry to correct the previous respondent, but that is not true! Hostel reception staff are more than happy to help you book tours - whether you are staying at the hostel or not. Just ask! There is also a whole range of tours on our website - look under the Tours and Experiences tab at the top of the home page. You can enquire from there or there is a Chat function where you can talk to someone about it more.

Hi - bookings made direct to YHA (for instance through our website) can be cancelled up to 24 hours before arrival. Exceptions would be special packages etc that have been marked as non refundable. Bookings made on other websites are subject to the cancellation policy stated on our hostel listing on that site - which is pretty easy to check. Hope that helps, but if in doubt call the hostel directly and have a chat with them.
